  • GVA airport is partly in France and partly in Switzerland. Car rental counters exist on both sides but French prices are often cheaper than Swiss. However, cars on the French side don't come with Swiss toll stickers (required for motorways) or with winter tires/chains (required in the mountains in winter)

Hello, we are renting a car from the same airport this summer going to Chamonix. What do you mean by French rental doesn’t have Swiss toll sticker? Is it like a toll pass and does that mean we’ll need to grab a ticket instead? Any advice you could provide? Thank you!

To get to Chamonix from the airport there's a small section of Swiss highway. That's the fastest route. You need a Swiss toll sticker to drive that section. Cars rented from the French side don't usually come with that sticker. If you pick up your car and notice no Swiss sticker, stop at a gas station *before* you get on the highway to pick one up. Else force your GPS (e.g. Google Maps) to use a avoid tolls for until you're out of Switzerland (will take longer)

Thank you! We just learnt our lesson too. We thought Canada would use our EZ pass. Nope! And we just received their toll bill with tons of extra charges!
