A limitation with gameplay in Sea of Thieves. Both pirates, and naval officers looking for prizes in war; wanted to capture ships (with their cargo and prisoners) that could still float. Sinking ships was considered an option of last resort. A high valued capture could make a naval officer rich for their whole life. A captured ship could even be pressed into service as a Naval vessel itself if in good condition, expanding the strength of the force. Of course SoT though doesn't really have a gameplay option for that so ships get sunk instead. At least treasure floats in this game.
