Interesting lecture. In ww2 Germany had advanced nerve agent gases such as seron which was far more lethal than the stockpiles of allied nations. Churchill repeatedly wanted gas attacks on German cities and even experimented with anthrax bombs, luckily a full attack never took place, as the German retaliation would’ve been extremely hard to counter balance…. The German high command could’ve doused western France in seron nerve gas and rendered it uninhabitable and moved their divisions east to better counter the soviets offensive. However high command and the man himself adolf objected to this possibility
My understanding of Churchill and gas in WW2 is that he would have potentially used it if the Germans had crossed the Channel, by spraying it on the beaches. However, as for use after that, I believe the stockpiled mustard gas and anthrax bombs would only have been released for use if the Germans used chemical warfare first. Churchill even issued a warning in 1942 that if Germany used Chemical or Biological weapons against the Soviets, then the UK would respond in kind.
interesting talk (my gt gt grandfather was gassed in the Ypres area in oct/nov 1917 and 50% disabled), just a shame the speaker snores when breathing in........
As a passionate reader/historian I have read many now out of print books by WW1 veterans, in two of those it clearly states that the first use of gas was by the French against the Germans, and not by the Germans against the allies. !
