Could This Demolition Boat Be Our New Home?!?! (MJ Sailing - Ep 276)

  • This week we get out of the tent and onto the water, as we help the guys from Kentmorr to bring in a boat for demolition. It's anchored up the Severn River, across the Chesapeake Bay, so the 4 of us load up onto Tucker's trawler to grab it.
    As we hear more about it from Alex along the way, Matt and I begin to wonder, 'If this boat is in decent enough shape...maybe we can take it!!'. It's not an uncommon thing around this marina, for boats scheduled for demolition, to be snatched up by another person as a project boat. In fact, Tucker's trawler we're on was the same case!
    After attaching a bridle to the sailboat and towing it back over to Kentmorr, Matt and I are able to get onboard and give this old Hunter sailboat a good look around to see if it could be a potential home. Getting inside though, we notice it would need A LOT of work!!
    We hope you enjoy!

    Being from Maryland, landlocked for 35 years in Colorado. I’ve travel Severn River, many times. Glad you guys had good weather to pull this off .growing up there was a lot of Bandon boats over that way especially off the southern river.get that catamaran done let’s get it on the water you don’t need any more projects stay safe.

      Yes, no more big projects for us!! We're really looking forward to the day we splash, but also the next projects which will come after fairing and painting. If we have to devote energy to a boat project, it is definitely going to be the catamaran. 😉

    Yes it is sad that that little sailboat will be cut up into pieces. It doesn't look like it's in a horrible shape at all. And heck yeah there's lots of good stuff that can be recycled off of that vessel! Oh my the very last part of the video where the travel lift is separating the keel from the hull to me is my sad moment.

      One of the reason the guys at Kentmorr agreed to get the boat and bring it back to demo is because they could take off all the parts. So now Tucker has some great new Lithium batteries!

    Must say I think keeping efforts on the catamaran would be what I would do too. You aren’t that far away from being able to start bringing some of your stuff over to the new boat, that will at least give you more space.

      We're hoping that by this December we can move ourselves aboard. She still won't be ready to splash until next summer, but if we can finish off the guest hull enough to live it...it would give us A LOT more space!!

  • @karlfair
    @karlfair Рік тому +1

    May not have been a boat to move aboard. But what a score? The dink was more than worth the trip. A good size lead keel, will pay for the dumpster cost for the hull. Bacon's is a good place to sell the rest. Just keep up with them, they won't notify you of a sale. You have to ask every 90 days.

    • @MJSailing
      @MJSailing  Рік тому

If so one or more of your followers might be willing to purchase it for you to live aboard and use for a year. At which point you could either give it to the person(s) who purchased it, sell it, or if those who buy it don't mind, raffle/prize it off to one of the followers in a contest...

      To be honest, we're probably better off in the Pacemaker we have. As we're learning on the Viking (only on it for a few more weeks) when a living space gets too comfortable, it makes it harder to go in the tent to work. I think we might need the push of a small uncomfortable living space to keep us motivated for the build, haha.
