I have to say I went back and watched the scenes I was writing about and it’s wild to just watch the Drummer saga. She was in the middle of so much and has an insane highlight reel. This was a fun one to make. Great character. Great story. Let me know what you think, and your favorite Drummer scene.
She is so electric she is the center of every scene, you cant keep your eyes off her. You never know what she will do next yet is vulnerable and has incredible range, what an actress.
Off topic, sorry... PETE! PLEASE make a spoilery version of one of your vids on Book 9. Everyone's read it already who is hooked on the series. Do it! Do your style of video for the insiders. Love your style BTW, I've gotten turned on to shows I never would have watched without you (like FAMK). Thanks!
100% agree. Cara Gee really crushes that role, I love her screen presence so much and I always look forward to seeing more of her arc. I also love how her lifestyle is portrayed and not just added for political correctness. The way she integrates Michio Pa from the books into her persona is why I feel like any book adapted to TV should have the author(s) involved since their world so effortlessly shows how diverse our society is.
She's out to avenge the loss of a man who essentially became a father to her in many ways. That's a force of nature you can't help but get caught up in.
Cara Gee is a Canadian national treasure. When an actor steals the show from the likes of Jared Harris and David Strathairn, you know you are dealing with a major talent. She seems like a cool person in interviews as well.
I totally agree. The producers casting of Cara Gee was excellent. The writers did a magnificent job of writing her character arc and how she absorbed several of the book's characters so well. But Cara Gee is really the key to Drummer. She is f'ing brilliant. Such a bad ass, loyal friend, staunch belter and a commanding captain. I was blown away by all of her dramatic scenes. Not to mention she's so beautiful. ☉‿⚆ ♥
Book readers were talking about how excited they were for Bobbie Draper in S2, but it was Drummer that instantly caught my attention and stole the show as the righthand man to Fred Johnson radiating with such gravitas already in her first appearance when she was prepping that assault squad in the Fed Ex container.
Cara Gee's acting is one of the highlights of the series. I'd put Ashford up there also, so it was ashame to lose his character to the story. (But also proved nobody is safe). I look forward to reading the books and plan to do that right after this season ends. The once I've finished reading the first 6(?) books will re-watch the series with that new perspective.
Just so you are aware. TV series Drummer does not exist in the books. It’s a combination of two book characters. But she became a fan favourite so she became a series regular and I guess they decided her character will embody two characters story arcs from the books
@@billtang79 Drummer exists in the books, but isn't introduced until the 5th book. She's also in the 3 books after book 5. But, yes, if people only want to read the first 6 books, then they'll find show Drummer as Pa or Sam in book 2. And again as Bull, Pa and Sam in S3. Then again as Pa in books 5 and 6.
Cara Gee and Frankie Adams are two of my favorite actresses in the show. Cara Gee embodies the Belt and Frankie Adams embodies what a Martian Marine was like.
for an actress to do so well that the writers of the books and show decide they have to keep her in throughout the whole narrative?..... well that's just plain badassery. Cara Gee is incredible, especially after the performance she pulled off in S06E05. Brought a tear to my eye. What is it about Drummer that makes her a favourite of many Expanse fans? Myself included. I think it can be boiled down to her utter defiance.
One of the best (if not the best) characters I have come across, in all sci-fi (and other genres). Cara Gee adds magnetism with a balance of bad ass-ness, moral guide and vulnerability. That scene with Naomi Nagata in s605(?) - stands out like Gold.
Cara is pretty much a national treasure at this point. Drummer is indeed one of the most intense and interesting characters in all things scifi. And when you emphasized that she "IS" the belt, we saw footage with her and Marco - and her shoulders were littered with belts :)
This is a good cast and I know some of them from other productions, but Cara Gee is new to me and boy does she have range. I know she has done TV but I think her only movie with an A-list actor was Call of the Wild with Harrison Ford, alas that role is quite short. I know she could take any role and be fine but would good in a good big movie about new world indigenous people since she is one, if one could find such a story.
It's that she has a moral compass without in any way feeling any less like a belter. She's the belter you want to win and the belter this Earther would want to work for.
drummer and ashford were absolutely my favourite characters in the tv series, which is interesting because they are lightyears away from their book counterparts. sometimes tv writers get things right.
The thing I love is she didn’t grow into the strong leader she is overnight, she evolved, she grew, she learned, she sacrificed and Cara Gee is so good at playing every little things that make the character special !
Just got done watching The expanse and rewatching it again! Drummer is my favorite belter, she is strong, fierce, honorable. I really hope a streaming service picks up more seasons this show is the best sci-fi show thats been on for years
Drummer actually makes me root for the belters, alongside Miller. She's a legit BADASS. No doubts about it. She has such great charisma (thanks to the actress) and seems to be the character I can agree with as far as plans for the belters goes. She is this solid mix between the extremes of the OPA and the boot-lkcking from Miller. She seems to have such a outside look on things that you can't help but hope she becomes the leader of the belters as she clearly understands what it means to be belter, but also understands how important the inners are to their success
Drummer, Draper, and Amos are my favorite characters in this series, all of them are tested, broken, and grow and are just a delight to watch in every scene they are in.
One of the best characters in the show and an excellent example of a book adaptation that is better than the sum of its parts. This underscores how good show writing can actually eclipse the books that they draw from, a rarity at the best of times and almost unheard of these days. This is fast becoming my all time favorite SciFi TV series ever. It just never stops getting better.
More shows based on books need to do this, it keeps things familiar but surprising for book readers and allows for an easy way to trim narrative flab. Much as I love Bull, and to a lesser extent Michio Pa (both in the show in completely different roles) it feels like Drummer is an amalgam of these characters that winds up being more than the sum of her parts, aided by a superb performance. Also, this is how you write a 'strong female character'. All other franchises please take note!
Exactly. She manages that incredible strength without lording it over others. Most strong female leads are horrible; they always make them treat men as children who need their hand held, which just makes them powerful bullies. Drummer manages to be strong af without all that BS.
This one of my mixed pro’s and con’s. I absolutely LOVE the screen Drummer, and Cara’s portrayal is deific! I understand the amalgamation of Bull and Pa into the Drummer character, and I’m in favor of it much more than I’d’ve expected. What I don’t like, what I actually *hate*, is what they DID do with Michio on-screen (keep in mind that I prefer book-Michio over book-Bull). IMO, they should’ve just left the character out, and given the onscreen “Michio” a different name, rather than turn a strong book character into a wet noodle (Also, I also LOVE the onscreen Ashford much more so than book-Asher. I need a spin-off series following the history of Ashford)
The Expanse is a master class in writing strong female characters. Even Bobbie the Badass is nuanced. Drummer and Avasarala are without equals anywhere else in fiction. Someone needs to give a tutorial to the writers of Yellowstone.
There are a lot of great characters, but there really is something relatable about her. The dilemma you point out about choosing the lesser of two evils is always over her, as she struggles to do the right thing. Despite all her bad-assery, she can't really make it right. Cara Gee's performance makes it all the better, just amazing.
Every Drummer moment is my favorite, but if I have to choose one it would be in season 5 when Coral is explaining why they have to go after the Roci because it's a symbol of inner/belter assimilation and on and on. Drummer turns and rolls her eyes as if to say "oh-la-la, somebody's getting laid in belter college" In all seriousness I wonder how many Expanse fans will have daughters who get named Camina. If I was having a little girl I'd name her Camina, it's a beautiful name and I'd hope my daughter would grow up to be a strong and smart as the character.
Absolutely my fave character and most incredible acting performance (in a show filled with incredible performances). Still get chills from her Behemoth speech to her crew - no-sh!t, a template on how to inspire ppl who are nervous/scared facing a big challenge.
Camina Drummer has become my favorite character in the show; her speech against Marco Inaros in episode 4 of season 6 gave me chills. I have just started reading the book series, but if Drummer is not in the books, I may not bother.
From the interviews I've seen with Cara, she seems to be the actor playing farthest from type. She comes off as light and airy IRL, as opposed to the intense force of nature she portrays in The Expanse. Not to mention that she has done this character while pregnant! She is an incredible actress. Camina Drummer is the case of the perfect storm, where a great actress is given a juicy role, and writers are willing to evolve the character, to accommodate the magic that is starting to happen. My hat is off to the writers, and show runner smart enough to see what was happening.
I did not even recognize her the first time I saw her interviewed. It really reinforced for me how incredible she is as an actress, able to just inhabit this character whose personality and mannerisms are so different from her own. Love Camina, love Cara. Absolutely my Pirate Queen forever.
I think that she is amazing, a great character, and that Naomi never even seems to notice Drummer is probably in love with her either is really well done. Nothing overt, really subtle, at least I assume that’s what they were going for. Lots of subtle things from drummer, Naomi completely oblivious. She see’s Naomi and Holden together, and just steps back as well.
I hope Drummer gets a good amount of screen time and a proper sendoff in the final season. She's probably my favourite character. Crazy considering she's basically a show only character at this point. Testament to Cara's skill as an actor
After her first introduction as Drummer, I thought it was a pity she didn’t get to play Pa, and then when they just rolled the characters together, it just worked. They haven’t had to mess with too much continuity to bring this to the screen, so Well Done!!
I was detail watching Cara Gee`s acting as Drummer. Perfection. When she talks in Belter it is believable and seamless. Definately my favourite character
I just finished book 8 and I really like what they did with show Drummer. Totally agree she is greater than the sum of the parts they used to write that character, in no small part from her performance.
I loved this video. You nailed it Pete, this character is amazing. But, I think we owe so much to Cara Gee. Watching the S6E5 Ty and that Guy video and learning how much she put into that character and inspired them to continue to evolve her role was a treat and kind of what I expected had happened.
The Expanse had amazing casting all the way down the line. Some of my favorites are Aghdashloo, Cara Gee and Thomas Jane. Even a couple of actors who didn't wow me at first won me over as the show progressed. What impressed me the most about this show was the sharp, thoughtful and logical dialog. When Chrisjen Avasarala is planning, playing, hoping, gambling with life and death, attempting to build alliances, or investigating mysteries, it is very convincing. Wonderful writing. And the actress played the part beautifully. It's some of the best dialog I've ever seen in any genre. When the show started I expected Chrisjen's character and story arc to not be able to continue at the depth of implied analysis that she exhibits. I thought the writers would get lazy or be unable to match the challenge they built for themselves in such a layered, wise and politically savvy character as the story became more complicated. I was quite happy to be wrong.
Hands down my fave character on the show! Thanks for running up her story arc. It’s always amazing to see clips of Cara Gee IRL to highlight the transformation she brings to the role, amazing
Ashford and Camina are definitely my two favorite characters on the show.... they are just great leaders that do what needs to be done ...whether savagely or politely
I remember the 1st time I saw Camina, explaining to Miller about the exit of the breaching pod, I said WHO is that? Wow! Camina is quite the Gal and personally Ive enjoyed all of her Story. Im not a book reader but would really enjoy more Camina story, hopefully there is more...
Telltale Games is making a video game where you play as Drummer herself! It serves as a prequel to her story in The Expanse TV show. Idk if you’re a video game person, but it was announced at the Game Awards earlier this year and a lot of fans are thrilled to get more content with her.
This title alone made me watch this video. I probably would have watched it if it was titled any other thing at some point. But Drummer is my girl! Any video paying homage to her I'm gonna immediately watch
She is my favorite character and there are many compelling aspects to this character. Pete, your reviews are very thoughtful and compelling. You have caused me to rewatch many episodes and study the series.
For me, the show has 4 characters that do not even need to speak, just stand in front of the camera, which are: Amos, Avasarala, Boby and Drummer, they fill the screen only with their presence
I watched the show just to get a feel of the world because we are playing the tabletop rpg with friends. Drummer is the only character for which I never pushed the forward button. I never got bored or tired of watching her scenes. Incredible performance.
Cara Gee brings acting chops to the role, but she has also drawn on her background as an indigenous woman to relate to the Belter cause. Clean drinking water for First Nations communities is a major issue, as are other resource/land rights, plus the hundreds of years of systemic racism and cultural genocide.
Astoundingly good actress (Cara Gee is so different in real life!) and the best character in TV sci fi ever I really think so. I was very impressed by the love hate relationship she had with Ashford. Absolutely first class acting and lines which is not necessarily the case with The Expanse itself, although I rate it second to Babylon 5 in my personal list - both shows vastly transcending ST:TNG, and showing what could and should have been done with DS9 and Voyager, the latter especially. Number three the reinvented Battlestar Galactica and number four NuWHo Russell T Davies and Moffatt eras ONLY. Would be interested to see a video on Babylon 5 influences on The Expanse, or on the Expanse novels, with Laconian ships using Shadow technology eh?
Another great moment in the show is when she decides to send Ashford's last Message to Fred Johnson to help out. To me its a call back to a season 2 scene where Holden is sitting on the bench and Avasrealla is needling him to send a message to Anna. Once Holden folds and sense the message. Naomi is upset and Holden's response is "We are just sending a message" and she reply's back "That's how it start's"
I think Cara Gee started reasonably strong with that character. When she was introduced she was a good supporting actor. But, I remember vividly the scene where she is reviewing the battle damage to the Rocinante…she gets her first chance to really deliver a character-developing exposition…and she goes from giddy black humor, to sincere respect, and finishes with this great line to Naomi where she says “…I see you’re from some rock…” with a really aggressive gesture towards her own neck tattoo. It’s an incredibly subtle way of communicating her intense pride as a belter using a seemingly self-deprecating statement. There is something about Gee and her delivery of that line…I thought “Wow, I LIKE her!” and I Immediately paused and rewound the video…at least three or four times just to watch her deliver “…I see you’re from some rock…” again and again. It’s just obvious from that scene that you could not possibly put Drummer on screen too much. Cara Gee killed that role.
I'm loving every one of the characters and most especially these actors in The Expanse, they are all top notch and the story lines allow each character and actor to have their key strengths shine. One point I've noticed is the great diversity of the different ethnicities of these actors and their characters... they are from everywhere and that's just how it is in real life, a great melting pot of folks from all over. The show just keeps getting better in this new Fall 2021 season into Spring 2022, as the characters and actors each really come into their own. Can't wait for each new episode.
She's a brilliant commander who truly cares for her people and who's got a moral compass. These are wonderful and honourable attributes. I truly admire her character. I agree with you when you say "Drummer is The Belt". I dare say she's probably the most admirable character of them all. Many of the characters are, but as leaders are concerned she's number 1. Cara Gee's performance is Top.
Hands down Drummer is one of the most influential characters in the entire IP. Even from under a bootheel she managed to leverage the right people in the right place to get where she needed to be. She is the belt, for real.
S6, Ep4 Drummer IS THE BELT now, more than Marco Inaros ever could be, and now Marco knows it too. The next time his crew drums and chants a name, it will be Drummer they drum for.
My favourite Dummer moment, when she asks Fred when the Roci crew come back to Tycho station and Fred is mad at them and she asks "Shall I meet them at the airlock with guns".
I was heartbroken when Ashford was killed, because I love the working relationship that Camina and Ashford established. I also got those similar vibes from Harris and Camina although it didn't last too long. Ugh, Camina is amazing!!!! She and the Belters represent the voiceless and lower rungs of the social classes. I was so happy when Holden took the presidential status all for a brief touching speech to then give it up to Camina referencing back in Season 2 (If i'm not mistake) about the rings access truly and ought to belong to the Belters. The circle became complete.
Love your videos. You really do credit to the shows and especially the characters you cover in said videos. This is "Hard" sci-fi at the best its been in decades and as popular as the show has become the fact it hasn't become a juggernaut along the lines of a Game of thrones is almost criminal.
Drummer is my favourite woman character in science fiction. Absolute badass with so much relatable stuff going on in her personal life, and Cara Gee's performance is terrific. Plus Cara is so warm and funny in real life: her post show chats with Wes Chatham (Amos) on his podcast just enhanced the whole thing.
I'm a little late because I wanted to wait until 3 episodes were out so I could binge, and all I have to say is, I have ALWAYS loved me some Drummer. My favorite character by far!
So hyped for Tell tales Expanse video game with Drummer as the main character! Drummer is one of my favorite characters on the show, and I'm looking forward to getting more Drummer in muh life!
"I never loved you because you were fighters, I loved you because you were builder's, I wanted us to build something together." Fucking chills, an incredible moment and absolutely well executed by Cara Gee

Ashford is the ultimate depiction of a Space Pirate
Cara Gee is amazing, steals so many scenes:)
Fantastic recap of Drummer's story! I can't pick my favorite Drummer scenes but I think her dialogues are what makes her Drummer.
I hope Drummer gets a good amount of screen time and a proper sendoff in the final season. She's probably my favourite character. Crazy considering she's basically a show only character at this point. Testament to Cara's skill as an actor
Oh she did.
@@macaronipanda9516 ha yeah, they did a good job with the last season. Drummer got what she deserved too. Well pleased
She is one of my favorite characters in all of TV. Her look can cut glass.
Beltalowda! I love the show's portrayal of Drummer... I love her performance.
After her first introduction as Drummer, I thought it was a pity she didn’t get to play Pa, and then when they just rolled the characters together, it just worked. They haven’t had to mess with too much continuity to bring this to the screen, so Well Done!!
Drummer ans Bobbie are my absolute favorite. Ever.
I totally agree! Drummer Rocks. Thanks for the Drummer timeline.
I was detail watching Cara Gee`s acting as Drummer. Perfection. When she talks in Belter it is believable and seamless. Definately my favourite character
Just love the character and this woman’s acting ability!
Yes she is. When you look at the travesty that is modern genre TV The Expanse is the one shining light. It deserved 24 show seasons.
He acting was so good and she got so much exposure
They can't afford her anymore
Frankie neither.
Especially Frankie.
I think it was good because it had great novels to adapt and it should not go further than the novels or risk a debacle like Game of Thrones season 8.
@@Harlock2day Undoubtedly. I do just feel as I said a little cheated with the episode count. It is great TV.
I just finished book 8 and I really like what they did with show Drummer. Totally agree she is greater than the sum of the parts they used to write that character, in no small part from her performance.
She owns the role.
Excellent video Pete, you've really put into words everything I feel about Drummer. She's my absolutely favourite character of the show!
Thanks, glad you liked it. It was a fun one to make.
Searched "favorite character on the expanse" and this was the first vid that popped up. Not disappointed, my favourite hands down. You go girl 🤩
Well written character and a flawless performance, she's the real deal.
Absolutely
I’ve not yet read the books, but kudos to the tv producers for not letting an outstanding actress go to waste
The conversations between Drummer and Ashford were mesmerising, in a show with so many great characters she was my favourite along with That guy.
Hands down my fave character on the show! Thanks for running up her story arc. It’s always amazing to see clips of Cara Gee IRL to highlight the transformation she brings to the role, amazing
Pretty amazing to think about how she was eight months pregnant filming season 5.
Ashford and Camina are definitely my two favorite characters on the show.... they are just great leaders that do what needs to be done ...whether savagely or politely
This character is amazing. Her repore with Ashford is awesome. She is really interesting to watch and I really look forward to her scenes.
I think I will rewatch it all one day.
I'm sure I will, and it won't be long before I do.
This title alone made me watch this video. I probably would have watched it if it was titled any other thing at some point. But Drummer is my girl! Any video paying homage to her I'm gonna immediately watch
Every scene with Drummer is compelling. Well done, Cara Gee.
Just a show on Camina Drummer will do, what a character and Cara geez she is awesome
I really love Drummer; she's a true warrior for her people and she is fair and objective. BELTALOWDA
Drummer was one of the characters that kept me riveted to the series. Well done, Cara Gee, well done.
Now I love her even more.
you forgot the part where the indigenous were already genociding each other...
Thanks Pete! Bc of this vid I’ve decided to rewatch starting from season two. I totally agree Drummer (Cara Gee) is the best and badass character.
The level of acting and commitment to character is insane. Not just from Cara Gee, but Marco and the rest too. Nevertheless, props to Drummer
Agreed. Easily my favourite character in the show, along with Avasarala and Amos at her right and left.
"Captain now, Camina later" - fucking legend
I just finished watching the show. You nailed it with this video. She was the belt and one of the best, if not the best characters altogether.
Precise, concise and comprehensive! Drummer is awesome and you should have more subscribers…well done as usual Pete!!
Drummer: Oy, Beltalowda... we built these cans in a hurry. It will get a little bumpy when the thrusters fire!!
Me: Queen, step on me 😍😍😍
Love your videos.
I LOVE HER CHARACTER and cara Gee is just wow what an actress, the best character 👏
There's no such thing as "best character" in this show, everyone is just amazing.
Good point, and really the credit goes to the authors and the writers. But some do really stand out.
Agree. Drummer is very good, but not the best in my view.
Bobbie was Great.
What Made Drummed stand out was she was featured more.
I thought the Kid who played Filip Nagata was terrible though.
In walks Cara Gee- “hold my beer”
incredible actress and gorgeous too
"I never loved you because you were fighters, I loved you because you were builder's, I wanted us to build something together."
Fucking chills, an incredible moment and absolutely well executed by Cara Gee
