Great info! I have a few vintage clarinets I bought purely for the fun of trying to make them playable again. I have struggled what to value them as for insurance purposes, the values from repair techs feels way high, but this makes much more sense now.

Insurance-wise is somewhat easy. As it is either "replacement" of same make/model or "replacement" of a current level instrument. The replacement of a current level instrument is basically if you bought a 1950 Buffet clarinet, it was the "pro model". This a current level replacement would be, say a new Buffet Elite or one of the other professional models. A vast $$ difference from buying another used 1950 Buffet. Then Open Market, etc.
