    I was surprised when I saw my coleus plant sprout because I also grow chia in my garden and thought it was a chia seedling, they look identical, but once I saw the colors I knew it was coleus!

      Who knows....perhaps We can get some Chia-Coleus cross pollination going!!! Thanks for the comment!!

    I planted around 40 from seed. I am in zone 5. How big will these get by first frost? Height width?

    • @Jimswholiestofcoleus
      @Jimswholiestofcoleus  6 років тому

      Industen Hi...Height will depend on a few factors..... In their native Tropical Areas Coleus may grow 4ft + tall.
      Zone 5 is obviously a shorter Season....so your Coleus may not grow as tall....Also how much heat and humidity your growing season is affects growth.
      Mature Coleus thrive in hot/ humid 70°-100° temps some withstand full sun...others require part sun& shade.
      One last detail is WHEN did you plant your seeds......
      Follow along....check my older You tube videos for pointers....I also have a FB page. THANKS FOR FOLLOWING!!

    Mine have been planted a month ago and look like your smallest ones...any idea why they are so small? Could it be temperature?

    • @Jimswholiestofcoleus
      @Jimswholiestofcoleus  3 роки тому

      Hi Kaci....Hard question to answer without more info. But common mistakes made are burying Coleus seeds.....they need light to germinate so they should be dropped ontop of moist soil.
      Also how did u plant them?? In pods, Regular Soil?? Also Yes Temperatures must be around 70°-75° for them to germinate. Also if you're using a seed warming mat discontinue using it once they germinate. Continued Heat mats will actually cause the germinations to slow and almost stop growing. Your soil needs to stay moist not saturated ... Hope this helps.

    • @TheKcdotz
      @TheKcdotz 3 роки тому

      @@Jimswholiestofcoleus they are in a seed starting tray. I did bury them a bit more than what ive read but they look good like healthy seedlings getting taller but from what ive seen they should atleast have second set of leaves by now (a month) im also misting the soil every morning until its wet...by the next day the edges are dryer so i think the moisture should be ok...

    Hello, thanks for your great video, where do you purchase the nursery pots in bulk from?

    • @Jimswholiestofcoleus
      @Jimswholiestofcoleus  5 років тому

      www.Dollartree.com just register but It may not necessary to create an account. TOP LEFT drop down to Seasons and Occasions- Garden Supplies- Pots and Planters....You can buy 1 -1000+ and have them shipped to a nearby Dollartree or to your home.

    Where do you buy your galvanized/tin containers? They are a nice companion to the plants. Thanks!

    • @Jimswholiestofcoleus
      @Jimswholiestofcoleus  5 років тому

      I buy them at the Dollar tree stores. They dont have them until Spring. I usually order online www.dollartree.com

    • @Jimswholiestofcoleus
      @Jimswholiestofcoleus  5 років тому

      Also they may not restock them...I'm hoping they do. Only other place available is thru wholesaler Chinese company bulk sales of like 5,000 units which is where Dollar tree buys them I believe. Will have to wait until Late Winter early Spring to see if they list them on their site or restock there shelves. I believe whatever they sell it will either be these exact or similar pots as they fly off the shelf.

    Hi Jim! I am so thankful for your videos, I am trying coleus from seeds for the first time. I have a seed starting tray and in each pod I planted about 8-10 seeds. I think all of the seeds germinated because I have a ton of seedlings in each pod. When thinning out your plants do you ever put the seedlings you pull out into new dirt? I guess I hate the idea of throwing seedlings out.

    • @Jimswholiestofcoleus
      @Jimswholiestofcoleus  6 років тому

      Leslie Putnam Firstly....THANK YOU!! THANKS for following along....You will find yourself even more excited as they grow!! FOLLOW ALONG and I will give pointers along the way!
      As for thinning out your pods... I grow so many....I don't replant them but they probably would take...as long as they have a good root and your careful.
      I know how you feel....discarding them...but I thin out the sickly or comparatively smaller ones to ensure a strong plant!! Good Luck!!

    • @Jimswholiestofcoleus

      Anna....no worries. I have made many mistakes over the years. If you drastically overseeded the pods then once they germinate....pick out a few to lessen the crowd. If you buried your seeds unknowingly and they don't germinate.... then remoisten the pods a bit and drop the seeds ON TOP and press down. Cover with a clear dome or plastic and gently loosen it off on the edges after about 2 weeks once you see them sprout. Keep the pods moist until they get established. I have plenty of guidance videos you can watch or just ask. Good luck you'll do fine!!

    What causes the coleus leaf to curl/fold? (my plant is about just 30cm in height with 3 main branches, the leaves in one branch starts folding)

    • @Jimswholiestofcoleus
      @Jimswholiestofcoleus  6 років тому

      Jai GG Generally plant leafs curl when they are cold....I assume your Coleus are still young germinations like my video? They also " reach" for sunlight if they aren't getting proper lighting. Also try rotating your trays around if you see plants " leaning" towards one side which is natural. Do that throughout growing cycles.

    • @Jimswholiestofcoleus
      @Jimswholiestofcoleus  6 років тому +1

      Jai GG If you feel your young plants can't get proper warmth buy a seed tray warming mat

    • @Jimswholiestofcoleus
      @Jimswholiestofcoleus  6 років тому

      Jai GG Lastly if your finding only a few of your plants are experiencing leaf curl....it could be a sign of an unhealthy plant...or a virus. If it's only a select few Coleus and you have others....then remove this plant.

    • @jaigg5932
      @jaigg5932 6 років тому

      Thanx Jim for the replies, well just leaves of one branch curls and I think its sunlight problem. will try rotating the pot.

      Jai GG I always rotate plants as I see them naturally lean towards one direction....its good for plant roots development too
