*nod* Nadesico is a pastiche on the mecha genre. However it's so good that it's become a great mech series in its own right. Originally, the Prince of Darkness movie was meant to be the start of a movie trilogy to tie things up...but it never happened due to the fact the movie was a facade of what I loved about it.
It actually isn't just Spike Spencer who provides the Eva references in the dub; Tiffany Grant was cast as Ryouko specifically because the directors thought it was funny to put her as an angry tsundere in a red mech after she'd just finished recording Asuka.
That moment when Arkada reviews not only an obscure show you've watched and enjoyed but also recommends your favorite anime ever (Irresponsible Captain Tylor)
I did review both Tylor and the OVA series back in the day when I was on Blip. Though to be honest the first Tylor wasen't that great of a video. A third of it was me ragging on the spelling of Tylor's name, how the box has one spelling but the eyecatch has something else.
Glass Reflection Well, more people really should know about the show, if you could reupload that review (or remake it if you're unhappy with it) that would be fantastic :) Also did not expect a reply
Those unforgettable day, for them I live. I Loved this show, it was one of the first 3 series that really got me into Anime. another Recommendation to watch if you liked Nadesico is "Bodacious Space Pirates", by the same director: Tatsuo Sato. available on Crunchyroll
Some stray thoughts as I as going through this: - Yurika actually is tactically intelligent. It's shown maybe twice (?) in the entire series but it seems that when she's given full command and is actually motivated, she is quite competent. - An interesting tale in all of Nadesico is the ongoing commentary that it's alright to love things, but to not take it to the point of obsession. - I always found the best comparison for Nadesico was M*A*S*H...it's able to make you laugh one minute, then cry over crushing realism within the next. - I actually thought the ending was an intentional joke. The fact that the translation specifically used the words "inevitable sequel" made it seem like it was throwing things around for the sake of poking fun at cliffhangers. Not well pulled, mind you, but it seems really tongue-in-cheek. - It's quite disappointing that Stellvia won't get a sequel. It's not exactly great by any stretch of the imagination but I always appreciated it being an extremely positive and uplifting Space Opera. It's nice seeing this series get some love. I've thought abut the series heavily the last couple years and I've felt that the series' main points are still extremely relevant after all this time.
Akito in the last episode of Nadesico: "Yurika, I watched the last episode of Gekigangar 3. Oh, it was a terrible episode. Just a horrible story. But as horrible as it was, I felt shivers going down my spine.... I want to believe in how I was so attached to Gekigangar. Believe in the part of myself that has faith in hot-blooded passion." Carrying the parody homage all the way through to its finale. Edit: I honestly didn't mind it going serious for a bit there at the end with sci-fi twists. Time paradox and time loop theories.
Thank you for this review Ark. I have been a loyal Nadesico fan since the early 2000's and I own the ADV release of the series and the movie, and while I liked the movie in some ways knowing what I do now kind of burns me in my own right. However, your recommendation to Buy is well deserved and I thank you for this review! YOU GET TO BURNING!
You did Nadesico. This surprise was certainly unexpected, this is why glass reflection is good shit. The unexpected sruprise like this one is something you find here and mostly here. 10/10 points well done Arcada You Get to Burning.
I stumbled across this review and it brought me all the day back to the early 2000s. This show has a special place in my heart, having first seen all of it at Otakon, when it was fansubbed AND right when ADV announced it had acquired the rights. Me and my friends fell in love from episode one and felt refreshed after being consumed with Evangelion. Since it's on youtube there's no reason to not give it a go. Plus the opening STILL SLAPS.
nadesico is my favorite anime of all time. i remember when i first watched it being shocked when the girl with glasses made a joke that the mechanic likes other men XD?
I love how this series is open about the fact that Anime can be used both for good and for bad. Near the end of the series, the Gekiganger anime is used as justification for peace by the crew and that one Jovian dude whose name I cannot remember. But, the same anime was also used to justify war by the Jovian leader. I just really like that Meta analysis that this anime does
I got so excited when I saw you did a review for this series, sir! My brother and I used to watch anime together before I moved out of my parents' house 5 years ago, and this series was one of the first either of us watched from start to finish (movie excluded). We loved it! And I have no shame whatsoever in admitting that it's the only anime I've watch all the way through twice! It's such a fun ride, and I am so glad that I found a copy at a con last year! It is so worth the money!
i love your disclaimer. "unless you have a problem with animation from the 90's or older...then god help you". old animie is what i grew up on in a large part. back when blockbuster was still operating as a kid id go and pick up whatever they had. ( yes im kinda getting old haha). excellent review! one of my younger friends tried to watch gundam wing and couldnt because "it doesnt seem like 1080p". boi did i have a laugh at that! wonderful to see you reviewing older anime! keep it up please!
Man, what a guilty pleasure anime this was. Even know I still crack up when Ryoko asks "Do you smell what she is cooking?" Man, I miss 90s dubs so much
I remember before the dub for Gurren Lagann came out I really wanted Brett Weaver to play Kamina because of the similar personalities Gai Daigoji and Kamina have.
Fun fact, this Anime's head writer was the same person who was the head writer for the Pokemon anime (more specifically, the Kanto through end-of-Johto seasons), as well as the screenplay writer for the first 3 Pokemon movies. Takeshi Shudo. What a small world.
Nadesico is the show that got me into anime, and is still hands down one of my favourite shows (it holds a very special place in my heart). Not the first anime I ever saw, but the first one that really hooked me in, and resulted in hours spent trawling the early 2000's internet trying to learn more. And yes, the ADV box set was also the very first set of DVDs I ever bought, and is still tucked safely away in my collection.
Awww... you did not include the Gekiganger 3 OVA. My favorite thing about Nadesico is when the finally met the Jovians they find the Jovians based their entire society on Gekiganer 3.
Martian Successor Nadesico and The Irresponsible Captain Tylor are on my list of anime that I watch annually. They are very entertaining and enjoyable to watch but I will agree that the endings, leaves a lot to be desired. I will have to disagree with the dubbed version, I bought Neon Genesis Evangelion when it was first released, I prayed every episode for Shinji to die. To this day if I hear that voice actor use that voice I immediately switch to the original with subs. Thank you for the review, it is nice when you occasionally review older anime.
I love Nadesico. I discovered this show during one of Toonami' s robot week's, and fell in love. I agree about the Guy/Kamina similarities. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that. Also, yeah the movie was terrible. It was as bad as the ending to Lost; in that it answered questions, but added more at the same time. Anyway, good review.
I really love Nadesico. Is one of my favorite tv series ever...What's bothers me is the movie. For me it was one of the biggest disappointment series finale ever written ( movie ). First because the author didn't give a damn about the people who don't live in Japan and don't have acess to the Sega Saturn games, so in the movie they just goes " I will not explain anything about what happened in the last 3 years so brave yourselfs ". I heard it would be a trilogy but for some reason they forgot about it.... But Nadesico is amazing. Every character is lovely in some way. Yurika is one of my favorite female characters ever. Nadesico's crew is amazing! Thanks for the video. Great work!
If I recall correctly Nadesico:The Prince of darkness was meant to be the first movie in a trilogy. Obviously its reception was why the other two were cancelled
sir, i am extremely shocked by how someone still remembers this show. This show have always been under the raider if not underrated. Finally there's someone like you who share its greatness to the public. i tried sharing it to my friends and peers before but sadly they never give it a shot or appreciated... but no matter what, great review.
Nadesico will always be my ultimate anime favorite. It perfectly blends tons of different genres together, while managing to parody all of them and still having a strong story of its own to tell. All of the main characters have plenty of screen time and character building, and even most background/support characters like Ms. Howmei are fleshed out enough that they don't feel one-dimensional. I highly recommend picking up the new RightStuf DVD set as it contains the movie, or better yet, wait until next year when they release Nadesico on Blu-ray! And I heartily recommend the dub, if not solely for the performance of Jennifer Earhart as Yurika Misumaru. Let's go Gekigengar 3!
I don't know about the "Gurren Lagan" recommendation. I watched up through season 1, and that was about as much as I could stand. Actually, that was *PAST* as much as I could stand of it. And as for making more of "Stellvia"; I don't see how. The story reached it's logical conclusion, adding more would mean just dragging it out. It would be like trying to make a third season of "K-On" (yes, I know they had the "College" and "High School" one-off mangas, but I think KyoAni has moved on). I just regret not paying as much attention to anime in the 90's as I should have. At the time I was mainly watching whatever random shows they were showing in the Anime Room at Lunacon. I think it was because of what was happening in my life that I missed out on all the good anime (and not being into computer games, I missed out on all those too, plus not buying into the Amiga). At least I was watching Babylon5 then, so not a completely wasted decade.
Man, this show was such a cornerstone of my childhood Anime experience. It's good to know why the tone shift was so abrupt in the movie. I have been bitter about that one for years. Thanks for the review!
Thank you for reviewing this show! I bought it back in the day when it came out and this review was nice blast from the past, morning present for me. You are awesome! :)
Arkada, you are going to make me watch a series, than play a game to watch a movie and consequently play another game to watch another series just to get the entire garsp of such a product? Wow, man. You're amazing, cause I love Saturn, I love Dreamcast and I surely liked the first episode of Nadesco. Holy Crap!
Pedro Centurión There is more Nadesico has been a part crossover games. Only 2 are in English SRW J for the GBA and SRW V for the PS4. You should play them after you're done.
I haven't watched this show, nor was aware of it, but due to this review, i'm heavily considering it. I love mecha anime a ton, i'm no super-fan of anime (yet), so i'm not sure about my tastes being good yet, but i'd recommend watching Lagrange- The flower of Rinne. It's one of those shows that is meant to be enjoyed IMO, and I found the experience to be one of the most beautiful, enjoyable shows i've ever watched. Sure, it's not the best i've seen, but it's pretty damn good and I do recommend it.
nadesico is really damn good, though some characters may get on your nerves depending on your taste, and it has a brilliant plot twist I dare not spoil
Hey thanks for the review. I quite enjoyed it. A little feedback though: English is my second language, and Japanese is my third one (learned it with anime TM). English being a foreign language to me, I have to somewhat focus to understand what you're talking about. When you mix a song as a BGM, which happens to be one of my favorite song, I can't help losing the focus ending up not being able to understand what you're talking about. I'm sure this only happens to a very small portion of your audiences, them most likely being native English speakers. But that's what happened to me anyway, and I wanted to tell you about it. Cheers. :)
I'll keep that in mind for future videos. Which song was it? Was it the show's ending song that came in later in the video, or the intro song at the beginning?
Glass Reflection It's "Watashi Rashiku" used around 8:00 mark. Thanks! I don't know how you can improve it, or if you should do so in the first place. But I think just lowering the volume a bit may be enough in this case. Using an instrumental version would be also an option, but it's never as tasteful as a vocal version.
I'm old enough to remember this show when it was making it's major rounds on the North American market. This show was high school for me. Quite excited when I saw your review of it pop up in my suggested videos. Thank you!
Nailed it. Arkada does it again. Favorite character is Izumi Maki, totally underrated; She makes me feel kinda funny, like when we used to climb the rope in gym class. BUT, one must remember that time honored adage even when choosing a waifu; "Never put your #@$! in crazy."
I love this show so much! I watched it on VHS waaaaaaaay back in the 90's (still have my one copy on NTSC - I'm in Australia so it was super rare) and even read the manga back then too. Recently bought the series on DVD and I heard they are releasing it on blu ray next year with G Gundam :)Also the new super robot wars v that's coming out next year in English has the mecha from Nadescio in it.
this was the first anime ive ever seen (I was like, 6) and I was also rewatching this anime for the first time since then, at this very moment. I was about 2/3 done the first episode when i started browsing through your uploads and found this.
RCgamer 77 I'm wondering if it is actually coming. Patience is a tired old man who needs to go see his wife and kids sometimes even though he works long hours to support the family.
"it's like nadesico comes from a time when anime creator believe that you didn't have that sort of thing[fan service] to make character interesting to the audience " yep im gonna watch this one
Funny you bring up Love Hina because the Japanese voice actor for Akito is the same as Kietarou, Ueda Yuji. Bonus fact, Omi Minami the voice for Ruri Ruri is his real wife. I don't know if they are still married to this day. Extra bonus 20th anniversary for this anime is this year.
I don't recall the ending being all whacked up, I remember it being great because they wrapped up the love triangle. This show has charm to spare. Undeniable 90s classic, I've seen it twice and own it. Just recalling the show makes my heart pound. Glad you reviewed it! My heart sank when you said it was messed up. The movie is not exactly good, haha! I still need to get to some of its more overbearing influences though, I'm rather short on space sagas in anime. Its best function is that it's so messed up, I love that it takes nothing seriously. More Nadesico would be cool I guess, but I don't feel like I need it. Cheers!
I bought this on VHS back in... '98 or '99 or so while I was working at Suncoast. It was the first anime I ever bought (And anime was extremely expensive on VHS back then, since it was usually $20-$30 for like 2 episodes per tape.) One of my favorite series. Excellent review, and you filled in a few gaps for me regarding the video games, as I was unaware those even existed. I should pick up a new set on DVD, since my VHS tapes (and my VCR) are long gone. :)
+Glass Reflection Since you like classic, have you tried Sakura Taisen? One of the true classic back in those days with Sabre Marionette which offers alternatives to Gundam Wing. Come on now... make this old man proud and pick up some classics.
The structure of the recap episode of Nadesico is probably one of my favorite Recap episode structures, probably seconded by the "Character is writing a letter/journal entry/report" about the events of the show - particularly as done in Samurai Champloo and Patlabor TV.
I watched Martian Successor Nadesico last year, and the harem of girls pining for Akito is what made the series for me. I even got to do NSFW art for one of the girls (the Megumi Hayashibara expy).
Its funny cause Gekiganger III is an actual thing that came out after this and made by the same people for the reason why its in the series, since Gekiganger III was in a SRW game I would find it funny if they were to get Gekiganger and Nadesico in the same game hahaha, By the way the the Gekiganger III SRW theme is awesome. I only looked this up cause The Price of Darkness movies was in a engrish import game of SRW V on PS4 and it seemed cool and ended okay in that game.
That moment when he finally does a review of a show that you already have, gives it all his praise that it deserves and then says the ADV ones were lucky... Which I have, sweet.
L&C for random mention of Stellvia... Banger of an OP, amazing worldbuilding, adorable characters, HOPEPUNK... But also unsuccessful attempts to cram an hour-long plot into 20 minute episodes (really, this thing would have been much better if it was an adaptation not an anime-first deal.) and CGI that's... So mid 2000s it's painful. especially when they CGI that giant not-a-robot "Look, we learned SHADERS. We can make things shiny! crazy, right?"
This has been one of my top 10 favorites since all the way back in high school (2002). I own the whole series on original VHS. (I don't even own a VCR anymore... lol)
*nod* Nadesico is a pastiche on the mecha genre. However it's so good that it's become a great mech series in its own right. Originally, the Prince of Darkness movie was meant to be the start of a movie trilogy to tie things up...but it never happened due to the fact the movie was a facade of what I loved about it.
lol, fancy meeting you here
Not the strangest of coincidences. You've replied to none other than Abridged Jun Aoi.
Vox Nihili really as in Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3 Kamile sounds like Jun.
Yeah the movie was a bummer, liked the show though.
Things to know about Martian Successor Nadesico
- It's Gai Daigoji
- Gekiganger is the shit
- And Ruri is best girl
Nuh-uh! Izumi best girl! Fite meh!
Inez Fressange for best babe
It actually isn't just Spike Spencer who provides the Eva references in the dub; Tiffany Grant was cast as Ryouko specifically because the directors thought it was funny to put her as an angry tsundere in a red mech after she'd just finished recording Asuka.
Could you say that Nadesico is the Cruel Angel's *Antithesis*?
I'm gonna leave now
*slow clap*
AwesomeSoxz watch the intro to MSN and Eva at the same time.
I'll give you one internet. Feeling generous today.
You win the internet.

so is Nadesico like MASH in space?
Yes. Yes it is.
Glass Reflection Well, more people really should know about the show, if you could reupload that review (or remake it if you're unhappy with it) that would be fantastic :)
Also did not expect a reply
Glad to see Nadesico finally get some love.
you mentioning Gai Daigoji being a Kamina prototype made my day.
Those unforgettable day, for them I live.

RogerSmith2004 Have you seen Nadesico by any chance?
It was created by the same person who made ConRevo.
CornishCreamtea07 Sho Aikawa was involved, though I believe he was only a script writer for Nadesico.
TheKazeTrigger Not all of it
script for 15 eps(so more than half the show) and Basic Planer(whatever that means)

To further dash any hopes of a proper sequel/continuation; Xebec, the studio behind Nadesico, went tits-up in 2019.

*Arkada uploads new review*
Me: Aaaaahhhhh damn.
NOW BACK TO THE FUTURE IS ON T.V. GAH.
+xSonicSeedrian I feel your pain
Glass Reflection Arkada I encourage you to Review Aldnoah Zero! Its certainly worth your time.
Man, what a guilty pleasure anime this was. Even know I still crack up when Ryoko asks "Do you smell what she is cooking?"
Man, I miss 90s dubs so much
It was nice that pre-10s there was a time when not every dub was from Funimation.
CornishCreamtea07 I couldn't agree more. I think I watched more Pioneer and ADV dubs back in the 90s than Funimation
I remember before the dub for Gurren Lagann came out I really wanted Brett Weaver to play Kamina because of the similar personalities Gai Daigoji and Kamina have.

There is just something about that "over the top" comedy style from 90's anime... I miss it.
Nadesico is the show that got me into anime, and is still hands down one of my favourite shows (it holds a very special place in my heart). Hearing those trumpets again gave me a nostalgasm. Still one of my all-time anime theme songs.
This is one of my favorite anime's. Nice to hear someone else's thoughts on it since it's not really well known.
ABOUT BLOODY TIME YOU REVIEWED THIS!

Woah! Arkada's pulling out the classics. Shame this never got a 2nd season.
All these Nadesico haters... Baka baka
Thank you for this.
@@hickey1292 I am also hater!

*sigh*... if only this anime got a remake, like the countless remakes that evangelion has...
Man, this show was such a cornerstone of my childhood Anime experience. It's good to know why the tone shift was so abrupt in the movie. I have been bitter about that one for years. Thanks for the review!
OH MY GOD, THIS ANIME WAS PART OF MY CHILDHOOD. Just as I started marathoning it again, Arkada does a review!
I do have the original ADV release and it is glorious. I concur Martian Successor Nadesico, is one of the most under rate gems in Anime history..
I've got it on my list, gonna listen to your words and hopefully have a fun time.
It's a great show, but it feels like it drags in the middle.
I 100% agree with you when it comes to Spike Spemcer Arkada, as soon as I saw that I freakin lost it!
I know of this anime through SRWJ, so it's nice to see how the actual anime fairs.
I learned about this anime from Super Robot Wars W, which provides a convincing ending to the Nadesico series. I treat that one as cannon.
Hey thanks for the review. I quite enjoyed it.
A little feedback though:
English is my second language, and Japanese is my third one (learned it with anime TM).
Was it the show's ending song that came in later in the video, or the intro song at the beginning?
watch the last episode on subtitles aketo slaps yurica when there in the cockpit but in english he just calls her an idiot
Got the ADV release when it first came out and I watch it once a year, one of my favorite anime
I'm old enough to remember this show when it was making it's major rounds on the North American market. This show was high school for me. Quite excited when I saw your review of it pop up in my suggested videos. Thank you!
Nailed it. Arkada does it again.
Favorite character is Izumi Maki, totally underrated;
She makes me feel kinda funny, like when we used to climb the rope in gym class.
BUT, one must remember that time honored adage even when choosing a waifu;
"Never put your #@$! in crazy."
This was one of my first anime I started on. I am glad you did a review of it. Now I have to go back and rewatch it.
Good to see Nadesico is still receiving some love :)
Im happy to see u reviewing more classic animes. If u havent seen Boogiepop phantom then prepare to have ur mind BLOWN!
this was the first anime ive ever seen (I was like, 6) and I was also rewatching this anime for the first time since then, at this very moment.
I was about 2/3 done the first episode when i started browsing through your uploads and found this.
Glad Ark reviewed this slightly obscure anime; i myself watched this because of Super Robot Wars J! :D
So, where is the Mob Psycho review?
Mr. Crypto Thought I was the only one.
Mr. Crypto I also wanted to ask...
Same
So, where is patient?
RCgamer 77 I'm wondering if it is actually coming. Patience is a tired old man who needs to go see his wife and kids sometimes even though he works long hours to support the family.
"it's like nadesico comes from a time when anime creator believe that you didn't have that sort of thing[fan service] to make character interesting to the audience " yep im gonna watch this one
there is 2 "fan servicey" type episodes but thats it.
You never see ANYONE! Talk about this show! That is refreshing, thank you!
Great work once again, Arkada!
Can you review Irresponsible Captain Tylor?
Another great review. Keep Up The Good Work~!
didn't watch Nadesico but the way he described it somehow reminds me of Full Metal Panic :P
I love that opening trumpet in the OP. It announces that you are about to have a ripsnorting good time!
I'm kinda amazed you hadn't reviewed this already, considering how many times you've talked about it in the past.
Cheers!
I watched nadesico after moving to a new city and feeling like a stranger in a strange land. It really helped through a tough time :)
Yea that main character definitely amuses me. I appreciate that kind of comedy.
i'm surprised you didn't choose Full Metal Panic as an alternate anime recommendation
Well, there is something in that..
TheRezro ?
Also you can transpose Nadesico and Evangelion's intro sequences' respective audio tracks and they both work really disturbingly well.
"PRAISE THE SUN!"
i had to stop the video for that one. hahahaha
+Glass Reflection Since you like classic, have you tried Sakura Taisen? One of the true classic back in those days with Sabre Marionette which offers alternatives to Gundam Wing. Come on now... make this old man proud and pick up some classics.
If this comment gets 50 likes, Arkada has to review Mob Psycho 100 in the nude.
no thanks
Make this happen.
He has no obligations to do that
+KidSnivy69 He does now.
You can't decide things for him. Legally, he will not/does not need to do that action.
I think Akito-Yurika ship carried this show for me.
The structure of the recap episode of Nadesico is probably one of my favorite Recap episode structures, probably seconded by the "Character is writing a letter/journal entry/report" about the events of the show - particularly as done in Samurai Champloo and Patlabor TV.
the cast commentary on the adv dvd are gold! especially the pageant episode. plus, captain enema.
I watched Martian Successor Nadesico last year, and the harem of girls pining for Akito is what made the series for me. I even got to do NSFW art for one of the girls (the Megumi Hayashibara expy).
Also an underrated gem. The ultimate parody.
I LOVE NADESICO!
people saying that Nadesico is bad please Nadesico has charm try watching the anime Pilot Candidate: Candidate for Goddess that is a terrible anime.
That moment when he finally does a review of a show that you already have, gives it all his praise that it deserves and then says the ADV ones were lucky... Which I have, sweet.
aww you stopped doing the pictures on the bottom for your suggestions. I liked those. gave me a visual representation of what I'm looking for.
Loved the different style for the review this go around please do it again!
On a side note, I watched the Sega Saturn ad compilations. And Sega Sanshiro is GOAT!
it's goat
arkada so whens the review week of awesome I've been waiting for so long for that juicy week of greatness
Oh god I remember this. I haven't seen it in years.
Tristan, I can't move on with my life 'til I see your Monster review.
I just finished it. It's my favorite new anime in a long time. Well, new to me anyway.
I am shocked. It took you this long to review this. My bro requested this review for who knows how long ago.
This has been one of my top 10 favorites since all the way back in high school (2002). I own the whole series on original VHS. (I don't even own a VCR anymore... lol)
I would like to disagree. In 1991 Sunrise canceled Gundam F91 and made just a movie instead of a full tv show.
Just like you Tristan, Spike got me sold on this one.
