Updates/Corrections to video: 1) For the frame geometry, I accidentally swapped the bike names and images. The measurements are correct as stated in the video, but the order of the bikes in my geometry table should be, from left to right: Trek Marlin, Specialized Rockhopper, and then Giant Talon. Sorry about that error! 2) All of the Specialized Rockhopper models have increased in price by $100, so the Rockhopper Sport now costs $700 3) The Marlin 6 actually uses 100mm of travel in its size small as well, and only uses 80mm of travel for the xs size.
These are the best videos I’ve seen yet that do comparisons of the most popular models of the big brand bikes. Please continue with them .....great work.!
I can only agree with what KK has written, I only discovered your videos by chance. I am looking to buy an entry level hardtail and then fit a Bafang 1000kw Mid-Drive ,hopefully the bottom bracket on the bike I choose will be a ‘straight-through ‘ with no complications. Your videos are extremely good, simple and informative to a novice that wants to get into MB but only wants to bike British roads and off -road fire-tracks.Covid has given me more time to study this but there are so many videos it gets confusing to try and make a final decision, but I think yours will help me more than any others. Great work and thanks
The Talon 2 is the clear winner for me. I think I’m going grab it when my local bike shop gets its next shipment. Your videos have been so helpful for trying to buy a bike. Thanks!
Because of the pandemic it's not easy to get your hands on any bike nowadays. However, I was able to get a base Rockhopper back in August and I'm loving it. It does really well in rough terrain and hardcore trails.
Rockhopper has always been an iconic exception of "budget", lower level bikes. Nobody can be ashamed of a rockhopper. Capable, balanced and Upgradable.
I had Rockhopper and Talon, both are amazing bikes, even you are beginner or intermediate ciclist, very oriented to be upgraded whit better components.
Thanks for the video. I just got my son a Talon 2. He’s 6 foot 2 so when I called all my local shops that was the only XL entry level bike available. Looks like I got lucky !
I literally asked this exact comparison question just today. And lo and behold, there's a video! Nice! Although I added the Cannondale Trail in my question. I am leaning toward the Talon however.
Great video! I've been bikepacking for 8 years and evolved a Boardman 27.5 hardtail. I like the straight handlebar, front suspension and wider tyres, hence gravel bike is a non starter. The Boardman is now worn out and I've upgraded to the Talon. With tubolito inners, weight is less than 13kg. I've added seat post suspension for further comfort. Never got on with 29 for bikepacking and gearing with the single chain ring is actually ideal.
i ride a Trek Marlin 4 2017, and i thought it was pretty nice until I felt a full carbon FSR bike (Cannondale Trigger 3 2019). my friend also has the Trek Marlin 6, so i hope to buy one of those soon.
Just bought my very first mtb the Talon 2 a couple days ago. I was looking for the Marlin 6 but at this point of the year most of the local bike shops here are out of stock. But luck have served me well and I found an XS Talon 2 (which is perfect for my size) for roughly below 500$ (converted to USD) and it had the UK groupset components. Looking at the price range, for me I struck a great deal! Thank you for these types of videos! It's a pain to look through their websites for hours for their comparisons. Also, let me know which parts should I uprgade first.
I really appreciate the time you took covering this information and focusing on key differences. Further, I appreciate you explaining how these differences translate to the road/trail.
Just got my marlin 7 yesterday I’m so pumped on it it’s a beautiful bike I have a marlin 6 too but I’m inexperienced in mountain biking so I’m learning about it and how these bikes work
I bought a Talon 2 just recently for my son. He loves riding it. Compared to his ‘98 dual sus hand me down I gave him. It’s in the concrete color. I like it a lot. Different animal compared to my Stance.
@@1Adam1584 it’s not super light with all the entry-level components it has. Definitely nowhere near carbon. But I would say it is lighter than a steel frame. I just weighed it here at home. It’s 32 lbs tires are at 32 psi with no additional equipment installed. I bought it in Oct. the store finally received it in the middle of week 47. Hope that helps. Enjoy which ever bike finds you!!
I got the marlin 6 here in Phoenix, AZ. I wanted the marlin 7 but the availability right now is not there. Even the marlin 6 was hard to find. I called atleast 10 stores and finally landis cyclery had it lol.
Of course! And yeah I've heard a lot of people these days are just ordering the bike they can get the fastest rather than the one they want the most, which is unfortunate.
@@TalalipopMTB oh ya. I understand. But I'm a cheap middle aged married man and I have a limited amount of money to work with. So I don't like the idea of buying something and then not liking it.

Fantastic review. I'm looking at a second bike as this lockdown situation is preventing the fixing of my Talon 2 and I'd not considered the Trek until now👍
If you are intending to have bike for more than 5 years and going to ride bike, the best bike shop in a Trek bike shop and what they sell is the best bike, sometimes other brands too. Usually they offer free tune ups
🔥🔥Fire video 🔥🔥 helped me out a lot, I’ve been comparing bikes trying to see which was best for daily use maybe some exercise, as well as a decent entry level bike for some easy/medium trail riding
Giant makes frames for trek and specialized so there's not much of a difference in frames but the giant talon beats beats all at certain price groups..
