  • Ajahn Brahm: This talk revolves around the second and third factors of the Noble Eightfold Path, namely the Intentions of Renunciation, Goodwill and Harmlessness - as well as the practising of Right Speech. Always pragmatic and practical, the Dhamma taught by the Buddha 2500 years ago, correlates perfectly with contemporary concepts of psychology: deluded and and ego-intoxicated, humans project their own fears and weaknesses onto others, rather than face these within themselves. This creates endless conflict and suffering. Loving kindness, gentleness, humility and frugality are the Buddha's antidote...

Insightful reminders to flatten my ego. Sometimes, the message just hit me when I felt that I am "getting there" [acting a bit proud and arrogant] and having a superior feeling. Thanks.

I find myself always attracted to the 'cleverness' of Buddhism, that is, it practical and not dependent on dogmatic thought.
Thanks a great post ( funny too!)

I have friends who say I’ve made it because they see me on the outside living a life of “ease.” They think I’ve amassed this huge bank account. Little do they know that I’ve been on a journey to Freedom in the last 20 years. Peeling away the layers and layers of desires that has enslaved me for most of my life. I’ve discovered that 99 percent of what I’ve acquired in my life time {personal possessions etc.} are NOT essential to my joy and happiness; so, I chucked them out the door to the city landfill or gave them to friends.

Great teachings. I'm put off by a lot if intro to Buddhism videos, the ones with Richard Gere and Kiano Reeves...too much doctrine and nonsense., and fariy tales about a guy sitting under a tree...too much like Christianity. But Ajahn Brahm always talks a lot of sense. Thanks so much.

When I was in highschool I used to make plans about how to destroy the world, I don't know why but I was being very serous about it, this is one of the reasons why I went to computer science school, my big plan was to create superios artificial inteligence and replace human beings completly. I now realize that I had those thoughts because I diden't think I was good enough for this world. It's a good thing I've discovered buddhism, otherwise I might have succeded in my evil plans.

people don't realize that advertisers and car companies spend thousands of dollars to brainwash you and make you give. them. your. money.
-That's why you want to 'impress your neighbors'
-That's why you feel like retirement at 50 with a huge house and fancy car means 'you've made it'
you're making someone ELSE rich when you buy those clothes, that car, and those movies.
do yourself a favor and put THE MONEY IN YOUR OWN BANK ACCOUNT.
life would be so much easier if we all just used our brains!!!

"Holy" comes from germanic islandic "helga ser" or german "heilig", what means "proven to be a completed person on his/her own". Even more interesting in this context. So it has nothing to do with "hole", more with "whole" :)

I thought this was great, you see i was trying to be a man so I don't get teased, and i was obsessed with being a different kind of Mans kid, the the type that liked footy and also liked to get hopelessly drunk, but I later found that i was a total dickhead and i needed to be reformed, I was mean to everyone who loved me, and when they tried to help me, i pushed them right away, and i thought friends were teasing me, but the truth was i went over there and not vice versa

@jackgoldman1 Well its not necessarily religions that cause war, its the people. The Dalai Lama said himself that all religions have the same philosophies and are all different paths to enlightenment. He even stated "I am a Bud-Christ". I don't mean to be naggy or offensive to your views but this sort of comment may offend others and cause other people hatered and suffering. Please if you have a negative opinion agaianst other religions, keep it to yourself. No offense intended :)

you see i was determined to be a cool boy, because i went to the mall, trying to knock all the teasers inside, so I can have my fun, but really they ended up having more fun than me, and this fucken was annoying,, and it made me annoying and it made me be an alcoholic, and not a pleasant alocholic, i was trying to avoid being shy, but i don't want to be a cool fighting man, I want to be an adult who goes out and becomes a man, and i do it through creativity, and that makes me move on

accepting life and other beings for what they are seems like a wonderful ideal, but I find it very hard to accept people who are hateful. That is, people who are groundlessly sexist, racist, homophobic, and the like. I know it's difficult to change these people's minds, and I never expect to, but I find it almost impossible to accept them because "that's just their nature" And it's not even people, necessarily, but our culture that I cannot accept. Any ideas on how to deal with this?

    • @nieceypiecey100

Just think to yourself: These people have learnt rubbish. And it isn't their fault because the people who taught them learnt rubbish themselves. They are suffering. And the only way I can alleviate their suffering is to be here with them and try to understand them. Without understanding you cannot hope to accept them. Hope this helps. Reply if it doesn't make sense :)

And, what may I ask has it done for you. You sit around proclaiming to know happiness, but being an ascetic you offer nothing to humanity in showing us your happiness except as words.
    Is this your Dharmic penitence?
You offer us nothing. Humans are visual creatures, and unless we see that happiness the words alone come off as hollow and insincere.
