- Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Walt Disney's character BEFORE Mickey Mouse, almost got the spotlight again in a new cartoon! An Oswald series was rumored to be in development, but now we have some bad news. Will the original Mickey Mouse character ever get another chance?
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit made a name for himself as one of Walt Disney's earliest cartoon characters. While he's disappeared for a number of decades, he made a general comeback beginning in the 2000s! Whether it be in Disney's Epic Mickey games or Friday Night Funkin' mods, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit has been getting a ton of attention recently. This may end up leading to an official Oswald project sometime soon for Disney!

Oswald is the literal pillar of the whole Disney company, without him Mickey won't exist and neither the corporation would even last! He deserves to be always part of the statues Disney randomly creates
I remember recently reading about him in a LIFE magazine about Disney and how he lost the rights to him early on.

@@walkerphillips2818 Unfortunately he only served as Alice's partner in Alice Comedies, despite his enthusiasm there were still MANY cartoon cats and he wasn't as popular as Oswald was. Oswald served as the basis for Ub and Disney to create Mortimer, currently named after Walt's wife as Mickey. Finally, I have to add that there are even many similarities between the Oswald and Mickey short films.
This really hurts. I grew up playing Epic Mickey and the history behind Oswald and his decline always fascinated me.
The epic mickey games were such a big part of my childhood. I hope one day we will see a remake!

I can see an Oswald cartoon coming out on Disney Plus in the future. Walt Disney tried to make animated adaptations of the Snow Queen as well as Beauty And The Beast and some other Fairy Tales which never happened until long after he died Good ideas never die at Disney.

Man, people really need to remember that not every mod isn't originally from fnf.
I think a good amount of people know that. It’s the same with Skid and Pump. A lot of people know they’re originally from Sr Pelo, and a few think they’re originally from FNF.

I say you don’t need to give him his own show, just make him the fourth member of the band, heck do the same with Ortesia, and while you’re at it, focus on other classic Mickey characters like Horace Horsecollar and Clara Cluck. The original universal oswald doesn't exist anymore sense they already take the copyright down by Disney in 2006

There is a lot more to the story of Oswald than talked about in this video. Walt was betrayed by his partner who took Oswald, over half the artist for their company, and the majority of their clients.
That’s not even close to being true. Ub Iwerks never did that crap to Walt Disney, and in fact, stayed on to create Mickey with Walt. It was actually Charles Mintz, who had distributed the Oswald cartoons at Universal who took Oswald and half of Disney’s artists & employed, and majority of their clients. He stole Walt’s employees and wanted Walt in his control. Mintz was a greedy asshole.

Ub LEFT Disney in 1930, but it was probably because of creative differences, and not because he stole Oswald or anything. Ub Iwerks also took part in creating Mickey Mouse with Walt Disney.

What SonicShadow is saying is right. Charles Mintz was the one who took rights with Oswald, Ub Iwerks had no part in any of that and continued being with Walt for awhile since he refused to leave.
I didnt know he was getting a cartoon and now I'm sad cause that would be so cool!

Funny, just the other day I was speculating why it had no news. I came to the recent conditions cancelling it and here it is, cancelled. I really was excited for this and I feel Oswald needs so much more love than FNF mods flooding UA-cam.
Better to have Oswald becoming a public domain. He will start entering in public domain in 2023 and then anyone can use him for free without paying royalities. Or make fan animations, fan comics and fan fictions. I'm working on Oswald fan comics for next year.
Does this mean we are getting a Epic Mickey remake? If we are, then I'm buying it in a heartbeat.

I agree with you Vail, also you had to mention Oswald's mod in FNF? I don't know if that was worth mentioning, but to be fair the mod did got some people's attention and us remembering our lucky rabbit. There's still hope, Oswald still has chance for Disney.
Give Mickey's brother the love he deserves instead of being abandoned in Epic Mickey like being Disney's Shadow the Hedgehog and soon becoming Disney's Tails (cuz his ears spin like how Tails' tails spins) and giving him a Disney+ series that just went in the bin, Poor rabbit :(
Nah, I feel like Shadow isn't abandoned. I know of at least 3 more characters that are way more abandoned.
There's Mighty and Ray, who actually got a new appearance in Sonic Mania Plus but up until that there was only a missing poster of them in Generations. There's also Cream the Rabbit, who I'm not even sure about.
The closest we got to this was epic mickey cutscenes

1927 (When Oswald was born/Created): Walt Disney brought life and love for Oswald, The lucky rabbit enjoyed his life. Seeing a world of happiness and joy for the 28 episodes he had.
1928 (When Disney lost the rights to keep Oswald and when Mickey was born):
Walt Disney had a disputful argument in the studio as Oswald watched and heard the argument with pure confusion and sadness. Walt Disney had let go of him, Oswald sat in the darkness, there with sadness watching Mickey Mouse get all the fame that he should of been getting.
Fast Foward 78 years later..
2006 (When Disney gained the rights to Oswald again):
Oswald sat there in Sadness again until he saw a bright light of Disney gaining the rights to him again. The rabbit smiled in tears of joy and hope knowing he wasn't really forgotten.
2021: Oswald was excited for his new life, but when Disney cancelled his show on Disney+ the rabbit sighed in despair. But with the love fans giving him, Oswald didn't give up and still hopes for his fame to get back to him.
I got so excited when I saw new Oswald news. Then I realized. Why Disney.

I'm from the Philippines and I love Oswald! I went to disney land a few years back and one of my treasured items that I love to this day is my limited tough luck oswald portrait. It cost an arm and leg but I love him so much that I bought it. It has a cel painting, a post card and a pin. I wonder how much it cost nowadays XD

I came up with an idea a while ago for a 3D animated movie called the adventures of randimation: Randimation was a character for a cancelled animated movie. Together with the help of the forgotten Disney characters: Oswald the lucky rabbit and brave little toaster. He must go across the Disney universe to restore his animated movie.
He really deserves more attention and love from Disney than he’s been getting

I thought you were talking about the newly discovered shorts that have been posted to UA-cam recently: "High Up", "Empty Socks", and "The Ole Swimmin' Ole" were all posted this year, and a slightly more complete version of the "Neck and Neck" segment from Japan. None of them have had a modern score written for them yet.
I also was hoping to hear whether there's any truth to the rumor that a trademark troll was sitting on the Oswald Rabbit trademark because Disney hadn't done anything with it in so long...
