When Diamond Head first released Lightning To The Nations 40 years ago in 1980, few could have predicted the importance it would carry with regards to heavy metal’s new wave and sound. Stacked and packed with riffs, Lightning To The Nations would be one of the prime catalysts for a movement known as the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM).
Re-imagined, re-recorded and re-born in 2020, Diamond Head’s forthcoming 40-year celebration of their genre-defining debut album is a scintillating shot of fresh metal energy. With Lightning To The Nations 2020 listeners experience not only the rare phenomenon of crisp, fresh and new sounding songs with very little of the obvious original elements altered, they will also be treated to four supreme cover versions
Recorded over several sessions between various locations, from France to band members’ home studios, Lightning To The Nations 2020 central hub was Andersen’s Raw Sound Studios in London. It’s where Brian and Abbz did the guitars in February and March of this year, and then with the COVID-19 chaos striking, Andersen worked on the album between April and July, with Tatler’s watchful ear inspecting final mixes and tweaks in early August before sending off to mastering at Metropolis Studios in London.
This edition of the album sees Diamond Head spreading their wings and creating the heaviest of homages to Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest, Deep Purple… And Metallica.

Father of Metallica
More rocking than modern Metallica
Ummm... wait a second...
@@Jabberstax agreed 👍🏻
More like the adopted son of the father of Metallica
@@stef2465as much as i hate to say it, if diamondhead and Lemmy had a son Metallica would be it.
Right there at the birth of the NWOBHM, still doin' it and sounding better than ever. Five stars, thumbs up, added to the playlist.
Oh my god that bass tone is fucking amazing. So dirty, so heavy.
Something about that solo is just the purest metal
At 3:45 this has always been one of my favorite all time riffs and it sounds ever better on this version.
Ah, they just stole that from The Offspring anyway.
X-D
@@AJ-on-youtube are u joking that riff was from the 80s ... do some basic music timeline research
@@evildiamond6247 (that was, in fact, a joke).
@@AJ-on-youtube nice joke btw it triggered me 😂 LOL
Dude on of my favs ever, its epic.
This is when old rock metal come back..BRILIANT DIAMOND HEAD...PERFEKT SOUND
Absolutely Perfect Sound

Im sorry, trivium. But anyone who felt the need to be the new metallica missed a big chunk of the equation, by not appreciating the missing link between black sabbath and tallica, DIAMONDHEAD. Always heard it, but this, now more than ever. Someone said here, FATHER OF METALLICA.
I think the bands they covered (Deep Purple, Zeppelin and Priest) were more direct influences on their sound than Sabbath at the time. No disrespect intended to Sabbath, the true fathers of metal.
"Mommy, where's Fluffy?" Now I see how my fav Garage Inc. songs should sound! This is true gold. Thanks to every band member and other people who made this recording possible! Can't stop listening to it like I'm 12 yo again.
Your Not alone Mate ..
This Fucking Rocks 🤘
3:46
this was meant to be played on the Justice album, man that harmony is absolute choice.
40+ years, and this entire album STILL holds up.
RIDE THE LIGHTNING TO THE NATIONS
Like a fine whiskey
Gets better with age
I wonder, have they been storing themselves in oak barrels?
The intro lead sounds like late 70's UFO Schenker tone....Love It!
I've always thought Brian Tatler's guitar style lies somewhere between Michael Schenker and Jimmy Page. Right in the middle of those two greats.
@@robertpottle2887 Yes i agree!
I can name two songs inspire by this one, the intro sounds like Trapped under Ice and one of the Riff is the main riff in Crown of Worms. Megadeth and Metallica were not ashamed to show that they loved Diamond Head. Brian is a mean riff Machine 🤟🏾
After reading this I went back to Trapped Under Ice..... yes absolutely 21 seconds in heard it right away.... actually knowing the song I could hear it coming 👍👍👍
Also plenty of influence in Hit the Lights, listen to them back to back
Crown of worms was written by Sean Harris and given to Dave Mustaine to record.
Godfather dude, godfather 🥺
This version makes it sound more like "Helpless" but with different lyrics.
Good ears😈
Holy fucking shit!! New New DH sound!! So Tight ,best shit to happen to 2020
Old school . Perfect . Love it.
Since Mexico City......thats true bro!!!
This is my 1rst time hearing this version and it's kicking major ass!!
What's cool is the sound of this. It's been taken right into the 21st century with the heavier sound on it. The vocals are excellent as they too go perfectly in the mix.Hopefully we get unlocked soon as I'd like to photograph the band if they come to France at a festival.
Sounds great
I put this album on the best of metal list way back in the day when I used to podcast. It sounds even better now.
They sound so full of life and more powerful than ever! They have captured magic during these sessions.
The lyrics on this song are amazing.
This is way ahead of its time🤘🏾
A TIMELESS CLASSIC!!! 1:01 Masterpiece Riff!!!🤘🤘🤘4:00 EPIC BEAUTIFUL HARMONY!!!
Brian = Genius!!!
Hell yeah, I always played this on my guitar!
The Prince would be proud
Very good
I am going to join my team for a new video directing and... boom, this song.
Whatever the issue of my work you made my day for the second time !
Thanks !
And by the way, I listen to your music since the beginning, before Metallica make covers of your work.
We are fortunate 40 years later to still enjoy what we liked when we were teenagers.
another song... 2021 looking pretty bright if this is the case
Outstanding and powerful.
Lagu ni kira ok jugak le, tapi ada yang lebih baguih
Yes, though this is one of my favourite :-)
This is all that i need 😍
NWOBHM resurrection 👍
The 80s are back!!!!
Love it !
Yo why the original album was taken down, upload that shit you'll get your money
The mix on this version is definitely better than the original; the guitars and vocals sound great. But (Please don't shoot me) I like the way the original version was sung more.
My first encounter with this song was the B-side to ‘One’ on a tape, when cassingles were a thing. So while that one remains definitive for me, I cannot help but acknowledge Diamond Head and Brian Tatler’s amazing songs. Without them, and Sabbath, there would be no Metallica.
This is ace, pure metal. 😆
Another day Another Diamond Head upload, you guys make me happy!!
Stellar! Always one of Diamond Head's best songs and this new version rips!
Really digging the new recordings.the tone is huge 🤘
Wow, what a great record, brings back good childhood memories, I always liked the song an especially the solo so much
That melody tho...
i prefer the old and deleted version :(
Agreed
Amazing
Bring back the original. Why would you delete literally your best song and replace it with a version that doesn’t even come close to comparing. The riff in the OG is fucking incredible. Just bring it back. None of this watered down weird shit.
I second this motion, to bring the original back!
Респект и уважение,40+ лет в деле- это круть
Согласен, DH всегда будет в строю!
Awesomeness👊🎤🎶🎸👍
Estou viciado neste álbum, ouvi várias vezes no repeat, um dos melhores da história!!
This song got it all.
Damn catchy plus a classical myth.
I love how it sounds very charming.
Just like the guy you wanna sell your soul to.
At 3:24 they morph into the greatest funk band to then just morph back into an awesome metal band with the greatest bridge /harmony / soulful solo.
Cheers DH. Love this idea! - How about 'Head Down' by Soundgarden?
When I pulled up am I evil to teach it to my fellow guitarist and the new track came up I almost lost it....How killer is it. no words it's off the charts good. Cant say enough good things about them.
Such a classic
Favorite song of this album 🤟
The Best NWOBHM ever, Better Than a lot Of Awesome bands, but DH for me is Always One step ahead.
The genius of Brian Tatler , the man is a riff monster , I was lucky enough to see the band half a dozen times and they were always awesome and had such incredible star quality too. Years later "the White Album" remains the best example of "NWOBHM" there is , absolutely peerless.
Few of those people who disliked this must be my old high school mates...
Хеви Метал Рок 🎸🤘
these tunes have at last , the sound production they damn deserved !!!
I never cared much for the lyrics, but the song jams. Great vocals!
gooooood
Even Maiden couldn't go this heavy. ;^)
Maiden never tried to be this heavy. That's like saying a Def Leppard song couldn't go as heavy as a Maiden song. Diamondhead and Maiden were completely different sounding bands that wrote stylistically and musically different songs. Both bands were and still are amazing.
Mrpositronia btw I think Diamond Head should have been bigger than maiden during the 80's & 90's they would be the successors to both Queen and Led Zeppelin
@@Armando.Sepulveda mmmm, not sure about that. Maiden were much more prolific and consistent at songwriting. In addition to this, Maiden's output of "better, more memorable" music and songs was way ahead of Diamondhead. Diamondhead had some absolutely amazing songs but not enough of them and unfortunately the singer (Sean Harris) was just terrible live.
@@tonytendencies4698 Steve Harris > Sean Harris
@@keithmccrary325 yeah Steve was probably even better at singing live than him
Nice
Клёво!!! Привет из России Diamond Head!!! ЕЕЕЕААА!!!

From Mexico City.....thats true!!
Gran banda sus riff magistrales
Holy shit!
Nice recording really pro!
A little too pro-cessed.
@Nickhead87
I hate digital, but that's the format that 99.9% of bands use these days. Analog sounds so much fuller and warmer, especially for hard rock and metal.
2020 !1!1!1

Awesome stuff! #scottdecker2 was here! ❤🤘
Dang Ive been asleep with these dudes
This sick! So much funk too, which I didn't expect! I had only heard Metallica's cover.
Fathers if MetallicA
I hear a few riffs Metallica may have used, such as the intro for "Trapped Under Ice", and maybe the outro to "Fade To Black" and a few others.
But, I think Mercyful Fate may have gotten a riff and used it for the song "Corpse Without Soul" cuz part of that song has a similar sound to a part in this song.
What if.... Ozzy would sing on a Motorhead track?
He kind of has. If you check out the writing credits for the No More Tears album you'll see Lemmy wrote the lyrics on some tracks.
Oh! No please don't tempt him, Motorhead should be left as intended! Then again, Motorheads version of Whiplash is probably better than the original!
Ozzy did sing on a Motorhead track and it was fuckin' terrible.
I think I still like the original
LIKEALOT!
Fuck yeah!

On 1.25 x speed it sound more gooder!!!!
one of my favourite songs since three fucking decades much love
whole album sounds killer in 1.25x speed
Love the guitar sound on these tracks. Like to hear what gear was used. If i had to guess i'd say straight boosted Marshals with v30's and an oversized cab? Which might be why i like it so much :D If they are plugins or some modeler i swear i'll hang myself right now. >D
Because this was produced in the full lockdown, Ras did it himself with various amps including a Driftwood with a tubescreamer built in, and a Box Of Doom isolation cab.
@@kiray007 Oh nice. Thanks for replying.\m/\m/
I have no idea what amps or if they're even amps at all but if they're Marshalls, they EQ'd them big time. Way too much thick sizzle for a pure Marshall which gets a little thin at those frequencies.
@@kevinsibert3160 They easily could have used plugins on this, but as far as i recall he verifiably owns various Marshal heads, 800 dsl, Marshal cabinets, i think Engl. Mostly see him in front of Marshals in pics live though.
REFRESHING
Much, much better than the Metallica cover
What happened to vocalist? Why he sounds like Ozzy? 😂
Damn y'alls new singer crushes it
. bang that head that doesnt bang!
The Devil play the Guitar 🤘😈
The Danish singer tells Sean Harris to step aside on here
He made a good effort, but he's no Sean Harris.
@@ShiftyDave84 agreed. There is only one Sean Harris !!!
