We recently replaced our traditional fireplace with a wood pellet insert and I love it. That thing seriously cranks out some heat and is more efficient than our old wood burning fireplace. It saves me a lot of money on the gas bill during the winter.
Us 2 we are here in Colorado so happy we did not put in a wood burning stove saved us thousands plus no more chopping wood hauling wood and making a mess on the floor.
So litterly just wood. No binding agent... I didn't know that.. That's pretty cool.
Yep, I was wondering about that recently, now I know!
Sadly the cheaper pellets do use binders and/chemicals to bind the pellets. Just gotta watch out what you buy.

We have been using pellets for 30 years. So clean and heats well! Thanks for the videos! My suggestion would be use both soft and hardwood. If using just soft wood there's too much ash! So use both. Which will read on bag premium pellets. Ours takes corn as well. *Edited for spelling

@@agustea09 Our Drolet Eco-45 uses less pellets when burning softwood pellets as they burn hotter. And we've tried various brands. If you read about this, they claim its the sap in the softwood. Ours really likes white pine and spruce and they burn really clean too.

We love our pellet stove. It heats the whole house. The furnace does comes on but not often.
*This is the best cat litter ever. Very cheap at 5$/40 pounds bag, absorbs smells very well, and compostable! Better than all the other types of litter combined!*

I enjoy my pellet stove but the fan is quite loud (Osburn 2500). I miss the silent heat of the true wood stove, but I do not miss the fuel used (wood logs). Pellets are easier to obtain, and handle. Thank you for the informative video.
My pellet stove did the same. On the back of my stove is a 3 way switch that controls fan speed..set to low it is almost silent. On medium it can be noisy and on high its more than annoying. Your owners manual will tell how to adjust fan speed.
What a great way to utilize construction and manufacturing wood waste! Does this operation bring a lot of heavy truck traffic to your farm on a daily/weekly basis?

scrap wood tends to have a lot of old nails/fasteners in it. Better than going to a landfill.
Could any scrap wood be made into pellets?
I wonder if the Lignin is a strong enough adhesive to be used to shape scrap wood into an mdf material?

I work at marwood we also make wood pellets the supply is large here in atlantic canada and we just cant keep up with demand. I wish i had a way to start a pellet company here but sadly im a production worker without the means. Maybe someday
Look into what is know in the USA as the SBA (Small Business Administration) they provide loans for small businesses with reasonable rates and terms. I'm sure Canada has something similar.

When I was heating with an airtight woodstove we used Oak, never pine. Would there be any advantage to using hardwoods instead of pine and fur to make the pellets???
Hardwood generally produces less soot and waste, it provides a longer slower burn usually due to the natural compression of fibre in the wood. However quick growing timber and softwoods etc for example Pine burns hotter but a lot faster leaving a lot of residue and soot. etc.

@@vicO1323 Most stoves run best on a blend, my own runs at peak efficiency (heat produced, over soot/ash build up) on an 80/20 mix (hard/soft). Running purely hardwood resulted in a stove that kept sputtering out at low settings, and didnt produce enough heat at medium settings, while not burning quickly enough to make room for the new pellets coming down (nothing like setting your hopper on fire to wake you up in the middle of the night!)
Softwood i was going through 8 pounds every 24 hrs...it was nuts.
now, i can run my pellet stove on the lower settings, for a good 48 hours, only go through 60 pounds, and it heats the un-insulated room i stay in quite well.
Use both soft and hardwood. If you just use hardwood it's creates less heat.
this makes extremely good and cheap cat litter was well.

In the Netherlands we are suffering from an abuse of prices caused by the greediness of the local distributors. They raised the price per pallet from 285 Euro to 900 Euro. The question is now if it is worthwhile to invest in a pelletstove.

In the manufacturing process, what's the difference between pellets used for horse bedding and stove pellets? I think the difference is in the wood density but is there any toxic chemicals involved that could harm the animal?
It's worth the effort to test different brands of pellets for heat and ash. Some pellets give off 20 to 30% less heat and much more ash. I burn 5+ tons of pellets a season and yet never fill my 6 gallon ash vacuum for the whole season including cleaning the chimney. Best pellets for heat and minimal ash are fir. Hard woods or pellets with some grass or similar matter make the most ash. Usually (but not always) the most expensive pellets are really the best buy.

@@mikecee_bbq1802 I use Pacific Coast Pellets with the brand names Sierra, Olympus, and Cascade. Different brand names for different retailers. They serve Alaska, the West Coast and as far east as NM and Montana.

what comes to mind is the danger of a dust explosion. Worked at a factory where chip board is made. Similar process , but after the boards come out of the hot press they go under a large belt sander. this dust is highly volatile when the dust and air mixture is correct. A large silo blew up while I was there.

I just dug a hole in my living room floor and love pouring your pellets into the hole and burning it! Keeps the living room warm and not that smoky. Kind of hard to see but as long as we leave the windows open we can survive I love it

Does anyone know why some pellets claim they are softwood yet are dark brown in color? Are they including bark in the mix? Does bark have more ash than wood?
I bought some bags in Tasmania which were full of the dust and weren't even sealed enough to not burst open.
Needless to say will not buy those again and went for a hardwood company which must use the same process as this video because they were clean, well shaped and sealed well enough to be handled.

Like bio fuels,pellets probably a wash on energy used vs energy gained. Esp with trucking from store to store. Takes 1 gal of oil to produce 1.2 gals of bio fuel. But it's "green"..lol

Conservation of energy doesnt apply to profitability....lol. in the end...if some guy can wash for fossil vs bio...then the end user is being clean for heat and saving money why the producer is making money...I dont see a problem with it. Win all around really.
But you are right...the hypocrisy of electric cars is funny to me. The manufacturing and long term damage to the environment from salvage yards stocked with lithium powered cars cars that were out....let's see how they deal with that one....or the guy that parks his car in the yard because it broke....and..."he will get to it next week" and then years later it is over grown with 2500 pounds of leaking lithium in it.

Mix it about 50% with good pellets and burn it .

Pellets are made of just about anything some ppl use lawn trimmings or hemp. Pretty much as long as it burns dry
I'm curious how you would propose getting moisture content of algae down to 5%.
There are potential algae based energy technologies, but these work on good old-fashioned combustion. Different sort of engineering beast. :)
How is the BTU rating calculated for wood pellets? For instance, how do they calculate this rating or energy output per pound in oak vs pine for instance?
Averages probably, its al mixed to a pretty consistent mix, so they test multiple batches from the diff grade pellets and use the averages of those probably

It's a somewhat spicy-sounding name for what is ultimately a sealed jar inside a bit of water. A sample (in this case, wood pellets) is placed inside the chamber, sealed, and then the chamber itself is placed inside a vessel containing a known volume of water.
The sample is then ignited, the heat from that ignition is transferred to the water, causing the temperature of the water to rise. The change in temperature associated with the sample's ignition is recorded. Through a few layers of known formulas, you end up with the "Gross Calorific Value" of the sample. Effectively, your "BTU Loading".
For wood pellets, you see on the order of 6000-8000 btu/lbm

At first sight I wondered why you had so much dust coming through with the fresh pellets. Then you said you recycled the fines from the cooler. From experience you will find a huge reduction of fines if you don't return any material. It can actually reach the point where even new materials will not bind.
i would have lost money on the glue idea. i totally thought that you used something but just pressure and heat bind them together. WOW.
You can get the same results with a drill bit... You're suppose to back the drill bit out constantly so the saw dust can escape the hole but if you rammed the drill bit into the wood really fast you'll compact the sawdust and it'll kind of stick to the bit and when you pry it off the bit it looks just like how a pellet looks.

If a magnet is needed to remove screws, nails etc., how can you be sure that none of the wood scraps have paint, varnish or glue on them? And you're going to smoke meat with that? I'll stick with natural wood.
These pellets are for stoves, not grills.
It's not for cooking. They remove the nails and steel so it doesn't mess up their machines.

ABSOLUTELY NOT. Heating Pellets, invariably, contain some combination of both Hardwood and Softwood. Hardwood Pellets, specficially excluding Softwood from their recipes, are fine to use and in fact have come a long way in terms of variety, quality, etc.
The reason you don't want softwood used in a BBQ pellet comes down to something called "Volatile Organic Compounds" (VOCs). Now, these VOCs are found invariably in all (at least to my knowledge) wood species, but softwood's (your Pines, Spruce, Fir, Cedar, Hemlock, etc - PS: Yes. Hemlock is a Softwood. Anyone telling you differently is simply incorrect) contain them in something in VASTLY higher quantities
Exposed to a low-to-moderate amount of these VOCs is a bit like being exposed to a low-to-moderate amount of radiation - no biggie! When, however, these VOCs are in sufficient concentration, not only are they flammable (they make a good portion of the "soot" and "creosote" that's familiar to anyone with experience running a Wood Stove) but are toxic as well.
Short Version: Heck no, man! Not heating pellets at least!

So you take something carbon neutral like wood, use a bunch of electricity / fossil fuels to prepare them, and then drive them longer distance to the customer. Great idea.
Nothing is free, for fuel, gas or electricity you have to spend something to have it in a convenient form. If you use a fireplace you need to cut a tree, you use gas tools, you need to put time to make it to fit the fire place and you will have all form of insect introduce in the house. At the bare minimum pellet come free of chemical, they are garbages so they help heat the house after a minimum transformation. unstead of filling a landfill.
Still much better than coal
Pretend for a moment that there was such a thing as forestry management in California. Instead of going up in flames every year all that wood could be used to provide inexpensive heat for millions of people.

Had a pellet stove and HATED it. The dust it creates is super fine and gets everywhere. It must be shut down and cleaned often otherwise it works like crap. AND...the pellets just keep getting more and more expensive. Today it costs about $8 a day to heat with pellets.
