Tacet the Terror I think it’s great that he’s talking about being careful and responsible with your money, don’t buy into anything you don’t understand. Having said that people should really take the time to understand the technology. He made some good points but also some misinformed ones. Bitcoin is kind of like the dot com bubble, where people got in without understanding why the technology is so revolutionary, and caused a massive surge and and equally massive collapse. But look at the biggest companies in the world now, and where you would be had you held on to some of those companies stocks. You know, small companies like Google, Amazon, or Facebook. I think blockchain technology (the ones that are free and open) will do for finance and trade what the internet did for information, but you gotta do the research for yourselves before you invest in anything.
@Peng Bian: of those three companies you mention only Amazon actually had public stock during the dot com bubble. Google had its IPO 2004 and facebook in 2012. But yeah it will be a new technology we will use, but invest in companies/coins that have a real and achievable goal and don't invest more than you can afford to lose.
For a second I thought they actually got the bit connect guy to come on and talk about how ppl should use caution, all because his voice sounded so sad when he went "hey hey heeeeyyyyy" from behind the stage.
One thing I've noticed about John Oliver, basically every one of his episodes that aren't about a specific event (and even sometimes then), they stay relevant for YEARS. Sometimes when I'm listening I have to go down to the description and see when it came out because it's way more relevant than it should be.
I still remember going to work with that one dude who went on and on about bitcoin. One time I had enough and just clapped back: "yes yes, you got lucky but let's not forget a whole lot of other people who's in financial ruins over crytocurrency. Now shut the f up and let me work." He kinda stoped talking to me altogether after that 😬
When John Oliver said that almost anyone could create a cryptocurrency, I was dead sure that by the end of the episode, he would introduce a cryptocurrency that they created, just like he did with televanlegism.
That would probably go against the message of this video, which is "be careful and don't mindlessly throw your money into cryptocurrency..." because then a bunch of John's fans would very likely mindlessly throw their money into John's crytocurrency.

What this guy said, but slightly more polite. It was, and still is an interesting technology, but to proclaim it as the "money of the future" at such an early time was overhyped and has led to exactly what the Bitconnect guy was demonstrating. That’s clear and is not anti technology or a statement disparaging the technology, it’s just a warning to make intelligent investment decisions and to make sure you aren’t taken advantage of.
Blockchain is the technology, crypto currency is a currency and doesn't have anything to do with the technology other than being traded in it. Blockchain is good and revolutionizing, crypto is fairytail-money that has value because a lot of people like fairytails. Tokens have expected value, coins have limited real value, the technology is seperate from those two and has real application.
@@MartinSlow Money is fairy tail money. Once, it was backed by something, its weight in gold. Now the only value placed in our paper bills is because we place it there. This is why economies collapse when too much money is printed (example Germany post WWI) and also why the value of a country's money fluctuates so much compared to other companies.

Someone put it this way when asked to explain bitcoin concisely: "Imagine if leaving your truck running 24/7 produced solved sudokus that you can trade for heroin".
Andrew Harper Ignore him, this is not the only thing he has gotten wrong about crypto. Also, Sudoku is a math and logic puzzle. It may not be on the same complexity you would get with other math puzzles. And yes the metaphor is accurate. Or in a less abstraction Imagine if you left your computer on all day that produces and ‘prints’ solved math problems that you can trade for anything that has also been agreed to have value. In this case, the completed math problem is like doing a ledger in finance and can be pretty liquid. Crypto trades for crypto quite easily and only some cryptocoins have addressed to even add the financial markets into this bubble. But bitcoin can go for anything in the 1500 list, generally. John Oliver, please do this show forever
I completely lost it when he yelled out responsibility with that much enthusiasm. xD
Tacet the Terror My catholic girlfriend used to do that when she made me put it in her ass.
Peng Bian Eh... I might not be as optimistic as you but I still agree that people should be responsible and think before they invest.
@Peng Bian: of those three companies you mention only Amazon actually had public stock during the dot com bubble. Google had its IPO 2004 and facebook in 2012.
But yeah it will be a new technology we will use, but invest in companies/coins that have a real and achievable goal and don't invest more than you can afford to lose.
same here, I'm still laughing :-)

Now shut the f up and let me work." When did this aire on Television?
Now it's 57k...
When John Oliver said that almost anyone could create a cryptocurrency, I was dead sure that by the end of the episode, he would introduce a cryptocurrency that they created, just like he did with televanlegism.
They have learned that that was a bad idea.
Dude he's trying to become prime minister of Italy.... he can only do so much at one time lol
I'm sure they asked Dan to make one, but he read the script to this episode first.
That would probably go against the message of this video, which is "be careful and don't mindlessly throw your money into cryptocurrency..." because then a bunch of John's fans would very likely mindlessly throw their money into John's crytocurrency.
YourMomz07 The italian elections are over ;)
I would've lost it if Dan came out at some point to try to defend himself and John's just like "NO. GET BACKSTAGE, DAN. I HATE YOU."

@@jessefehr7249 Oh? The entire internet uses more energy than one particular part of the internet? That's amazing.
@@jessefehr7249 That's a misleading comparison. You should be comparing Bitcoin processing to a similar transaction processor like Visa since that's what it is trying to replace. I miss when GPUs were more affordable. ;-;
Atanih23 inb4 someone tells you to crypto mine so you can buy hardware because they're fucking retarded
When Cryptocurrency crashes you can buy a used 1080 Ti for prolly 200 bucks
Rednassie I got a rx 580 8gb for 240€ (Germany) now you cant get them under 400€
When were they even remotely affordable?
@JakeAndBake seriously. when it does crash, or at the very least fall enough that GPU mining stops being profitable, the flood of used high end enthusiast cards will be insane. I just don't know if I'd trust a card that has been run 24/7 at 100% load for such a long time, even if it's only $200-$300 for a 1080/Ti
People really missed the point of this video. He literally says that blockchain has potential but that is also can be abused. That’s clear and is not anti technology or a statement disparaging the technology, it’s just a warning to make intelligent investment decisions and to make sure you aren’t taken advantage of.
What makes you think people missed the point of the video?
Blockchain is the technology, crypto currency is a currency and doesn't have anything to do with the technology other than being traded in it. Blockchain is good and revolutionizing, crypto is fairytail-money that has value because a lot of people like fairytails. Tokens have expected value, coins have limited real value, the technology is seperate from those two and has real application.
Cryptocoins is a digital asset, not currency. To be a currency it has to be widely acceptable as a legal tender, which cryptocoins are not.
Who missed the point?
@@MartinSlow Money is fairy tail money. Once, it was backed by something, its weight in gold. Now the only value placed in our paper bills is because we place it there. This is why economies collapse when too much money is printed (example Germany post WWI) and also why the value of a country's money fluctuates so much compared to other companies.
Funny when he brought up how blockchains were impossible to hack..... that is before the ancient primordial art of tricking someone into giving you their login credentials returned from the depths
The fall of crypto started with,”want me to trim your armor for free in the forest?”

He could have made a billion dollars doing it.
No, I'm not kidding. People watch his show by the millions. A good portion of the fans would buy that coin out of solidarity and just because. Worst case scenario is that he only manages to raise 1500000USD, and the LastWeekCoin's value languishes after that.
Craeful Coin, the responsible crypto.
He could have but you don't "make" money, you take it from other investors. This money doesn't come from nowhere it comes from other people.
He could have gained billions, but it would have been at the expense of his audience and that's religions game, not his. He has morals
maybe the proceeds could have gone to charity or something. so it's not like HBO are just ripping off their audience, but they still get to do their stunt.
Ombro, that's basically what he died with Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption. Legally he could have kept all that money and the IRS wouldn't have complained, instead he chose to donate it to charity. Imagine how much charity could do with a billion dollars made from Lastweekcoin.

The Chicken McNugget analogy applies to all of cryptography, TBH. Anyway, what _really_ is paradoxical, is that there are tons of things that are (functionally) cryptocurrency financial intermediaries (a.k.a. "banks"), despite the claim that cryptos cut out the middleman.

Someone put it this way when asked to explain bitcoin concisely: "Imagine if leaving your truck running 24/7 produced solved sudokus that you can trade for heroin".
@Andrew Harper
From what I've heard, it's actually pretty accurate.
Andrew Harper Ignore him, this is not the only thing he has gotten wrong about crypto.
Also, Sudoku is a math and logic puzzle. It may not be on the same complexity you would get with other math puzzles.
And yes the metaphor is accurate. Or in a less abstraction
Imagine if you left your computer on all day that produces and ‘prints’ solved math problems that you can trade for anything that has also been agreed to have value.
In this case, the completed math problem is like doing a ledger in finance and can be pretty liquid. Crypto trades for crypto quite easily and only some cryptocoins have addressed to even add the financial markets into this bubble.
But bitcoin can go for anything in the 1500 list, generally.
Pretty sure I am throwing in more economics and finance into this but yeah the metaphor is spot on.
I think the analogy was about bitcoin mining...
@@incognito3402 The funny thing is that they are both right yet completely incapable of seeing they are saying exactly the same thing in different words and are arguing fiercely over meaningless semantics!
