This song was my life too, when I was 19 years old. I'm Italian and my girlfriend at the time was Black. Now she's been my wife for 20 years and we have two great kids. Life's short and this world is brutal and our love has gotten us through it all. Our lives are lovely.

When Louie Louie first came out, it was banned from the radio stations. It was impossible to find the record in the stores. The kids put so much pressure on the radio stations that they finally started playing it on the air.

Actually it was originally performed by the group Hot Chocolate and they had two verses in it that were controversial it didn’t do very good for them. About six months later the Stories asked if they cover it. They eliminated the two verses that were controversial and it did very good in the US.

I was 13 when this came out and I loved this song. Especially the line, "ain't no difference if your black or your white". This feeling was part of personal growth way back when. We also grew up watching the Jeffersons, Good Times, What's Happening, Stanford and Son - the actors became part of our families, their stories gave us something think about, but also to realize that we are all the same - we worry about money, and family, mom is going to be mad at you for skipping school, what's for dinner, etc.
Thank you India, this was what I needed today.

Love this 'one hit wonder' song - as a 20 year old budding guitarist in 1974, I had an audition with a prominent, successful area top 40 band (who had a great lead vocalist), they told me to learn 4 or 5 songs from their list, and this is one that i spent some time learning the solo and parts - -when I got to the audition, they said they didn't do this song anymore. Anyway, I was kinda nervous, had a couple years experience with a couple other bands, but didn't end up getting the gig. Ironically, about a year later, they called me and offered me the position, but I had started my own group in the meantime and didn't want to jump ship.

I was 14 when this song came out. My parents were not good parents but at least they were not racists or homophobes. Growing up in Hollywood CA provided a more tolerant and liberal setting that allowed people of different cultures and sexual orientations to develop friendships and love relationships with a lot less intolerance than middle America (yeah, we have racists and bigots here too). I do not discriminate who I date (except drunks and smokers LOL) being racist makes no sense. I could be passing over a woman who could be the greatest love of my life and my soulmate. The song generated discussions among kids in school and provoked thought. I remember one of my teachers talked about the lyrics in class. Sad in this day and age, there are cultures that still give their members grief if the dare to love someone that is not of their culture. This needs to end.

Great reaction! I’ve always been the same way about color . I used to bawl my eyes out when some of my family members would call people of color bad names and wonder WHY ! Even as a toddler , I didn’t understand why people would hate someone based on their skin color . I’m like you . Of people are kind to me , I’m kind to them . I’ve actually been treated with more kindness and respect from all the Latino men I work with than many of my so called white “friends “ . And many of them don’t even speak English and I barely speak Spanish . But they’re all so sweet and respectful to me . Anyway, this is one of my all time favorite songs . Love everything about it . Glad you enjoyed it ❤

Hi India, I loved your reaction and comments on this song. You explained the meaning of the song beautifully. And you’re so right about mixed dating/marriage was very controversial in the 1970’s (and earlier). Your sentiments about just loving whoever you want to are so true. Racism is so awful. I really liked your presentation and your personality. I always loved the sound of this song and the singer. The melody was catchy, and the singer had a soulful, gravelly voice very similar to the great Rod Stewart.

I been listening to this song most of my life and it's the first time I've ever seen the singer. What a surprise. I thought he was black and they were a soul band.

I know you mean. Gone through that with other bands. (Although I think Ian Lloyd looks like Jason Isaacs)

one of my favourite versions of this song off the original by hot chocolate. most of the cover versions tend to omit the story of louie also being brought home to the girl's parents and being rejected by them too. check out versions by The Quireboys (less funk, more Chicago blues/rock), Peter Beckett (bluesy, but like early 90s vocal-centric), and The Oppressed (punk-rock/brit-punk, Clash-esque)
