Its nothing to do with the constituencies, the problem is first past the post. Also, Labour does not win when its outwardly left wing unfortunately. 40 year decline is untrue, the UK did really well between 1997 and 2008. Labour during this election were actually super smart, they employed an all or nothing strategy when it came to campaigning. Vote share is not actually very important in determining the power of a government.

Average income is abysmally low in britain, but our minimum wage is higher and the lack of a need for health insurance reduces the required amount of income required to live a comparably comfortable life Edit: I'm not arguing against your statement that austerity broke the country.
