Mark, we use your Aspect Finch Tube Feeder with 8 perches. We keep it filled with Black Tie, and it's covered in Goldfinches daily. It's great for cleaning and keeping the feed fresh by flipping the feeder and filling from the bottom, as you showed. Just ensure you're holding to top securely! Thanks for another great video!
Mark, I prefer the tube feeder as do my finches. Any tube feeder that has "metal" poles for the birds to rest, please wrap "cloth" electrical tape around metal poles. In northern regions it can be sub-zero for weeks/months at a time. Think of this in fridge conditions. Put you bare hand on a steel pole, doesn't feel so good. Please share.
Cool didn't know about the drop out base all my tube feeder are top load. If they wear out I be sure to get bottom load feeders. I think my house finches have run off the gold finches because the nyjer seed is next to the Saffron feeder.. When I had gold finches I didn't feed with saffron only a nyjer seed feeder. How I have a ton of house finches feeding on the saffron feeder. Next year I will separate them. I can have two feeder per pole. My question is will the sunflower hearts also attract the house finches? I want to have a separate area just for the gold finches. House finches seem to bully other birds except for cardinals. You could say its a pecking order. Other birds still feed but they have to wait where as the gold finches plain left my yard.
My experience is that the best feeder is the spiral. I have the aspect and its great but the ability on the spiral for the bird to pick a location is what seems to appeal to them most. It is fun to watch the Aspect because some times the finches will feed upside down. I had a big problem with Starlings until I bought a cage for my aspect that had fairly large feeding holes. That worked a treat since only the finches could get in the holes to reach the feeder.
I no longer use the upright finch feeder whether it be sock or tube since the house finches took that over last winter and the goldfinches didnt come around. So I switched to only upside down feeders for goldfinches and they are back. I want to try some sunflower chips in the same upside down feeder, not sure that will work or if they will have trouble getting that seed out thru the small oval holes. Might need to grind that seed down for that to work.
I have the old style tube feeder that I’ve been using for years. thistle. Are my favorite New to your show really enjoy it Mark needless to say I love my finches.
Mark, how do a get one of your favorite Golden Finch tube bird feeders with the removable base for rotating the seed ? I may also want to buy one of the spiral feeders also...Thanks
You did not mention the Brome Squirrel Buster Finch Feeder. What do you think of that one? I have several of their regular feeders for black oil sunflower seed, and they are excellent feeders. I have no regrets in purchasing four of them, and I would purchase again if needed. I have not tried their Finch feeder, though. If you do not like their Finch feeder, why not? Too cumbersome to clean compared to the Aspect?
@@user-lz6dm5lk9y I do like their finch feeder, especially for fine sunflower kernels. It holds a good amount of seed but I find that the Classic works pretty much the same.
Aspects has several Finch feeders. Which one is best? Which one is Mark holding? They also make a 12" dome that is supposed to fit over all of their Finch feeders to protect from rain and snow. Anyone recommend the dome?
@@user-lz6dm5lk9y The feeder I grabbed was the Aspects Small Nyjer (finch) tube. It is the smallest finch feeder they make. I use the medium Finch feeder at home. Their Tube Top hood is the best hood I have ever used at keeping out rain and snow.
I ordered the medium size. Amazon delivered it this morning. I was also looking at the hood or dome you mentioned. The only reason I did not order it was I wondered whether or not a fairly strong wind would dislodge it from the feeder and make it blow off sideways and possibly bring down the feeder with it. Have you had that happen ever?
@@MarksBackyardBirds The Finches are totally ignoring the thistle seed, so I am not going to worry about a dome for the feeder. So disappointed. I thought they would go after that seed.
Mark, or anyone using this finch feeder do you get a lot of wasted food? I have a feeder that is a tube feeder, always have birds but they go through a lot of food. And what I have found is this feeder has a lot of the food is on the ground, wasted.
Hi Sherry, What seed are you using? If you are using Nyjer or a mix that contains Nyjer, remember that seed has a hull that the birds have to crack open. The hulls end up on the ground underneath. The other factor is that the seed is so small, it is harder for companies to clean out the empty seeds. Birds know the difference in seeds that have a heart and don't so they drop the empty seeds when the pick them up. Fine sunflower kernels are pretty much waste free.
I just bought this bird feeder a week ago and I LOVE IT! You should look into it and maybe sell it at your place. Since the first day it been pack with finches all over it. If they are the Fine Sunflower kernels they should fit fine. The exception is when they get wet, they can swell. Medium or coarse kernels do not work.

Just a quick question are gold finches attracted to the color yellow in the winter ?
No real evidence to support that. The yellow feeders are for the customers really.
