my top 10 would be 1 Burzum: Hvis Lyset Tar Oss 2 Taake Doedskvad 3 Walknut : Graveforests And Their Shadows 4 Darkthrone: A Blaze In The Northern Sky 5 Horna: Sanojesi Aarelle 6 Gorgoroth : Pentagram 7 Graveland: Following The Voice Of Blood 8 Clandestine Blaze: Deliveres Of Faith 9 Ygg: Ygg 10 Drudkh: Autumn Aurora
"Quintessence" is what made my balls drop when I was getting into Black Metal ages ago Mayhem, Burzum, Celtic Frost, Immortal, bands like that of course... also, first time I heard 'The Somberlain' by Dissection , I was blackened forever. Always wish Dissection had a bigger discography , thanks for the reviews, will check out some of those bands/albums \m/
I could not agree more about Det Som Engang Var. It doesn't get any better than this, in my humble opinion. This song is the epitome of darkness and death.
My stone cold black metal classics are: Venom - Welcome to Hell Venom - Black Metal Venom - At War with Satan Venom - Possessed Venom - Calm Before the Storm Venom - Prime Evil Venom - Temples of Ice Venom - The Waste Lands Venom - Cast in Stone Venom - Resurrection Venom - Metal Black Venom - Hell Venom - Fallen Angels Venom - From the Very Depths tru kvlt metal right here BRO! BROOTAL SHIT and REAL black metal right here BRO! If you don't like these albums, then you're a POSER......
Metal Toucan This was obviously sarcasm lol but I do like venom tho. There just not black metal that I agree, they just influenced it and I respect them for that.
Good-ass picks Shaun. Excellent calls with the Belketre/Vlad Tepes split and Moonblood. I had a weird Belketre demo collection picked out for mine, Torgeist too, but both got the Axe and I went with Antaeus instead. That Moonblood shit man.....insanely good. I always considered them a pretty well heralded classic band, but I only really started digging them a few years ago. For the longest time I just couldn't hang with high end, hissy trebly sort of BM outside of Darkthrone and a few others. Cheers man.
before all the bands started to look and sound alike... 1) Venom - Welcome To Hell 2) Venom - Black Metal 3) Mercyful Fate - Melissa 4) Venom - At War With Satan 5) Slayer - Show No Mercy 6) Hellhammer - Satanic Rites 7) Slayer - Hell Awaits 8) Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales/Emperors Return 9) Destruction - Sentence Of Death/Infernal Overkill 10) Bathory - The Return... 11) Sodom - In The Sign Of Evil/Obsessed By Cruelty 12) Exorcist - Nightmare Theater 13) Sacarfago - I. N. R. I.
I have LHDNE on vinyl as well, but I also have MNQ and generally listen to it when I need a Forteresse fix. I've never heard/seen anyone say LHDNE is their favorite bm ever, but that just shows you have good taste and actually have an opinion of your own. Kudos. Going to have to drag that album out and give it another deep listen. Thanks for the inspiration, though, nearly three years ago. \m/
CountBlagorath No offense intended man and I didn't know that, but fuck that, amazing records but what do you think of Sarcofago and Sigh first album? Even Euronymous said that Sigh were an amazing Black Metal band (and the first japanese BM band too) keep the amazing job!
None taken. Its just something I get a lot. Sarcofago fucking rules and Scorn Defeat is easily the best Sigh record and honestly, I don't care for the others.
Burzum (DSP) , Blaze in the northern sky and de mysteriis were the 1st 3 BM releases i ever heard, was listening to early 90s DM at the time and yeah lets just say the death metal ended for a while after hearing those 3 albums
15.Armagedda - Only true Believers 14.Dark Fortress - Seance (idgaf what ppl say about this band, they are talented Germans) 13.Arckanum - Fran Marder 12.Judas Iscariot - Distant in Solitary Night 11.DeathSpellOmega - FAS 10. Mayhem - Daemon 9.Moonblood - Taste our German Steel 8.Grand Belial's Key - Mocking the Philanthropist 7.Graveland - Creed of Iron 6.Nokturnal Mortum - Voice of Steel 5.Horna - Hiidentorni 4.Obtained Enslavement - Withcraft 3.Inquisition - ITIROTAC 2.Godkiller - TROTMA 1.Abigor - Channeling the quintessence of Satan I recommend these bands and albums to whoever reads this, they are essential BM classics.
Nice, I just listened to Panzerfaust today, Quintessence is probably my favorite from that record as well. I do love "A wind of sorrow" and "His last winter" too, haha.
Sounds like you're about to break into tears the whole video. Someone should put this review to cavernous music and make a DSBM album, the theme of which should be how hurt you are by idk... "Painfully Overlooked" stuff?
Love that you showed off and the forest dreams eternally. My personal favorite from behemoth is storming near the Baltic. The Satanist…. I mean it’s fine I guess. It isn’t bad, but Forrest, storming near the Baltic, grom, and pan demonic incantations is the best behemoth
my stone cold black metal classics are: Ulver: Nattens madrigal Taake: Noregs vaapen Windir: Arntor Ragnarok: arising realm Djevel: Norske ritualer Burzum: Hvis lyset tar oss Mayhem: De mysteriis dom Sathanas Darkthrone: Panzerfaust Blodhemn: Brenn alle Bruer Natas: På veg... Til Helvette
wayne stafford - I have got years on you, my friend. And I will be listening to all things Metal/Hardcore/Punk/Crust/D-Beat until my maker comes to take me home.
It's okay i was just saying that i started listening black metal for the past 15 years but i have been listening metal since i was 15 years old just black metal is kinda new to me and i'm liking it
my stone cold black metal classics . 1 . venom welcome to hell 1981 . 2 . bathory bathory 1984 . 3 . we have we have damn near the same list haha i wonder why..... mine will be up tonight or tomorrow. but i love this new video trend. Everybody has their own perspective and their is certain albums everybody agrees with. I feel like that keeps it interesting as well as relate-able. also, forteresse got taken off of this list. i had 15 including that album, as well as watains first album. Awesome fuckin video
Hell yeah, Dark Medieval Times was also the first black metal album I heard aside from Dimmu. It's on par as my all time favorite album with Limbonic Art's Moon In The Scorpio
Moonblood's "Blut und Krieg" being a double LP makes perfect sense - the original LP release only had 7 songs. The tracks on the D-side "My Evil Soul" and "I am All" had originally only been featured on the cassette version of the album as bonus tracks. So you got lucky with your bootleg since the official re-release did not include these songs on vinyl. Instead they added "Sob a lua do bode" as a second LP, which makes even less sense.
I've had that Vlad Tepes/Belketre split on CD for years. Fucking love that album. I was entirely unaware that it was released on vinyl as well. I'm real fucking jealous about that. \m/
Awesome as always, check out my response if you can. Mine seems a little more "contemporary" than most. I also did a lot less than everyone else, limited collection yet. Good to have you back Shaun!
Great list, really admire your reviewing style, shows real appreciation and a knowledge of the genre without the nonsensical bias shown by certain other reviewers (looking at you razorfist....reduces Burzum to nothing but a poor rip off of Bathory, totally refuses to accept or recognise the power and atmosphere Varg brought to the genre).
Could someone list all the albums mentioned in this video? I'm just getting into black metal and want to listen to all these records, but don't want to constantly skip around in the video and want to know how to spell the band names.
If you like black metal I have a request for you. Listen to teitanblood. Its The most intense black metal related music out there. the best album that they have is called death
Mr. Blagorath, compare Darkthrones 'Circle the Wagons' with the other/later 80s/retro style releases or in general even earlier LPs, -- actually the only one that works for me (as a conceptual record and therefore collectable piece) as to the second half of their discography. ua-cam.com/video/fpTx3VqDLa0/v-deo.html
Hvys Lyset Tar Oss is also my favorite album from Burzum. However, the 4th song, seems to me like Varg was messing with a keyboard and decided to just leave it there, to make me always ask: Why the Hell is this out of place song on this awesome album ?
as for satyricon, 1993-1999, i dont bother with anything they've done after rebel and even then i only like 4 tracks from that album, cant stand anything they've done since.
I would say that that album (Dead As Dreams) along with something like Si Monumentum, have shaped black metal more in the last 18 years than anything Varg has done (who wasn't doing much more than adding casio tracks to Von songs.) another unwarranted opinion - Bergtatt is better than any Satyricon album.
That's absolutely absurd. Varg essentially created atmospheric black metal and ambient black metal with his third and fourth records. Those record were groundbreaking since there was nothing like that at the time. I'll fully admit that I'm not the most familiar with Von, but I don't hear any Von within Burzum. As for Bergtatt, fantastic album, but the first two Satyricon records are way better in my opinion.
falling asleep on a Casio while playing distorted punk chords isn't really groundbreaking :) seems the disagreement here is one of aesthetic over composition, but whatever, at least there's no shit ass Watain on the list.
Because most people want to hear why you picked that album. Just saying "Yeah, so I picked Morbid Tales by Celtic Frost because it kicks ass" doesn't give much as to why you think its a classic which was the point of these videos.
For whom this videos is made? Every true metalhead know Celtic Frost albums are metal classics. Why are you "advertising" as classic the Forteresse 2nd album? Why not to hype, e.g. "Metal Noir..."album (which in fact is raw black metal) of the same band. It is because you only have Forteresse' (ambient ) album in your hands and never heard the previous Forteresse work? Haha!!!
This isn't a video meant to introduce people to new bands and shit like that. This is meant to be what I consider to be black metal classics. I own the CD of Metal Noir Quebecois, I just picked the second album because its my favorite black metal album of all time and its over 10 years old. I can't tell if you just don't get the point of the video, or if you're just being an asshole to be an asshole because you don't have fuck else to do.
Dark Medieval Times is just... cold af. amazing kvlt material.
TheAccused I use kvlt as in "Classic"
One of a few UA-camrs I can listen to for extended periods of time. Enjoying your channel.
my top 10 would be
1 Burzum: Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
2 Taake Doedskvad
3 Walknut : Graveforests And Their Shadows
4 Darkthrone: A Blaze In The Northern Sky
5 Horna: Sanojesi Aarelle
6 Gorgoroth : Pentagram
7 Graveland: Following The Voice Of Blood
8 Clandestine Blaze: Deliveres Of Faith
9 Ygg: Ygg
10 Drudkh: Autumn Aurora
I love your passion and dedication for extreme music, man.
Samael - Worship Him, really important and predates the whole Norwegian scene.
My compliments: you are competent and passionate, and also offer a brief insight into each pick.
"Quintessence" is what made my balls drop when I was getting into Black Metal ages ago
Mayhem, Burzum, Celtic Frost, Immortal, bands like that of course... also, first time I heard 'The Somberlain' by Dissection , I was blackened forever. Always wish Dissection had a bigger discography , thanks for the reviews, will check out some of those bands/albums \m/
Radie Grebdron, Same thing with Hordes of Nebulah. And I'm not just talking about the song...
Quintessence sucks, its the same riff over and over again
The vocal is just a cry from hell and the repetitive riff in the background creates great atmosphere.
I BARELY GOT WET ON MY FEEEEEEEEET!!!!
Great list man. I absolutely love every single one of your picks, especially Det Som Engang Var.
You absolutely nailed it when talking about Celtic Frost.
you have a lot of all time favorite albums lol. j/k bro. Love your channel. Keep up the good work my dude
Nice list! It's awesome that you include a Forteresse album. The pronunciation is close! haha!
Pretty close yeah ! haha
Hey dude, killer picks. I discovered Nokturnal Mortum from your video, very epic memorble shit just like you said. Thanks for the video!
I could not agree more about Det Som Engang Var. It doesn't get any better than this, in my humble opinion. This song is the epitome of darkness and death.

Alright
metaljoe91 Fuck Venom, they used to remind me of a dark version of Queen trying to cover Motorhead songs.
Lol this is not the place for venom fans
Metal Toucan This was obviously sarcasm lol but I do like venom tho. There just not black metal that I agree, they just influenced it and I respect them for that.
metaljoe91 well put
So glad you mentioned that satyricon album
Good-ass picks Shaun. Excellent calls with the Belketre/Vlad Tepes split and Moonblood. 13) Sacarfago - I. N. R. I.
Otto Erickson Slayer is not BM
Mitchell Crawford It influenced many black metal acts tho and its a very dark thrash metal record
Mitchell Crawford Who really is, anyway? It was always meant as an exclusive thing for Venom, but people kind of ran with the term.
I have LHDNE on vinyl as well, but I also have MNQ and generally listen to it when I need a Forteresse fix. I've never heard/seen anyone say LHDNE is their favorite bm ever, but that just shows you have good taste and actually have an opinion of your own. Kudos. One of my faves will always be DSO’s Si Monumentum Requires Circumspice
Mutiilation: vampires of black imperial blood
Absolutely blown away. Just listened to the first track on the Vlad Tepes/Belketre split... Phenomenal.
Great list. Props for Horna, Blasphemy, Mayhem. Gotta check a few of these other ones out too.
Agree with you one hundred percent on your top pick... I remember when the first time I heard "Det Som En Gang Var", I was blown away by it \m/
That Burzum vinyl has me jealous man.
cheers.
The split CD was with Enslaved, not Emperor. Although they did a 3 track demo tape before then called 'The forest is my throne' which I have..
DUR! I had Enslaved in mind when I said Emperor. I need to stop drinking before I make these videos..
Dude you're so lucky to own a copy of that Forteresse album. It's impossible to find lol. I really dig Themes Pour La Rebellion too.
Amazing and great stuff, but why does he sounds like he's about to start crying at any second?
I never understood all the comments I get saying this. I had throat surgery when I was in first grade and always had a shaky voice. I can't help it.
CountBlagorath No offense intended man and I didn't know that, but fuck that, amazing records but what do you think of Sarcofago and Sigh first album? Even Euronymous said that Sigh were an amazing Black Metal band (and the first japanese BM band too) keep the amazing job!

iTunes removed Lunar Poetry from my purchases without even telling me.. now I don’t even have it..
Burzum (DSP) , Blaze in the northern sky and de mysteriis were the 1st 3 BM releases i ever heard, was listening to early 90s DM at the time and yeah lets just say the death metal ended for a while after hearing those 3 albums
Nice one, man, and cool to see what picks you weighed in with... think I'm gonna buckle and upload a response tonight... buuuuut it'll probably suck.
I'm gonna watch it in a little bit. Super excited to watch it!

"Running Through The Woods Aimlessly At Night" totally my favorite BM album that never got made.
You know you are a bm nerd when you enjoy people talk about bm bands Even though you know it all about them.. haha cheers count
Nice, I just listened to Panzerfaust today, Quintessence is probably my favorite from that record as well. I do love "A wind of sorrow" and "His last winter" too, haha.
Sabbat: Evoke & Mayhem bootleg: Dawn of the Black Hearts, were the first two Black metal albums that I bought. I think that I was around 13.
Sounds like you're about to break into tears the whole video. Someone should put this review to cavernous music and make a DSBM album, the theme of which should be how hurt you are by idk... "Painfully Overlooked" stuff?
Have you seen the two new Halloween movies? If so do you like them. I ask because I see your TCM shirt so I assume you like horror

Actually, at 02:10 you are referring to Satyricon/Enslaved (not Emperor!) split album.
The album's title - The Forest Is My Throne / Yggdrasill
Yeah, I feel like a fucking idiot for saying that because in my head, I was thinking Enslaved, but for some reason I said Emperor. Kill me.
Probably because there's also the Enslaved/Emperor split (Hordanes Land/Emperor)
Black Metal...because Stone Cold said say. Austin 3.666 says come to Indonesia.
Hell yeah, Dark Medieval Times was also the first black metal album I heard aside from Dimmu.
It's on par as my all time favorite album with Limbonic Art's Moon In The Scorpio
you read my mind I love the raw sound on live in Leipzig
Moonblood's "Blut und Krieg" being a double LP makes perfect sense - the original LP release only had 7 songs. The tracks on the D-side "My Evil Soul" and "I am All" had originally only been featured on the cassette version of the album as bonus tracks. Strid - Strid (1994) and the End of Life (1993) single
I Shalt Become - Wanderings (1996)
awesome, thanks
I've had that Vlad Tepes/Belketre split on CD for years. Fucking love that album. I was entirely unaware that it was released on vinyl as well. I'm real fucking jealous about that. \m/
Hey count blagorath, what do think of gorgoroth?
In my opinion it's hard to mention morbid tales without the return both had major influence.
Awesome as always, check out my response if you can. Mine seems a little more "contemporary" than most. I also did a lot less than everyone else, limited collection yet. Good to have you back Shaun!
Great video
anyone know where I cAn listen to Vlad Tepes online? Every video's been deleted
The Vlad Tepes song in the description is just a cover of a Vlad Tepes song by some noobs.
gorgoroth tickles my taint
Try a band called silencer that shit is crazy
nice beanie
What,no Clandestine Blaze?
No Immortal?
Summoning - Stronghold
no Shining or Emperor?
Wouldn't consider Shining classic and I don't like anything from Emperor after In The Nightside Eclipse.
Shining are way better musicians than any band on this list, and Emperor's Anthems and IX Equilibrium are masterpieces
Kvist - For Kunsten Maa Vi Evig Vike
Anyone got a link for Vlad tepes? I always struggle to find their stuff online
Angel Espinosa mainly that split count mentioned but anything by them tbh
Dig around some black metal blogspots for mp3's.
Was hoping to see Rotting Christ on this list, easily my favorite black metal band.
Mercyful Fate The Begging.
Feel like I don't need to make this list, your and mine are very similar minus a few picks
No Cradle then? 😂
do you have skinless album?
Great list, really admire your reviewing style, shows real appreciation and a knowledge of the genre without the nonsensical bias shown by certain other reviewers (looking at you razorfist....reduces Burzum to nothing but a poor rip off of Bathory, totally refuses to accept or recognise the power and atmosphere Varg brought to the genre).
Attila is my favorite black metal band lol but in all seriousness battles in the north is my fav
Could someone list all the albums mentioned in this video? I'm just getting into black metal and want to listen to all these records, but don't want to constantly skip around in the video and want to know how to spell the band names.
Check back in an hour or so. I'll link every album in the description.
Classic america #Typhon #Parabellum #Reencanación #Profanatica #Sarcofago #Toten
Forteresse is amazing. But my no 1 is Walknut: Graveforests And Their Shadows
If you like black metal I have a request for you. Listen to teitanblood. Its The most intense black metal related music out there. the best album that they have is called death
Shame on you! Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark is the greatest Black Metal album ever!
I agree 100%. Under the Sign... is Quorthon’s masterpiece and probably the most influential BM album of all time
Man don't you think Les Hivers de notre époque were sounding more epic on the 2008'th version?
The fact that your flags in the background haven't been pressed to get rid ov tbe creases drives me crazy I can't watch anymore ov tbe clip.
1) The type of material wouldn't flatten out and I can't apply heat to it otherwise it'll melt.
2) My room.
3) Stop saying "ov"
like the shirt
Fuck yeah, panzerfaust is the best darkthrone album
Come back
I will soon!
You pronounced hiidentorni actually quite well, but you said only one i letter instead of two in the word hiiden
Mr. Blagorath, compare Darkthrones 'Circle the Wagons' with the other/later 80s/retro style releases or in general even earlier LPs, -- actually the only one that works for me (as a conceptual record and therefore collectable piece) as to the second half of their discography.

Hvys Lyset Tar Oss is also my favorite album from Burzum. However, the 4th song, seems to me like Varg was messing with a keyboard and decided to just leave it there, to make me always ask: Why the Hell is this out of place song on this awesome album ?
I would have shit myself if you did not mention Horna. But at the same time, where the fuck are German BM Legends, Katharsis on your list, brother?
Is that An Aske Poster/Flag that's Cool
as for satyricon, 1993-1999, i dont bother with anything they've done after rebel and even then i only like 4 tracks from that album, cant stand anything they've done since.

"If you dont know this intro you cant say you love black metal" I really love your videos, but that's quite an elitistic thing to say isn't it?
Its the truth.
Dead As Dreams is better than all the Black Metal 101 on your list.
Great album, but I personally don't think of it as a classic.

metalcore convertee talks black metal LMAO
Because I like Zao and Converge means I'm a "metalcore convertee" lmao you're a fucking clown.
I like metalcore and black metal. Not really sure what there is to insult about him
Count bloated and inflamed
@D_Moore Actually try harder next time.
great, i watched this whiney bozo's video on his bands he cannot stand and now he shows up in my feed
Why you people talk too much?...3 min in and with one album displayed...every one wants to explain the background of every album they chosed.
