The funny thing is while there were other rights they wanted beyond slavery, but those were also bad ideas. Like being a confederacy, which is just a terrible form of government all around. And they really just didn't want to pay federal taxes. So even if you do hear their whole argument out it was still all awful.

State's right to: leave the Union.
That meme only works on racist people (which is admittedly the target, so good meme)
But that doesn't make Abe's bloody war against his own country justified.
No slaves were freed under Abe Lincoln, the north was just as racist as the south. The true motivation was simply consolidation of power. In case you thought it was the ghost of the confederates who blocked civil rights all the way till the 1960s. I assure you, admitting blacks were human beings was farther than Abe or the majority of Northern citizens were comfortable with. It only became fashionable after the fact. And it took A LONG time for blacks to gain even limited rights.
For the entire duration of the war, while all the poor racist white people killing each other over the fate of slaves they couldn't afford to own, the Northern States could have voted in any policy they wanted: Because the South wasn't physically there to reject the proposal. Despite the entire opposition party being non-existent, neither Abe nor his party of closeted Wigs did a damn thing to promote the condition of black people. When a token gesture was made to that end, the progressively minded norther citizens would riot in the street at the mere suggestion "N*****s" were human beings.
In Europe, the solution was much easier and bloodless. Just buy out the plantation owners, and phase it out. Without the financial incentive to own slaves, the issue was reduced to simply a matter of free association. You don't need to like black people, you just can't own slaves. Since hardly anyone could afford to own slaves anyway, this wasn't a huge leap for Europeans. And they managed to do it long before the United States. But that's assuming the war was just about slavery. Truth is, even if Abe had taken the European Strategy, there'd still have been a war regardless, because the war wasn't about slavery. It was about Federal Authority. Slavery was used as an excuse after the fact.
Also note, that blacks weren't the only people to live as slaves. The rules varied from race to race, but Irishmen, women, children, orientals, and probably a few other minorities I'm forgetting were regularly employed as indentured servants, and out at sea, anything goes. Ending slavery was only one front on a war against labor abuse of all sorts. The Union did not have a principled position on any of these issues. And the proof is in records you've already seen: child labor, women's rights, debt prisons, convict leasing, and other forms of extortion discussed all the way into the early 1900s. Not only did Abe do nothing, his party did nothing. In fact during the reconstruction years the entire nation, north and south regressed slightly in the opposite direction. Far from the progressive march toward freedom you were likely told about, where each new victory stood on the one before it. No, it was 2 steps forward 1 step back. The abolitionists and civil rights activists were rebuffed by Democrats and Republicans alike every step of the way, only making minor inroads. Then once a milestone is reached, everyone pretends they were on the winning side from the start. Like Obama saying he is against gay marriage... until he changed his mind.
Just like England and France didn't give a fuck about Poland, they just didn't want the Germans to build an Empire and threaten their Imperial ambitions. Proven by the fact they gave the Soviet Union the entirety of Poland by war's end. Poland being the reason they declared war on Germany in 1939. This despite the Soviets having invaded Poland alongside the Germans in 1939, and splitting the country with the Nazis. The Holocaust wasn't discovered until the end of the war, and had nothing to do with the "Allies" decision to go to war. It was entirely self serving on their part. This is why you see Ukrainian and other Slavic nationalists wear Nazi symbols. Slavs remember the Nazis as the only people in Europe to actually fight back against the Russian expansion. As such, Slavic people remember the Nazis more fondly after spending the last 50 years under the crushing tyranny of the USSR. The SS was full of foreign volunteers who's primary motivation was resisting the spread of Bolshevik brand Communism. Even a small contingent of Frenchmen of all things, fighting with distinction in Berlin till the bitter end. Antisemitism was not a Nazi invention, and certainly it had alot of sympathy among the peoples of Europe, but the chief motivation for a minor majority of the people who fought for the Germans, was resisting the Russians.
These are the nuances they don't teach you in school, because they blur the lines between right and wrong. Good people sometimes do bad things, and bad people can have the best of intentions. The distinction between the two is arbitrary, and this leads to a wide variety of interpretations, leading to different priorities, leading to conflicting opinions, and ultimately to conflict itself as seen in wars all over the world stretching back to the beginning of history. But you don't need to know that, just consume product and vote for current thing.
Germany=Bad/Russia=Good Until the circumstances are inverted and suddenly we're told Germans are Good, and Russia is bad. That's how you are expected to view things. Any information that might confuse or dissuade you from marching lock step with the state is "dangerous" information.
Owning Confederates is fun and all, but you should take a hard look at your heroes and realize you're gaslighting yourself about your own history. This type of revisionist BS happens every day. Realizing the grass was never greener brings you closer to the people who came before you, and comes with the knowledge that you've been lied to your whole life, and will continue to be mislead for as long as you chose to follow along. There's nothing that can be done about the past. But you can always learn more from it as long as you are willing to admit you need to learn more. Don't take my word for it, take a critical look at the men who's statues we venerate. There's more to their story than what's written on the plaque.

as much as i do agree w/ the sentiment, the more accurate description is that the Republicans didn't go far enough. the radicals were held back by the centrists (tell me something I don't know) and Reconstruction was "foiled" by the Dixiecrats (read: postponed). While this is in no means the case across the board -- Maryland, for instance, while being a slave state, benefitted massively from Reconstruction, going from a nominally "neutral" state to a pretty firm progressive foothold in the Black metropolis that was (and is) Baltimore -- it is pretty largely the case that radical reconstructionism was undermined in the South by moderates and centrists. Unfortunately, the west wing was right when they said Lincoln was a "liberal Republican," and his sympathetic racial politics were purely pragmatic, rather than ethically motivated, and that politics echoed all throughout the republican party.

Well, most of the recent news is pretty grim stuff from a civil rights perspective, especially in North America, so I had to take a break to listen to this song on repeat while I build a decent Firestarter (fast little humanoid mech with ALL THE FLAMETHROWERS, generally plus an assortment of small energy weapons and machine guns).
With the "Sherman" camouflage pattern, in various shades of blue, of course. I think the actual pattern, with its blotches and star roundels, references American tank markings circa WWII, but shush. It's still a reference if it's an indirect one.

Something I’ve never understood is why Sherman is often heralded as the savior in the civil war especially in all these anti confederacy memes but Grant was the man that made what Sherman do possible. Without all the work he’d done earlier in the war destroying the rail network and opening up the Mississippi then Sherman wouldn’t have had the chance to run a muck in Georgia. Grants the man who got the job done even when everyone doubted him due to heavy casualties and some other more or less hearsay regarding his ability. Not to say Sherman wasn’t important, Sherman and Grant were close friends and they trusted each other. Grant could count on Sherman and he did several times. Just always seemed weird to me.
