I kinda get why, like comedy panel shows aired on the US don't do as well. Because most of the fun of them is watching characters we know and are beloved in our country, so a lot of them with be much less known in America so won't have the same attachment to it as we do. I think they hoped that with more US contestants, that the US audience would then get into it more
So much potential, 1) New host 2) filter contestants who HAVE actually seen TaskMaster before 3) Please get comedians who aren't rude and swearing the whole time (Lisa killed the series)
So many things went wrong in this version. Whoever made the executive decisions clearly didn't get why the show works in the UK. 1. The most important thing about the show is that Greg is a tyrant (but one with a heart). The way Alex completely trusts Greg, and Greg trusts Alex makes their on-screen dynamic work. While we consciously know that Alex Horne is an accomplished comedian in his own right, and doesn't live locked up in Greg's basement, by what we see in the show, he might as well be. The boss-and-personal-servant dynamic is crucial. For one, it stops the comedians from hating Alex, as the TASKMASTER is the person who sets all the tasks up, and Alex is just his underpaid minion. People don't hate underlings, they hate the big bad. Or whoever is perceived as that big bad. The way that Greg is always in full control, and Alex let's himself be controlled is what works. Greg decides how far to let Alex off his leash, and Alex stays within those bounds. Yet, their relation is an amicable one. It's important for the Taskmaster to protect Alex from the contestants. The way that Greg routinely punishes behavior that takes it too far is important, so that Rhod Gilbert realizes that undressing Alex every other task is not ok. Adapting this to the US is not the easiest feat, as the dynamic between his lordship Greg Davies and Alex Horne is a very british one, with lots of nuance and cheekyness. What could be interesting, is to either have a strong female Taskmaster (think 80s business woman who wants to have it all, and has her personal secretary carry her bags everywhere), or to have a choleric rapper and his sophisticated manager type deal going on. A Danny DeVito type character could also be nice. All in all, the Taskmaster needs a big personality, he needs to have a radiating on-screen presence. He needs to be able to dominate a room. For all I care, we could have Triumph the insult comic dog be the taskmaster and it would be better than Reggie Watts. 2. The pacing. What makes the show work in the UK is also that the contestants all kinda know each other. The UK comedy scene is a group that often meets, and gets along. That results in banter. I think that in the US you could get a similar result by having team tasks happen more often, so that the comedians in the US version also already have a connection once the studioshow starts. That would result in better banter, legitimizing a longer runtime of 1 hour. 3. The contestants. While you can take pretty much any British comedian and assume they're probably in it for the sport, Americans are usually in it to win it. Taskmaster is funny because british comedians tend to not take themselves too seriously, and to assure a good US show, you need to cast comedians that also understand that sentiment. People who do it for the lulz. People, who may be crude but not there to be insulting, provoking, or pushing an agenda. Insult comics tend to stop being funny once there's no one there to insult, which makes them a bad fit for Taskmaster.
I personally think you are missing something fundamental underlying and its comedy style in the UK vs the US. I believe Stephen Fry once explained this very well. The crux of the difference is that in UK comedy we tend to like and relate to characters who are losers, we want to watch ugly flawed people fumbling through their lives, we like the underdogs. Look at other failed comedy adaptions, the Inbetweeners a story of kids who are kinda losers or Red Dwarf, the story of the two biggest losers on the ship 3 million years later. In general there is a humble self deprecating quality of British humour where we want to laugh at ourselves at with other people laughing at themselves. The US comedy is all about being the best and loudest. Comedy shows very often have beautiful cast members being 'quirky', US culture is far more about being very selfish and beating the other people around you. So for a show like this it utterly fails. This is because on Taskmaster we don't want to see a bunch of people skillfully and competently complete the task, we want to see them fumble, fall over and make a fool of themselves. We want to laugh at the biggest loser and cheer when they finally do well in a task. I'm pretty sure if there ever was an American comedian on the UK one who consistently did well and kept going for applause Greg would punish them for being smug. You can even see it in the aesthetics. The UK one is a crappy weird little house next to a motorway, its often gloomy and raining when they go places. When they went to a football stadium it was a small local one which was grey and depressing, they use some little gazebos in a park, they use a school hall. The US one, at least the house, looks like a beautiful house with a nice pool, they awkwardly insert the taskmaster shed which then looks totally out of place. If they put the caravan in there then its even more awkward. Its really just trying to get a square peg through a round hole. The fundamentals of comedy are so different between the cultures that the idea of the show cannot translate. Its how I think something like a 'comedy roast' which the Americans seem to like for some reason probably wouldn't work if the British tried it.

I'd like to state that I'm neither a Brit nor an American to establish my objective judgment. US ver. sadly lost me right from them reading the task. I suppose it's a culture thing, UK people are much better with banter and US with slapstick jokes.

Lisa Lamponelli ruined this show, and Reggie doesnt have the right persona for this show. The Taskmaster doesnt necessarily have to be exactly like Greg, but the harsh boss/employee relationship should have remained.
I think we should redo Taskmaster and get Joel McHale or Conan O’Brien to be Taskmaster. I’d also take it out of LA a ways to a less populated area. Reggie doesn’t look like he’s a terrible host, he just doesn’t have the persona down for the Taskmaster. I think he would do better in Alex’s role because he’s too nice.
Agreed. It's forced into 20 minutes, Reggie is a fun guy but Greg Davies is perfect at the role, and I personally can't stand Lisa Lampanelli. I didn't have much of an opinion on her before the show, but she is a grown woman and calls everyone "BITCHES" and shit like that and thinks she's funny. Also, she gets mad when people play competitively, where in the British one it's encouraged to cut corners and stuff like that. I would like to see an American one where Greg is the host. The British one is so much fun, they should just replicate it exactly with American comedians as contestants. Obviously scheduling and stuff like that may be tough. Sorry for the mini rant.
Agreed. Reggie is known for being lovable, but the Taskmaster is funny when he is harsh and rips people for being stupid, Greg is perfect at it. He's harsh enough while never crossing the line and becoming mean and bitter. Also, not only is he not "little Alex Horne", but the competitors treat him like he's the bad guy, where in the British version he is more of a lovable loser. It's still an ok program, but the British one is great, like actually great, like it weirdly might be my favorite show on TV, and I'm American. It's such a silly concept, but executed so hilariously.

Watch Taskmaster UK and see how Greg also says he wrote the tasks. He's the Taskmaster, it's the premise of the show, Alex plays the role of Greg's assistant. This means that this is exactly the same as the UK version. Finally, chill out Ryan, it's a TV show, be thankful they've got it over there and can appreciate Alex Horne's marvelous creation!

I thought I'd give it a chance since I'm caught up on UK taskmaster... oh no. oh no no no. The vibe is so wrong. I adore that they've kept Alex (I know hes created the show ect but you never know) but Immediately the vibe was off. I dont understand why changing out Greg was necessary. Why can't we just have people of different places all be under the judgement of greg and alex???
It's the little things that make this worse than the UK version: this task in Britain had barriers and obstacles in the way that made it much more interesting. Disappointing.

But I'm going to guess this format would work in any Country. Though I do miss the downtroddenness of the dingy little house of the British version, instead of this luxurious place with a pool etc. Makes it seem too much like they actually care for their contestants. I wish I could of done the step challenge. I would have walked on my hands. Of course it would have had to been 17 years ago,reason being that I broke my back in an automobile accident 10 days before 911 so I can no longer walk on my hands. I do miss that a lot as well as other things I don't get to enjoy. Just wish I could have been able to do a challenge like that and be clever enough to walk on my hands. I'm surprised nobody else tried it.

Of course it would have had to been 17 years ago,reason being that I broke my back in an automobile accident 10 days before 911 so I can no longer walk on my hands. I do miss that a lot as well as other things I don't get to enjoy. Just wish I could have been able to do a challenge like that and be clever enough to walk on my hands. I'm surprised nobody else tried it.
