Thank you!!! Tucked into that one spot is SOOOOO awesome. Let me know when you have time to head out that way again! This camera body and this lens really blew my mind up......... You have known me long enough to know what that means. So in response to you text, this was a rental and I had to return it.... but, mine will be here....... as soon as my credit goes though. Live for today, live right right now! 🙏💖🤗
There have been too many instances when I missed some good shots while I am engaged in a conversation with a passerby. Maybe I am the exception but I don't like to talk to anyone while I am out clicking on a trail or in a park. Loved the images in the video. Keep em coming 😊
I completely understand. I like talking to folks out there - especially other photographers. When I do miss an opportunity, I just look at it as something I have to go out for again. And when you can help someone find the sweet spot to shoot, or they help you - win, win. But I understand! 🙏💖🤗
Your hummingbird images are always great. We'll be in Anaheim for a couple of days in July. This video made me look at The KH Hummingbird Garden but it's an hour one way from where we are staying so I probably can't fit it into my itinerary. I'd love to visit there one day.
Phil - thank you!! It is a bit of a drive and traffic here always makes it way worse. It is only about 35 or so miles from me and it still takes almost an hour - longer if I hit traffic. If you do get the time, please please let me know. I would love to meet you two out there for some photography!! Leave your hotel at 6, shoot at 7, back to the hotel by 10ish! Email me if you can make it - johnmknowles65@gmail.com Would be a blast! 🙏💖🤗
Wonderful video John! The music and images combined made it mesmerizing. Very relaxing and spectacular rolled into one video. I have had some excellent results with the Z9 + 800PF and 2x TC shooting in DX format doing it HANDS FREE! Stay warm and dry brother. - Jim
Thank you. I keep watching the rental house to see when they it in stock around my schedule. The other I want to rent along with the Z8 is the 180-600. Right now, they show it available sometime in April. I may go ahead and put my order in so when it does come in, I will be able to shoot it. 🙏🤗💖
Amazing results mate. Even with the relatively low MP count, those images are just exceptional but more resolution definitely helps, especially with smaller subjects and also gives you so much more latitude in terms of changinf composition in post. Love your hummingbirds❤
Thank you Peter! I was able to shoot some butterflies this weekend with this beast as well..... and wow. I do wish the sensor was twice the size, but the results it is producing are making me happy. A lot of fun to shoot. If I could just mash up some features from each of them! 🙏💖🤗
You said you wanted to know what we think. Holy Shit those humming bird shots are unbelievable. It is very hard for me to believe that stuff is done with the R3, it looks like 40-50 megapixels. We know it's the glass as well but dam. Thanks again
Sorry for the delay - this just came up in my comments!! Thank you, thank you. Glass, glass, glass. I was a megapixel whore before I picked up the R3.... but WOW. Even the R6ii, the R8 and my new favorite - the R50 - the new bodies with great glass is simply amazing. Thank you again and forgive my delayed response. 🙏💖🤗
Thank you, thank you!! I was afraid of how much I would love this body and also a little nervous about just having 24 megapixels. I have traded all, or most, of my old gear to B&H taking the loss just to get new gear. I loved my old stuff but out of all of it, the D800 is the only one I will not part with. I have to say - this new stuff AMAZING!! 🙏🤗💖
The close focusing difference between the super zooms evens out with the simple addition of a set of inexpensive extension tubes. The bonus, as such, is those tubes will work on all RF glass. I'd love to see what you think if you have tried them.
I have indeed tried them and do have a set of the 3rd party ones since Canon does not make native RF ones. I love the way they work on the 100-500 and the 800 F11, but was not happy with the results I got using them on the 200-800. I started shooting a video specifically for that using the extension tubes but stopped and shot a regular video instead. When spring rolls around, i will use the 100-500 with a 1.4 on the R7 for my dragonflies and butterflies as I think for that application, it works better. I will have to take them out and try again!! 🙏🤗💖
Thank you, thank you Chris. It was just a rental, but I do plan on getting one. It just blew me away. I LOVE the way we can share across the world - we are fortunate for the tech we have at our fingertips!!🙏💖🤗
I think megapixels is something camera companies and UA-camrs focus on a bit too much on. And it’s mainly just to sell more cameras. I use an R6 & R6II for weddings and even though they are low megapixels, neither myself or my couples have ever been disappointed with the results. I use an R7 for my wildlife photography, just because I like to keep my wedding gear separated from my wildlife gear… ever since I shot 100 photos in crop mode at a wedding once. But most of the mirrorless cameras are great, you just have to know the limitations of each.
I couldn't agree with you more. I LOVED and still love my old Nikon D800 at 33 megapixels - perfect size. I have shot two R5 at weddings and I have to say that I wish I had used R3s - or an R6. So many advantages to a smaller sensor. I will also say that this dual processor make a HUGE difference. So at this point, if I had to pick just one camera between the R5 and R3...... it would be the R3. I prefer the full frame in low light even for wildlife, but in bright light for wildlife and macro in any light - the R7! 🙏💖🤗
Thank you, thank you!! I used to try to keep them shorter to fall into that sweet spot but these days, I really just edit for something I want to see and hope others enjoy it too. I can not thank you enough for letting me share with you. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! 🙏💖🤗
I was so blown away.... I returned some stuff to B&H....as soon as it gets there and I get my credit, I am ordering an R3. I hope to have it by the end of next week. I LOVED it!! My new favorite set up. 🙏💖🤗
I was afraid of the R3 because of the 24MP. I didn't think for wildlife that would be enough. For sports, sure, no problem. But, your images have more detail than I was expecting out of such a "small" sensor. Pretty amazing how good of a job it did on keeping focus. I saw a few misses but the miss rate was low. I am afraid to rent a R3, I may love it. I dig the overalls. It is a different look for you. 🤣
Overalls - fat guy tech. Since I no longer ride, I have enjoyed putting on weight and eating what ever and when ever - absolutely awesome letting myself get fat. I rented the R3 with trepidation for that same reason but I really wanted to try it. I was impressed with the clarity and detail when I rented the Sony A6700 and had the 200-600 lens at only 24 megapixels. This one blew me away more than the R5 did the first time I shot it. When I shoot a burst like that, I keep the misses in to show that it is not perfect but over all it is AMAZING. I am working on the R3 and 600 F4 at the Malibu lagoon as well - wow even cropped in. After using this, my two favorite combos are the 100-500 with or without extender on the R7, and the 200-500 on the R3. So much so that........ Think about how much clarity the older pro level DSLRs - both Canon and Nikon gave us with smaller sensors. So when I started processing photos.... well, I want one really bad even over my R5 (I dont have it anymore). Depending on what the R1 or R5I offers, I may get one of those as well. This is an amazing camera body with the dual processors - it makes a HUGE difference. 🙏💖🤗
I was tempted to get an R3 with the recent price drops, but want to see what happens with the R1 and R5 MKII first. If you're disciplined enough to shoot where you don't need to crop a ton, the R3 is going to be phenomenal! But, the crop ability of the R5 is unmatched for small bird photography.
Before I shot this - I would have agreed with you. I really fell in love with this dual processor and the clarity. I have cropped on the one I am working on and still super impressed. Of course, I do wish the sensor was bigger, but I was still so blown away. I want to see what the R5II and R1 have in store as well. I would think the price on both will be up there quite a bit. This was so much fun to shoot. 🙏💖🤗
Thanks for sharing these great images. While the R3 won't be in my camera stable it's great to see what it can do. I do have the R8 and have tried it with the 200-800 and it's a really good combo for the price. I tend to shoot my bird photos in single shot mode and don't go shutter happy so the R8 does a great job. That said 8 times out of 10 I will go with the R5. If I'm in a sketchy situation and I don't want to risk the R5 the R8 is great.
The R3 was no where on my radar. I rented it as a last minute decision one evening...... and I am so sorry that I did. I was so blown away buy it that is was really REALLY hard to send it back. When I had the Sony A6700 with only 24 megapixels, that was impressive and sharp so I was hoping I would not like the R3 that much. I sell/trade old gear and dont mind the loss. It allows me to get new gear to have fun with. I like the 200-800 on a full frame over the R7 so although I have not shot the R8, i am sure it is pretty awesome!! 🙏💖🤗
I generally prefer an emphasis on birds over gear, which is all too rare on UA-cam. Still, it's nice to see how well your set-up performs. Thanks for sharing these gorgeous images, which brought a smile to my face. Personally, I agree with your preference for the RF 100-500, which is a superior lens. On my R7, that's more than enough reach, even before adding the 1.4x teleconverter.
Thank you, thank you. I could show birds and little creatures all day long but I try and add in something for everyone. Every lens or body offer something that the others do not and I try to mention that a lot because I know a lot watch looking for this bit of kit thinking it will be the perfect set up. As we both know, there is no prefect set up, just the one in your hands. I try to make the clear even when asked questions. Thank you for letting me share my treasure with you!! 🙏🤗💖
Thank you, thank you. The R3 is my favorite body for so many reasons. The 200-800 works really well on the R3 and on full frame in general in my opinion.
