    I miss that kinda tennis, has almost become forgotten. I was an Agassi fan so usually cheered against Sampras, but i appreciate his game more now. So refreshing to see a guy barely taking any time on serve. And that half volley touch at 1:57, crazy

    When that swashbuckling caution to the wind tennis was still played. Love it!❤

    my god here Safin was as calm and cool as cucumber,no signs of any anger or agression...if he really could had kept that kind of composure through out his career ..I bet he wud have been for lot many more titles ..but unfortunately he only got 2 grand slams ...actually this guy was well worth for more

      Most everyone would have said between 4-10. He had alot of injuries; could never string 3 years in a row injury free. Get rid of Federer or injuries, and you have minimum 4 majors I think. I figured him for six.

      Not for Federer and injuries, him and Kuerten would've dominated the early to mid 2000's

      Huge shame that Safin with his massive serves was not able to have the consistency to win more. He definitely deserved way more titles (closer to 10 I'd say). Such massive talent but he lacked the consistency.

    Safin reminded me a little bit of Boris Becker. Took the world by storm and was very good very early. But never maxed out on his potential and got destracted by what the world can offer a rich, young man. And all of a sudden there are other players who can do what you can do. You should work even harder but you are too used to win on talent alone.

      true. lacked discipline. probably needed a coach who could handle his personality better and keep him focused. beat the best in sampras and federer for his 2 slams. his service motion was pure

    My dad worked for Newsweek back then so me and my brother got to go with him to see this game. I was 11, embarassed to say Marat Safin my "sexual awakening", I got close to him after the game after the press conference and couldn't say two words to him, got an autograph though. Good memories.

    Safin's movement looks sluggish compared to the defense I'm used to seeing on today's tour. Still, an incredible ball striker. So clean. Safin and Nalbandian, back then, were both so fun to watch hit the ball.

      Safin was also 6'4" and hustling after Pete Sampras volleys on a fast court. Almost every modern player would look clumsy in those conditions.

      @louisedyhlen3234 Safin's build is bigger, and back in those days you didn't expect a guy that size to be so fast. Now with improvements in training and sports nutrition, and slower courts, it's more common.

    Saffin's returns were just too big for Sampras. Also, Sampras came in too often on nothing just bluffs. He came in on wrong balls, pressured to do so because he would not live with Saffin at the back of the court. In a way Saffin ended Sampras's career. Of course, this was the highly motivated Saffin. Saffin's motivation would desert him frequently, and permanently after 2005, and only make sporadic appearances after that. Saffin was good enough to take a slam or a few from Federer. He was far superior to Sampras, who had no answer to Saffin's blend of power, ground strokes, returns, and passing shots. Saffin had one of the best double handed backhands ever. Just the discipline was lacking.

      I think Pete could take Marat in his heyday of 93-97, when he was much more all-court in his approach to the game. The problem I see with his performances post 2000 was that following his back injury that forced him to pull out of the '99 Open, he lost alot of mobility and stamina, and was forced to develop a heavily serve-reliant game to win matches.

    • @jschaeffer5549
      @jschaeffer5549 6 років тому +1

      @Farid plus the fact that safin was at his prime here and sampras was past his prime in this match

    • @Mzee1084
      @Mzee1084 6 років тому +1

      Sampras was from an older era that wasn't very relevant anymore. Poly strings, larger racket frames, slowing of surfaces all left Sampras behind.

    • @farid1406
      @farid1406 6 років тому +5

      I think Pete's game and athleticism would have been just fine on grass and hard today. You have to remember this was the man that was so utterly dominant as a server at Wimbledon that they decided to slow down the grass. Probably the only past player I can see being #1 and winning slams in this era.

    • @jschaeffer5549
      @jschaeffer5549 6 років тому +5

      @Mzee-"larger racket frames".Actually in the sampras era the racquet frames were smaller NOT larger.With the exception of agassi and chang most players played with a mid to mid size plus.String technology werent as good back then either
