    Another option to play two player mode: Bruce Lee and Yamo team up to make the game easier. Bruce collects the lanterns to progress and Yamo beats up the ninja. That's how we use to play it 😅

    A classic on all systems, as far as I can tell.
    Now known as simply "Lee", due to licensing issues.

    Licensing a celebrity's name and likeness is often far easier and cheaper than dealing with a studio to license a movie.

    I suddenly remembered the game Bruce Lee Lives from The Software Toolworks. I remember playing it a lot on my old DOS PC even if it wasn't the best game.

    Definitely a nostalgic game for me, though I had the Spectrum version. Good balance of difficulty for the time too.

    An old favorite, wasted many a day playing this one. We had a cracked version so no docs, I always imagined the underground fortress was a sort of reference to Enter the Dragon with its underground prison and drug lab.
    The movies had a lot of Chinese vs. Japanese subtext (kung fu vs. karate, etc) which I guess can explain the ninja and sumo. I'm willing to believe the designer did it on purpose.

    If memory serves correctly, the Commodore has control over the datasette player. So games can load from the datasette multiple times rather than one single, long load.

    This was easily one of the best C64 games ever released. The thing that made it great was the responsiveness; Bruce moves really fast and it's easy to control him with a one button joystick. it was pretty common for C64 games to have bad programming when it came to the controls but this was one of the good ones.

    I remember I have the Sinclair spectrum version of this game when I was a kid, but sadly, after the whole in the floor opened and you go down, the game just stops. I always think my copy of the game was broken but later I try to emulate it on PC and I see the same bug 😢.

      My guess was "His twin brother, Luce Bree". At least for the "Two players vs Computer", where neither is controlling Green Yamo.
      Of course, one could make the game easier by agreeing beforehand to control the Green Yamo and keep him out of the way of your friend, removing one of the hazards. That'd be the kind of thing I probably would've done, I was never big on being competitive. ^_^;;

    This is particularly fun with 2 players where you can really irritate the shit out of the player playing Bruce Lee. For example at the "tree things" you can continuously kick Bruce back into the fire: He has to run over it to not be incinerated. If you place yourself right you can kick him right back in before he can do anything. etc. I nearly made my brother cry with irritation over this game. 🙂

    I played the inferior PC version of this game many times as kid. It was made extra hard because it ran too fast on my Amstrad 8086. I got close to the end but I never finished it because at some point the lasers moved impossibly fast.

    Having played this game to death over the decades it's easy to forget how unintuitive it is by modern standards (like how are you supposed to know straight away how to cross the black blockade thingy in the 3rd room or when the floor in 2nd room opens). It doesn't help that the game is jank as heck, with you often getting stuck or thrown out of animations on scenery and stuff.
    Still, I will often return to this game, it's one of my fondest childhood memories and it's a fun way to spend a few minutes, with how short it actually is.

    It's a small thing, but I feel that it's a nice touch that landing on an enemy seems to deal damage to them (or at least knock them down).

    The second player gets to play as the "Green Yamo", and tries to prevent Mr. Lee from completing his mission.
    EDIT: As you discover later in the video.

    This game might not be based on any specific movie, but it's a great game.
    "Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story" on the other hand is based on a movie, and it's definitely a less great game.

    I never had commodore so instead I played a wonderful PC remake by Mark Rosten made in 2001 which I also finished entirely on my WinXP. Sadly doesn't work that well on win10. On real 8-bit computers, I played Amstrad conversion which was pretty good though running around felt much slower.

      Maybe this was developed as a generic martial arts game and had the Bruce Lee name stuck to it when it was near completion. That's how the Conan the Barbarian game from the same developer ended up with random settings and fighting with boomerangs.

    • @Pixelmusement
      @Pixelmusement  6 місяців тому +1

      @root42 So here's the silly thing about asking someone to do that: The C64 doesn't have a hardware DAC, meaning all digital-to-analog conversions of sampled audio are handled at a software level, meaning the quality can vary considerably based on how much CPU power and RAM you devote to the process. This is why the voice samples in some old games sound very crisp and clear while others on the exact same hardware sound unintelligible; It's all down to how much CPU and RAM was devoted to the process. :P

    • @root42
      @root42 6 місяців тому

      @@PixelmusementI know. I have a bunch of C64s with different SIDs. If you give me a sample I could make a bunch of recordings off of real hardware if you like.

    Not so long ago, I watched both Timothy Dalton's James Bond movies, and one of them had Chinese ninja lead by Shang Tsung himself, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa. So I'm guessing western lack of proper cultural awareness was something common of the era. XD

      Yeah it's a pretty typical mishmash of "asian cool things". Not like we knew all the nuances ourselves back in the day, I chalk it up to generalization and lack of knowledge rather than exploitation and/or malice.

    • @Pixelmusement
      @Pixelmusement  6 місяців тому +1

      I don't. Immortality would mean being limited to Human-tier comprehension for all eternity and infinite wealth serves no purpose other than to separate and isolate you from everyone else on an emotional level. :P

      @@dinitroacetylen ...if you say so, but all of the media I've witnessed, stories and poems I've read, all of it leads to the conclusion that the quest for immortality is often taken by the morally bankrupt, as is the quest for infinite wealth. Why would I ever aspire to be like that? :P

    "I correct myself later on." about what? Hong Kong is in China. And yes, Ninjas are Japanese.

    • @Pixelmusement
      @Pixelmusement  6 місяців тому +5

      Hong Kong is in China NOW. From the mid 1800s up to 1997 that was not the case, plus even now Hong Kong maintains its own separate governance and such compared to China, so calling someone from Hong Kong "Chinese" can be a bit of a misnomer, especially when said someone was born there during British rule. :P
