  • Temporary long-stay French visas
Temporary long-stay French visas are valid for up to one year and are non-renewable since the next stage is a cds which you can apply on the tenth month.
If you come to France on a Temporary long-stay French visa and want to stay longer than a year, you will need to apply for a French residence permit and meet the criteria for extending your stay.
The Temporary long-stay French visa acts as a temporary residence permit in France. You need to validate within three months of arriving in France. Once you complete the validation process, you can travel freely around the Schengen Area for the duration of your permit.
The application process for this visa is similar to the short-stay visa process. You can apply by visiting a French embassy or consulate in your home country or you can do it online. Standard documentary requirements are:
Travel ID such as a passport which is valid for at least three months after your travel dates.
    Two recent passport photos
Supporting documents, which will depend on the purposes of your stay. These usually include proof of reason for traveling (e.g., study invitation letter), proof of finances, and health insurance
You will then need to attend an appointment at the French embassy or consulate in your home country to submit your biometric data and pay your visa fees. The fee for this visa is €99. You will need to present both your French visa and passport along with all documents when you enter France.
Also known as VLS-TS visas which broadly fall into the following three categories.
Temporary worker visa, Study and training visa And a Special Purposes Visa…. We also have videos on those topics

Before Brexit, I had a lifetime CdS. I didn't need a passport as I was an EU citizen and could travel freely within Schengen (PS I bought my boat in Schengen). I had no right to vote in the referendum but had to abide by its result. Had to renew my passport in 2021, apply for new CdS, now valid 10 years. Boat registered in France, car registered in France. French retirement pension and health coverage along with extra cover through "Mutuel". I am literally "chez moi". I speak fluent French, though folks often ask me which region I come from. I've abided by the rules since I came to France nearly 50 years ago (brief return to Scotland and Norfolk 1983-85). Stick to the rules and life is simple. Try to play the wise guy and karma will catch up with you.

😂😂 Just had a thought. When you decide to live in France, it's probably a good idea to get interested in French music. What are your favourite French musicians? If in doubt, say "Johnny" and start to whistle "House of the Rising Sun". 😂😂 As for me, a 71 year-old, I love Magma, Voulzy, Souchon,, Cabrel, Balavoine, Renaud, Indochine, Téléphone, Gold and the fabulous France Gall. Whatever you do, don't mention Yves Montand or Mireille Mathieu. 🤣🤣

@@LostinFrance-bu5zw Physically dead but very much alive in spirit. He's still No1 as far as most French people are concerned.

You seem down to earth and explain things well. How does one address the proof of lodging while in another country( US). Must I travel to France, find a place, pay the rent for a year to have the required French Address, return to US then get an appointment with VISA office, wait for approval, then return to France. Would an AirBNB for 3 months suffice as a permanent address? Trying to get a time line established. Can anyone help? Thanks

How long should I enter France after receiving a French long stay visa? Do I need to arrive in France within 1 month? Or should it arrive within 2 months?
    Is there a set period?

I am having a hard time finding insurance that isn't astronomical. I am in good health but the prices seem kinda high. Any recommendations for just basic health coverage?

Hello. We are retired American educators. I am still researching the financial documents; does the income of the "monthly minimum" x 12 months suffice or must I have $50,000 in savings? Our pensions and social security are around $45/year. We own our condo $270k; rents out at $1500/month. Fidelity Investments around $40k. Must we have sizable cash savings, or will passive income and equity suffice? Thank you! Dean & Cindy

Thanks or this. It's something I'm seriously think of. For the 26 years we spent 10 weeks every summer at my mother's house in the Dordogne. Sadly because of bad tax advice post Brexit she sold it. It is one my family's biggest regrets that we didn't buy it from her. 😩
