How to Convert TS to MP4 with VLC Media Player

- This quick tutorial will show you how to convert a TS video file to MP4 using VLC Media Player. Converting video files is done quickly and easily in VLC, allowing you to convert multiple videos at once.
To convert your TS video you'll need to open the Convert/Save options via the Media menu. Add the video that you want to convert then continue. Finally you can input your export settings by creating a new profile. For converting videos to MP4 it is best to set the format to MOV/MP4 then change the codec to H-264.
The exporting proccess is fairly quick, however it does depend on the video length. VLC will display a loading bar at the bottom to indicate how far the video conversion has progressed.

Remember to check the audio tab in the settings too. Then change the codec to mp3 if you do not have audio in your output videos. This will solve the problem. Otherwise great video.
Thank you. What if you have a video_ts and audio_ts (I'm converting old vhs, and my converter creates these dvd files)? How do I add the audio to my mp4?
Should I set up it's "Bitrate" section to "0" too?

Same here. I even tried the pre-installed profile «h246 video + mp3 audio» then I only got audio.

I know this video has been ages ago, but to people who may have had the same problem: I encountered a problem where I would just get an unplayable MP4 file when I converted my TS file. I found the problem: subtitle file. When I removed the subtitle file from the folder, I was able to convert seamlessly.
You forgot to mention, press the play button to begin the conversion process.
It makes me wonder, what else did you forget to mention? Cos my attempts have, well... I don't like the audio being out-of-synch with the video.

It isn't that simple A VIDEO_TS "folder" has multiple files that VLC doesn't combine to make an MP4 file. It will not convert them into anything workable.

Well explained, following this video converting work well, Thanks for this video. For audio its necessary, when creating profile, to select tab audio codec and click check boxes Audio and optionally keep original audio track.

I had audio issues with VLC, then i tried the free Handbrake that did the job. I right-clicked on the .ts file to open Handbrake and had to adjust the dimensions in the dimension-tab and then it worked fine for me as a beginner.

Didn't work. Followed all the steps exactly the same way but VLC just crashes.
I followed the steps but got stuck at a recurring message: The output file already exists (I used a new name when saving it to the same folder as the ts file). If recording continues, the file will be overridden and its content will be lost. 2 buttons: Overwrite, Keep existing file. No matter which one I choose, the same message box keeps coming back.

I need help in converting TS file so I thought this would be helpful. I did all the steps and it did convert but it did not play anywhere else. My original file was a TS.IFO file. would that make a difference?

Your converting file must've timing that would show how long it would take, try clicking the status bar in the view section above. Also, it depends on how big your file is.

Na primeira tentativa o arquivo convertido ficou sem áudio. Para resolver isso, na configuração do novo perfil, acessei a aba "Codificador de áudio", ao lado da aba "Encapsulamento", e marquei a opção "Manter a trilha original de áudio".

I have a bunch of DVDs in TS form I want to convert to mp4, but when you open the video folder it has several other files in it. You need a player to view them. So I don't know how to convert the separate files into one playable mp4
hmm... There is a way to merge videos with VLC but its complicated. There are a few good video tutorials on UA-cam for it. Once you export the final video just choose the default MP4 preset and it should work.
Alternatively you could try converting the files to MP4 with either VLC or Handbrake, then merge them with a free video editing program like Shotcut.

This doesn't even come close to working. The VIDEO_TS "folder" has several files, all of which are necessary:
VIDEO_TS.BUP,
VIDEO_TS.IFO,
VIDEO_TS.VOB,
VTS_01_0.BUP,
VTS_01_0.IFO,
VTS_01_0.VOB,
VTS_01_1.VOB,
VTS_01_2.VOB,
VTS_01_3.VOB,
VTS_01_04.VPB
All ten of these files must be combined to make ONE MP4 file, but there is no way to choose *all* of them to combine them into the one file. If you convert any one of the files but not the others you'll get only audio with no video, video with no audio, or static. You DO NOT GET A SINGLE MP4 FILE THAT WORKS FROM ANY OF THEM.
@@simonmacomber7466 they aren’t TS files, what comes after the period is the file format. This video is referencing videos that use the .ts format. The files you just listed are not ts files.
How long would it take to convert a 4 GB file?

oh sorry, you can check the audio box. I think the default MP4 template in VLC is also good for converting.
what if the video i wanna convert is 1.5gb minimum

when setting up the profile you can switch to audio tab and enable it. Also there is a default MP4 profile that works pretty well.
I don't understand why you guys didn't try medlexo yet, you should try it. Like 10x faster

After trying to use vlc and numerous other programs, DumboFab video converter is what I found very nice and easily to use, have many settings that we can''t find at another software, i like the effects in this software as it has many types.... You can use it to convert ts to mp4 lossless.

I guess I did somethin' wrong...I don't have half of the options in the video. I tried to post a comment today in the forum and registered my account and I cannot get a question to post.. does anyone know if there is an undo, revert, restore, repair, fix, return to original? I paused a video on my Samsung & locked my phone, put it in my pocket & apparently something happened, I tried for hours to get it back & it's only 22 seconds.. I had a similar situation last night as well, the video is drastically shorter.. please help me. I used vlc when I had my laptop set up, (then had extreme medical stuff for 9 yrs.) Decided to use vlc for my Android, (as it plays well with Malwarebytes.. (if it ain't broke.. ) I didn't have any trouble.. I'm just devastated.. also can vlc do acc files? Thank you for helping & no need to make fun of me, I'm already stressed with official stuff that I've been working on for several months, 12-17 hr. day's, with Google and Samsung updates that caused me to lose over 7k files, got most back then gave a lady a ride to work and she mistakenly grabbed my phone and I spent the next 9 hrs. Tracking my phone after tearing my truck apart looking for it & I have a stalker. & there's more than that, but you've got the idea.. no negativity please.. ✌🏽🙏🏽💜
