Today we're going to a museum all about the North of England over a thousand years ago. It's a working farm, a museum, a back to work initiative, and it's next to a medieval monastery and one of Europe's largest car import dockyards. Oh! And it used to be a gasworks. I know. It's amazing!
Let's go to Jarrow Hall and the Bede Museum, because they've got a brand new replica Anglo-Saxon sword and it looks amazing*. I like swords. You like swords. We all *love our under funded local museums and cultural centres: so let's roll!

Spook is the indisputable star of this video. Sorry, sword.
I second this 😂😂
I third this.
Our local museum in Decatur, Texas burned to the ground last year. It was a Gothic Revival style building that had started its life as a Seminary. It housed the original documents and collection from The Lost Battalion. It also housed hundreds of primary documents used most often by genealogical researchers. My daughter had graduated from pre-school in their auditorium and was married there [it was the only venue locally that allowed us to use heavy metal music for the processional]. All was lost. There have been a lot of tears - and we are working toward re-establishing. I never thought of asking reinactors to become part of our efforts, but the trust has 5 acres, so it might be doable! Thank you.
That's so heartbreaking, I'm so sorry for your loss. But it does sound like you might have a perfect space for hosting a reenactor event!
I saw an advice post today that said " You don't need anything from Target. Go to a museum. You just want to look at things."
My additional advice is in lieu of a museum if you are like me and wake up around the time most museum start closing, is antique stores. And in good weather maybe a flea market. But they're full of junk these days here.
I absolutely adore your generosity in promoting all these smaller historical places that need public support to continue on with their missions. Thank you for all you do, Jimmy.
Yeah, someone remind Musk and Bezos when you get that rich you're supposed to have patronages of the arts. It's so sad to see these amazing places struggle
They would just try to buy the places and turn them into commercial theme parks...🤮
Spook’s like, “Yes, greetings. You are new, so we follow a strict rule here that you must tithe your noms to me. I will be expecting immediate acquiescence. Thank you.”
Spook is a good naughty kitty.
How dare you slander that clearly innocent cat. You probably just lost the chicken.
Garnet work on Anglo-Saxon craft is amazing. As a kid, I assumed that it was enamel, and I was surprised to lean it is cut and shaped and polished gems. 😍🤩
Talking of wonderful gems, it is always lovely to see another video from Jimmy.
Re: the Welsh museum needing help, I'd bet one Michael Sheen would be keen to help if he hasn't already
No doubt!
Laughing at the fact that you posted this as I was finishing my day at a museum event that included reenactors! Can confirm, we do really good visitation days like this.
Jimmy Loves A Sword would make an excellent band name.
November of last year I was in Newcastle for two days and went out to Jarrow and don't regret it one bit. As an Aussie archaeologist just showing up one cloudy day in late autumn and wanting to chat, all the staff and volunteers were so passionate and welcoming and I cannot recommend visiting enough. So good to see you giving them a shout out, Jimmy! And yes, you do really need to watch your food around the cats
For the algorithm! For Jimmy!!! 🏴
HURAAAAAH!

The delightful hidden museum
The tenacious & resourceful cat.
Please spread, dear Algorithm
That was low key the cleanest transition from talking about medieval weaponry to modern internet privacy I’ve ever seen in my time on youtube 😂😂😂
I live near Llancaiach Fawr. It was a massive part of my childhood (part of everyone local really) :(
Small museums on this side of the world (new Zealand) are struggling too
Always thought of NZ as the Wales of abroad ❤ Always overlooked yet one of the most beautiful places in the world
Hehe, I love how prominently Spook features in this video. Next time you're there, give him scritches for me!
I’ve never thought of the benefit to museums that reenactors can bring (I’m not part of a group but definitely love to go see them!) It’s a wonderful thing that y’all do!
I would ride into battle under spook's banner!!
Spook is the reason picnic hampers were invented.
@@apcolleen and a king among cats!
There's a cat?! I'm on my way!
There are *three*
I'd love to cuddle with Spook! _And_ see the sword and the other animals.
One of the things I've learned from my first year of re-enactment is that a lot of the public are under the impression that we as re-enactors get paid for the events we do.
The group I'm in do a lot for charity based sites and events, which always gives a good feeling to support historical sites that need help.
As a half Welsh Geordie studying for an MA in Museum studies, this video makes me very happy! Thank you for talking about Jarrow Hall, it's a very special place that deserves more attention.
Close to were I live there are 3 viking museums with reconstructed houses etc. Foteviken, Trelleborgen and Vikingatider. All in Scania south Sweden. Trelleborgen is reconstructed at the site of a trelleborg. Conviniently situated in the town of Trelleborg :) . And yes I go there on events. But we have a really obscure very very very small private museum here also. Kannibalmuseet :) . Swedish tv even made a program of Kannibalmuseet. And YES it is what it sounds like. 😂
Hahaha, love those cognates - One needn't speak swedish to know what to expect at the Kannibalmuseet 😅
(I appreciate your entire post, as well 😊)
Im a new student at Newcastle uni and Jarrow is on my to-go list!! After this vid its definitely moved up the ranks in terms of priority haha! Thanks for the video and lovely message :^)
❤ for Spook! 😼
Jarrow has made it to my historic bucket list.
Cats domesticated us for the chicken. [And granaries, hypocausts, and fishing ports, of course. We weren't worth bothering with before we had at least some of those things.]
I am going to Durham next weekend, got something to do on '''saturday, looking forward to meeting Spook.
Thank you for the link to the Llancaiach Fawr petition, I live aabout 3 miles aawa and I am disgusted by my local counc

hi Jimmy, i'm a 13 year old italian guy Who lives in Turin. I love your videos, very well produced ! I'm a very big history buff, i especially like late antique stuff and the Franks, so It would be so cool of you did a video on the early Franks, king clovis, their religione and culture. Thanks!
you are amazing
Salve e grazie Gregorio! I love the Franks too, so I will be doing a video. You’re very kind!
thank you very very very much Jimmy!
grazie a te
Small local museums need the all the promo they can get. There's one in my home town that I didn't even know existed until my 20's despite being on the main high street! There's just a little plaque next to the door saying Tollbooth Museum and the whole thing is inside a 17th century gaol - so cool! I was also visiting a town further up the coast from me specifically for their aquarium and when we were wandering around looking for other stuff to do, we stumbled upon a toy museum in an old church. It was literally just someone's lifetime collection of toys from Victorian dollhouses and rocking horses to furby's and pokemon. I would never have known to look for it but it was absolutely fascinating.
Being a bookworm interested in history I read Bede as a teenager. Recently found a copy of his book again on Kindle at a price I could afford so have purchased it and will reread it, no doubt I missed [or have simply forgotten in the last 50 years ] a lot but I look forward to reading his works again. Thank you for a great video.
Does the shop have an online site, I live in Ireland so the odds on being able to visit are small [wish I could, would love to visit the relatively local Northumberland Zoo as well but am disabled and don't drive] but I WOULD be interested in the items in their shop if they have an online site.
My mental health was bad for many years and I just kind of stopped going anywhere and doing anything. Now it has not only begun to improve, I’ve also left full time work to return to uni and I’m trying to get back to going out and doing interesting things. This has given me the idea to make a list of all the museums and other similar properties/events, and try and get to as many different ones as I can. Thank you!
Oh I wish you all the best! I think you are really on to something- heading for the less popular, or well known gems that are local museums. I hope you run into wonderful passionate people that keep you to continue your healing journey. I am sure your smile, curiosity, and kind presence is most welcome and appreciated . Never under estimate how much good a kind word, a bit of sincere interest. and eyes that crinkle with a smile does for the rest of the world. Sincere wishes for your health and comfort, new discoveries, and unlimited curiosity and joy! From Colorado Springs, CO USA.
I live in Jarrow, that's my home town ... I absolutely love Bedes World, we went as a child with school so many times.
I haven't visited for a few years other than the cafe.
I need to go to the museum again now!! Thank you for the video prompt to visit again!
Go man go! It’s well worth another visit!
That blade is breathtakingly beautiful! It's too bad the glass doesn't have more of a reputation to draw visitors in. You have to wonder how it survived.
“..you find me half dressed…” Uh-oh, is Jimmy filming in his shorts again???
Small museums are my favorite thing to go to when traveling because they tend to be more locally focused and often you get a much closer view of artifacts and exhibits. Thank you for bringing us along to Jarrow Hall. Unfortunately I’m in the US so I can’t visit it myself but this was a good reminder to go to the smaller museums in my area.
I feel ya, the yoke & goad that burden the heart with aching & inflame it with wrath. Libraries & museums being shuttered, the treasures of the people (not all of them physical) being buried or destroyed. It makes the head feel off center. Glad that folk fight against this enclosure of the public mind.
Oh as a medieval reenactor myself I know that exact feeling when you forget your cloak at home by accident and it starts to be cold or raining. I do multiple reenactment events a month so I do a lot of reenactment. Some months I have reenactment events almost every weekend. I do a lot of over night camping reenactment events too. I reenact the medieval executioner/torturer. And I love reenactment it’s an amazing community.
I love demo fighting, SCA fiighter, not super living history level of a re-enactorr, but i love early medieval history and it's so much fun to volunteer to help local orgs. Plus we do it for recruiting other interested people. Granted California doesn't have the amount of Viking/Anglo-Saxon museums you're going to have. 😂
Museums are always a net positive
The Living Farm Museum in my county got shut down recently. I miss that place where I formed many wonderful memories with my family. Folks, please support your local museums and historic sites so they can continue to keep history alive.
Working cats are indeed a rare breed. 😆
depends where you are....
Terrible news about Llancaiach Fawr - and it was the reenactors who really brought it alive for us. My daughter was outraged to hear that under12s had to stand at Tudor dinner tables!
Thanks too for the Moldova tip with Nord (am already a customer, they‘re fab), will try that out. Right now I have it set on Italy to practice my Italian with the ads. Scoprio di piu!
Jarrow Hall would be a great destination for people who are getting the Newcastle ferry to Amsterdam. You could go to the museum in the morning before driving over to the ferry port.
All Blessings and Honors for Volunteers everywhere!
Hurrah for the site and hurrah for Jimmie!
Can confirm, joining a reenactment society is very fun! My group does 1858-1865, so a very different time. But it's a hobby that opens up so many exciting opportunities and teaches new skills! I've learned so much. I highly recommend finding a local group and giving it a try!
Can't explain how happy this video notification made me! I had a so-so day, and a so-so evening, but now I have things to think about, maps to search and museums to visit around my area. Just so you know, the stories you keep showing in your videos make my days a little bit better. Thank you!
I had a tree fall on the roof over my bed yesterday during the hurricane about an hour after I went to bed at 6:00 a.m... So I guess it could be worse lol. I'm having micro sleeps while standing up. And now I'm going to go watch Rob Words new video from my bed which is currently in the living room.
I had a waterproof mattress protector, and a lanolized wool cover on it which both got thrown in the wash on cold already. So yay wool! We push the bed out of the way before the water started pouring in.
It nice having my usual Friday and Saturday content creators videos to watch.
@@apcolleen omg, that's scary! Hope you're ok!
Where’s the link for the museum?
You are so clean shaven. It's absurd. Thank you for this video.
What's the difference between stained glass and colored glass?
Not sure what the difference is archaeologically, but I've only ever heard of stained glass being used in regards to windows, lamps, and other things where there's a bunch of different colors being cut and put together to form a design, like a mosaic. Colored glass is typically more of an overarching category that includes stained glass items, but also other things that include glass that isn't just clear and colorless (think bottles, bowls, decorative objects, etc.).
Stained glass has the colour baked in, as in the chemicals colour the glass, for example gold mixed in gives you red glass. Painted glass is the colour is painted on and then baked. Early painted glass consisted of yellow, black and clear.
My local museum focuses mainly on dinosaurs and fossils, being on the island of Portland on the Jurassic coast. So not much opportunity for re-enactments, but they do some great children’s activities.
Me, I'ld show up in those silly "T-Rex" costumes that folks wear.......
A teeny bit more than a five minute drive for me. But the concept extends past that one museum.
Oh I'm so glad it didn't end up closing! I had a trip there with uni (and a few as a tiny child) and the person we spoke with said they might have to shut
Im so lucky we live so c!ose to jarrow hall, we go all the time! Absoloutley lovely little museum ❤
8:08- drooling over that pattern welding. Beautiful.
Appease the algorithm!
Great video, as always.
I’m not to far from Castell Henllys, wonderful Iron Age settlement
...so what I'm getting here is that next time we're in the UK we should go East.
The recently-whitewashed thatched building looks like a larger, fancier, better-maintained version of the hut my great-grandmother, Ellen Breakspear, was born in.
Such a cute Spook
My husband (then fiance) brought me to Bede's world a few decades ago. It is a lovely place and I really enjoyed the visit. I hope to go back there one day to see how much it's changed.
Not a re-enactor but my armoured medieval swordfighting group had one of our annual events today and it was a good time. They feed us well and we're their big draw. There's a local jousting group that's the main draw for any of the bigger events that have the space and insurance :)
I was subscriber # 4k something, 100k is wild 😂😂 but well deserved!! One of the best channels on UA-cam hands down 🖤
I adore small museums. The people who work there are always so knowledgeable and happy to share, and they have the time to do it.
I have heard of Jarrow… it was from you. Although I am on the mail list of another anglo saxon village… oh god forget it’s name… even though I live in flippin Washington state, USA. I’ll make it there eventually… *sigh*
Excellent video! I wish that locally, I had small museums I could lend much reenacting expertise to, but the museums where I live are all focused on the 19th century onwards (well fascinating, and I can lend a bit of historical and family knowledge to that, but not reenacting; my reenactment knowledge is 12th century western european, and I'm branching out into Byzantine and Scythian stuff a bit, through my local SCA barony). But even if one's local museums aren't in your specific area of historical interest, I think everyone should go to them a hell of a lot more often. They're run on so little, and they give so much.
Reenactors at a museum bring people in the following weekend too because people go home and tell their friends "we went to a museum and they had a live sword fight!" And then people who maybe wouldn't go will go because how often do you get to see Vikings having a sword fight? That's worth a Saturday morning.
It is if the Vikings turn up a second time. Chances are they'll be rapping about pillaging in the next county.
I don't know if I'll ever go to Newcastle, but I did go to the Avalon Marshes museum recently, which is pretty cool. You can dress up as a viking or a Roman. Shields are really heavy.
Do you know of any armorers that make Anglo-Saxon helmets For reenacting. All I'm finding are pieces made in India they are not accurate at all.
Depends on your budget, ask Tod of Tod's workshop. I'd imagine he could craft you something depending on if you have the coin
ArmorySmith in Kyiv could probably do so as a commission (and their channel's worth a follow)
I'd really like to go to Jarrow Hall, but can't afford overseas travel.
Can you afford to go to a local museum and give them your money?
@@apcolleen yes I can, I have season pass.
Thanks for taking us along on your museum trip! I like the message about how reenactment groups can help the community, as well!
God, if I ever make it back to that part of England that goes on the list immediately...
Big if at that point. But still.
Neither Welsh nor viking? Heresy! 😱
Liked. Shared. Commented. Sent the algorithm off to find a hidden museum.
baby faced jimmy
Ah, Jimmy, would that I could join a medieval reenactors' group, or volunteer at a Welsh museum and invoke my Davis heritage. 🤷 Alas, I am in San Diego County, in Southern California. 🌞You'll have to do those things for both of us, I fear. I did name my daughter Gwyneth. 😁
@@whatgoesaroundcomesaround920 I'm not in the US but I suspect you can in fact join a group like SCA and invoke your Davis heritage, although the volunteering at a Welsh museum can't be helped...
@@beth12svist and SCA are D&D tropey hacks...
@@SonsOfLorgar I guess it may depend a lot on the people. I know of (as in, I internet-know) people who are in the SCA and take things quite seriously and do research... There's no SCA where I live so my impressions are based entirely on that.
We love a Jimmy out in the field moment, thanks Jimmy!!
All hail Spook!
Someone I met recently expressed very clear disdain that museums have had the nerve to ask that their reenactment group 'come and do crafts with kids, which is totally not what we do' and it really left a sour taste in my mouth. Reenactment has such incredible potential in increasing historical compassion and curiosity. I'm so glad there are also reenactors like you who seem to see the value!
My wife and I ran a LARPing group for many years, we loved doing things with the kids - we even did school events. They could wear chainmail and even get to fight (because rubber swords). The girls were vicious.
Soon they will be complaining that no one wants to participate in their hobby anymore... 🙄
I don't want to alarm anyone but you said "Beetlejuice" twice so you know what you have to be careful about.
Punching Tim Burton? Noted!
Speaking of advertising reenactment events, have you given any thought about announcing which shows you yourself are planning to go to, some time beforehand? I can see how your local followers may want to know about these things - conversely, I can also see why you *wouldn't* want to do that, not wanting to steal the show. 🙂
...maybe keep that one patrons-only?
I really hope the cats have their own social media, this one was about to get under the cloak
The museum sounds really good. I love the small working museums and the small local ones. And your right they don’t get enough help and appreciation.
Great video as always, Jimmy; thanks for sharing.
Gosh do I wish we had that kind of thing near me. Not that I have the urge to do reenacting, but the archaeology in that corner of the world is incredible. Alas, I live in a place where not only is there no archaeology to be found, nobody would care even if there was. We have a modern art museum and a science museum; the former sees more business from grown-ups, while the latter will get kids in on field trips, but neither is particularly populated (the art museum isn’t even very populated by art). I console myself with episodes of Time Team, though they do occasionally make me a bit glum that I’ll never get to see actual old things myself.
I love museums like this, always worth looking for small museums when you're traveling for something to do.
Why I don't visit, well I'm on the wrong side of the Plaint
A comment.
REPRESENT!
Oh dear... attracting tourists? Horrors!
Thanks! I’ve added Jarrow to my wishlist.
I wish we had as deep a material history here… only goes back to the Victorian era. So the reenactment isn’t nearly as fun.
Ooh that is such a pretty sword hilt
Looks like a great time!
Great, now I feel guilty for not supporting museums on the other side of the world 😢
He wasn't asking you to support those specific museums unless you were able to - he said support the ones nearest you. I'm sure there are museums on your doorstep that need your help.
Was that new sword made by Ben Abbot?
Paul Binns made the pattern welded blade and the hilt fittings are by Danegeld.
I reenact the lives of women throughout different eras for schools and especially senior adult assisted living apartment complexes. the more obscure the character the more I have to research to pull off this insane feat. What is the most fun is discovering what inspires curiosity about a stranger from another time. If you can participate in Chataquan festivals, reenactments, of living history , please do. If you see living history offered please support the organizations involved. Who is my favorite character? She's a dance mistress for the Turkish Pavillion at the 1893 Chicago World;s Fair. I can adopt an accent, wear what looks like an alien and exotic costume, and help people imagine what life was like for people and what they have in common.
thanks Jimmy, I respect and appreciate the work you do here on the "Tubes, Very best to everyone.
