Wow…If only this was available to schools during the 1970s, because i loved studying history as a child - Roman, Victorian and Industrial, and Napoleonic were my favs…
Do take note that Julius Caesar's account is an enemy account. Julius Caesar, and the rest of the Romans, were the enemies of the Germanic people. It was Chieftain Odoacer who finally defeated, and deposed, Romulus Augustulus to end the Roman Hegemony in Northern Europe. They should make a movie regarding the victory of the Germanic tribes over the Roman Empire. A movie would be awesome. The Suevi taking on the Romans. I would love to see a movie about it.
I would love to see this film. Maybe the sack of Rome in 455 and 472 could be included, although Odoacer wasn't involved in the 455 sack by the Vandals, still that would be fun to watch! The conqueror Rome brought to it's knees!
Correct. It is also propaganda designed to portray the enemies of the Empire as alien and “barbarian” - perhaps even less than human. The best response to it is the one that Tacitus attributed to Calgacus, a chieftain of the Picts, describing the “Pax Romani” - “they make a desert , and call it peace”
I LOVE channels that deal with primary sources. (long rambling comment ahead) Caesar, ever looking to model himself after Alexander the Great, used his histories to broach the cultural divide between his army and the lands they conquered (despite his Germanic ‘campaign’ being being unofficial and limited in scope). The Greeks called this practice ‘medizing’, the frowned upon act of relating with the enemy (Persians in that case). But to late republicans like Caesar who had a more expansionist idea of citizenship, it would have been an essential step to laying the groundwork for settling retired soldiers and integrating new peoples into the empire. Romans always had wives’ tales about Gauls coming in the night to steal children making noise in the fields, and so it is no wonder Caesar made such attempts to present the ‘barbarians’ he governed over as potentially amenable to Roman life. This was seen when he mentioned the Germanic magistrates holding the power of ‘life and death’ during war, this would be familiar to the Greco-Roman reader as like the Roman consular notion of ‘holding imperium’ or ‘holding fasces’, as well as the Spartan diarchic right to wage war unimpeded while in the field. A brief addendum to that Germanic ‘magisterial’ power: I think Caesar is guilty of romanticizing (for lack of a better word) what was really going on in that cultural context. As most of you are probably aware, the Germanic tribes were hospitable to a degree that would alarm most: letting strangers in their houses(!!!). That magisterium ‘right’ is the inversion of that hospitality, those who live outside the Rhineland, distant foreigners and exiles (the ‘Vogelfrei’ as would be later callled), were fair game to do anything with. The Gauls had a similar anarchic paradise but without a notion of ‘vogelfrei’ I believe, or at least, a freedom governed more by oaths than common ancestral land. It is a shame we do not have more history of pre-Roman Germania, my biggest question was what was going on deep in Scandinavia that had driven so many (yet suspiciously not enough) tribes out and into lower Europe. My crackpot theory is that there was a civil war going on with seriously powerful warriors which is why the refugees were always trying to cross the Rhine despite the danger
The first contact between Romans and Germans was before Caesar's time, when in about 100BC the Kimbri and Teutoni migrated from what is now Denmark. Even more ferocious than the Gauls, they terrified the Romans. They were only overwhelmed when they divided themselves, the Kimbri moving west to plunder Spain. The cause of their migration, possibly rising sea levels around the Jutland peninsula.
@@_--Reaper--_ Yes, it is usually written Cimbri. But the Romans would have pronounced it with a K. As they did Caesar. And they would, presumably, have got that pronunciation from the Cimbri themselves. Though we will never be sure either way.

Why is "Gaius Julius Caesar" at the beginning writing in Arabic script and not in Latin? Is this another subtle attempt to rewrite our history? Just asking.
