Segovia really understood phrasing and how to bring out all the colors on the guitar. Phrasing is probably one of the more difficult facets of instrumental artistry and singing to master. Especially in opera.
great video. Great teachers are so enjoyable to watch as they impart their wisdom. He works his magic with his pupil. I am sure she felt honored to have him share his knowledge with her. Master classes are so fun. What a gift to the world he was. Glad they captured this on tape.
While it's great to see footage of Segovia teaching it is also a helpful tool for guitarists because if you don't have a teacher you can use guitar tab for the chaconne and get instructions from the master himself.
Absolutely amazing the difference ! That´s why on youtube he is critizized and in the music world, between really sensitive people, he´s a MASTER of interpretation. We´re not talking of Justin Bieber, but a master wich reputation build within his playing and toning...! Amazed ?
I think the way I play this piece would make Segovia furious, but Bach smile... that is because I think Bach smiles at every moment someone plays his music.
segovia came in for a lot of criticism for the over expressive way he played bach. Personally I LOVE it and I really like the way Alirio diaz plays it too...heavily influenced obviously by this fine teacher. Very interesting little video. Great posting.
I wonder if Segovia ever played a wrong note on a recording or in concert. I'm not really familiar with all the pieces he played but I can't recall hearing anything that made me go "ouch". Probably why he was da bomb in his day.
cant you all be happy that we are sittng in on a class with one of the greatest guitar players ever . man if you can do better then post a vid i would love to learn....
Segovia is a legendary player, fundamentally important in the history of classical guitar, but he wasn't a perfectionist compared to more modern players. He often makes up his own rhythm instead of sticking to what's written on the page.
It just depends on the student. He wasn't f***ing around. He was passionate, determined and not always right, but he did everything with conviction that could melt a bank vault.
I love how sloppy segovia plays, and yet still sounds like his guitar was his own voice. It's like his little "mistakes" don't even sound bad. No matter how many times I listen to another interpretation, Segovia's still sounds the best to me.
Segovia: play it like me or it stinks. One of the most beautiful makers of sound and also one of the worst teachers of all. John Williams nailed him on that. Who knows maybe he needed to be that way in order to achieve his greatness but also to crush students spirits
Brigitte Zaczek, the pretty girl on the video, is nowadays teaching at the University of Music in Vienna. She is the perfect example how some Segovia´s students moved on and became much better pedagogues (and musicians) than he actually was. She is at the moment dedicated to romantic guitar music played on original instruments. It´s not a coincidence that she is one of the few students for whom Segovia showed some respect on the videos. He treated other people so roughly :-((
I taught CIS in college for 2.5 years and taught guitar at a HUGE music store in Memphis, TN and from home until finger injuries forced me to stop. What WOULD indicate that I have any proficiency in teaching? I had over 30 students a week. I doubt you'll really want to go much further with this. It is usually the people who make a bald accusation w/o evidence who run off when they are exposed as ignorant on the topic at hand. Your move.
"Don't go so fast," he says, yet students all over the world right this second get judged on whether it takes them 16 minutes or 13 minutes to complete this song as if it's a factory spitting out donuts. I sense irony when I see people trying to teach formalizations of "Segovia Style" when he taught himself to play, and just plain loved the music out loud for us for so many decades. We are to love the music or just shut up really...
@Soulfree2008 True that. I'll never be "technically" perfect because I broke my fingers so many times in Little League and Babe Ruth baseball and stuff. But I "LOVE" classical guitar so much and I love the music so much while I play it that decades of playing the guitar anyhow is surely paying off. :) cheers
@LOLUWANTFRIESWITHDAT While I think he gives her a lot of good insight on how to speak the language of the instrument more effectively, he does seem to "correct" a lot of her flourishes or decorations. I think that sort of goes against the baroque spirit of performer's preference and improvisation. It becomes more about how Segovia chooses to express himself. There's no truly "wrong" way to play a baroque piece. That being said, he does a good job of getting her to be less mechanical.
It seems that she practiced the piece a lot, but at the end of the rapid scales she appears quite tired, maybe because she followed original Segovia's digits :-) Anyway, this seems to be the only video that shows Segovia playing live some "slices" of the Chaconne, isn't it?
I dont feel bad for them,I mean, this is good for them to learn. And someone said Segovia is an angry man xD, not really, I just think he is trying to help. I wish I played with him...
okay. my king to your king. Captured annnnnnnd CHECKMATE! :) Although we both know a king can't capture another king. I just thought since we were in fantasy land I'd continue right along. :) hehehe
@guitarjag72 @guitarjag72 Exactly... Him teaching the 'feeling' is precisely why people took master classes with him... Really isn't that the point of a master class? And Segovia in many ways was a sloppy player (compared to John Williams for example) but he had more feeling in his little finger than most do in their whole being...
The part I didn't like was when he was just playing along. As if he just couldn't let THEM play then just stop them when he's wanting to show them something and THEN play. Not play all over their playing. Get ready for thumbs down.
Watching this, one could only imagine what it must've been like to be a student of Mozart's or Da Vinci as they were imparting their craft on their students. This may be as close as we'll get to seeing a classical master at work.
That's not Segovia but the student. She didn't want to stop & watch the Segovia playing. Instead, she keep playing herself when Segovia try to interrupt her & show her his interpretation.
Nope. THere is this neat thing called "language" and it has cool words like "wait" and "stop" and "hold on for a second" etc. It's called communication. Playing along as a student tries to show you what they are doing is VERY distracting to the student. Hearing your playing AND the teachers is bad. All the thumbs down I got were from people who have NOT taught and NOT thought about it (or cannot understand).
the lady is "entertaining" and the teacher is "sharing an experience".. quite the different in the channelling of the sounds, and the story being told...
Now, there's a point. If you supposedly can't be taught "feeling", what tha hell is he doing? hahah Well, my take is Segovia was teaching his way and that was that. You want lessons? you do it his way. Don't like it? Don't sign up.
Lmfao what Segovia was showing was the sustain technique to hold your fingers until the chord or notes start to fade away into the next progression. This is why he was the master and not 1 of his students ever learned his touch technique. If you play it like a machine it sounds non human. Segovia the master for a reason.
imagine if you spoke spanish... I'm sure it may be a little less hard than in english. he's correct and is very musical.. the man redefined the guitar.
Well, of course there's language but Segovia seems to have some difficulties in spoken english (as you can see throughout the video). And, I think one should know his/her position there, a student must listen to the teacher.
But you avoided my pt to attack me and paint me as some ignorant fool. To play along WHILE the other person is playing is not very conducive to LISTENING to the student and then stopping them where appropriate. If I were trying to play a piece and he started playing along, I'd stop. wait. and then start again. I taught guitar. I have a degree in computers. I played guitar for 30 years. I know the ratio between frets (12th root of 2). Do you?
@Unpromoted I second that. However, it must be noted that someone like Segovia - being as good as he was - was a performer, not a teacher. The saddest thing of all in Western society is people mistake these two. They are mutually exclusive. Teaching is a skill that needs to be learned. It's a shame people think because one can do something they are also qualified to teach it. It's absurd.
Esa escala del final es muy difícil. No le sale bien, capaz en su casa le sale bien, pero ahí está Segovia, que no le gustó como le salió....El Gran Maestro hace un: mmmm. Habrá sido terrible ese momento.
The trouble with a lot of classical performers is that they lack passion. Bach was a very passionate man and wrote from the heart, not from a book of maths, even though one can find mathematical meter in his music. His Toccata and Fugue in D minor is not exactly 'precious'. It is thunderous and VERY loud, and should be played with heartfelt gusto.
it's funny to hear the difference between the two. i'm sure she is a great player in her own right, but to hear her next to segovia makes her sound like an amateur lol
he does not know about music, he haven't learn to hear music, jimi hendrix was only a lucky lick guy, but segovia, was a combination from knowledge, feeling, and composition skill.
True but, she has brass ones for doing it. Also, you don't get taught by the man being a washed up no talent. Who ever this woman gave birth to should feel blessed, if she did. I'm not railin on anyone here just saying that she is far better than I. A master and his student.
When the Maestro spoke, you fvcking listened!
Segovia was the bravest classical guitarist ever - real balls to the wall approach to playing!
What a wonderful UA-cam find. Thank you!!!
Amazed ?
fantastic glimpse into history - thanks for posting.
Un documentaire exceptionnel du maître
Excelente, sin duda tambien es como un Gran tutorial para tocar esta magnifica obra :D
I wonder if Segovia ever played a wrong note on a recording or in concert. I'm not really familiar with all the pieces he played but I can't recall hearing anything that made me go "ouch". Probably why he was da bomb in his day.
The Chaconne was Bach's most epic work, without a doubt.
cant you all be happy that we are sittng in on a class with one of the greatest guitar players ever . man if you can do better then post a vid i would love to learn....
Top notch.
stunning !!!
Wow, you can tell that the master was strict and a perfectionist. But hey, thats why he was and still is Andrés Segóvia.
Segovia is a legendary player, fundamentally important in the history of classical guitar, but he wasn't a perfectionist compared to more modern players. He often makes up his own rhythm instead of sticking to what's written on the page.
it sounds really cool when two play at the same time...like a 12 string almost
Who is she? What a great way to teach. Very honest and right to the point.
It just depends on the student. He wasn't f***ing around. He was passionate, determined and not always right, but he did everything with conviction that could melt a bank vault.
grande maestro
che sogno.. una masterlass con segovia.. peccato che ci abbia lasciato.. un elogio al Grande Chitarrista..
i whish to be one of your student if i was born in that era
I love how sloppy segovia plays, and yet still sounds like his guitar was his own voice. It's like his little "mistakes" don't even sound bad. No matter how many times I listen to another interpretation, Segovia's still sounds the best to me.
Awesome video. Thanx 4 posting it for everyone to enjoy. : )
she's not Galina Vale she is Brigitte Zaczek.
(Thank you LogenWilliams )
I totally agree with you!! I would add Alvaro Pierri, Pavel Steidl, B.Zaczek, Marco Socías, etc...
Segovia: play it like me or it stinks. One of the most beautiful makers of sound and also one of the worst teachers of all. John Williams nailed him on that. Who knows maybe he needed to be that way in order to achieve his greatness but also to crush students spirits
thanks for sharing this...
@60UnNamed09 they call it Chaconne, Violin Partiata no 2 in Dm BWV 1004 -Johann Sebastian Bach
Brigitte Zaczek, the pretty girl on the video, is nowadays teaching at the University of Music in Vienna.
She is the perfect example how some Segovia´s students moved on and became much better pedagogues (and musicians) than he actually was.

It´s not a coincidence that she is one of the few students for whom Segovia showed some respect on the videos. He treated other people so roughly :-((
@LOLUWANTFRIESWITHDAT I agree. And at least when he's happy, you know for sure that he is.
Your english is correct, and you make a valid point.
You and NWLAstrings :)
She does not need to be taught dynamics. She is more of a musician than he ever was. :-)
I taught CIS in college for 2.5 years and taught guitar at a HUGE music store in Memphis, TN and from home until finger injuries forced me to stop. @greywrath he actually says "C" it's just hard to hear because of his spanish accent :)
We are to love the music or just shut up really...
so very true
andres segovia is my idol i think no 1 will ever be beter than the master, watch me also leo rene or leo rene dima-ala thanks!!
Me encanta ese sarcasmo Jajaja....
Pero mi favorita sigue siendo para solo violín, simplemente majestuosa!
she's a great player but you just want her to stop and hear it from the master everytime he plays a little bit
@guitarfan1979 i think around 1965
cheers
I've broken all my fingers too but I don't think it's harmed my guitar playing. They healed back stronger!
@LOLUWANTFRIESWITHDAT While I think he gives her a lot of good insight on how to speak the language of the instrument more effectively, he does seem to "correct" a lot of her flourishes or decorations. @sircloud7 Agree!

Great posting 5*****
Claude
@Aurelius27x No, it was not. The great Passacaglia was. But Chaconne is sure number 2 :-)
At the beginning she had to correct a C, not an E
as Segovia says.(just noticed)
ojalá en algún mundo paralelo, en otra vida, tenga por abuelo un guitarrista como Segovia jiji
she had a bit of trouble at the end but she was pretty good.
I dont feel bad for them,I mean, this is good for them to learn. And someone said Segovia is an angry man xD, not really, I just think he is trying to help. I wish I played with him...
"dont go so fast.. let every phrase.." hes huge!
Breeze
Este hombre encargaba piezas fáciles para su propio lucimiento. Julian Bream nos legó el Nocturnal
okay. my king to your king. Captured annnnnnnd CHECKMATE! :) Although we both know a king can't capture another king. I just thought since we were in fantasy land I'd continue right along. :) hehehe
What caliber of strings does he play ? Does anyone know ?
@ugaru01 In comparison to Segovia, everyone was young.
This woman is not so bad
@guitarjag72 @guitarjag72 Exactly... Him teaching the 'feeling' is precisely why people took master classes with him... Really isn't that the point of a master class?
And Segovia in many ways was a sloppy player (compared to John Williams for example) but he had more feeling in his little finger than most do in their whole being...
EL PROBLEMA QUE TUVIMOS MUCHOS AÑOS ES QUE ESTE HOMBRE ERA EL DIOS DE LA GUITARRA
I know that. :)
The part I didn't like was when he was just playing along. As if he just couldn't let THEM play then just stop them when he's wanting to show them something and THEN play. Not play all over their playing. Get ready for thumbs down.

Sí, ¿es cierto que le metía mano a las partituras que hacían para él?
@kchaney56 How do i reeeeach theeeeese kiiiiids :D
This was actually in a Jay-Z song. It was a sample.
That's not Segovia but the student. She didn't want to stop & watch the Segovia playing. Instead, she keep playing herself when Segovia try to interrupt her & show her his interpretation.
excuse me, what year is this from ?
Nope. THere is this neat thing called "language" and it has cool words like "wait" and "stop" and "hold on for a second" etc. It's called communication. 1004, Partita un Dm for violin solo.
the lady is "entertaining" and the teacher is "sharing an experience".. quite the different in the channelling of the sounds, and the story being told...
its galina vale isn't she?
Now, there's a point. If you supposedly can't be taught "feeling", what tha hell is he doing? hahah Well, my take is Segovia was teaching his way and that was that. You want lessons? you do it his way. Don't like it? Don't sign up.
amazing dosent it make you want to pick up a guitar and put your heart and soul into it
da dove lo hai preso
es una ver.... dadera granseda

the beginning was hilarious. "miss chaconna.."
you dont really hear about his sense of humor....
@Unpromoted

no comprendo muy bien tu comentario..
The girl sounds very good, That not true , she is very talented guitarist!
how good you must be to find flaws in that woman's playing !!
she is probably a granny by now LOL teaching her grandchildren (one can only hope so)
NOBODY PLAYED LA CHACONNE LIKE SEGOVIA AND HIS PUPIL PARKENNING !!
Hah, I know right? This video is probably close to 50 years old.

On many pieces, I don't like Sergovia's phrasing at all. It is true, he has done more than anyone for the classical but there are better players now.
You obviously do not know what you are talking about. It is well known that Segovia was a brilliant mentor as well as player. Ask Bream.
:-)
it's funny to hear the difference between the two. i'm sure she is a great player in her own right, but to hear her next to segovia makes her sound like an amateur lol
he forces her to feel the same way he feels, and i think hear guitar is out of tone, at the very beginning.
but he is teaching her...and they suck. None of them have any feeling as he probably says
he does not know about music, he haven't learn to hear music, jimi hendrix was only a lucky lick guy, but segovia, was a combination from knowledge, feeling, and composition skill.
