Game Description:
Fear & Hunger is a horror dungeon crawler set in the dark and hopeless dungeons of fear and hunger. Four misfortuned adventurers dwell deeper and deeper to the darkness and uncover the secrets this ancient fortress holds inside. The fortress works as an ancient nexus for different planes of existence. The depths are in an eternal turmoil as both old and new gods struggle for power, it’s up to the players to choose their position and stance in all of this.
The game is a hybrid of survival horror and dungeon crawler genres with its influences ranging from Silent Hill to Nethack. There are roguelike elements to the game as well as a heavy foundation of a j-RPG. Fear & Hunger is heavy on atmosphere and ruthless in its difficulty.
FEATURES
Oppressive and relentless atmosphere
4 different character classes and many additional characters to recruit
Unforgiving and unique gameplay
Randomized elements to keep the game fresh with subsequent playthroughs
Turn-based Strategic Dismember Combat System
Graphical art style mixing pixel art with digital painting
Original ambient soundtrack creating the dreary mood
The world of Fear & Hunger is VERY dark. THE GAME IS MEANT ONLY FOR MATURE AUDIENCES! Extreme violence and gore are everyday sights in the dungeons and death is one of the easier ways to go in the game. The game has drug and substance abuse, heavy themes ranging from self-mutilation to sexual violence. None of the themes are taken lightly however. They are all part of the world building and there to create the unique atmosphere where the game measures just how far the player is willing to go in order to survive.
Parts of the dungeon layout, events, loot and enemy placements are randomized with few different variations to keep things fresh with subsequent playthroughs. The game is designed with the classic trial and error formula, so you can expect to start the game over and over again. But as long as you learn from your mistakes, you can quickly find yourself at the deeper levels of the dungeon.
The combat in Fear & Hunger is turn-based akin to classic role-playing games, but with a twist of it’s own. You can target individual limbs of your enemies to dismember them strategically and thus maximize your chances for survival. However, just the same, enemies can also cut off the arms and the legs of your playable characters if you are not careful. You need to prepare well for every encounter if you wish to stay alive. But don’t forget that running away from threats is often the best solution as well. There are many ways for survival in Fear & Hunger - You can find better equipment, learn different blood and love magic, fuse characters into each other, pray different gods, talk your way out of battles, meet new party members, snipe enemies from distance, use traps to disable them… and so on. The Idea is to use what you got at your disposal and be creative with it.

Can I get the uncensored version of that raccoon? >///>
Also is the patreon version full and uncensored? Cause if so I'll pay for that.
Content warning: Literally everything.
lookit those weiners
And the kitchen sink
Literally the most factual comment I’ve ever seen. Absolutely ZERO misinformation. EVERYTHING IN THIS GAME IS A CONTENT WARNING
@@SushiTrap313 yes there’s huge stingers everywhere
i almost screamed out loud when i saw that toaster's censor bar had a PA piercing

lmao, getting two really good books then immediately jumping in the shit pit is pure blind F&H experience
That and the "everything does 50% more dmg to you" debuff at 14:08. Lmao.
"Did we get fucked by the RNG?" *is immediately attacked by ravenous hounds*
Omg i readed this comment perfectly when he said that and the dogs attacked him 😂😂
53:30 "Let's see if he'll chase us into the toilet."
Immediately stops chasing after hearing that.
Oh yes, my appendage is pulsating for this playthrough!
stinger activation?
That's a normal human thing to say.
@@jann_07in a context of this game. It's tame as shit 🥹
@@Helikite fair enough
This sentence made my face contort in a way it never has before, and not in the good way.
I love the book at the beginning “All my high morals mean nothing, what I’ve had to do to survive”. And it right where he just entered, so imagine how much worse it gets.
As someone who has known about this thing for years, this sudden surge in popularity has been interesting.
Pathologic is having one as well.
I thought this would happen when mandalorian Gaming did a video on pathological but the time frame of his release doesn't add up. I guess the game being Finnish helps.
For me it was super eyepatch wolf that got me into it
Thanks for reminding me that berserk exists. Now I can go back to contemplating if I wanna read it again, even though it will never be finished.
berserk is very close to being wrapped up, lol. Miura's team has been publishing chapters with expediency, and the content they've been putting out is excellent. It's very close to being done for good.
Do yourself a favour and read. It’s gonna be finished and it’s a worthwhile read. Very inspiring
A person that likes anime, manga and art should not go through life without seeing the Casca dream dive. I was a wreck of tears
just read it, it's a fun read
@@FlameHiddenCasca’s death is quite possibly the saddest death in mangas. She’ll be missed. Griffith is fucking satan incarnate
You’ll unlock a special type of trauma if you narrate this game in your Leo voice.
Intro is one of the most important parts of the game because it heavily affects your abilities. All choices are fixed but for 3 out of 4 characters one ability (very important one) is locked behind 2 choices.
I'm not sure if you were joking or not, but midnight sun is definitely a phenomenon that happens. Opposite of that is called a polar night.
And you were right: Miro Haverinen is a Finnish name, so this game was probably made by someone whose second language is English.
Someone called this a "good slav game" in the comments of a review of this game. The shitstorm was unimaginable lol.
But yeah midnight sun is a real thing and if a Finn made this game it would make sun that he includes it. There is evben a big festival around the midnight sun period in finnland. It's wild and on the same level as burning man imo.
Oh man the poop ending is my favorite ending so far, just like the broom closet ending from the Stanley Parable.
"Watch this be the worst character"
How truly, truly unfortunate that they were exactly right
really outlander's the worst?
@@sylis7158 Please refer to my man All-Bones if you wish to learn more
@@sylis7158definitely the hardest to start out with atleast, but the general ranking from best to worst goes mercenary, knight, dark priest, outlander.
not sure if theyre intentionally put in that exact order on the character screen or if it just happened to be haha
knight and mercenary are the best starters either way :D
@karolinaww -- well actually, dark priest might be the worst to start with as a beginner since you won't really know how to use his magic stuff
@@sokavisnu You wont really know how to use anything as a beginner, so all four suck at the beginning.
The "what'd you just call me?" bit about the Cuirass was pretty good
Clearly this is supposed to be something of a survival horror game but I feel like there is something extremely funny about there being a horrifying amalgamation of hundreds of human limbs and heads but when you walk up to it it just goes “Hey man, can you get me some food? I’m feeling kinda hungry.” Like of all the people in this game to act normal I was not expecting the living pile of human corpses. Everything seems to have lost its mind or gone feral but this abomination is fully in its faculties. It’s not even like “grr I’m gonna eat you!” You tear off one of its heads and it just goes “Dude, what the fuck?”
There's a part later on where you ask the New Gods three questions about any subject in the game, and for the human hydra they say that the guards in the prison who were starving completed the rite to become that thing... as a final "act of love". No clue what it means but it is fascinating
@@18skeltor They had a marriage of impeccable scale.
In the game, the Player and a Party Member can conduct a Marriage, a Sylvian ritual where the two participants make love and coalesce into a creature known as a Marriage, a physical combination of both participants into something physically stronger.
While some guards formed into normal Marriages, the Human Hydra is what happens when a full blown orgy occurs to form a Marriage.
@@donutlovingwerewolf8837 I learned about marriage after my comment but I never pieced it together that the Hydra must have been a result of that. Thanks for the reply! The dialogue when you fight it are the funniest in the game, up there with Dracula in Space Funeral.
always fun to watch someone start this brutal game. their first character was possibly the worst start you can get. No dash. NO good equipment. Absolutely blind. Hunted down by the hounds instantly, only to escape twice right into a guard... best way to experience it. At least at first until you learn. its really a game of trial and error.
Actually there is such a thing as a midnight sun. And scandinavia is one of the places where the sun shines at midnight during midsummer
So happy you played this! Hope you two enjoyed it
Getting the Dash option in the opening is almost vital. You just need to figure out which options to pick.
Cute pfp.
Love the Berserk referance ,,The band of the Hawk” - so fiting hahaha
Thank you for playing this game, watching others play through and seeing each persons unique play style and struggles is always refreshing and exciting.
18:20 "This nightmare has taken it is toll on me."
47:36 "You grab one of it is heads and rip it off with brute strength."
This game is full of typos since it was originally in another language. Don't worry about it too much or you won't enjoy the game lol
What thing in the left (shit pit)? Im freaked out thinking that they're seeing something i cant
D'arce the libral 🤣
Let me just give a small thank you that you not only went into this completely blind but also took a moment to say what you knew about the game before starting it. That's just a neat thing I appreciate when I watch a lets play for the reaction of the streamer. I'm excited what you will think about this indiscriminately aweful setting and all its lore.
2:00 minutes in and I'm only now seeing that ring on the raccoons censored part
12:04 Keith always makes me feel old when he starts randomly singing.
Speaking of which, my personal favorite song was "Cut The Cord". I have a bunch of their other songs in my playlist, but that one holds a place in my heart.
Edit: I'm talking about Shinedown.😅
@@antonhanna2423good song lol, I love How Did You Love a lot
im so happy this game is getting reach and a bit of the popularity it deserves after Connor picked it up.
And supereyepatchwolf's video!
Sure, I'll half watch this super dark video series while playing a game made for children in the background, why not.
This game gave me immediate dread. I need to study it like a bug.
This playthrough was recommended on reddit as an excellent blind let's play. Looking forward to it.
Note to self: If attacked by a giant 12ft, troll like monster ….. *scribbles on paper* Don’t go for the peen.
Chopping peens = insta death 💀
No, you should. Just not on the first turn. You need to target the weapon arm first, then guard, then hit the pp. The guard has a coin flip based attack on turn 2,5,8,11 etc. that you need to guard.
Oh by the way, Keith, there's a censored mod for both this game and it's sequel! To save you on editing in future if you do decide to play the sequel. Not sure if it can be modded into a currently ongoing save however
Many shorts were recommended to me of this game.
I'm gonna watch this to free myself from this.
I feel like I have to so it doesn't hunt me anymore, so thank you for making this let's play beforehand.
Funger my beloved
It's crazy you can wind up with "might as well start over" panophobia 3 minutes in.
Yeah the game is just knowledge checks
are you guys planning to play the sequel F&H2: Termina? It's more story driven than this one, more characters hence more interactions to each other and also easier to learn and much more forgiving, at least for me anyway. In my playing of F&H1, I pretty much left the magic table and rituals alone. So the easier to understand system on F&H2: Termina is really a welcome change to me, I was able to incorporate the magic, soul stones and ritual circles to my playing.
Either way, I'm excited to watch your playthrough. Good luck, you will need it hehe~
It's cool to see this through fresh eyes, but at the same time I am filled with dread. I have not played the game, nor watched a full playthrough from someone who knows nothing. But I do know way too much and it's very stressful to even think about watching this. Luckily for me, I showed up late and you already reached an end. So yeah.. I guess that makes it better. XD
Also this game in general is heavy vibes and stress would come regardless.
11:18 - his nickname was ‘Tripod’
Oh man, the Shit Pit really threw me. This is a hell of a game
"Ew a liberal" omfg I laughed so hard at this! XD
Glad you enjoyed it, I found it interesting, but overall frustrating.
I'm curious what's the racist depiction? the only thing I can think of is nas'hrah, a generally crazy character who is "from the east" (so likely somewhere in asia since this takes place in europe). or maybe the cave dwellers but I never really saw them as allegories for real people, rather creatures from the god of the depths who have evolved civilization
Gameplay starts at 16:00
Thank you random man
"A bundle of grapes." what a description
5:48 so having heard this had Berserk as one of its inspirations, I say Knight is discount Casca
Well, yeah, this game IS berserk.
(If you were one of the side characters)
Yo! Here it comes the thing! "I've been waiting for this"
As cool as Fear & Hunger is, people saying it's "like Pathologic" is... disappointing, going both ways
We very quickly came to the conclusion this game was *nothing* like pathologic lol. Later in the series we talk at length about how bad a comparison it is.
Thing: *is dark and dreary*
Everyone passing along the singular brain cell: "tHiS iS sO mUcH oF pAtHoLoGiC"
That liberal line is fucking hilarious. I can’t 😭😭
been watching your pathologic lets play repeatedly, had this pop up for me today after finishing this and the sequel. Def reccomend blind and doing second game as well. Good luck, and Praise Sylvain!
Hell yeah. That is all.
You missed the poop ending :(
Holy shit, I don't know how I missed this playthrough!

just an fyi there is a censored mod to save you from the rest of editing hell
We completed the game about a month ago, and only discovered the mod after the fact.
@@toastedringtail dang knew you were ahead but hoped i could save ya at least one episode well if you go back in for more endings at least now you know there is also an update that just blurs the cutscenes instead of flat removing them and replacing them with pinecones
@@aboveaveragegaming5503 without spoilers, there is nothing remaining for us to feasibly record at this point. We’ll make sure to find a censor mod for the second game if we play it, though.
@@toastedringtail ironically the second game doesn't need one really because the dev took the criticism from the first game lol
Love the thumbnail! xD - Just noticed that the introduction of Knight is from the lyrics to "Barbarians", a song by The Darkness.
The mistake is thinking this is an RPG when its an immersive sim, with all the items, secret mechanics and interactions between enemies and said items in combat, plus talk commands and just a bunch of these little secrets that can make your run so much easier
People keep saying this but having finished the game and having played tons of immersive sims… it’s not an immersive sim. It’s just a strict JRPG with some unique items, status effects, and interactions in battle. In terms of environmental interaction and open ended problem solving the game doesn’t really have much - most things have very optimal, clearly intended solutions that you just optimally should use to minimize all risk.
It’s more like a metroidbrainia, if anything, where your knowledge is your progression key. But that being said, it’s still all in the confines of a survival JRPG.
I’m hoping the sequel goes further towards Imsim design.
@@toastedringtail you're right! It does feel like a metroidbrania
An immersive sim cannot be an RPG?
6:10 damn the foresight
that thumbnail is crazy
this game comes with more disclaimers then a law office
When I saw that you were playing this I thought: man. Who the fuck tricked you into this horror.
While some of those things trigger me this is much safer than say, watching berserk. Plus I can’t really see well and I can listen instead and you two are filtering this.
*Reading, don’t watch the animated version if you are going to consume it.
HOLY SHIT didnt see this coming
ah yes, I love losing a hour of progress to a coinflip, or... the bird.
whenever i see people playing this for the first time i get so frustrated they always ignore the barrels and crates like PLEASE I KNOW U DONT KNOW BUT AHH😭
12 minutes in, hears a Shinedown reference.
Yeah, im sticking around.
Ah Fear and Hunger, have fun
oh also jic you or anyone else plays it again: there's a censor mod!
"Tiny, abstract, acknowledgements of anatomy." Hahahaha
love seeing that between the character choice and the randomized fear, yoy got the worst possible starting buils for a beginner hahahaha
the combination of the game and thumbnail got me to click REAL FAST
1:40 just started the video and I'll very likely forget it later so I might as well ask this now. which character/enemy are you referring to that is possibly a racist design? cuz I've played and watched several other playthroughs of both f&h 1 and 2(termina) and I genuinely can't think of anyone at the top of my head or even when I try giving it some thought.
id also like to know cuz i’m in the same boat
@@bqtter435 I remember later they mention something about the cave people being offensive or something.
@@geebeepman i figured, that’s like the only one i could assume. ty!
Cave Dweller, someone said it looks racist to indigenous people even though I think it's kinda racist to compare them to indigenous people.
@@ChloeEIizabethPrice same energy as those offended by orcs and goblins. I just see orcs and goblins but they somehow see black people and jews.

This might be a dumb question but Keith have you ever done or looked into voice acting?
Decided against using the SFW mod? Or didn’t know about it? (I think it was out? Maybe you recorded this before it was)
We recorded it a couple of months ago and went in completely blind, not knowing anything about it.
Do you ever find out that all barrels and boxes have stuff in them?
Obviously.
42:55 You saying the Old Gods are… Imposters?
"is this berserk?"
yes, actually.
A little tid bit is that some members of the F&H community called darkraccon and nocommentary have made full censor mods for the game I'd you plan on doing anything else with the game or even stream it.
