Seems like I've been doing this for the 2-3 years that I have been actually self-learning Chinese! I can totally vow to this method. My parents are Chinese but I grew up outside of China. My mother tongue is Taishanese which is totally different from Mandarin. After moving to the U.S. and seeing that so many people here know mandarin and their mother tongue (any Chinese dialect) I FELT SO EMBARRASSED I DIDN'T. My cousin introduced me to Hong Kong dramas (Cantonese is similar to Taishanese both come from the same region, Guangdong) but I stirred away into Chinese dramas. I started watching with English subs but then I fell in love with many Chinese actors and well decided to watch their dramas regardless of English subs. Since a year ago, I started to not care if there are subs or not, I will watch it. Now, I can fluently speak to my mom in three different dialects which is AWESOME!

I started watching Chinese dramas which increased my interest in Chinese, then watching UA-cam videos, building glossaries and I just finished my first semester of Chinese at a community college and did very well in the class. I’m enrolled in the second half. This year I had planned to travel either to Taiwan or China then the pandemic decided otherwise. There is nothing better than traveling to the country where they speak the language. It’s baptism by fire. When I was learning French, traveling to France and having conversations with French friends increased my understanding of the culture, the institutions, how people really speak, not text book French. I hope next year I’ll be able to travel again. Getting my Covid vaccine in a week or two. I work in healthcare. Hope everyone in the world will also have access to one and we can get somewhat back to normal. Stay safe and keep learning and growing. Never too late to learn. I’m in my 60’s.

  • @wisecanadianwoman

It was Chinese dramas that got me interested in learning the language in the first place. At 68, I have been learning through both online courses and through watching the programs. At first I thought I would never learn this language but as the time has gone on, I am surprised at how much I know. I am no where near proficiency in the language and am always looking for ways to up my learning. I just find the language so fascinating and have made the learning a part of my daily routine. I just found your UA-cam site today and look forward to viewing your videos. I am a far cry from speaking the language comfortably with someone who's mother tongue is Mandarin, however, my comprehension grows stronger each day which is encouraging. Thanks for creating your channel.❤️

I love using C-dramas to help me learn, even if they are a bit above my level... two good things about them, one is that they almost always have Mandarin subtitles to go with them (thank you China, very helpful!) and the second is that the desire to understand what's going on is a very good motivator to learn! Thank you so much for your advices! I'm learning Mandarin Chinese as my third language and sometimes it gets challenging, is always pleasant to receive help!
I study everyday because I have time and actually enjoy it.
My routine starts in the morning with some writing, pronunciation tests, lessons, podcast and audio-news with subtitles. During the day I try to use as much vocabulary as possible (for example: when I go to the supermarket I tend to name the things I'm buying)
Lately I've been seeing some dramas and it is surprising to notice how they use some words as expressions.
    Love from México!

Real Life Language Input! I love it. I've just started using Netflix and I use the Netflix for Languages Extension - the subtitles are a great way to add to your vocabulary. :-) Thank you for continuing to inspire me! Good for your Mum watching Peppa Pig. When I first started learning Mandarin, I used to watch nursery rhymes!

Like, the thing, I have been studying Chinese for 5 months and of course I first did some basic stuff like grammar structures etc, but I NEVER actually sat down and memorized vocabulary by heart. Immediately 1 week later I started watching stuff in Chinese, let it be Tv Shows, interviews, whatever. That's the thing why now my listening skills are very good as well as my pronunciation. That's the 1st thing I recommend, be around your target language as often as possible. Every night I spend 2 hours watching Tv shows in Chinese and I have a book where I write down stuff I come across while watching. Now my booklet is full, so I am having a new one. Also, I ask my "language parent" the next day about things I didn't understand the night before, let it be grammar or something else.
Now however, because I am better at Chinese than 5 months ago, I started creating vocabulary lists, organized "to do with people - verbs", example 羡慕 or 接。, as well as adjectives or also phrases, such as 有好处,泰然处之,有自信。。and so on. All those are what I have come across in those shows/interviews. What I mean is that, for ME personally, it could not have been any better, because how can one possibly improve faster than when having real life input, analysing it, speaking it, asking about it, just generally devoting oneself completely to the language?
Also, instead of a teacher I find it better to have a *language parent* , that way you interact way more and you are having more fun (Just my personal opinion).

I been doing this recently I’ve cut all other languages I’m not fluent in shows to focus on learned Chinese shows (such as meteor garden, take my brother away, wait my youth, the prince who turns into a frog, triad princess and so many others) thanks for all the useful information!!

Wow! You're amazing! My must-watch C-drama recommendation is Story of Yanxi Palace《延禧攻略》 Aired in 2018 but is still AMAZING no matter what year you're watching in. It's 70 episodes long but it's worth the watch! :) (It also comes with the Chinese subtitles in the UA-cam version)

around 2017 youtube language content really took off. i don't know why.
it wasn't a desert in 2014 but the Chinese language teaching content seems to have at least tripled since then, not an exaggeration.
Russian also increased but no where near as much.
      Idk about other languages.
