If Russian troops are ending their own lives it tells me they don’t believe in Russia any more. They don’t believe in its leadership any more. They’ve lost hope. They believe fighting for Russia is worthless. They believe that if Russia was defeated their bloodlines and families would be better off. They believe Russia is corrupt.

Finland's foreign minister contributed an article to the Economist where she explains that time is not on Russia's side. Their rising war costs can no longer be covered by their declining oil revenues and dwindling liquid reserves in their National Wealth Fund. Since they can't borrow internationally they are issuing bonds that are "absorbed by domestic banks, which place the government bonds at the central bank for cash. Essentially, the central bank is printing money". This practice will lead make inflation much worse, making it impossible to sustain the war effort.

In the U.S., that responsibility falls on the Federal Reserve, an independent body focused on minimizing unemployment while maintaining price stability. Imagine fighting on the Front Lines for your Country only to survive and when you get home the the new Communist Gov't gave away all your Property to "the people". I recommend watching the movie Dr Zhivago (1965) for an amazing depiction of just that happening.
When Doctor Zhivago gets home from the front lines not only did they convert his Mansion into a Hotel for the People when Dr Zhivago was gathering planks of wood from the street to burn to keep his child from dying they arrest them and send him to the Gulags.

Fascinating discussion from two highly intelligent minds.
They accurately describe the state of the war and it demonstrates the contrast of reality vs a manipulated perception.
The danger here is the fact that perception shapes politics and policy MORE than reality does.
This is why the battle for the “narrative” is so important and why discussions such as this are so valuable.

@timrider1224 It's taken longer than I would've liked, but Ukrainian R&D is starting to appear. Their Neptune missiles were almost ready when the war started. The unmanned navy is coming along nicely, including adaptation to launch aerial drones and lay mines. I expect torpedoes will be next. I know a little over a year ago, Russia started turning off cell towers near targets (right after the first strike on the oil terminal in Saint Petersburg). I think Russia figured out that SIM cards that work with cellular data were easy to obtain, and no satellite data was necessary. They have started revealing new cruise missiles/long range drones, and have long-range ballistic missiles soon. Russia did use an ICBM to strike the factory that used to build most of the first stage for Antares, but I think that isn't a major issue. Since Ukraine was a big source of not only tanks but aircraft engines, rocket engines, and ICBMs in the USSR, it's only a question of time.

As far as I'm aware the Russian land gains for the war are at a deficit when compared to their peak gains in the opening days of the war. Russia has lost more territory in Ukraine then they have gained.

The fact that hundreds of them are committing suicide rather than die failing to cross the river is tremendous news!
This saves Ukrainian Defenders drones and ammunition from having to wipe them out, and it utterly destroys their morale and appetite for combat.
