You see, this video essay and the story it has told has the potential to become a book :) Enjoyed this. It’s given me some ideas. I keep telling myself I should print more work, and this has helped. Cheers pal.
@@derrenleepoole ahhh! It's working then, thank you. My plan for UA-cam is to become a better documentary filmmaker. Obviously this was just filmed on a phone but you know, it's storytelling.
@ it’s good story telling and honest. I think it’s important to show the realities of any artistic endeavour. For consumers of content like this on this platform, to see the very real likelihood that you may not sell a book or zine is quite grounding. You always have a positive vibe to your videos, seeing the upside to any situation. But I’m sure (assuming of course) you were quite deflated on the day, even if it may not come across on the video.
@derrenleepoole that day I was hungover from my old professors wake the night before, so to pay £20 to sit quitely with books rather than wrangling my twins at home on a hangover... Ha! It was still a win!
@derrenleepoole as for the tone of 'the show', well I've found that the worst photography lecturers I've had are very serious and absolutist as they are coming from a place of little empirical experience. Which means they have to play the 'Draconian card'. I'm experienced in what I do and can be light hearted as I have nothing to hide. UA-camrs do the same thing in this strange 21st century 'hustler power of positive thought huckster social media hellscape' we find ourselves in. Failure is fine. You know who you truly are in failure, not success.
Commiserations for not making a sale, but you made new friends and contacts, and we viewers got to learn what that book fair is like via your video, so worth the effort!

That was very interesting and filled my head with conflicting thoughts Admiration for the commitment and hard work that sometimes results in zero obvious success Doubt that I could or would ever fit into this scene or that if I made a book it would appeal to the type of people who buy these kind of books Frustration that living 15 miles from lands end and so many hundreds of miles from the main hubs of arts and photography makes visiting events , galleries , face to face networking virtually impossible financially Slight relief that I will be in the woods tomorrow morning with my dog and my camera and not on a tube fighting for a seat !

@@jbentosimoes no, idea I had to use some pretty heavy noise reduction in the edit so it did make snippets of sound go nuts! Yes, Dungeness is a popular place. selling books is the holy grail, or something like that. not a reflection on genius, originality, interesting-ness (dungeness) or anything. i have given a couple away over the years, not many, and i imagine they got recycled soon after that. will try again, imagine you will too, thanks for the idea.
Yeah, you win some you lose some. On average I sell a couple a week via my website so that's all good. I do have a distributor now so hopefully they will get my Dungeness book in some book shops! I will reach out to them in the new year and hope for the best.
