I grew up on Chandler, Hammett, Caine, Thompson, the lot. And I grew up on Humphrey Bogart. So I was not expecting much when I purchased the BBC Chandler Radio Dramas. Must have been sick in bed and bored to death. Hard to know how to put it other than I was utterly stunned. Mind you, Bogart was the perfect Marlowe. But this guy was no less perfect. Totally nailed it. I must have listened to it a couple of dozen times before I happened across this video and thought, “Wait… wtf… Captain Flint?!” This a truly remarkable man and I am beyond grateful for… I guess for giving me fresh, direct access to a beloved character I would not have thought possible.

Came here to say the same thing. That BBC drama is still one of my favourite pieces of media ever. This guy would have played Marlowe perfectly in a tv show or a movie.

Now here's a great diverse competent actor! loved his work as Edward Rochester's Jane Eyre and here what a great surprise and what a difference in change! Impossible not to want to see more of this actor's performance.

Loved that version of Jane Eyre, Ruth Wilson was fantastic as Jane, courageous but also vulnerable, as in the book.
Prompted me, a 50 yr old man, to read the novel. BEST novel I’ve ever read, Charlotte Bronte is a better observer of character than any of the male writers I like.

Toby does a perfect American noirish accent as Marlowe. Not New Yawk, because Chandler wrote about LA. But just hard-boiled enough for the genre. And the rest of the BBC radio cast is just as good. These current Brit actors are amazing !

I just began listening on audible. They’re really good stories. I keep imagining Toby’s facial expressions from his tv shows and movies when he reads certain lines. They just become funnier. Really good listen.

Super ! C'est toujours un plaisir de voir Toby. Dommage qu'on ne le connaisse pas en France : pas de films qui aient été doublés, il me semble, seul le petit rôle d'Alexandre dans Napoléon.
