I love JJJ, I study this martial art also and gotta say it's so much fun. I would recommend anyone take it up. Most of the comments of negativity are from folk who have never went near a gym or dojo in their life. Any martial art will make you humble n curb your ego I promise. It's great for your entire body and your mind. What I love about JJ is the little wrist n elbow locks which do work in the real world. There are so many facets of the JJ diamond from throwing to submissions to ground work. It's a complete system IMO but I respect n love all martial arts. There all fun and effective in their own way.
As a practioner of both I can say this both are good in their own right. Self defense is important but the feeling you get from rolling newaza which is Bjj amazing. Being able to control a live person who is fighting back. In my opinion you need both!
I did Aikido in my youth for many years and a lot of these moves look similar to some I used to practice. Aikido was developed by a Samurai from Jujutsu and also Kenjutsu.
THIS IS THE REAL JIU JITSU Recently a BJJ practitioner, a bouncer went to the floor from a scuffle at the door. His attacker's girlfriend kept kicking him while he wrestle with his opponent. She kicked him freely until unconscious due to the grappling senario where he could not stand up and defend himself against 2. LESSON HERE Going to the floor is ludicrous in a street scenario.
I am a Japanese and grew up in japan. My old brother played Jyuudou and he used use me to practice what he learned that day and I disliked it. 😅 I’ve watched him play with his team mates and I used to be amazed. I did Kendou but wish I did karate or Aikidou. I now believe that all girls should have Aikido class from kindergarten to high school. We could avoid many scary experiences.

I really admire all martial art styles. There is something of value in them all. And the discipline it takes to continue studying it for years is admirable. I do Wado Ryu which is derivative of Shotokan and Jujitsu. I like the blend. I don't respect firearms however. Almost any fool can pull a trigger...
It's some of both. Jujutsu focus on techniques and individual moves, attacks against standing and grounded opponents, armed vs. unarmed, and even a bit of weapons training. Exactly what you get and how much emphasis is placed on each aspect depends on what school of Jujutsu you study. However, most have relatively equal emphasis on the first three.
And still People quickly talk shit about aikido but 90% what I saw here, we do in aikido too. But then it is bs but when you say jiu jutsu then Its all good. 😂

I highly recommend to you to start training now. Just because it happened once doesn't mean it wont happen again. It's a dangerous world we live in unfortunately. I recommend Muay Thai as well as some Traditional Ju-Jitsu. Both those arts combined have saved my life/ass a countless number of times. I've also done Western Boxing my entire life and all 3 are a great combination.
true. It is about finishing the fight, but also about getting close to the person as fast as possible so their techniques are less effective. We (I am a jujutsuka) use the persons force against them while using the least energy possible

No, it's actually as the uploader said: Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu. It is the style that Aikido pivots on, but this is mostly a focus on the Jujutsu aspects (which has had an impact on Jujutsu). Although their gis and the fact that they're demonstrating (not executing) the techniques hide this detail, these require more strength than Aikido uses. And a few of these techniques don't flow as well as Aikido, thus the need for the additional strength.
This is a very good display of jujitsu techniques performed as kata. Well done guys I have used bastardised versions of many of the techniques shown in this video .over the past 11 years of working in prisons . Of course reality is not like this .it isn't meant to be it is a display . A very good one at that.
Ye, one of the basic premises behind JJJ and standing jointlocks/submissions is the 2-on-1 (your 2 hands against the opponent's 1). That being said, the other guy can do the same and use his other hand to brace the attacked hand. This small detail is often overlooked. This is why things like the classic wristlock are harder to do than initially meets the eye.
hmm.. as far as i observed. Bjj and JapJJ has different aspects. Majorly BJJ is for grappling while JapJJ focus on insta-kill techniques, it may look like they're the same. but BJJ is like a martial arts for preserving the life of your enemy without causing too much damage and just to make them surrender by depleting all of their stamina but it depends on the user. JapJJ is more darker i mean dangerous art if used wrongly their techniques really focus on breaking bones, blinding the eyes, slashing the necks and eventually killing their opponents. that is why BJJ is much preferable in MMA. but if you prefer the dark side then choose JapJJ. so which one would you pick? BJJ or JapJJ
I would prefer Japanese Jujutsu!It would be a better choice since fighting on the street ground without mats can be very painful.I like JapJJ as an art because it is a hybrid art and it focuses on standing and a little bit on the ground.
In JJJ, we have "options". Use what we need, for the appropriate situation. It HAS "deadly" options, but it's up to the individual practicioner to discern...in a self defense/life threatening situation, whether to kill in defence, maim(break, dislocate), or simply put to sleep and run away. Note too, that we have throws(which birthed Judo) that can sometimes end a threat instantly, knocking the wind out of an attacker or breaking their ribs. Me practicing JJJ doesn't make me "dark" anymore than law enforcement having a side arm(which is to maim or kill). It's the individual intent. Me? I am a husband and father of 3 children whom I would lay my life down to protect, and of a SURETY - I hope I NEVER have to use what I know. If I ever do, I hope the attacker peacefully complies, or that I'd only have to put someone asleep that a loved one or myself could get to safety. That's just GROUND stuff. Honestly, if you come up to me or my family with a knife drawn or a gun in our face, then you automatically forfeit your life. That's not me being "dark", that's me being papa bear and you(the attacker) with a death wish. Overall, remember that BJJ came out of Judo with the INTENT of self defense. It was not intended for sport in the beginning. It was about the small or weak individual still being able to take on a larger opponent. Helio Gracie couldn't "throw" well due to weakness - so he took the fight to the ground.

@Diogo Garcia Ive ben training in Juijitsu for almost 7 years. You do have more experience then me but in my school we do have brutal techniques but we still apply the art to our techniques so its balanced out. Some of these techniques i liked and im going to show my school these.
it may work, obviously it works, but holy shit it looks difficult to learn, its just an inefficient way of learning to take someone down. its an outdated system is what it is. you'd learn modern take-down techniques in half the time and get similar results against the average joe. if one guy studies wrestling and judo for a year and the other studies this, the former will very highly likely win the fight. it's an inefficient learning curve.
@parlachinchilla This is Japanese Jujutsu. Jiu Jitsu is a western mispelling of the word, which is still used primarily in Brazil. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is really Judo ne waza.
From what I've read, it sounds like the original Jujutsu/Jujitsu is basically a military combat system. This would make it very different from a lot of what's called "martial arts". I've long been told that many martial arts are virtually useless in actual self-defense situations.

I am 7th dan w/39 yrs practioner 29 yrs Teacher of JJ so I do feel somewhat qualified in my pts in 0:54 I am concerned to challenge a Tsuki knife thrust with a punch leaving your femoral artery very vulnerable to quick slash. If the punch was countered by a simple cross block from the Left hand. As we know the head is most defended body part. Overall good tech. shihonage, Iriminage omote, ikkyo. Nice execution.
@ladyDiix Consider jujutsu the parent martial art of every other art from japan. The texts contain everything. Karate, hapkido, aikido, you name it. However, No one person could master all it's aspects, So Schools have to pick something and focus on it. Practical Judo (as opposed to competition Judo) pretty much covers all of jujutsu, but focuses on the most efficient maneuvers. Brazilian jujitsu is basically a school that focuses on the grappling aspect of judo, which is the most practical

Did Aikido for 4 years, 20 years ago. But funny in this demonstrations I see mostly familiar techniques: Irimi-nage, ikkyo, Shihō-nage and others, super similiar to Aikido, just without the bullshit and more straight to the point. Nice.
@iplaysax I already know about Mitsuyo Maeda, and he originally called Judo by the name "Kano Jiu Jitsu"(after Judo founder Jigoro Kano) when he came to Brazil in order to avoid confusion, understanding that westerners were not famliar with the name Judo at the time. I only used the term Japanese jujutsu to specify what was in this vid, since many youtubers automatically think BJJ. Yes, there are several Ryu of Jujutsu(Hontai Yoshin Ryu, Takenouchi Ryu, Daito Ryu, Tenjin Shinyo Ryu, etc.)
@jaraman9 Thanks.:) I know that BJJ is mainly Judo ne-waza(hence old school Judoka referring to it as "Basically Just Judo") due to Helio Gracie being too sick and weak as a boy to learn Judo's standing techniques as taught to older brother Carlos by Mitsuo Maeda. Helio focused on ne-waza, as it was easier for him to learn. And "Jitsu" does have a meaning. It's a term used in Japanese shiatsu therapy for a fullness or excess of energy in a part of the body, while "Kyo" is a lack of said energy.
@jin54363 because jujutsu/jiu jitsu is really a japanese name for a martial art style expressed by 2 kanji characters, so really for westerners the pronounciation is what counts. usually jujutsu/jujitsu would refer to the japanese style, and jiu jitsu to the brazilian derivative.
@Roikonen94 and as long as people have fun in the systems they practise in there is not any "oh this sport is better than that" my point was not to declare that Taekwondo cannot be used in selfdefense; just that Jujutsu and Taekwondo do have great differences because Jujutsu is more used as a selfdefense than Taekwondo while Taekwondo usually is focused on the competition (well of course it was a military system a long time ago, and it could be used just as that again).

As a karate black belt and instructor who has also trained a little in Jujitsu, I seriously worry that there are inexperienced people out there who will see this video and think most of these techniques might work. If you approach a knife or baseball bat attack in the ways demonstrated here...you will definitely get stabbed/seriously hurt/killed. Gliding to the side and trying to grab a moving knife hand (worse still, reaching over the knife to do so, as shown here) is madness. If you trained every day for 6 hours you might want to back yourself not to miss the arm or hand carrying the knife, but for most people, a bigger block, using a forearm for instance, is a far safer bet. Better still, turn and run. As for the overhead stick attack shown...are we really expected to believe that you can drift and subtly redirect, as shown, a stick used like that by someone who really means it?! Come off it. It would be funny if the consequences of people putting their faith in such nonsense weren't so serious.

Indeed. Although Jutsu I believe is the term for fighting, the spelling is just different area's of japan in the feudal times. The part before it I am taught is the style. Be it Ninjitsu, Jujitsu or otherwise. I wouldn't however say most Jujitsu is a sport though. If you did it fully in any fight the fight would be over in a few seconds. Like my Sensei says. If it comes to it in real life, don't bother being fancy. Snap something and get out of the situation immediately.

"Jujustu" is the correct Hepburn romanization, as the word "Ju" in Japanese means "soft" or "flexible" -- as in the Karate style Goju Ryu, which means "hard/soft style" -- and "Jutsu" means "art" or "skill." "Jiu-Jitsu" is how the word sounded to western ears before the correct spelling and pronounciation was established. There is already a Japanese word "Jitsu" which is a shiatsu term meaning a fullness or excess of energy in a certain spot on the body.
@Roikonen94 well; you can of course use tae kwon do for self-defense; but keep in mind: high kicks and the wide foot posture like they are widely teached for sport is just useless or lets say more dangerous in self defense than styles, that are taught for self defense (kicking is okay; but the lower you kick the faster the kick will hit the target; the wider you open your legs the more the testicles will say "hit me" to the opponent).
It doesn't really matter how you spell it, as they're both just different transliteration of the Japanese alphabet. The spelling with an i in it is more characteristic of the Portuguese pronunciation, and so it usually gets used to denote Brazilian styles, that's all. I agree with you though, people don't appreciate the distinction between the styles enough. They're so different.
@Jude30 not really because my grandpa was in the army he learned jujitsu and he says hes been attaked with knives many of times, and this works, he even showed me some techniques
I like the empty hands however the armed combat is lacking as with most traditional styles it doesn't compensate for realistic modern combat. I have yet to see someone (trained or not) attack and wait to be countered in such an obvious manner. However once unarmed the takedown and lock are very useful
OK, so I've done some weapons sparring (with sticks wrapped with pipe insulation, real strikes), and the time to close is immediately when Uke's hand goes up or back, you can't wait on the strike, he may fake it. Especially with a bat, axe handle etc. You have to get inside the arc, or get outside right away. That said, it's extremely difficult to defend a knife attack, almost nobody but extremely inexperienced people attack like that.

The deference in BJJ and Japanese Jujitsu is that Brazilian style is more ground base for sport and Japanese style is more for combat and self-defense. If I would chose either one I will chose Japanese Jujitsu because in a real fight taking the fight to the ground is a terrible ideal if your fighting more then one person.

@44excalibur I will have to add to that most brazilian jiu jitsu schools are really only judo ne waza however there is also a number of school that although brazilian, teach a lot of self defence. I train under a Relson Gracie black belt, and we train (stand up) self defence almost every class, and have the luxury to start rolling standing up and use a take down to start the rolling of. ps. I m not trolling I just thought you might appreciate some extra info on the subject :)

If I ever do, I hope the attacker peacefully complies, or that I'd only have to put someone asleep that a loved one or myself could get to safety. That's just GROUND stuff. Honestly, if you come up to me or my family with a knife drawn or a gun in our face, then you automatically forfeit your life. That's not me being "dark", that's me being papa bear and you(the attacker) with a death wish. Overall, remember that BJJ came out of Judo with the INTENT of self defense. It was not intended for sport in the beginning. It was about the small or weak individual still being able to take on a larger opponent. Helio Gracie couldn't "throw" well due to weakness - so he took the fight to the ground.

@Diogo Garcia Ive ben training in Juijitsu for almost 7 years. You do have more experience then me but in my school we do have brutal techniques but we still apply the art to our techniques so its balanced out. Some of these techniques i liked and im going to show my school these.
it may work, obviously it works, but holy shit it looks difficult to learn, its just an inefficient way of learning to take someone down. its an outdated system is what it is. you'd learn modern take-down techniques in half the time and get similar results against the average joe. if one guy studies wrestling and judo for a year and the other studies this, the former will very highly likely win the fight. it's an inefficient learning curve.

@parlachinchilla This is Japanese Jujutsu. Jiu Jitsu is a western mispelling of the word, which is still used primarily in Brazil. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is really Judo ne waza.
From what I've read, it sounds like the original Jujutsu/Jujitsu is basically a military combat system. This would make it very different from a lot of what's called "martial arts".
I've long been told that many martial arts are virtually useless in actual self-defense situations.

I am 7th dan w/39 yrs practioner 29 yrs Teacher of JJ so I do feel somewhat qualified in my pts in 0:54 I am concerned to challenge a Tsuki knife thrust with a punch leaving your femoral artery very vulnerable to quick slash. If the punch was countered by a simple cross block from the Left hand. As we know the head is most defended body part. Overall good tech. shihonage, Iriminage omote, ikkyo.

@ladyDiix Consider jujutsu the parent martial art of every other art from japan. The texts contain everything. Karate, hapkido, aikido, you name it. However, No one person could master all it's aspects, So Schools have to pick something and focus on it. Practical Judo (as opposed to competition Judo) pretty much covers all of jujutsu, but focuses on the most efficient maneuvers. Brazilian jujitsu is basically a school that focuses on the grappling aspect of judo, which is the most practical

Did Aikido for 4 years, 20 years ago. But funny in this demonstrations I see mostly familiar techniques: Irimi-nage, ikkyo, Shihō-nage and others, super similiar to Aikido, just without the bullshit and more straight to the point. Nice.
@Firzenmaker We use more like a boxing stance than horse stance. And we are taught low kicks quite extensively.

@iplaysax I already know about Mitsuyo Maeda, and he originally called Judo by the name "Kano Jiu Jitsu"(after Judo founder Jigoro Kano) when he came to Brazil in order to avoid confusion, understanding that westerners were not famliar with the name Judo at the time. I only used the term Japanese jujutsu to specify what was in this vid, since many youtubers automatically think BJJ. Yes, there are several Ryu of Jujutsu(Hontai Yoshin Ryu, Takenouchi Ryu, Daito Ryu, Tenjin Shinyo Ryu, etc.)
@jaraman9 Thanks.:) I know that BJJ is mainly Judo ne-waza(hence old school Judoka referring to it as "Basically Just Judo") due to Helio Gracie being too sick and weak as a boy to learn Judo's standing techniques as taught to older brother Carlos by Mitsuo Maeda. Helio focused on ne-waza, as it was easier for him to learn. And "Jitsu" does have a meaning. It's a term used in Japanese shiatsu therapy for a fullness or excess of energy in a part of the body, while "Kyo" is a lack of said energy.

@jin54363 because jujutsu/jiu jitsu is really a japanese name for a martial art style expressed by 2 kanji characters, so really for westerners the pronounciation is what counts. usually jujutsu/jujitsu would refer to the japanese style, and jiu jitsu to the brazilian derivative.

@Roikonen94 and as long as people have fun in the systems they practise in there is not any "oh this sport is better than that" my point was not to declare that Taekwondo cannot be used in selfdefense; just that Jujutsu and Taekwondo do have great differences because Jujutsu is more used as a selfdefense than Taekwondo while Taekwondo usually is focused on the competition (well of course it was a military system a long time ago, and it could be used just as that again).
Jujutsu worked well for the Samurai, it's still street effective in 2020

It just jujutsu the one the samurai used during the edo period in feudal Japan jujutsu is focused on grappling great for real life situations one on one I would use Aikido and Shotokan Karate
daito ryu is where Aikido comes from.

As a karate black belt and instructor who has also trained a little in Jujitsu, I seriously worry that there are inexperienced people out there who will see this video and think most of these techniques might work. If you approach a knife or baseball bat attack in the ways demonstrated here...you will definitely get stabbed/seriously hurt/killed.
Gliding to the side and trying to grab a moving knife hand (worse still, reaching over the knife to do so, as shown here) is madness.
If you trained every day for 6 hours you might want to back yourself not to miss the arm or hand carrying the knife, but for most people, a bigger block, using a forearm for instance, is a far safer bet.
Better still, turn and run.
As for the overhead stick attack shown...are we really expected to believe that you can drift and subtly redirect, as shown, a stick used like that by someone who really means it?! Come off it.
It would be funny if the consequences of people putting their faith in such nonsense weren't so serious.

Indeed. Although Jutsu I believe is the term for fighting, the spelling is just different area's of japan in the feudal times. The part before it I am taught is the style. Be it Ninjitsu, Jujitsu or otherwise.
I wouldn't however say most Jujitsu is a sport though. If you did it fully in any fight the fight would be over in a few seconds.

"Jujustu" is the correct Hepburn romanization, as the word "Ju" in Japanese means "soft" or "flexible" -- as in the Karate style Goju Ryu, which means "hard/soft style" -- and "Jutsu" means "art" or "skill." "Jiu-Jitsu" is how the word sounded to western ears before the correct spelling and pronounciation was established. There is already a Japanese word "Jitsu" which is a shiatsu term meaning a fullness or excess of energy in a certain spot on the body.

@Roikonen94 well; you can of course use tae kwon do for self-defense; but keep in mind: high kicks and the wide foot posture like they are widely teached for sport is just useless or lets say more dangerous in self defense than styles, that are taught for self defense (kicking is okay; but the lower you kick the faster the kick will hit the target; the wider you open your legs the more the testicles will say "hit me" to the opponent).
It doesn't really matter how you spell it, as they're both just different transliteration of the Japanese alphabet. The spelling with an i in it is more characteristic of the Portuguese pronunciation, and so it usually gets used to denote Brazilian styles, that's all.
I agree with you though, people don't appreciate the distinction between the styles enough. They're so different.

@Jude30 not really because my grandpa was in the army he learned jujitsu and he says hes been attaked with knives many of times, and this works, he even showed me some techniques
I like the empty hands however the armed combat is lacking as with most traditional styles it doesn't compensate for realistic modern combat. I have yet to see someone (trained or not) attack and wait to be countered in such an obvious manner. However once unarmed the takedown and lock are very useful

OK, so I've done some weapons sparring (with sticks wrapped with pipe insulation, real strikes), and the time to close is immediately when Uke's hand goes up or back, you can't wait on the strike, he may fake it. Especially with a bat, axe handle etc. You have to get inside the arc, or get outside right away.
That said, it's extremely difficult to defend a knife attack, almost nobody but extremely inexperienced people attack like that.

martial art is not a study of war, what you are refferring to is to fighting skill, martial arts, are made to create peace and not to be violent.
Bushido means 'way of the warrior', it is a moral code of attitudes, behavior and lifestyle in the case of jujutsu, specifically referring to the samurai warrior.. so aren't warriors supposed to be skilled in war on the battlefield? lol Jujutsu is a battlefield art, designed to kill, how is it not a study of war? war is violence. jujutsu is a martial art, is it not? it was used in war by the samurai

The deference in BJJ and Japanese Jujitsu is that Brazilian style is more ground base for sport and Japanese style is more for combat and self-defense.
If I would chose either one I will chose Japanese Jujitsu because in a real fight taking the fight to the ground is a terrible ideal if your fighting more then one person.

jujutsu and jiu jitsu are different martial arts. Jujutsu is the traditional way of judo. Jujutsu and kenjutsu are partner martial arts that is used in sengoku era.

@44excalibur I will have to add to that most brazilian jiu jitsu schools are really only judo ne waza however there is also a number of school that although brazilian, teach a lot of self defence. I train under a Relson Gracie black belt, and we train (stand up) self defence almost every class, and have the luxury to start rolling standing up and use a take down to start the rolling of. ps. I m not trolling I just thought you might appreciate some extra info on the subject :)
