Palio di Siena: L'Atmosfera

Tradition, pride, faith, ritual, and color: Through photographs and audio, I wanted to convey the intense atmosphere of Il Palio in Siena, Italy for the Palio d'Assunta over four days in August 2011.
Il Palio is a horse race held every July and August in which ten of the 17 contrade (neighborhoods) of Siena compete in Il Campo, the city's central piazza; the remaining seven are entered into the next race. There is one winner, no stopwatch, and no cash prize. For the most part, the contrade race to win extremely valuable bragging rights over the rest of the city. Il Palio is centuries old, rivalries are ancient and fierce, and the traditions are still faithfully performed primarily for the Sienese themselves; it is not merely a show for tourists.
The sounds of Il Palio are as rich as the visuals: you constantly hear church bells, snare drums, horses' hooves, and fight songs echo off the stones in the old medieval streets of Siena. For that reason I recorded actual sounds of the Palio for the soundtrack.

Tourist agencies make you visit Venice, Pisa, Florence and Rome and in Siena buses only pee. Hence the amazement of tourists when they spend the end of June and mid August by Siena and discover that there is an incredible medieval festival: July 2 and a week before and August 16 and a week before the Palio ... Who love Italy must once in his life attend a week of Palio! Le agenzie turistiche ti fanno visitare Venezia, Pisa, Firenze e Roma e solo a Siena gli autobus fanno pipì. Da qui lo stupore dei turisti quando passano la fine di giugno e metà agosto da Siena e scoprono che c'è un incredibile festival medievale: il 2 luglio e una settimana prima e il 16 agosto e una settimana prima del Palio ... Chi amare l'Italia deve una volta nella sua vita partecipare ad una settimana del Palio! Les agences de tourisme vous font visiter Venise , Pise , Florence et Rome et à Sienne les autobus ne font qu'une pause pipi . D'où la stupéfaction des touristes quand ils passent fin juin et mi août par Sienne et découvre qu'il y a une fête médiévale incroyable : Le 2 juillet et une semaine avant et le 16 août et une semaine avant le Palio ... Qui aime l'Italie doit une fois dans sa vie assister à une semaine de Palio !
