Imagine taking your car to your mechanic to get fixed and later finding him on the internet waving his arms in front of your car about how “you’re a little on the crazy side” 😂
I don't think it's crazy to get attached to a car like that. It's almost an antique, and in a few years restorers will be looking for barn-finds of that style. So why give up a good thing? Instead of looking at it like a cheap used beater, view it as a classic, worthy of restoration, but with almost no restoration needed.
Hey, as long as he thinks Tennessee doesn't require emission testing and he gives me an inspection sticker without it, he can call me anything he wants. 😉

Got this vehicle 2 weeks ago as a winter beater and to transport my two dogs without worrying about dirt, mud, fur (shedding) etc. Has the exact engine that Scotty is talking about here and the interior’s leather is is great condition, AC blows cold, shifts smooth, etc. I’m getting some work done on it, (breaks, spark plugs, etc.) and I’m hoping it will last another 100k miles. Thanks Scotty, you removed any doubt I had about this vehicle and now I’m convinced I got a great deal!!! Oh only thing is that it’s not the most fuel efficient, but other then that I’m ok 😎😜😉

The world does not want your deliberative thinking, but you have a point. My vehicles last a very long time and I do no more than is necessary. But I do the necessary maintenance and follow the specifications of the production and the products I use. One thing I know people do not want to accept is that all-short-trips driving does represent severe duty. My vehicle used dinosaur (conventional) oil as original equipment. I use semi-synthetic in it and change it at 2800 miles. The manual says 5W-30 or 10W-30 if the temperature does not go below 0 Fahrenheit. I don't theorize about which one is better in what season. Whatever is on sale, that's what I use. Any low-end or no-name filter is good for 5000 miles. I say, don't pay for specifications you are not going to utilize. Another thing to know is that low-end Group III synthetic oil is just highly refined dinosaur oil. Semi-synthetic is just dinosaur oil with some Group III thrown in. Calculate your oil change interval accordingly if your engine requires synthetic. The cheap stuff will meet the specifications but don't leave it in for an extended period.
I had a 2003 271hp and a 2006 290 hp GMC Envoy with the 4.2 I6. Both went over 210000 miles. Towed a 26' TT all over mid-west and eastern coast with the 06.. The only thing I ever replaced on either of them was an ignition coil. I loved the body style and the ride was very good. Great intermediate SUV"s.

I have owned many cars/trucks with Inline 6 cyl engines. Have never let me down...well ..almost never. One thing that many 6 cyl owners may not know of.. One cylinder head instead of 2 on a v6. Access for service has always been good with I-6. Simple ,Strong torque. Scotty is right , they last too long!
The inline 6 cylinder is a very dependable work horse in all the auto brands, Too bad they didn't stick with it in at least one model, small truck, small SUV, family van, Sad shame
My guess is that they stopped making them due to governments stupid regulations. Once again if the all knowing govt would keep their nose out of things we would all be better off. On another note: I have an 02 S10 pickup with the 2.2L inline 4, rock solid engine, had to rebuild the tranny around 140K,but that was a no brainer even though it cost more than the truck was worth it will still be running long after I die!
I love my Chevrolet Trailblazer 2003 that's a beast handles well love driving my truck i did look at the new 2023 or 2024 chevrolet trailblazer but that crap don't compare to my original trailblazer sure tech & everything is fancy but my truck gon last longer then that new trailblazer plus i love the original look to the trailblazer looks angry & just a beautiful truck i wish chevy kept the look and just added the ' new features ' now a days cars have & kept the real engines & transmissions that would of been great but now it looks like either a camero and a traverse or equinox made love & gave birth to new trailblazer lol anyway new cars now are so much different then the old days i miss checking my engines & transmission fluids now everything is bring to mechanic for them to look under this or that.
I am a rideshare driver. I drive a 2016 Lexus ES 300h which has 242k miles and not a single issue! My passengers think it's a much newer vehicle because it's so lean and newish looking and still rides very smooth and comfortably. I will never buy anything else except for a Toyota or Lexus! Lexus for life, preferably!
I love how he's talking about if you see smoke or there's no pressure that there's a leak and then smoke from the machine comes flying out of the valve cover behind him 😂
Good video. I had a similar issue. It turned out the 2000-2009 Chevy Silverado electric fuel pump gaskets go bad and on the pumps with metal tops can rust until they form a hole and trip the same code. Either way as you said it’s an expensive fix. My 2004 Silverado with a 5.3 is still going with 342,000 miles on the original engine and transmission.
I have an 07 envoy with 135,000 miles that I've owned for 6 years (second owner). I just had to replace the water pump. It never overheated and never leaked. It just made noise and shook. The paint still looks new. I will probably keep this truck for the rest of my life.
My wife inherited a 2004 Trailblazer (EXT) from her father. 111K miles. The "EXT" is 18 inches longer and had a third-row seat. No major issues with Engine or tranny. There have been several minor issues over the years, but it's been reliable transportation. I just popped the hood to see that it does indeed say "Vortex 4200". There are currently three minor things wrong that aren't worth fixing; (1) original CD player no longer works (2) rear defroster doesn't work (3) heater/AC fan speed knob position "5" (highest speed) simply turns the fan off. My first car had a straight six in it - a 1960 Dodge Dart station wagon, with the infamous slant six 225.
There was a problem with 2002 TrailBlazers which were manufactured in 2001. The manufacturing plant had an isolated defect that caused bad cylinder sleeves to make their way into various TrailBlazers with the 4.2 Vortec engine. The bad sleeves are isolated to Trail Blazers that fall within the VIN range of 22100007 to 22358861.
For durability, the 4.2 is an incredible durable and reliable engine. Just change the oil more frequently than the system recommends, along with all the other fluids and this drive train will go forevever. Only slight negative is the lackluster mpg. I'd take this engine over the V8 with cylinder deactivation issues and intake leak any day. Nearly the same hp and torque, very smooth, and easy to maintain.
I have the same year except mine is the GMC version, envoy. She's got 160k and going strong. I replaced the shift servo on the transmission to a corvette servo and my transmission works better. However, she now holds the 1st gear much longer than before. I believe this trucks owner might have had the servo replaced too and that's what the shift delay is. it only does it 1-2 and the rest of the gears it shifts normal. You've mentioned one of these in a video a few years back and it definitely helped me make the decision to buy it. I replaced plenty of parts on mine when I got it used and I'm hoping it lasts me up to 300k+ miles too!
Those Chevy C/Ks with the 350 or even the 305 and the THM-400 transmission were really solid. What did a lot of them in was rust. If someone could keep theirs from rusting out they could last a long time.
It was a good platform. It was a rear wheel drive crossover. Hard to come by nowadays unless you’re willing to buy bmw or Mercedes. I have a trailblazer, it’s a gas guzzler, and had to replace the water pumps a couple of times and motor mounts, but other than that it still runs like a sewing machine at 208k miles.
This is my vehicle. I’ve owned it since 2004. Only had to do small repairs to the engine- a couple of coil packs, the stupid fan clutch, vvt solenoid, and motor mounts. Used Castrol 10w-30 and Lucas oil and only changed oil when the system light came on. The front end is junk in these and I’ve replaced those components several times because I can’t stand any noises or vibrations. That’s about all. Never done anything to the tranny other than had replace the coolant lines. It’s shifted like that for years, but it’s no big deal. I actually had the ecm reprogrammed a few years ago and it shifted much better. It also had a ton of power! Felt like a V8. I had them put it back to factory after I sold my camper . I will probably have it programmed again once I solve this evap issue. I want to fix that evap so the light will go off- that way I’ll know if it has any other issues. Won’t know if something else is wrong if the light is already on. I’m also OCD, so it has to be fixed. Yes, that would make me a little crazy (waving my hands all around). I’ll let ya’ll know what the leak is when I get around to dropping the tank. This has been the best running vehicle I’ve ever owned. I just want to see how many miles ‘ol red will go before it finally dies. I sure wouldn’t buy a newer GM vehicle. We bought a 2014 Buick Encore and it’s a POS!
My 4.2 makes alot of ticking noises,165,000 miles. Probably neglected by several previous owners. What symptoms showed when the vvt needed replacement?
I had a code like that. No visible leaks, no gas smell. I live where it had to be fixed to renew license. Did not have a smoke machine. So I started guessing. Replaced the purge valve $35 (that was not the problem), replaced the gas cap $20 (that was not the problem), The fuel filler pipe looked really rusty (like a rusty exhaust pipe) so replaced it too $100 (that was the problem). The fuel filler pipe had many pin holes in the lower half. Also had some big rust holes where mounted against the body (that you could not see until the pipe was off the car). To see the pin holes you stand in sunlight and look inside the pipe to see the light beams inside the pipe. I was glad I fixed the fuel filler pipe, it was so corroded it was dangerous and would only have gotten worse over time. Yes, I live in the rust belt. Prices shown are for the part only. Hope this helps somebody.
I have an 02 gmc envoy 4.2 liter and have 356k and it's still going strong. Yes I had to replace all the suspension parts, but what do you expect living up here in the northern Minnesota rust belt. All I own is gmc vehicles 02,03,05 and a 2012. Love em all. The rest of my neighbors own ford's, dodges, chevys and they are always broken down.
My dad's 1976 monte carlo sitting at 371k miles on the stock 350 still going my dad also got a GMC Envoy around 200k miles motor blew within 5k miles of driving it and the transmission went out before we got at 170k my experience the 4.3 vortech was way more reliable the the 4.2 but the best is a 350 Chevy motor most reliable engine ever made by chevy
I have always been a GM fan... every Chevy I've owned has been great! Until....my 2018 Colorado. It hasn't let me down yet, but the transmission isn't great, the rocker guard coating is chipping, my infotainment system is extremely glitchy...just lots of little things. Now that the warranty is up, I worry about the longevity of it. It only has 23,000 miles on it.
My first 3 trucks were f150 with the 300 six in them. 1 3speed manual, 1 5 speed manual and 1 automatic. I mowed more grass, hauled more mulch and brush and dirt and rocks and bikes and 4 wheelers than I can shake a stick at. I wrecked the 1st truck but regret getting rid of the other 2 everyday. Straight six is the way to go in my opinion. They don't want them to last I believe Scotty is right. Love this channel.
Just bought a 2003 Oldsmobile Bravada (aka the uglier trailblazer) with the 4.2 I6 and it’s been wonderful and dare I say - more fun to drive than the newer cars.
I have this same vehicle in the midwest and it has 330k miles and same situation but frame rusted and I still plan to fix it because it runs so well and no oil burn and still gets 21 miles per gallon.
We've had 2 Trailblazers with the i6. They were both fantastic vehicles & that straight 6 is torquey. Always good to pull the 17 ft fishing boat. The worst part was on the 4x4 ones, the front differential was inside the oil pan. That's why they hold 7 quarts of oil. It was a pain if needed to replace it.
When I was a kid my local bus company had quite a number on White Super Power buses that were fitted with a 5 litre six cylinder petrol engine. The thing I remember most was the smooth power delivery and the huge intake roar.
I used to have a 07 GMC Envoy with that 4.2L i6 engine and 4x4 and I loved that truck and easy to maintain until it was totaled. I bought mine with for $7k 132k miles and it got totaled at 250k mi and ran practically trouble free until the accident.
I have both 2001 and a 2002 Chevy Express 3500 extended vans. Both motors gave up at right around 240K, put new rebuilds in both and Ill have them another 20 years. Tranny's last about 250-300K usually and the AC never break. Best vans ever. One for fishing, kayak fits right in rhe back. The other for work.
The TB was a full-frane suv and the six cylinder engine was exceptional. The only dumb thing the engineers did was to run the front drive gear through the engine oil pan. Bad bad decision.
Toyota just had a name. Nissan sentra stanza. Were fantastic high miles 130mph. 200,000 34mpg. Pontiac 2.3 34mpg 200,000 miles 80mph all day. Iridium plugs dont wear out its the resistance that reduces change them at 90 to 100. Thousand miles.
I have a 21 RST Tahoe with the 5.3l engine and it’s had one transmission/ rear diff issue after another. After new torque converter was put in, rear diff fluid replaced, still having issues. Filed lemon law and GM is replacing it, now I wait 3 months for the new one to be manufactured and delivered. Huge pain in the butt
Hey Scotty... Cant seem to find a video or answer... Does the 2016 Buick have an access panel for the fuel pump or is it a tank drop job? Stumped in HTwn. Thanks for all your great honesty & videos... Stay healthy & strong...
My 1998 Buick LeSabre has 217,000 miles on it. 85,000 of them are California miles, the rest Minnesota miles. The 3.8 L V-6 and tranny still work great. There is no rust on it and still has the original exhaust system. The car is not garaged in the winter.
GM wants repeat customers that why they discontinued the models. Especially the original vehicle owners. Today's replacement parts for that models are discontinued so the service dept. can markup their parts and labor costs. On a unrelated note. How can I get your schedule specialist to reserve a service appointment fir your work?
It is kinda sad that GM wants to go on strike, hell the people in charge may just say the hell with it and move the rest to another country. 90 percent of it is shipped out already, time to re tool if it already has not started. Fenders, doors hoods trunks glass made in mexico with an american MSRP price tag in the window. Shipped directly to the dealer of your choice.
Yeah.. Those poor GM workers just need to suck up more trickle down crap, and keep VOTING for their masters then HOPE for CHANGE like well-trained law abiding 🐑 🐑.. 😂😂
I don't think I've heard him use the word "dated." I don't trust people who talk about things being "dated." They're like people who wear circular eyeglasses in bright colors.
I bought a new malibu and have been very impressed after 10k miles. I think i can easily get 200k miles because i will change oil every 5k and cvt fluid around 30k ....20k otd with rebates, gm card , supplier discount

On another note: I have an 02 S10 pickup with the 2.2L inline 4, rock solid engine, had to rebuild the tranny around 140K,but that was a no brainer even though it cost more than the truck was worth it will still be running long after I die!
Smoke coming out while he's talking. 😂
Right 🤣🤣
I love my Chevrolet Trailblazer 2003 that's a beast handles well love driving my truck i did look at the new 2023 or 2024 chevrolet trailblazer but that crap don't compare to my original trailblazer sure tech & everything is fancy but my truck gon last longer then that new trailblazer plus i love the original look to the trailblazer looks angry & just a beautiful truck i wish chevy kept the look and just added the ' new features ' now a days cars have & kept the real engines & transmissions that would of been great but now it looks like either a camero and a traverse or equinox made love & gave birth to new trailblazer lol anyway new cars now are so much different then the old days i miss checking my engines & transmission fluids now everything is bring to mechanic for them to look under this or that.
I love how he's talking about if you see smoke or there's no pressure that there's a leak and then smoke from the machine comes flying out of the valve cover behind him 😂
Theatrics?
I miss the straight 6's! Those were solid smooth running engines
My 04 Trailblazer had the same problem. Noisy water pump. Didn't leak. Drove me nuts. Had it fixed though.
My dad has an 05 envoy. The paint looks great. For some reason the paint on those envoys always look good
What kind of mpg do you get? 🤔 I've heard stories of 12 mpg.
@@lanesworld4000 I get 12. I put a leveling kit and bigger tires. I was getting 15 beforehand
Back in the day, GM should've replace the ancient 4.3 Vortec V-6 with the Vortec 4200 on the Silverado
Thanks Scotty. I’ve had 2 trailblazers. Best trucks I’ve ever owned hands down.
Scotty is finally having fun driving a chevy😂
First time for everything 😂
Wasn’t he just in a Chevy Impala that was at 378k miles running perfectly? Lol
Not really, he'd rather have the problems and make money
Those Chevy C/Ks with the 350 or even the 305 and the THM-400 transmission were really solid. What did a lot of them in was rust. If someone could keep theirs from rusting out they could last a long time.
Screwing 1/8" plywood on the body over the rust holes could help.
I have one of the GMC Envoy with the vortex engine. Runs smoothly. Great vehicle. Just a gas guzzler. Can’t get more than 15 mpg.
What's your gear ratio? I'd get low to middle twenties, generally, with my 2002 TrailBlazer LTZ with the 4.2. Sometimes middle to high twenties.
@@brianwesley28
What tires did you use? I get 12 with grippy tires
@@Commenter_42 ATR.
The owner really cares for his car.
I own a 2002 Chevy Astro with the vortech V-6. The engine still runs good at 280,000 miles.
Unfortunately, the county and cities in Northern VA (near DC) do require emission inspections every 2 years
The Chevy Trailblazer / GMC Envoy platform of the 2000's was so good, naturally GM had to stop making it. That's what GM does
It was a good platform.
2005 trailblazer here,mine runs good..ok on gas.218,000 miles,i hope it runs longer.thanks Scotty
No stupid beauty cover to throw away this time!😂
😅😅
I just bought a used 2003 Chevy express (van) for $4000 off craigslist. Runs like a top at 160k miles. What are your thoughts? Good? Bad? Anybody?
My dad's 1976 monte carlo sitting at 371k miles on the stock 350 still going my dad also got a GMC Envoy around 200k miles motor blew within 5k miles of driving it and the transmission went out before we got at 170k my experience the 4.3 vortech was way more reliable the the 4.2 but the best is a 350 Chevy motor most reliable engine ever made by chevy
Worked 1 summer in 70s in junkyard ANY THING THAT CAME IN WITH A 350
STANDING ORDER PULL ENGINE REGARDLESS OF REST OF VEHICLE
I have always been a GM fan... every Chevy I've owned has been great! Until....my 2018 Colorado. It hasn't let me down yet, but the transmission isn't great, the rocker guard coating is chipping, my infotainment system is extremely glitchy...just lots of little things. Now that the warranty is up, I worry about the longevity of it. It only has 23,000 miles on it.
That vehicle may have been assembled in Moraine Ohio, a suburb of Dayton. The plant is closed now though...............
The GM stock holders demanded that their vehicles don`t last past 150k.
Scotty I have a 2004 Chevy trailblazer LS and it has 160000 miles on it and the only thing that doesn't work is the AC runs great 👍
I have a 2006 trailblazer with 250,000 miles and it runs great with crappy dash components but are easy to change out
When I was a kid my local bus company had quite a number on White Super Power buses that were fitted with a 5 litre six cylinder petrol engine. The thing I remember most was the smooth power delivery and the huge intake roar.
Hats off to the guy who drove and maintained it. That’s what I’m doing to probably my last car.
Later models like 2007 made 291 HP, I was looking for a trailblazer with that engine.😁
My first truck was a 1968 Chevy with a straight-6. I loved that old truck.
If I lived in a place where I had to fix the evap leak, I possibly try some type of sealer before I'd buy a new gas tank
Got a 2004 Trailblazer. Runs great. Rust will get it before it finally quits.
I used to drive a Chevy caprice 1989 in 2004 as taxi that has 375000 miles with 0 problems.
It sad to see the quality and reliability is going down
i have an 07 Pontiac G6 with 154,000 miles and it still does 0-60 in 7 secs! it’s been reliable and doesn’t burn any oil
I really liked the trailblazer and envoy when they were introduced in 2002. The 4.2 and 3.8 were excellent engines that gm discontinued.
I remember GMs sucked then too. What if this is just one of the “lucky” ones that made it, so it gives the impression they were all good back then?
What do you think about the auto workers strike?
Had a trailblazer myself and my only regret is not keeping it ! My audio system sounded great in it too. If you have one keep it
Straight six is probably one of the best engines made. Perfectly balanced 👌
Cummins 5.9 here.
Chevs had bad electrical wiring. Tail light probs starter wiring probs.. etc etc. But great engine and transmmissions
I love my 2008 chevy trailblazer with the 4.2 inline 6 226k don't burn no oil and it just keep going what a beast
Being a geezer of Scotty's vintage I can assure that there are no bad cars only irresponsible owners. We reap what we sow.
The Atlas was fantastic!
I had an 02 Trailblazer. I had nothing but problems with it, especially electrical.
I wish I lived next door to you. Know where I’d take my car. Thanks Scotty!
In some GMs (my 2014 Terrain) the remote start won't work if an engine code is active. That's one reason the customer may want in cleared.
I had a 2007 with 4.2 liter 6 cyl. Made it 225,000 miles, then burning oil
Hey Scotty... Cant seem to find a video or answer... Does the 2016 Buick have an access panel for the fuel pump or is it a tank drop job? Stumped in HTwn.
Thanks for all your great honesty & videos...
Stay healthy & strong...
In-line sixes are the best, I’ve owned several in old jeeps and Chevy pickups. Smooth running, torquey and last forever
Yes, GM quality went downhill after the 2009 bankruptcy. Maybe they made too many cuts when trying to reduce manufacturing costs
Maybe Mary Barra was installed as Obama's sabotage. He hates America and everything it stands for.
Just bought a 07 Envoy 4200 straight 6💯
I just got rid of my 2009 trailblazer. It had 225,000 on the clock. Kinda regretting it. 😢
Gauge clusters only problem I had with mine
My 1998 Buick LeSabre has 217,000 miles on it. 85,000 of them are California miles, the rest Minnesota miles. The 3.8 L V-6 and tranny still work great. There is no rust on it and still has the original exhaust system. The car is not garaged in the winter.
Keeping a car in a garage or not in a garage makes little difference.
Me thinks that in Minnesota thou dost not livest.@@tommak6516
GM wants repeat customers that why they discontinued the models. Especially the original vehicle owners. Today's replacement parts for that models are discontinued so the service dept. can markup their parts and labor costs. On a unrelated note. How can I get your schedule specialist to reserve a service appointment fir your work?
My 06 suburban 285k 5.3
Runs strong no problems.
Best vehicle ever 😊
2:44 I found the leak!
I live up North…I’ve never had to do the emissions test and I drive vehicle made before the 2000’s
Vehicles
Ill never sell my 99 5.3 Silverado truck.
270,000 miles, no oil burning, no leaks.
The auto workers are on strike again Scotty. 😎👌👍
Not a big deal, easy fix. It’s great vehicle.
I have a 2008 trailblazer with over 200k the only thing I do not like about it is gas mileage.
I remember the Ext verson was more of a S10 Suburban.
Scotty loves the older cars that last so long. No need for fragile new technology.
I will only buy a vehicle that scottie recommends 😊😊😊
