Wow, Im keeping that last sentence, preeeetty cool. "there are only 2 types of people in the world, those who think thats there are only 2 types of people, and those who dont"
+elEd0 It´s also a contradiction in itself, because if the person that says it believes it, he's in the first group. If he doesn't believe it, he would be in the second group but is knowingly telling a lie.
+Jacob H (MrGAEM) He's not saying everyone should be, he's saying you'd be better off and be more understanding about the world we live in. Fail comment was a fail.
I enjoy these 2veritasium walk-and-talk videos, but when is Veritasium going to have a new upload? It's been over two months. I know you're committed to quality and probably working hard on multiple projects, but come ooooooooon! Too long without a Veritasium video makes me all sad and stuff.
I feel like this very accurately describes why I have such a distaste for the political system in the US. People seem to get stuck in a single political party and allow the party to define all of their opinions rather then define their political party with their opinions.
+Miister Cloud i feel like that's with everywhere, and also the 'do i represent my political ideology or the people?' and most of the time it's their ideology that defines them. they're scared to be called something they're not, just because of what they think of them
I would suggest the reason that this is the case is because we only have a two party duopoly in the US. Third parties find it very difficult to compete nationally, are blocked by ballot access laws, have perpetual a lack of funding, struggle with the electoral college on the presidential level, aren't well known, can't get into debates, have to deal with a FPTP system that punishes competition, etc. As much as I'd like to allow my opinions to define my political party, that'd probably put me in the US Green Party, which is unable to compete without at least federal funding, which it can't get unless it gets 5% in the general election (on the presidential level), which it likely will be unable to get given the current set of barriers to entry into politics. Change--brought about from within the broken system and from the outside--is required. Popular participation in local politics is necessary as well.
Just one question, as I suffer from anxiety disorder, I couldn't help but envy whenever you make these videos/vlogs but instead of being indoors, you choose to actually walk-and-talk with hundreds of people just looking at you as you point that camera to your face and simply vlog. Heck I can barely take a selfie out in the public, before quitting in well under 5 sec before people start staring. I hope you could reply and possibly help me get over my own irrational fears and shyness. (Anxiety and Depression both are fucking up my life since almost 2 years now)
+James Clark i don't really think you being shy of taking a selfie is abnormal. also derek has been doing this sort of stuff for years so of course he's use to it
+James Clark There’s no easy and quick way out. Get professional help. If you can take selfies, do that more often, and try to extend the time little by little. Meditate. I have not solved my similar problems yet, but maybe these suggestions can get you started in some way. There’s a lot of resources online as well. But basically, it comes down to get professional help - someone to guide and support you while you are on your journey.
+Kissaki Thank you, no I have sought to go in therapy just never went through with it, as I didn't want people to think less of me. I just miss being able to be this free as he is, the level of confidence is entirely lost upon me and believe me, I was not even close to like this before. I just wish there was another way to not be crushed under my own paranoia.
+Anna Banana Oh no it's not just with selfies that I was talking about, it's his level of confidence which I really look forward to achieve someday. He's absolutely not suppressive of himself, I hope he'd make another video about it someday.
James Clark i kind of have a suggestion but not really a profound and enlightening one, have you tried going out and doing things by yourself? like going to the movies/restaurants by yourself? i noticed when i started spending a lot of time alone my confidence was very boosted.
+Valentin Möller New Orleans potholes...you need the ground clearance to avoid trashing your suspension every morning. Small cars don't last long here.
actually the strategy of cracking down on the American consumer is not effective to combat climate change. those suv's are tiny compared to the giant industrial plants that make American drivers negligible.
I've always admired Derek's filming style. Aside from him, I've never seen anyone so focused on filming. It's really amazing that he can focus on his monologue, show the entirety of his surroundings, ignore yet remain relatively aware of his surroundings, AND look into the camera.
Wow. The last line and the footage you shot immediately afterwards was brilliant. Showing all those different people doing all their different things really demonstrated the point of that quote. I am so grateful you make these videos and that I have found them.
Hey man, just wanted to say your content is very fulfilling! Not just this video but ones like learned helplessness are really thought provoking. I watch alot of UA-cam, and I like to think always learn something whilst watching the infinite catalogue of content. But with your videos they like, stick with me, changing how I approach different tasks in everyday life. I think what I'm trying to say is thank you. Thank you for all your hard work!take it easy😃
25k friend request! Man you are an inspiration! When I watch these videos on your second channel I truly feel as if we are friends and I feel that you're talking to me personally. You're great Derek and you deserve all the major success you're yielding!
Where were you shooting? Certainly is in the U.S.; there were also more people looking at the camera than in other locations where you would walk down the street with a camera. I think this kind of videos are very inspirational: thank you!
Sometimes it is important to hold on to some fundamental views, cause letting go of them can be corrosive. That said, you must adapt in order to survive.
Really happy to see NOLA in the background. I had the privilege of going there in November last year for a RHYTACC conference and I fell in love with that place. Absolutely amazing!
Wow.. This was your most beautiful video. And I particularly don't mind your shaky walking videos. Cause I get to see beautiful places and architecture through your lens. And one more thing that music at the end that got perfectly timed..isn't it?? 😉
People were complaining about your camera videos? I love these! They look natural and personally I don't think you should change anything about them! They're so engaging! Keep making videos like these! All of them seemed fine to me!
Great insight! I definitely need to dig a little further into facebook and the likes. Anyway: wonderful spot for shooting your video. New Orleans no doubt! Love that fisheye wide angle lens - one can see what's going on around you - the funny "barrel" distortion is a minor drawback (I actually like the effect) for having everything in focus and a great view! Thanks again for sharing your thoughts!
Thank you! Your videos have progressed over time. You use to ask questions that moved from the perceptual to the intellectual, i.e., you were looking for physical answers, and asking for help and reinforcement from others to concertize ideas that reside ultimately in the conceptual realm of your mind . These kinds of videos have evolved into, from my vantage point, a kind of cognitive defragmentation. I'm enjoying your process of clarifying your mental sauce. This video, and the survivor fallacy, have been engaging! Thank's for vloging your process, it's helping me along the way too!
I ended up paying more attention to the surrounding area. 2veritasium is slowly turning into "Sightseeing with Derek" channel. Not that it's a bad thing, I still got your point tho.
Took me awhile to figure out the location, it seemed vaguely familiar at first and by about 2/3 of the way through, I thought it's got to be New Orleans, an appropriate setting for such a presentation. Nice job. We are all faced with navigating between certainty and doubt. Certainty has its benefits--kinda like a habit--doubt on the other hand leaves us open to the potential for change. The notion of "change" itself however maybe an illusion..
I really like these types of videos of you walking and talking about life in general. If you enjoy making them I am sure we will enjoy you posting them more regularly :)
Wow! What a great video to start my day off with! thank you so much for all the time that you give and all of the insight that you deliver. hope you know that it is appreciated and it is needed.
I've never had the opportunity to visit New Orleans. It has the same heft of age that Europe has. Nailed the outro, BTW. It was funny watching you as you saw your opportunity.
I love the walk n talk videos. feels like a real conversation and I'm just waiting for you to finish so I can speak lol. more natural feeling. great job bud.
This video was in a word moving. I've talked about this before and with a couple of other people; the notion of the 'fear of success', where i inadvertantly centre(d) [
Isn't the point of the fox approach that when needed you can act like the hedgehog and thus effectively by choosing the fox approach you get the benefit of both?
Great discussion..gives lots to think about. Really fabulous video, too..and a straight shot, one take? Amazing. I've never seen one of your walk-and-talk videos, but you certainly have a knack for them if this one is an example.
Thomas Huxley once said, "Try to know something about everything and everything about something." I think that's a very good and healthy way to approach life.
You are bang on Target Veritasium when you say that getting to the bottom of things is the most ultimate pleasure in the world and always having a curious eye for things and a sense of wonder gives unparalleled happiness that nothing else can match.
New Orleans is a beautiful place with amazing locals...waaaay underrated... Acadian: je suis acadian Southerner: did you say you's a cajun? Acadian: non, je suis Acadian! Southerner: right, a cajun Acadian: sigh...oui je suis a cajun
A fan from Nepal here. I usually go to your page to look at the content. makes it easier to know if I've missed out.. also, if you come to Nepal, please post it on Facebook.. we have a lot of Derek and Veritasium fans here
Thank you for the more stable video! My first thought when the video started: "What camera is he using? It's both stable and good at picking up his voice." I'll keep thinking about my decisions, and hopefully remember to be more fox in the world.
I like how you interact with your surroundings, adds life to the video. By the way can you make a video explaining how future events can affect present time(Retrocausality)?
that bar is Lafitte's where the guy asked "what are we on?" IT's the oldest bar in america and Jean Lafitte was a slaver badass that saved the US navy from the spanish during the spanish american war.
I'm a fox for sure, it's not an easy path because once you start seeing how many points of view there are on things and how unclear a lot of information is, how each side has merits, pretending you have certainty about things is VERY comfortable, knowing you are not is very UNCOMFORTABLE. It's no wonder dogma is so prevalent everywhere!
Well, to me this is more of a moral issue. Do we want to support companies and organizations that use dubious means to make profit? Sometimes, we don't have a choice. Pretty much all banks, for example, have adopted a series of highly dubious methods. But, it would be extremely hard to live without a bank account in this day and age. I mean, google is not a saint either but still here I am on youtube on a daily basis. I think we should hedgehogs whenever we can be. The fox approach of being a cunning and sneaky individual who's main motive is to get as many personal benefits as possible, is in the end what makes this world into such an awful place. If you look at history, and all the great achievments we have accomplished none of them has been the result of diplomacy and cunning behavior. No, it's always about that things need to change and we won't stop until we've accomplished our goals. If all people were foxes we would still have slavery and women would not be able to vote. These are zero sum games. Either we have slaves or we do not have slaves. Either women can vote or they can't. There is not room for subtlety here. Diplomacy is NEVER about change. Diplomacy is about maintenance. Yes, we need maintenance as well... but, without a hedgehog in the background nothing will actually change. In other words, the hedgehog is what drives us towards change and progress. The fox is the one making the transition smooth (and in some cases possible). The fox alone though, can't accomplish anything. What I'm trying to say, is that we probably need both. But, the hedgehog is the true source of progress.
Users on Facebook have bred like rabbits, and now the foxes have moved in to take advantage of one of the best ways to target nearly a quarter of the human population. Soon the rabbits will find another burrow. Meanwhile, the hedgehogs are defensive and already curled into a ball. BTW: Congrats on Snatoms !!
I loved the quote in the end and looked it up; you’ve misquoted and added a level of specificity. The quote is “there are two types”, not “there are only two types”. Which brings up the possibility of implying that everyone is multiple types of people and to some extent then, there is only one type. This is the type I feel like I see all the time-more and more I feel like most of us as the same, just to varying degrees.
Why is there only Fox or Hedgehog? Why can´t there be a grey in between? My biggest problem with most models is this "1 *OR* 2"-idea. I find myself thinking this or that at times. But when I take a step back, I can find an "AND" or any misxture of possibilitys I didn´t think of earlier. Would be nice to get some more opinions on this topic (by anyone).
It's just like a line where one end is the fox and the other is the hedgehog, and we are all somewhere in between. Some are closer to the fox while others are closer to the hedgehog. It's simple as that.
some ideas are hedgehog ideas, and some are fox ideas. hedgehog: evolution (everything makes sense in light of evolution) fox: global warming (there are myriad ways of explaining and solving this one) most ideas are some mix, and some of our 'hedgehogginess' i think comes from what Daniel Kahneman called in his book "Thinking, fast and slow" as our 'system 1' method of thinking - where we have pre-conceived notions of how to solve problems, so we see our problems only in the light of those presumptions.
Walking through public with a cam pointed at your own face while monologing. Balls of steel mate :)
+here4frags gets old real quick, though :(
+Moritz K It's kind of the point of his second channel though, just random videos that aren't the main projects.
+Moritz K not for me, no. i quite like those videos.
+here4frags Mate he attracted that woman in the beginning, fuck it I am going to do this too!
+here4frags That too in one single shot with perfect background music at the end. Hatsoff :)
I swear I hear 'fucks' every time you say 'fox'
i was just going to comment that 😂
what does the fuck say?ah ahahah ahhhhhhhh ohhhh
+barmiro You beat me lol
+barmiro Same here. I thought he said fucks approach, and then would proceed to count the number of fucks he has to give about Facebook.
+barmiro Yeah he messed up that pronunciation. When he said I thought he said Fucks approach which made me think the shit was about to get real.
+elEd0 samme I wrote it down as well :3
+Javier Ortega I don't think there is any contradiction, i find it to be true regardless of what group you fall into.
+Javier Ortega you're thinking way to hard lmao
It's not a contradiction. It's a paradox. Self referential statements make the best paradoxes! :D
The idea that 'everyone should be more fox' is just you being a hedgehog.
Hedgeception
+Jacob H (MrGAEM) Mind = Blown
+Jonathan Limp That moment when you don't want to reject a new idea because the video you just watched said that exact thing ;)
+Jacob H (MrGAEM) He was alluding to that idea by mentioning the guy with the statistical analysis website.
+Jacob H (MrGAEM) He's not saying everyone should be, he's saying you'd be better off and be more understanding about the world we live in. Fail comment was a fail.
Freebooting? Brady will be pleased.
+velikiradojica I get an eargasm everytime someone say that word
+velikiradojica Maybe, once, brady will pronounce his name right
+velikiradojica Who is this Brady? I don't get it, would someone explain it to me, please?
+Huntracony Please no.
+Micha Sng brady is the one who came up with freebooting in it's current contex, he did so in an hello internet podcast
Sonic and tails ?
Yush ! i was right
Hahahah i thought you said "fucks approach" at 1:12
+Big Papi same here!
Nice Sega reference with Sonic the Hedgehog, and his companion Tails the fox.

Miister Cloud it's not as prominent or explicit as in the us but it definitely happens
I would suggest the reason that this is the case is because we only have a two party duopoly in the US. +AlphaOmega I think I'm mostly Golden Retriever, but then on occasion I think there might be some Pit Bull mixed in somehow.
To lazy to give a fuck? xD
Where did you film this? Looks nice!
Looks like New Orleans
+PussyGalore Specifically, the French Quarter.
+PussyGalore Same question
+PussyGalore Starts on Bourbon Street, ends on Chartres Street, New Orleans.
+PussyGalore It's the taint of the United States - New Orleans.
Derek, we love these videos on your 2nd channel, keep them coming!!

Yup
SUV next to SUV next to SUV next to SUV...Whoa. Man, that much pollution...
+Valentin Möller Americans call THAT a small car.
+Valentin Möller New Orleans potholes...you need the ground clearance to avoid trashing your suspension every morning. Small cars don't last long here.
+Valentin Möller Hey Valentin! :D Wundert mich aber nicht, dich hier zu sehen! ^^
+Valentin Möller if you filmed this in Palo Alto or Oslo it'd be just rows of Teslas
actually the strategy of cracking down on the American consumer is not effective to combat climate change. those suv's are tiny compared to the giant industrial plants that make American drivers negligible.
Ending with that music was just perfect, it reminded me of Whiplash.
I tried that hedgehog tactic while in prison. Never got raped. The costume made of knifes was funny though...
Dark, but funny.
Its been 7 years since you upload these walk and talk videos. Apart from science and engineering stuffs we want these too. @Veritasium
Brady: "Grey you know what, Dirk from Veristablium used the word freebooting again!"
I've always admired Derek's filming style. Aside from him, I've never seen anyone so focused on filming. It's really amazing that he can focus on his monologue, show the entirety of his surroundings, ignore yet remain relatively aware of his surroundings, AND look into the camera.
So that's what the fox says. Mystery solved.
Dave M lol
That ending though… that was awesome!
If Kant or Kierkegaard had had UA-cam channels, I imagine they would have done a lot of walk and talk videos.
Wow. The last line and the footage you shot immediately afterwards was brilliant. Showing all those different people doing all their different things really demonstrated the point of that quote. I am so grateful you make these videos and that I have found them.
Screw the rules. I'm going to be a badger.

where the hell are you? looks like an old western town but updated.
Where were you shooting?
Certainly is in the U.S.; there were also more people looking at the camera than in other locations where you would walk down the street with a camera.
I think this kind of videos are very inspirational: thank you!
+xja85mac The French Quarter in New Orleans.
+xja85mac I think it is better to use the term "Filming", particularly when it is followed with "US", you don't want to startle people, now do you?
+TopeA8 Yes, I guess you're right! 😉
Hi, I always love these videos where you get to see the landscape you're walking in, you do it really well.
But sonic got the success, tails didn't get squat.
I am a hedgehog and I don't give a fox.
A Hedgehog Fox.
A smaller cuter fox with throns
I love how this video not only tells you interesting things but also shows around some city life :)
Them New Orleans really like the camera.
Interesting thoughts to ponder, what does The Fox say?
Are you in New Orleans? Looks like you are in New Orleans. We should meet.
Sometimes it is important to hold on to some fundamental views, cause letting go of them can be corrosive. That said, you must adapt in order to survive.
Where were you in this video? It's really nice.

As allways, a really good video that makes me think and reflect. Your walking talk videos are awesome!!!
That mic drop ending the convo into the music outro; just perfect. Let all those thoughts sink in...

You really looked worked up! Stay healthy Derek!
and that jazz at the end, enticing!
Thanks Derek, I know these are rhetorical, but you explained alot with your fox analogy for me. I'm alot happier now... thanks
I've never had the opportunity to visit New Orleans. It has the same heft of age that Europe has.
Nailed the outro, BTW. It was funny watching you as you saw your opportunity.
I love the walking down the street approach. Especially the random interactions! Really spices things up;)
I love the walk n talk videos. feels like a real conversation and I'm just waiting for you to finish so I can speak lol. more natural feeling. great job bud.

I want to know whereis the street. I love that free artistic atmosphere filling in the area.
+Albert Joe The French Quarter in New Orleans. Pretty much the definition of free artistic atmosphere.
Oh yeah! Thanks! I should remember that name.
Definitely worth the trip.
Good thoughts, Derek. By the way, the stabilization worked like a charm. Smooth movement.
Great discussion..gives lots to think about. Really fabulous video, too..and a straight shot, one take? Amazing. I've never seen one of your walk-and-talk videos, but you certainly have a knack for them if this one is an example.
Great content. And I also appreciate a tour of a city that I've not yet visited.
I love these videos where you walk around, thanks, never had a problem with shakiness but the camera seems pretty good :)
Fun Fact Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop Bar is the oldest building in the French Quarter.
Thomas Huxley once said, "Try to know something about everything and everything about something." I think that's a very good and healthy way to approach life.

I Waited so long for a video. Thank you.
I love watching Derek, he's so cool , calm , and collective.
I heard it from Gould. He put it more eloquently. Something like:
The fox has many tricks, the hedgehog only one, but oh what a trick.
How do you learn how do these 1 take monologues. I am so bad at it, I have to do monologues where I talk but only show like 5 secs in each location :)
Thank you for helping me integrate different view points in a thoughtful way.
New Orleans is a beautiful place with amazing locals...waaaay underrated...

You should run these videos through Hyperlapse at 1x speed! That'll stabilize them!
Great video Derek, I really enjoy what you do here and in your main channel. I hope you're doing well. (:
I'm a fox for sure, it's not an easy path because once you start seeing how many points of view there are on things and how unclear a lot of information is, how each side has merits, pretending you have certainty about things is VERY comfortable, knowing you are not is very UNCOMFORTABLE. It's no wonder dogma is so prevalent everywhere!
“The fox knows many things , but the hedgehog knows one big thing .”
Archilochus; 7th century BC
The fox has the toolbox with a wide variety of tools.
The hedgehog a toolbox with just a few essentials.

What if the real answers are ignored because someone doesn't like it? People still ignore truth when it doesn't fit their belief system.
I loved the quote in the end and looked it up; you’ve misquoted and added a level of specificity. The quote is “there are two types”, not “there are only two types”. Which brings up the possibility of implying that everyone is multiple types of people and to some extent then, there is only one type. This is the type I feel like I see all the time-more and more I feel like most of us as the same, just to varying degrees.
why do people ask where this is, there are fleur de lis and purple green and gold banners all over the place

It's simple as that.
some ideas are hedgehog ideas, and some are fox ideas.
hedgehog: evolution (everything makes sense in light of evolution)
fox: global warming (there are myriad ways of explaining and solving this one)
most ideas are some mix, and some of our 'hedgehogginess' i think comes from what Daniel Kahneman called in his book "Thinking, fast and slow" as our 'system 1' method of thinking - where we have pre-conceived notions of how to solve problems, so we see our problems only in the light of those presumptions.
