- With its bigger checklist and highest prices ever, 2024 Topps Chrome -- especially wax! -- is not a great place to put your hobby funds. Here Chris and Jeff come up with some other ideas on how to use that same money to get something that is more likely to hold value.

Jeff here: while Chris has been on Freeman for awhile, I’m right there with him now as one of the best buys in the hobby. He is just so consistent and I can see him playing at a high level for another 6-8 years. Thanks for watching!

I ripped a case of hobby. It was a ton of fun but the estimated loss that I took is around $700.
MVP buybacks will help a bit when that time comes (assuming it’s Ohtani and Judge).
In addition there are a number of cards that will go to my PC so I wouldn’t consider those a loss.
All in all, the new price points are too high for this checklist.

This video described my life the last couple weeks. I've even been targeting the exact players you mention. Great minds think alike! Lo!! Haven't bought any chrome. I may wait ten years, see who pans out from this rookie class and get their singles then.

Got lucky with my hobby box. Got a Shota Imanaga purple /250 auto, at the moment at least is going for over $200

Today I considered dropping around $1400 on a gold chrome auto of a top guy. I then decided to look at comps of gold chrome autos of Gunnar, Rutschman, Corbin Carroll and Volpe, graded, and only Gunnar in a PSA 10 was above $1400 in recent comps. Had to tell myself to wait. It's hard to wait, but you have to if you want your money to go farther.

I purchased four booster boxes, two jumbos and five hobby boxes and one monster box wondering if I should’ve done something else trying to get back into the hobby got out early 90s though I have to say from the stuff I bought I’ve gotten pretty lucky with auto with numbers and I got one auto Blue I think it’s number 150 . Had the most fun, ripping open six boxes of Mattie’s 2024 prospects autos probably the best polls I’ve gotten yet. bought six boxes got seven 1 of 1 a lot number 5 of 10.
No doubt opening packs can be fun! I’m not familiar with the product you got six boxes of, but sounds like you did really well with low numbered stuff
Loved the concept of this video, and loved all of the players mentioned! Been buying a ton of JRam and Lindor rookie singles/slabs and I'm glad I've gravitated towards spending almost all of my hobby money on those instead of wax. Keep up the great content guys!
Thanks, Dee! Sounds like you’re in the same strategy wavelength as us. There are no guarantees in the card world, of course, but I like our chances better than just opening a bunch of wax at these prices!

What a timely discussion. I have definitely been feeling the itch to buy a chrome hobby completely forgetting all the no name player autos that cost me hundreds of dollars in hobby boxes. Sticking to cards I want at least for today.

I really like ultra violet from this year 2024 topps chrome. Too me they are similar to kaboom or downtown of basketball and football but way underprice

Firstly, love the video! So much fun to hear what you'd guys would buy. I'd love to even hear what you'd buy with the money you could be spending on two hobby boxes or two jumbo boxes!
Secondly, screw Manny Machado forever. I will never purchase one of his cards ever ever ever.
Thirdly, and in all seriousness, I think a big issue that you didn't touch on with regards to singles vs. hobby boxes is upside. Obviously there is upside with the cards you guys mentioned, but is Freeman's card going to double in value in a few months? Probably not, but it's quite possible with the cards you could pull out of a 2024 Topps Chrome hobby box. So what we're looking at is two different approaches here. One a high risk/high reward route, and one a more measured route. That all said, I haven't and likely won't be buying any Topps Chrome hobby boxes this year, but I was looking at some fun Mookie cards in that price range.
Anyway, just some thoughts. Love the videos! Be well, gents.

And you’re right, opening wax CAN have some upside, but the odds are just so long against getting anything that will be worth even close to the box value two months from now - especially when the hype dies down and new products appear.
I wish the opportunity cost was lower, that these boxes still were $85!
Breaks my heart that Yordan autos are so cheap. It must be an indication to buy more lol especially with the consistent dominance in the batters box he’s exemplified since entering the league. Looking forward to the rocket ships Yordan sets out to launch in the years to come!

I’ve always been a graded singles collector especially from the 4th degree burns of being scorched by some high end boxes I bought years ago and never looked back since

If I have the itch to rip. I buy 2022 Topps Chrome Sonic hobby boxes for around $35.00
I think they are super fun to open. Lots of Refractors and they do have the Expose case hits in them.
Other than that I've been doing the same. Buying mid 2000's Topps Chrome, Refractors.

Manny never juiced, and he is always a buy as he sits now. Love that people hate on him, keep them prices down. His Orange Chrome RC is a great looking card, non auto. Was able to get a clean raw one last year.

I just bought a blaster for 40 I pulled a base RC of Langford and a prizm of Elly I’m not sure if that’s worth 40 dollars though.
Probably not, but could be a lot worse! The Elly should have decent value.
I'm buying a blaster of chrome, because I have 20 bucks in free money from fanatics. Got to love the free fantasy game they have

You can't lose on buying the best cards of the best players going back in time. When a Jumbo Hobby Chrome was $150 with 5 autos..... I could see it worth a shot.... but over $500 is just stupid and with only 3 autos. Sealed product has been a bad buy since 2021.... even then maybe 2018 was the last really great year to buy new sealed and rip for fun. I did spend a lot on 20219 and some on 2020.... Sealed products are now just a breaker thing. or maybe a retail blaster. for fun.

I am a big fan of 1991 Fleer baseball.
Many have lauded the 1991 Fleer set as the worst set design of all-time! That yellow border is not appreciated, but I tell you what, the price is right for a box!
Completely agree with avoiding ripping 2024 Topps Chrome BUT thoughts on buying hobby boxes to hold? I could see the wax value for 2024 Topps Chrome to have a lot of potential upside given all of the rookies that have "the potential" to be future stars.
I do love buying wax to hold, so I like where your head’s at. But this is just so expensive already! Personally it would be tough for me to justify buying this to hold vs say, 2018 wax.
Still, buying and holding definitely seems like a better choice than buying and ripping. Are you considering stocking up on some?
@@Blabbin_Bout_Slabbin Yeah, the best price I've found for a hobby box is $205 (with a $10 coupon for being a new customer). Still, not a cheap buy, and the opportunity cost is a major consideration here as you guys pointed out!
I wish I was disciplined enough to hold on to wax. I just can't do it. I have to rip it.

When it comes to ssp, we look for a couple things - True rarity and a great image. If the image isn’t memorable or special, then the card probably won’t be either.

So we all "know" this but why is it still so hard to just do the logically thing and just buy singles of players we want? I've been in a few player breaks (10 casers) that cost less than the price of two blasters ($60, lower end players like Red Sox David Hamilton) and I am much happier with the results. One good chance at an auto of a player I actually want is better than getting little I actually want. I got two of his autos. One was numbered.
An excellent question! I think it's the gambler gene being activated in all of us. I do have to say though that the higher Fanatics goes with these prices, the easier it will be for me to lay off the wax. It's getting absurd.
I just won an auction for a '24 Topps Chrome Black Refractor autograph Coco Montes serial #03/10 for $25 shipped. This is generally what you're looking at for re-sale value on 80%+ of the checklist. Probably the worst cost to return ratio ever on a modern product. I'd buy anything you guys listed over any of this product unopened.

I definitely am not buying it. Way to expensive. On a normal jumbo what do u get back? $100-175 worth of cards? I think they want the entire hobby to be breakers and people buying in so I don't do that either. Crazy high priced boxes only breakers will get and people will buy in for a lot cheaper. I don't understand why anyone is buying these. Total gamble.
What's not a gamble? Take the 450 and get 9 hobby boxes of 22 heritage high number OR like u guys said just grab a few singles. Great vid.
