Would it be possible to winston draft this cube? Me and my two friends once tried a draft just the three of us, and it was kind of boring because we knew archetypes we were doing.
Professor, The Starter Cube list you linked to is not accurate. The very clip you showed of LRR playing this cube shows a Profane Procession being played. This card is not in the list within that link. The fact that every guild except for Orzhov and Azorius have 3 multicolor cards and it is missing Profane Procession makes me think there is another missing card. White is also listed as having 2 more cards than every other color. So I suspect there are a couple extras in there.
Why does everybody seem to assume that every Cube is supposed to have extremely powerful and expensive cards in it? A Cube can be anything you want it to be, composed out of any type of collection. Skill in design can turn cards of any power level into an amazing strategic experience. I'm glad to see products like the Starter Cube moving the Cube community in the right direction.
@Proton I understand that, but there can be a big difference between just playing with powerful cards, and playing with a cube designed to create an interesting strategic experience. The recent Historic Cube in Arena is a good example of bad design: it's jammed with a lot of powerful stuff, but IMO it's not actually very well designed (doesn't have much in the way of coherent deck archetypes, too many multi-symbol monocolor cards making splashing super hard, etc.). The games I played basically devolved into either bomb races or color-screw, with very few interesting strategic decisions to make during gameplay. In fairness, it was a Sealed event, so maybe drafting it would help some, but I doubt it.
My cubes focus on theme I know exactly what you mean. I always am a little embarrassed and feel like I'm packing jank even though I try and balance the cards for experience and, like I said, theme
I really like their marketing for this. Here's a great starter cube, buy it from us at a reasonable price, or here's our list if you want to tweak it and build your own.
Even if you ARE a Cube enthusiast this is a solid product if you want to play with random players at the bar or a store since all the cards are probably easy to replace if they get lost or damaged.
A re-review of the starter Cube would be interesting. Buying all 360 cards as singles in NM/EX condition currently costs ~ 38 Eur including tax and shipping. Since the current cube does afaik not contain sleeves that only leaves out the lands which are also < 10 Euro for 200 basic lands (the cube only comes with 175 basic lands). So the current cube costs you about 2x what you would pay if you just bought all the cards individually. Not a great deal in my opinion.
Considering you talk in euros, might not even be a matter of time if you got those prices from Cardmarket. The price calculation was propably based on Card Kingdom's prices themselves, which are horrid for bulk. They seem to have a minimum price, right now it's 0.35 dollars, even if the card could be bought for few cents on TCGPlayer, or GameMarket.
Even if sponsored by CK, your review was honest and thorough. It looks like a fantastic and well thought out product. I look forward to further iterations of it. As already mentioned, this is definitely a missed opportunity from WotC to put out a similar product.
Watching this video reminds me of the Cube’s predecessor: Type 4. Type 4 was a giant stack of magic cards that you drafted (just like cube) except with a few rule variations: start with 25 life and 5 cards in hand, no hand limit, one spell a turn, and infinite mana. This meant you of course had to avoid spells like Fireball or Shivan Dragon, but instants and abilities became absolutely vital. Another old school variant was Emperor. Played with at least six people (add four each increment) there would be generals (players) on each side of the emperor (also a player) and both teams would be set up this way. Teams would take their turns all at once (phase changes dictated by Emperor) and all creatures had “T:transfer control of creature to teammate sitting next to you. Lastly there was a targeting rule, where you could only target an opponent(s stuff) if there was no other opponent on that side sitting closer to you. This would mean emperors could target outer generals and their belongings but not the other emperor at the start of the game, as well as if the western general fought all the way to the opposing emperor, they still could NOT touch generals to the east, as the emperor would be in the way. Game would end after an emperor falls. I wish more people knew of these variants, ESPECIALLY emperor as the few people I know that have combined it with Commander have had great experiences. The reason I brought type 4 is that while you have to omit some cards, you get to play with other cards that were previously terrible due to high cmc or things like upkeep costs. I find variants to be the spice of magic life, and maybe others would too. Seems to be true with all the hype for Battlebond. Another game variations video would be perfect around the time of the set release...if that sort of video sounds like a good use of your time, of course. Keep up the great work!
There are people online who made the Strictly Worse cube. I wanna proxy it up and draft it but I don’t think I’d be able to fool anyone into playing it.
Is it sad that battle bond seems to have way better reprint value than modern masters for it price. Like as a draft/commander player the reprints in that set look amazing.
I've been saying WOTC should print dedicated Cube products for years. They don't have to be super powerful as long as they are well-balanced within themselves. Glad to see CK picking up the slack.
I have wanted to build a cube ever since watching your videos. I am a low budget builder though and wasn't sure what I wanted to do that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg. Last year for Father's day, my wife bought me a booster box of Conspiracy. It was my first time drafting it and I loved the experience. I pulled some, but not all, of the expensive cards in the set. I'm working on a pseudo cube for Conspiracy so I can experience that draft environment with friends without having to buy more boosters. I think I'm about $50 off from finishing.
Constructive feedback: When you explain the three archetypes you discovered and overlay cards from them on the screen, you mix up the "Blink/Flicker" and "Sacrifice Matters" cards and titles below them. Around 4:45. I hope that makes sense and wasn't rude. Thank you for your video and everything you do for the Magic community!
I really don't even play MTG anymore. The last product I bought was a couple of Commander 2016 decks. But I still watch every one of your videos for entertainment value, and this is the first product in a while that is actually tempting me to come back!
I might actually consider this. I've been wanting to make a cube with my friends, however, despite watching your videos on them, we're just kind of lost with the whole thing and if we had one to build off of it would make the process a lot easier.
Milo: The Gathering I still have no idea how to construct a cube despite watching videos and reading articles. But I could certainly swap cards out of an already constructed cube.
I'm just a random person on the internet but playing with my cube and tinkering with it is my absolute favorite part of magic. Plus there's no upkeep. Unless you keep buying new cards for it it lasts forever. I highly recommend it.
Dave Cope ditto. If you have any collection, is worth the time, especially if you like deck building or game design. Don't think you need legacy power cards to have fun!
I had a lot of fun putting my first cube together. I did a "reconstructed booster box", meaning that I used 36 rares, 108 uncommon, and 396 common. I'd heard that (at one point) mythic rares were 1:8 ratio in the rare slot, which would give me 4 mythics, but instead I went with 5 -- one for each color. My friends and I only played it once, but I had a lot of fun building it, testing it, and tweaking it. It stayed together for about six months until I started picking it apart for commander decks, and still sits in my pile of 'needs to be sorted' cards while I make the decision whether or not to rebuild it. Not only was it a fun exercise in creativity, it was also a great way to spend time with my magic collection thinking about some cards that I don't often use. Building a cube from scratch is time consuming, but worth the time investment from my point of view. I wouldn't buy the starter cube (personally) because I already have 95% of the cards from the list. But, I would recommend it to someone like my best friend who is seeking new magic experiences without wanting to spend a lot of time building "decks", and I did recommend it to a friend who just got back into MtG.
Ian Moone every player should look into cube and commander because they will eventually get burned out on constructed play and want to exclusively play one of these two formats.
Good starter cube list: Can attest first hand. I built this from cards I already had and ordered the rest for like $30. It's basically a powerful pauper cube with key uncommoms, rares and mythics to spice things up. Very well balanced and a ton of fun to draft or play sealed. Great list!!!
I've been thinking about doing a cube for about a year but was a bit overwhelmed by it all, honestly. This is 100% will be a buy from me, thanks for doing this video and all your other content. Makes being a nerd that much easier and enjoyable!
I've always wanted to have a cube but constructing has always been the most intimidating part. I didn't realize that this even existed but now I really want to buy it just as a means of playing magic affordably with my draft friends. Thanks prof
👏👏👏 great video Prof and I am thinking of building my first cube... I’ve been playing for approximately 23-24 years now and if I make this decision to move I will lose all my play groups I play with because I am thinking of moving about 18 hours away, and I can play cube with newer players and teach my kids how to play
I'm going to be a resident assistant for my University's residence life for the upcoming fall semester, this seems like the perfect way for me to interact with my residents. Thanks professor.
I have like half of the cards laying in boxes and never had a cube before. I'll get myself the remaining cards and see how much i like it and maybe pass it on to others if and when i upgrade to a new one! Thanks for the review prof!
Thanks for the video on this, while I like the idea of this, I'd have said a pauper cube would have been a better fit as a product. The gameplay would be more powerful and I'd say the price wouldn't be that much different. After building one on the channel in my budget cube build a long series it's been so much fun to create and play. Going through all the steps required to help a new player build their first cube and decisions they'd need to make. Plus let's face it pauper is a fantastic format! And then it's easily upgradable to peasant cube if you wanted to to increase the power level without too many of the cards becoming wasted.
I have wanted to start a cube for the longest time since I watched your first video describing what it is. I may one day attempt to use this cube as a starting point.
This is an awesome product! I play pauper, legacy, standard, and modern. But sometimes I want to sit down with my friends on a Friday, and have a commander esque experience without really playing commander, as it’s not exactly something I enjoy. This is something I can get, and put cards into such as sideboard cards that will make the overall cube better. I can play dig through time, treasure cruise, batterskull, Jace, and all the other fun cards, while still having a casual, solid games! I’m really excited about this, and think I will eventually get one, to not only start with, but add great cards that I will find and enjoy over time. Card kingdom hit a home run on this one!
I didn't buy anything but did check out the links... I have heard of cube, but never knew exactly what cube was for awhile now. As a player since 1995 I have a respectable collection spanning all sets of magic. Your video sold me on building a cube. Now I just need to sit down and sift through thousands of cards. Pain in the ass, but worth it in the end. Thanks, and respect Professor!
there are many sites that are pretty decent and can help you build it like for example cubetutor.. look at some of the profs videos he mentions several cube sites.. but there are other youtubers also showing these sites and showing cube building.. there are so many cube lists out their^^..
I would love WotC to make something like this as an official product. Make it $99.99, have 360 cards with some good reprints in there and good internal balance along with plenty of basics... I'd buy it.
Hey Proff, I love the idea of an EDH cube and have been looking to get one going but am having a lot of trouble finding reliable "how to get started" strategies for designing a commander cube. While there is a bunch of overlap between normal and EDH cubes I can not find any good content specifically regarding EDH cubes and would love to hear from a person who knows a fair bit of cube. I think a video would be sweet but even just some tips and tricks would be stellar. Keep up the awesome content either way, love what you do
I’ve been toying with casual cubes for 2 years and had some fun with it but never settled on one I liked. This gave me a template to go by, so I looked through the list, pulled all the cards in my collection that goes in there and then matched as many of the missing ones with similar cards in terms of type, cost and impact I could. Bought the rest as singles and I’m really looking forward to trying it out. You can even upgrade it over time if you really enjoy the archetypes. Just replace a few cards with better ones at the same time and get better non-basics like scry lands or whatever your budget allows.
Love your review videos one of my friends recently built a modern cube it's so much fun i might just pick this up and tweak it a little bit it's a great start
I've watched a few of these Cube videos and was able to go to Card Kingdom, see their list and go, "hmm, I have many of those cards" and built my first Cube from that list. I had maybe 2/3-3/4 of the cards listed and then used comparable cards to fill out the missing gaps. Now I just need for COVID to end so I can use it with friends!
Ok, I'm a limited/draft enthusiast, my very first build in MTG was a cube and I'd say this looks good. The Pauper Cube of Adam Styborskis (wich I would say is quite better than this one at first sight) is often offered as one of the best ways to start having a cube and this looks similar enough but with interesing non-pauper cards such as wraths, legends and such. In value terms, there's not many expensive cards but if you want to build one, in shipping costs you will likely spend as much or more money for this particular one. I would go with another list for a begginer's cube but doesn't look bad.
My buddy and I made our cube out of a bunch of our extras. The only money it really cost was for the sleeves. This is my favorite format, I wish more people would give it a chance.
Its an genius way to use your old trash cards that never see play, a good cube doesnt need crazy power levels. I have a high power cube and several not too different from real draft cubes
This looks like it may just be the perfect product for me. I love limited and don't own a cube myself but have been curious about cube. I rarely get to play with anyone and when I do I almost always have to teach them with the card kingdom battle decks which are awesome but don't teach them how to build a deck. Plus I get tired of playing the same decks and I wanna brew myself sometimes without braking the bank.
FYI, not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but the archetype breakdown portion of the video has an error where the key card images and archetypes are backwards for blink/flicker and sacrifice matters cards see 4:50 in the vid.
in the best way of saying it, like as a Good thing. This truly is a genius way for a business to be able to move cards that arent worth a lot, bulky cards but arent junk enough to be considered bulk.
yes it is, for them it is a means to get rid of bulk but for the consumer it is not about the value of the cards but the convenience and the starting point playing cube.. so in the end it is a win-win.. and since they offer the deck list for the cube you know what you get and can even decide to rebuild it buying cards wherever you like.. so fair enough I must say.
a friend of mine makes cube to be very close to a real pack(only taking out useless jank cards) and uses blocks to make cubes, even combining two different blocks with 8 players can be fun too, an 8 player Ravnica block and RTR block was a very fun cube experience because most of the packs felt like a regular pack. i feel i had the most fun with that way to cube so when i make my own i wanna make it as close to real drafting while cutting the jank cards, i love the traditional cube decks but i found only the more serious players can enjoy it and the casual friends who play have a tough time knowing what to draft.
@@cheesydelite6532 for the most part, debating if I want the fake Unset Unsanctioned. And if I'll get the hascon promos or holiday promos Edit: but for the most part, yes. I even have full art lands from the Amonket block
The professor was wrong here on one important point. Players with an existing cube should still buy this. I have a cube already and i bought this one because of a couple reasons. The first reason is that the themes in this cube are probably very different than a powered up cube thus it would provide a different game experience. Secondly, I wanted to be able to take my cube down to the local game store and be able to have a draft with whomever happened to be there even if they were total strangers. The fact that these cards are inexpensive means that i don’t have to worry about any coming up missing. Therefore i can play more games of cube because i would never let random people i don’t know play with my personal cube that has dual lands and other reserve list cards. Great buy!
My old cube was assembled of nothing but commons and uncommon. In about to start a new cube. I feel I can easily build a cube without spending much money because I have a large collection. I think its great for anyone to build their own if they have a large collection
I'd love this but the 50$USD on shipping alone to Canada, resulting in a 200$ cube is hard to take :/ Great to see a review of it though since I've been looking at it for a while!
This looks wonderful! I have always found playing at my LGS or with my local friends to be disheartening as they have often shown to have extremely powerful decks that are more win focused than play. It’s sad but understandable that they can’t ship sealed product internationally or I would save and buy this in a heart beat. Perhaps I’ll visit the Seattle HQ next year and see if I can pick one up, this looks like literally endless fun at a nicely balanced level.
I'm thinking I might build my first cube as a peasant cube to keep the cost down and the power level of the cards more even. That is, if I ever get around to planning it all out. It's a pretty big task to figure out all the colors and archetypes.
you will find a lot of "budget" cubes on sites like cubetutor ..etc.. while your approach is good, there are more then enough budget rares and mythics that could be playeable in such a way^^.. just make something fun;) these templates from these sites might help so check it out.
To the people in the comments: why are you complaining about the power level of the cube, it's self contained. And being sponsored by CK doesn't mean he's a shill.
This is a very nice product but I would really like a gameplay stream/video of people playing this cube. Along with it showing off what players can do with the cube it would also be helpful to show new players in groups that haven't played much limited.
As I said in this video, you can watch a gameplay stream of Loading Ready Run as they draft then play the Starter Cube here: www.twitch.tv/videos/262924930
Now all we need is a Video or some other similar form of Media with suggestions for expanding the cube, or even Cube Expansion Boxes, so people can quickly and easily get their cube to larger sizes without having to do any work themselves! Really I want a cube, and will likely be buying this once I get the spare 100 to spend, the issue is whenever I mention anything happening I always struggle to have enough activities to entertain the 10+ people that come to my Birthday or other such gatherings. It also appeals to the laziness in me to have say the 360 Base and Like two 90 Card Expansions to bulk up the size. In my eyes its easier to Edit an existing 540 Cube than it is to Slowly Bulk up an existing 360 cube.
4:45 Oh no! The portion that talks about blink/flicker has Sacrifice on the bottom, and the part that's about sacrifice has Blink/Flicker along the bottom.
Prof, your video has mistake when you are explaining the archetype. The blink flicker subtitle below the cards are switched with sacrifice. Otherwise, great video!

Great video, Prof. Thanks a bunch for reviewing this!!!
Also, around 4:50 the "sacrifice" and "blink/flicker" titles were swapped.
Thanks prof
This looks like a great product! Im relatively new to magic and don't own a cube yet so this starter cube looks like a great stepping stone.
Thanks professor.
loved this cube. started with it a built it into my own personal flair from it's foundation.
New TCC vid on my birthday? Best of all, it's based on what me and my friends have been itching to try for a while. Thanks Prof. C:
This channel is amazing, I can't get enough of your videos and I don't even know how to play MTG!
wow this is awesome, headed right over to card kingdom with your link and bought one, thanks prof
The quality of these videos is just absolutely insane. I am in love with this channel
Thank you!
You're very welcome. I just bought all the sleeves to build my first cube because of your videos. I also went to Cardkingdom/tcc!!!
I have wanted to start a cube for the longest time since I watched your first video describing what it is. I may one day attempt to use this cube as a starting point.
Thank you professor for your transparency! Always thankful for your videos!
I'd buy it.
This product looks PERFECT for me. Once I have the spare change, I am definitely picking this up. Thanks prof!
What a cool product, I'm super tempted. Thanks for highlighting this, Prof!
I appreciate your honesty. Ive been wanting to make a cube, and a starter Cube would be amazing. And for such a cheap price, I just might have to.
Just replace a few cards with better ones at the same time and get better non-basics like scry lands or whatever your budget allows.
thanks proffessor! i will be buying this, i have a few friends that want to start playing, and this is a great way to get them ready to try drafting.
Love your review videos one of my friends recently built a modern cube it's so much fun i might just pick this up and tweak it a little bit it's a great start
Never even heard of half the products you review on here, great channel!
I'd be very interested in a "Upgrades to the Starter Cube" video!
My buddy and I made our cube out of a bunch of our extras. The only money it really cost was for the sleeves. This is my favorite format, I wish more people would give it a chance.
What a genius way to get rid of trash from the last 4 years
Its an genius way to use your old trash cards that never see play, a good cube doesnt need crazy power levels.
I'm the person who stopped playing, but this sounds wonderful. I may have to bust this out with my family soon :)
FYI, not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but the archetype breakdown portion of the video has an error where the key card images and archetypes are backwards for blink/flicker and sacrifice matters cards see 4:50 in the vid.
I bought the Game Nights 2018 set and put all the cards together for a cube, it works and plays well.
Heard from a friend about cubes, nice to see what all the fuss is about (found this video after checking out academy)
in the best way of saying it, like as a Good thing.
I'm new to magic and I'm defiantly getting one of these, exactly what I was looking for.
a friend of mine makes cube to be very close to a real pack(only taking out useless jank cards) and uses blocks to make cubes, even combining two different blocks with 8 players can be fun too, an 8 player Ravnica block and RTR block was a very fun cube experience because most of the packs felt like a regular pack. i feel i had the most fun with that way to cube so when i make my own i wanna make it as close to real drafting while cutting the jank cards, i love the traditional cube decks but i found only the more serious players can enjoy it and the casual friends who play have a tough time knowing what to draft.
Unstable, Unhinged, Unglued cube. Uncube. Haven't played it yet. Waiting on super secret tech and to buy sleeves.
did you end up finishing it?
@@cheesydelite6532 for the most part, debating if I want the fake Unset Unsanctioned. And if I'll get the hascon promos or holiday promos
Edit: but for the most part, yes. I even have full art lands from the Amonket block
You got the blink and sacrifice matters footers the wrong way round. :)
I was just binge watching your videos and now you've uploaded. Spledid timing Prof!
I love the idea and will definitely consider buying this product as my first cube
This disclaimer of how card kingdom gets no say in the reviews but sponsors the channel anyway makes me want to purchase cards from card kingdom.
For those complaining about the price. A cube is endless fun, you could sell one standard competitive deck and upgrade this one. Great value overall!
Thankyou Professor for making me love cube you gave me my fav format ❤️
Great buy!
Looks like i'll pick this up! Never had a single magic card and i'd like to make some fun themed decks.
There needs to be more products like this. There's so many possibilities with cube builds
My old cube was assembled of nothing but commons and uncommon. In about to start a new cube. I feel I can easily build a cube without spending much money because I have a large collection. I think its great for anyone to build their own if they have a large collection
I'd love this but the 50$USD on shipping alone to Canada, resulting in a 200$ cube is hard to take :/
Great to see a review of it though since I've been looking at it for a while!
I appreciate your genuine honesty
Helped me make up my mind, Thanks for all the help!
0:49 HE SAID IT. Two more chances...
Cube is wonderful, I love it as a format. I just wish I could get more people IRL to play. I haven't played my cube since last year.
When you showed cards as examples, you mixed blink/flicker with sacrifice
The text in the archetypes is switched in sacrifice matters and blink matters
Great video Prof, keep up the good work!!!
This appears to be an excellent starting point for a Commander collection for new players.
Wait, so I can support you just by looking at the website? Also thanks for another honest and amazing review
5:10 - Prof deserves an Oscar for not laughing in the middle of that.
The best magic the gathering channel on youtube!!
Awesome, I love seeing new products like this!
A commander version of this would be awesome as well.
A commander cube? That sounds amazing
Tolarian Community College Sorry about that I was listening while driving again.
And its out of stock Now that I have the money T.T
4:45 Oh no! The portion that talks about blink/flicker has Sacrifice on the bottom, and the part that's about sacrifice has Blink/Flicker along the bottom.
Awesomeness as always my friend keep it up
Prof, your video has mistake when you are explaining the archetype. The blink flicker subtitle below the cards are switched with sacrifice. Otherwise, great video!
