DS2 is a very artistic take on modern trap music and still doesn’t sound dated at all after almost 8 years. From what I see it’s considered his magnum opus. I’m not a huge Future fan or anything but I enjoyed Monster too
Nothing about ds2 is ‘artistic’. It’s a tape full of really good trap songs. That’s it. A better example of an ‘artistic’ trap album would be Rodeo. Now I wouldn’t consider travis to be a trap artist, nor is rodeo a trap album. But the sound is definitely trap, but taken to a higher level when it comes to song progression and structuring
@@yaad2545 So you don’t think there is anything at all artistic about the sound of DS2 is compared to his other work? Idk, I hear a huge difference in quality and intent on it. And Rodeo is most definitely a trap album, personally my favorite “trap” album of all time. The way he fused other genres, styles of hip hop and psychedelia into the trap sound is what makes it so unique and groundbreaking
Regarding Security -- if you follow the Watching the Throne guys' analysis at all, their big thesis about kanye is that all of his late-era albums are sequenced like movies, where the individual songs are scenes within the movie, and the ideas and emotions he is expressing within those songs are the characters. Which is why, for example, you have a song like Yikes that dramatizes his descent into mania, before regrouping and finding himself toward the end of the album. Basically all of his albums since MBDTF have been his exploration of these darker moments leading up to some type of journey where he finds some sort of resolution by the end My guess is that Security plays into that. It may or may not be a true expression of his feelings right now about having to visit his kids. Rather, once the rest of the album is released it might become more clear that he's arrived at a more well adjusted place about his divorce, and 'Security' is just a dramatization of an episode leading up to him arriving there. Of course, it seems that your point is that Kanye should not ever express any negative emotions about his divorce in the same sentence as his kids for any reason. That's fair, but I'm not sure if it's an artistic criticism. More of a commentary on the negative repercussions of honest art.
Well said. I came her to ‘defend’ security as well. I think it’s important in the context of the album. The album being; a piece of narrative deciphered through its dynamic positions. Happy is a wonderful track. However, it’s only a slice of the spectrum, a sliver of the story. Security and Flowers give flavor and contrast to Donda 2, both as a subjective art project and as an autobiographic. Maybe it is incorrect to release, but at what cost does (arguably) the greatest artist of our generation sacrifice the integrity and impact of their work?
Yea , the "bad" side of Kanye is a pay off in the narrative. Sometimes you need to see the dark twisted side for the beautiful or fantasy part to feel more rewarding. And also in art, I don't want any artist to hold back on how they actually feel in the moment. I don't judge art on whether or not I feel what the artist feels is right or wrong for their personal life. The point is to express yourself.
Kanye as an artist has almost never depicted himself doing what’s the right thing. That’s why people listen to his music, because he’s relentlessly human and his flaws make his music more relatable
Wow, im 18: 35 in and im absolutely amazed with your breakdown of the álbum, SO refreshing to hear someone talk about different cocepts and ideas other than the usual “this sounds unfinished, kanye needs to finish his verses” , love the way you appreciate the art, hope Kanye or someone from his camp get to see your review!
Donda 2 comes off to me almost like a soundtrack to a depressing science fiction satire. A lot of the songs have a really futuristic sound like Get Lost, Too Easy, Flowers, and some of them also sound like they were lifted straight from a movie, like Security (which actually was), Sci Fi, Lord Lift Me up, and maybe Pablo and Happy. I think City of Gods may just been thrown on the album since it was a single but overall I think there's a fairly consistent sound and theme that people are overlooking. It's probably going to continue to receive updates and I could see it being released in a more complete state on streaming services eventually and by that point it'll be a lot more clear.
when you said kanye’s “it” is that he changes your taste my jaw dropped to the floor it’s literally true, so many new artists i love i knew about by searching for sub-genres ye tries out and usually perfect them
Prof Skye changing locations, interviewing people, inserting clips, having edits, doing visual effects and actually being negative? Damn, Kanye West really out here making people switch their style up right there with him.
A part that made me start tearing up from True Love is when Kanye changes the lyrics slightly and says Tell Gekyume Dady's not gone. Gekyume is Xxxtentacion's son and the fact that ye is not only using X's art mindlessly but is tributing him and connecting his part of the song back to X is beautifull for me. Btw Gekyume is a term X coined which also means higher plane of thought or being. I also love how there is clips of X talking about Ye and humming Selfish and his songs were planned to be featured on Yhandi before it was scrapped, it shows that whilst Ye has repurposed it, he is not taking advantage of X's material the same way his label has been doing in a very dirty way ever since his passing. (If you didn't know X's situation has been even worse than pop smoke's where the label has released demos and clearly bad quality or unfinished songs or even ideas or verses of X just to make some extra money and added random features which made no sense. THERE IS WHOLE ALBUMS OF THIS. X was a rising talent and whilst the music he was doing was not my favourite you could truly see a lot of potential in him to become a legendary, and i mean legendary, artist and kanye did too!)
DS2 is the future album most people like. It’s definately a good album to start with, however some of it hasn’t aged that well. I’d argue that his best album is The WIZRD, which he released in 2019.
Professor, the save me ep will fundamentally change your perception on Future. It's an EP a friend of mine who worked on it passed away. Please pour yourself your finest drink be as alone as possible and digest it. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on it
Been watching more and more since seeing your Kendrick and carti concert review. Love your content so much, going to be a long time fan. But you gotta add security back 🤣
Amazing review, I love your channel so much especially your insights on Kanye, and your own personal experiences with father issues, lose of mothers and divorce, i just turned 23, I have a kid and recently married and I feel your experience help a lot to deal with my own trauma and experiences. You’re the kind of person one would wish they’re dad would’ve been, thanks for all the vids
If you want a similar experience of hearing a progression of Kanye’s “demos” turning into an album (or sections of multiple, in this case), Yandhi is a pretty good listen. It’s very messy, similar to Donda 2 and even early versions of life of Pablo, but it feels more complete than Donda 2 currently is. It also eventually developed into most of Jesus is King and some of Donda (hurricane). It’s interesting listening to these “demo” or early versions of Kanye’s albums and seeing his progression towards a finished product. He has a slew of unfinished or unreleased albums, but Yandhi was the most hyped of all of his unreleased albums probably.
The 'bleach' line in TLOP is interesting as it follows Ultra Light beam which is such a powerful spiritual song. While Father stretch my hands is about our reality of vice and suffering.
Only 25 minutes in and you are making some BEAUTIFUL observations, as an artist and a huge fan of Kanye, you are soooo correct in what you said about changing between passive listening and the writing pov. During the listening parties for Donda 1 I was in a personal race to finish the album before Kanye, I was taking the unfinished versions of each song and producing, mixing and mastering them to sound finished which allowed me to have a completely separate version of Donda 1 compared to his, changing my entire view on the passive music going experience.
very insightful insight inso what seems like, a skeleton, a bare minimum of an album. a work in progress where i very clearly saw potential in each song, and i'm glad i understand it now
Sir, I think YOU'VE done "it" again! I've only been watching your content for a short period of time and already you've expanded my ways of perceiving a few albums I was very indifferent about, including Donda 2. I admire your open-minded takes, the way you include your family, and your appreciation for art/writing. I would love to someday chat with you and pick your brain. You seem like you're a man of a thousand stories, who's well-grounded into who he is and has become. Keep inspiring us! I love your content man!!
I think Too Easy is inspired by 070 Shake, a prior collaborator of Ye's. Mike Dean executive produced her new album that'll be dropping soon as well. Im addicted to this sound right now
The future features on this album are kind of weak for now imo but his best albums are 1. DS2 2. Monster 3. 56 nights DS2 is the best but it is just full of bangers whilst monster is more conceptual an lyrical and has his best song by far in Codeine Crazy, 56 nights is his most hype and one of his most experimental and is worth checking out specifically for the songs No Compadre and specially March Madness
I had a similar snow day experience without Donda II, have to say your reviews never cease to impress me. I loved the way you contextualized the album with S/Z, thanks for helping me to understand music (and art) better with every upload.
The "writerly" concept is really interesting. Just last night I thought the same thing about the repetitiveness of the album lending itself really well for the stem player. Messing with the stem player with these beats is a lot easier for me than random songs I've added or even older Ye songs. I'm glad someone else noticed too. It's possible that it wasn't intentional and it's just a byproduct of being unfinished. It's also possible that the producers and Ye did it on purpose specifically for this reason, but will change for the final release just to make it more palatable to a general audience. I think it's a super good sign that we have two versions of True Love right now though. Great video again Professor Skye.
You should definitely try Future’s SAVE ME . Very short, easy to get into, extremely artistic(especially the visuals)from there I would go Into HIGH OFF LIFE before eventually going into his older works. I feel like his newer material provides better context for his history as an artist.
My favorite example of a “writable” novel would have to be shadow of the torturer and the following books in the book of the new sun series. It’s so cryptic and hard to digest, simultaneously sci-fi, lotr style fantasy, post apocalyptic, and philosophical all at the same time. You can barley understand what the strange nouns used mean, but many are references to ancient history. Prehistoric animals Rome an earth millions of years in the future, then in an APPENDIX you find that all animals left on earth are alien creatures totally unlike these species. It boggles the mind and forces you to dream impossible landscapes, characters, and situations. Nobody has the same story in their head while reading.
around 1:00:00 you pointed this out, that ive been sayiong since the day of. The mumbling and potential of this album is crazy, and as a musician myself, I cant help but wamt to write the lurics FOR him and finishing the songs myself. I think ye partly wanted us to give him ideas. Donda 1 got some of its major changes between listening prty frok suggestions on the kanye subreddit dedicated to remaking ye songs
For xxxtentaction I can not recomend '17' enough, its more simular to what was shown on Donda. There is also a lot of SoundCloud stuff that's awesome but also more chaotic.
what i think kanye is doing with the stem is he’s developing his own soft wear (music) for his own hardware (stem player) it’s about owning and it’s about helping artists get himself paid and the artists
I listened to Xxxtentacion since he started on SoundCloud. I recommend you delve into his work. I can honestly, honestly say that people didn’t just like him because he died. Kanye tweeted after X’s death that X was a major inspiration for him. Projects to listen to: 17 and Revenge
if this version of the album resonated with you, i think you'd like the updated version even better. a few of the songs like pablo, too easy, and we did it kid have leaked in their finished forms and are incredible, and others just received a cleaner mix thanks to Mike Dean. Also, fantastic songs that were omitted like 530, Maintenance and Mr. Miyagi have leaked in their final forms as well. I could send you a copy if you want, since it's not on the stem player.
I don't disagree with people saying DS2 but I'm going to recommend you listen to Monster by Future. I was a Future fan before Monster, but that album really hooked me from start to finish and it's still my favorite. I get lost in its dark and rich soundscape. It's definitely one of his darkest albums and he kind of turns up the autotune and wails about drowning his sorrows in women and codeine. The closer, "Codeine Crazy," is hands down my favorite Future song.
Scifi is my favorite song on the album and I didn't know that Kim Kardashian's speech was cut off. But I think that makes the song more beautiful. The beat has this futuristic dystopian feel to it, but it's as if it's being played at a funeral. When I listen to the beginning, I can picture Kanye sitting alone in a dark, all white room, with no other furniture and the only light source being the tv, as he's rewinding and listening to that section of the Kim's speech, over and over again. We can't see if he's crying or not. Some things need to be kept private. That's the feel I get from the song and in particular Kim's speech. But I have to agree this one feels unfinished and I'm most offended by that. This song has the potential to be the Street Lights or the Ghost Town of Donda 2, but instead we got a merely great song, instead of a transcendental one.
Prof. You gotta listen to DS2! Cultural critic/poet Hanif Abdurraqib said it’s a break up album about all the ways we try to take our minds away from heartbreak, and I think it’s a great description. Monster and 56 Nights as also great by DS2 is mine and many others’ personal favorite. He went on an insane run of recording various high quality mixtapes in like a 16 month span. If you like DS2 you’ll like all those. Great video!
The original song list Ye released a picture of was 22 tracks and the ones on the Stem player now are missing Mr Miyagi from the listening party. Excited to see what gets added and changed!
If you're looking to listen to some xxxtentaction songs similar to the one on Donda 2 you should listen "17" it has a lot of raw emotions on it even Kendrick Lamar retweeted the album saying that people should listen it and see what they feel form the music. His most popular album is the titled "?" which is a more all round album and also the most streamed rap album on spotify. My personal favourite album though is "Revenge" one because this is his debut album and he himself said this album was him displaying his versatility to his contemporaries, but also because this was the time where he really started gaining popularity. At the start most considered his music poorly mixed but I then stayed and listened to his music because it tapped into my emotions very strongly and I'd never had music do that before so I stayed along for the ride. Albums 17 - similar vibe to xxxtentaction's sound on Donda 2 ? - His most popular and streamed album Revenge - His debut
I definitely think Security is a problematic song. Whether that is on purpose and serves a role in the greater context of the album is ultimately up to the listener. I believe in the spirit of being completely authentic in his expression, it would just seem a bit fractured to not include his angry episodes and emotions caused by the divorce as well as the depression that goes along with it. He has never really been one to alter his genuine articulation because it could have negative consequences, furthermore, it wouldn’t be 100% Kanye to leave out the nasty side of divorce, whether it will present a bad message, or drive his family further away.
I haven't enjoyed anything Kanye has done since his sped-up soul sample era, and even then it was only the production that worked for me. The only Kanye-related project I ever return to is the Common album he produced. I keep trying to figure out what everyone else connects to but I'm still at a loss. That being said, I always appreciate your analysis and videos!
A few notes: -I'd recommend to listen to DS2 to get into future. I would say his music is more about the vibe/ feeling it brings, rather than the lyrical or musical quality... - please listen to Saint Pablo more, it's one of the best songs on tlop. About donda deluxe I have to agree though, it's horrible and ruined an amazing album. -I think you will like xxxtentation, a lot of his songs feel like this. Check moonlight, sad!, changes, remedy for a broken heart. All from the album "? " -about this review. I love it and absolutely agree. I think the whole album process is sort of a performance art Cheers!
About the song security, I think it is wrong too however that is why I like it. Like Earl sweatshirt said about his new album art reflects life and like you say art is a self portrait so it feels wrong to cut emotions he feels during the divorce
Love your channel and the in depth analysis of music... buuuuuut XXX was loved before his untimely death... he was arguably the number 1 guy for this generation and since he passed the new era has been really dry... just letting you know he was everything before death unlike other artist who have recently passed and THEN their music shoots up the charts
Always love hearing your take Prof! I’m not the biggest Future fan, but I enjoyed his collab album with Drake (What a time to be Alive), EVOL, and DS2. But you need to listen to Xxxtentacion! Both his album “?” and “17” are phenomenal!!! That kid was so talented. He could rap a ton of flows, sing like an angel, scream like the devil. I think he was poised to the lead the new school. His death was a serious loss for all music fans. As for music like Too easy… maybe (early) Cashmere cat? Jpegmafia? Flume?
X doesn't seem value the idea that an album has to be airtight. It doesn't matter though, since he finds ways to create a completely authentic and enjoyable experience in his albums. He leaves the good and the ugly on his projects, as that messiness ties into the themes of his music. If I had to pick one project, I'd say listen to A GHETTO CHRISTMAS CAROL.
This album is a mess. A very interesting mess that I’m very excited to see evolve. Some amazing tracks on here with some more work they could be perfect.
Save Me by Future is his best album. Shortest one and there is no filler. Probably his most retrospective and mature album, and maybe his most artistic as well. It’s the most underrated. Most of his albums are definitely dark, but this is where he confronts that’s in the most sorrowful way. No hits on the album, but it show the best side of him.
It’s like trap R&B with drowned in a disgusting amount of autotune. “Love thy enemies” in particular actually has some really beautiful lyrics. It’s the album no one talks about, but should be considered way more when looking at trap as whole.
Donda 2 is finished? This feels like Pablo but even more of a messy rollout. Still like Louie Bag Also Monster, Beast Mode, DS2, 56 Nights, and What A Time To Be Alive was Future's best project run. Best one would be DS2 due to Metro Boomin production(I Serve the Base song is so hard)
DS2 is a very artistic take on modern trap music and still doesn’t sound dated at all after almost 8 years. From what I see it’s considered his magnum opus. I’m not a huge Future fan or anything but I enjoyed Monster too

you're the only person who talks about Kanye and mentions "jouissance" love it
not as much as I love it when people love it.

Also, fantastic songs that were omitted like 530, Maintenance and Mr. Miyagi have leaked in their final forms as well. I could send you a copy if you want, since it's not on the stem player.
why did you put the Troll toll song in my head?!?! i didn’t think about it the first time, but now i won’t be able to help it 😫😖
"The best Future album? Not the one with the most hits, the best Future Album" Your answer is "The Wizrd"
Futures best album is DS2 is my opinion. Either that or his self titled
I don't think it's finished at all but it's fascinating that we're seeing it in this state. It would be nice to see you come back to this
'bout to enjoy this next hour! 👌
another fantastic video thank you
Future - Save Me EP
Glad you finally understand the greatness of Future prof, top 3 hip hop artist of the last 10 years
DS2 is a good entry point but Monster is his most raw, aggressive, and best album
ALRIGHT, We gotta get subscribes to 50K so we can hear Skye's Top 3 Kanye Albums!
i liked listening to this vid while washing the dishes, the final clips were super cute
“Excellent!”
Said in my Mr.Burns voice
When donda 2 is finished it's gonna be amazing
Could you do a video on why Kanye is more important then Picasso?
Monster is a must listen, DS2 is his most well known album, but this project really helped build his name and sound.
You must must must listen to 17 by xxx. It is the most emotionally impactful album I’ve ever listened to.
Albums
17 - similar vibe to xxxtentaction's sound on Donda 2
? - His most popular and streamed album
Revenge - His debut
Great explenation!
listen to "?" by xxx, even Kendrick co-signed it when it released
I made a mistake, meant the album “17” which was his debut.
He didn't talk about Soulja Boy's verse :(
A few notes:
-I'd recommend to listen to DS2 to get into future.
-about this review. I love it and absolutely agree. I think the whole album process is sort of a performance art
Cheers!
Can you review YEEZUS PLEASE!!!!!
DS2 is nice but my favourite future project is 56 nights, it's really short and all the songs are great
never in my life thought I’d hear someone else besides me say they thought about the troll toll song when they heard broken road lmaooo
will you review the new beach house album!?
I’m not the biggest future fan either, but his best work in my opinion is monster. Really good music
check out 'the wizrd' by future, perhaps you will find some insight into his appeal...avaa
And please listen to Beastmode 2 by future. It might change your opinion on his. Its a more vulnerable future
where'd the ye painting/drawing/print come from?
Stem player ? Very mysterious. Looks like a tiny flying Saucer.
i really would want a maroon drumpess shirt
Donda deluxe has a physical release it’s on cd
HNDRXX is super underrated in my opinion, people just don't like his singing as much as his rapping but it's my favorite for sure
If u want a future album check out monster or DS2
if u check out DS2 atleast listen to the song Codeine Crazy
Did you ever rerank the Kanye albums?
Always love hearing your take Prof!
I’m not the biggest Future fan, but I enjoyed his collab album with Drake (What a time to be Alive), EVOL, and DS2.
But you need to listen to Xxxtentacion! Both his album “?” and “17” are phenomenal!!! That kid was so talented. He could rap a ton of flows, sing like an angel, scream like the devil. I think he was poised to the lead the new school. His death was a serious loss for all music fans.
As for music like Too easy… maybe (early) Cashmere cat? Jpegmafia? Flume?
"It's never done."
Monster is futures masterpiece in my opinon (Codeine Crazy top 5 hiphop song imo) but DS2 is also really solid
Was your stem player acting out in your car?
I noticed that thumbnail change! Target was green, now it's pink
It’s actually a stylized Shem Player I drew for my ever so unpopular merch. 😀
@@professorskye Very creative! Love it!😄
Donda 1 has already had a physical release on cd, its the deluxe mix you hate tho
Please listen to Future’s DS2
Still like Louie Bag
Also Monster, Beast Mode, DS2, 56 Nights, and What A Time To Be Alive was Future's best project run.
Best one would be DS2 due to Metro Boomin production(I Serve the Base song is so hard)
Listen to HNDRXX
Because you like how future sounds on this album: The WIZRD
