There is deep lore, and there is deep lore. I have to salute you for your persistence and perception. Millions have heard that song, but you appear to be the only one to have caught that second voice.
While Mendicant Bias' voice is very deep on this song, people have made it so that his voice is higher in pitch to sound like a real human speaking. And when you listen to that, it sounds a lot like the second voice. But to me, the second voice seems to sound a lot like Truth's. He was broadcasting to the entire city at the time, but it does sound a bit strange to have him hidden in a song like that. So maybe the VA for truth was the same for the second voice.

....and then you played us the Mausoleum Suite and I was reminded of how Halo doesn't have any miraculous/magical elements in it, but so often FEELS like it does. We often got levels that felt sooooo spooky or mystical almost. I loved it. I am, by psychology, a "natural" stealth gamer. I'm almost automatically good at them because I intuitively understand how to make the right decision and have that ability to be patient and methodical that sometimes, people who excel at FPSs don't have. I have never had so much fun with Halo as I did playing as the Arbiter and going through the "flood infested wall" with the fog and the creepy sounds and the distant howling. As I'm writing this, I'm watching some recording of someone playing through it. They're doing okay insofar as they aren't dying, sure, but they are not ever using their cloak! WTH? Half the damn point of the Arbiter is he has that cloak! A good player who really works that cloak can chump the flood like the useless garbage they are! One sure as hell doesn't waste a shotgun round on an infection form. Anyway, whatever, there's a piece of that level that one can get through with the cloak a bunch of grenades, and maybe just a dozen shotgun shells. So much fun to treat the flood with the murderous contempt they deserve. So much fun to just let the ring's sentinel systems do as much of the work as possible before maybe having to deal with them and maybe not, often, you can just slip right by them.... ...and all the while, the fog and the audio makes it feel like one is navigating a nightmare realm!

Makes me wish Bungie could've created a more violent and oppressive section dedicated through the crashed sentinel factory, where fast, violent juggernauts are roaming at high speeds and capabilities, so cloaking between exposed elements and small crevices, one would escape. A gameplay shift to being survival horror and extreme danger dedicated to showcase how horrifying the Flood's overwhelming power truly can get to being, and illustrate to the player more BODLY just how much the Flood really, REALLY need our attention to eradicate by any means necessary! Would add more drama to the horror element of this space opera 🕺💃
There are at least two other unsolved mysteries in Halo 2; what were the unknown/unauthorized "meddler" species that accessed the teleporters that resulted in the breakout of the flood in cold storage just a few hundred years after the firing of the array? What happened to Penitent Tangent and why did he neglect his duties so soon after he was deployed?
I don't think we will ever actually find out. It could have just been a bit of fluff text that wasn't really thought about. He's done a video on it and even to this day I don't think he knows.

This is the kind of stuff that I was always looking forward to being answered eventually... I wonder what could have happened if 343i actually respected Bungie and consulted them about the lore instead of just making up their own random mediocre stuff. If I remember correctly there were talks about some sort of species that was really old, meddling from the shadows (which I think that the endless we're supposed to be inspired by but, of course just like everything else they feel generic). It's also possible that The information about a meddler species was narrator bias. It might have just been whoever made the comment's assumption. It could have just been a corrupted monitor or something simple. Back then, with competent writers, narrator bias is an actual thing you would have to take into consideration.

splitting the track into left and right channels and then focusing on the right channel, reverse playback, invert polarity, bpm to 124, rate to 1.24 the voice is becoming much clearer but I have to get to other things for awhile
I'd bet the reason the voice wasn't included in the remake was because Marty wasn't contacted at all for the remastering of the soundtrack. The Music team was told they weren't allowed to talk to him about the remaster
What I think is that there is a few possibilities: A kind of sound pentimento, missing something that even the original devs forgot to put in OR the more likely option that this requires other sounds overlayed to be properly heard. There is also the possibility that this is something like the N7 day last year with an image being printing into this (cant remember exactly what happened with that bit)

Don't know how helpful this is, but I feel fairly confident that that is the voice of the Prophet of Truth, or at the very least his voice actor, Michael Wincott. I mean, think about it: they had to get someone to record these lines so it would likely be someone already a part of the cast. And Truth is the most connected character to the Keyship besides Mendicant Bias. This is complete conjecture (really it all is) but if I had to guess, the hidden dialogue is meant to be a conversation between Mendicant and Truth. And what would be a big enough secret at this time for Bungie to bother hiding it in the game? That humans are the descendants of Forerunners. So my gut instinct is that it is Mendicant Bias telling the Prophet of Truth the, well, truth, and that's when he decides to bury the story.
It honestly reminds me of the Profit's chanting from the end of the mission Delta Halo (the untranslated version). At least, it sounds similar in pitch.
Unfortunately halo 2 and 3 passed me by. It was a bad time in my life so I didn't get into halo again till ODST and Reach. But I'll get to them at some point, it's nice to hear about them though.
I would play them immediately if you're still into gaming. Halo 2 came out when I was 7, and it's still one of my favorite games till this day. I didn't have the xbxo love component, I played with my cousins and brothers, and it was awesome. Halo 3 is goated. Played so much forge making maps and custom games. The golden days are gone, but there are a ton of discords to find people playing customs on mcc. If you don't have mcc, it comes with a game pass, so it's only 15 bucks for a single month you could get through both of them.

It's an interesting mystery proposal, but despite that, as you mention in the video, there are conjectures and details that don't make much sense, I think that the sounds that are heard are indeed a voice, but more than transmitting a message with additional context as happens in both versions, it could be the equivalent of "ghostly voices", small modified phrases that at best, didn't count for more than what is already said in the song, or they could be guttural sounds modified to give a spectral sensation, perhaps being the reason why those sounds are not present in the anniversary version, I mention this because similar to cases like the symbols of Sandtrap or New Mombasa (where in the end they were given a specific meaning in recent media), it could also be the case that there simply isn't really a mystery and it's more about the collective fascination of the fandom to unravel a secret that may not have existed, despite that, the same discovery It's honestly fun.

I've heard about the voice in the early parts of the Mausoleum Suite. There's a message that you can hear if you play it backward, but I don't think I've come across this one. The message at the beginning can probably be found in a video on UA-cam; that's where I got it from. It contains some biblical references and other things, and it sounds exactly like the Prophet of Truth/Regret. It stumped me a bit because it seemed to be discussing the concept of one God, which is confusing since the Covenant worships multiple gods. You could do a video on that!
I have no experience in audio stuff so I'll just take a guess with a reasoning as to who is that voice, and what they may be conveying. A long read, so bare with me a bit. The voice could actually be the Prophet of Truth. He may actually be relaying a message in his own language to perhaps an acquaintence, a secret message that none of the other Prophets must know about. Perhaps a different species than what there is in The Covenant. Or perhaps a fallen human, to be more specific, a human who went The Covenant way. Perhaps they were sent on a secret mission that only Truth knows, and this mission relies on the findings of the other Mendicant Bias parts. Perhaps Truth found information on Offensive Bias and a way to corrupt it like how The Precursor did to Mendicant Bias. Maybe they wanted to get Offensive Bias on their side to destroy humanity, but due to Arbiter stopping Truth in Halo 3, whoever was sent after Offensive did not manage to hear back from Truth, and would of had to abandon mission because it was already too risky, and contact with Truth being impossible.
To poke holes in your theory a bit, the covenant did not except humans at all. The banished did but they are a seperate organization and a rival to the covenant. And i don't believe we or the sanshiune would be able to concive a way to turn a contender class AI from its purpose. The logic plague was something bordering esoteric.
hype for this game was real. i remember going to see a movie and the theatre staff came in before the previews to sell halo 2 merch. felt like a decade long wait for halo 2 to come out after beating CE.
This is and will always be the best Halo game... everything you wanted to do in CE you can in Halo 2 and more.. the game play and story are still the best of any halo game to date.... im just shocked we've fallen so far
I wasn’t sure if I could bring up Marathon, especially since I’m fairly sure most marathon related things were in Halo:ce. When you brought up the fact that they didn’t want anybody talking to bungie staff that convinced me to bring up the possibility. Putting indecipherable whispers into a track is just the kind of ARG stuff Marathon usually does. I’m also considering the Forerunners similarities to the Jarro and the Floods cut origins in Marathon 2. Also, every time you put your channel icon on the screen, I get distracted by the marathon logo in the middle.
I thought the forerunners were? Isnt the Didact just an evolved form of human ancestor? Etc. unless i just made it up in my head and live in denial that 343 messed it all up?
@@fernandob2275 nah, 343 (and allegedly Bungie towards the end of Halo 3) made them their own species. The forerunners and ancient humanity were at war with each other in the Forerunner trilogy of books (which is actually a really decent series of books) written by Greg Bear. It is hinted at in different pieces of lore that the two species may share a distant, common ancestry, but never stated outright. As far as the canon goes, the are two distinct species.

The voice sounds, at least to me, like the Prophet of Truth. It’s possible that it’s a clip taken from one of his speeches that plays throughout Gravemind and High Charity. We would probably have a better idea as to what it is if Marty just actually helped us figure it out instead of just responding in his usual cryptic manner. Only tangentially related, but the fact that Halo 2 still holds up really well today as a genuinely fun, fantastic single player campaign despite the game's troubled development, really speaks to just how damn good of a game it was. I do still wish they had taken another year to finish it, or maybe even made it an XBox 360 launch title, but it still holds up ridiculously well. EDIT: Complete shot in the dark as I can imagine there's a good chance you've already tried this, but have you considered using AI tools that can isolate separate instruments and vocals to split the song up? I feel like it probably won't work due to how loud and complex the song is, but it's worth trying if you haven't, there's a ton of them and they can do a really good job isolating different sounds.

There might simply not be enough information in the the sound to recreate the actual words, even with the greatest software in the world. The only way to figure it out would be to find the original dev who put it in

@14:21 The prophets didn’t mis interpret the great journey they created the lie themselves. I think in one of the Greg Bear books there’s a part that tells the story of the prophets finding out the truth that humanity’s destiny is to reclaim the mantle of responsibility from the forerunners and they instead hide this truth and come up with the great journey as a way to keep the covenant together. I might be wrong on some of the details but it definitely wasn’t a mis interpretation. Cool vid and great work on the audio dude.
*Halo 2: Anniversary* is my number one favorite Halo game in the franchise. I would honestly still love to even see a *Halo 3: Anniversary* for it's 20th anniversary. ❤🔥👍🏻 Although I started playing Halo on the OG H2 in 2005 and had a blast with it back then, I prefer the remastered graphics over the original.

Hearing the part of this video go on about the old lore of the Forerunners/Covenant/HCWar casually makes me wish we had more videos that went into that instead of 343 lore videos. I'm not talking about the videos that are trying to prove obvious things of "It's very clear this was different" I mean just normal lore videos that act as if the 343 games didn't happen. Not to pretend like the 343 games are bad necessarily, but just to acknowledge the fact that the lore of those games, books, etc ARE in fact different, and because that was all back in 2001-2010, youtube/online communities like this were nowhere near as big so we don't have tons of youtube videos or lore pages that helpfully ACTUALLY go into what THAT game or THAT book were giving us or telling us, we only have endless videos that go into 343's version of the framing of those bits of lore, which just factually do not add up together no matter what you try and do. It's good for someone who wants to try and know 343 lore, but anyone who wants to know the Bungie lore? The lore of the best games/books in the series that got the series its name and popularity? They're just out of luck. Your only option is literally to go to wiki pages and go back decades to try and find what were MUCH less detailed (due to less people at the time managing them) pages that briefly gave the information of those actual things. If you're ever struggling for more Halo content, why not give it a shot? It's something no one else is doing and it gives you something to profit/make videos off of during the large dry spells Halo has with nothing to talk about. Not to be used as a "gotcha" in arguments that talks about "Look how WRONG this version is" or "This version is WAY better" but just so we have that original version at all as it was intended. As respect for the writers and developers at Bungie who made this series we all love. They deserve to have the universe they made be known.
Ahhh H2. I wouldn't have played ANY fps without it (still not that into fps).. My little cousin got the special edition when it came out (the metal case). Sadly, as soon as he started playing it, found out it affected his motion sickness.
Great discution! Which given my knowledge of audio engineering which isn't "Much" not like other feilds I know anyway... To unwrap those vocals you'll need an great AI or a legdary audio engeer... Netheir I doudt would work on something like this for the price we canaford anyway... However as AIs get better and better and more vcerired in skill sets and more common... I would think that an AI capble of unravling this mstery is very likely to exsit some day soon.
In the video it sounded like you said that you had the dialog partially decoded at different points during your attempts, perhaps the dialog was split into sections before post-processing effects were added in different configurations, perhaps it was even split up and reordered multiple times. As for my take on who the voice belongs to; considering it plays during a flood infested section of the game perhaps it's actually The Primordial speaking?

What I think is that there is a few possibilities: A kind of sound pentimento, missing something that even the original devs forgot to put in OR the more likely option that this requires other sounds overlayed to be properly heard. There is also the possibility that this is something like the N7 day last year with an image being printing into this (cant remember exactly what happened with that bit)

Don't know how helpful this is, but I feel fairly confident that that is the voice of the Prophet of Truth, or at the very least his voice actor, Michael Wincott. I mean, think about it: they had to get someone to record these lines so it would likely be someone already a part of the cast. And Truth is the most connected character to the Keyship besides Mendicant Bias. This is complete conjecture (really it all is) but if I had to guess, the hidden dialogue is meant to be a conversation between Mendicant and Truth. And what would be a big enough secret at this time for Bungie to bother hiding it in the game? That humans are the descendants of Forerunners. So my gut instinct is that it is Mendicant Bias telling the Prophet of Truth the, well, truth, and that's when he decides to bury the story.
I second this theory, it was my first thought upon listening to the voice. It has that raspy aspect that Wincott's voice has.

Unfortunately halo 2 and 3 passed me by. It was a bad time in my life so I didn't get into halo again till ODST and Reach. But I'll get to them at some point, it's nice to hear about them though.
I would play them immediately if you're still into gaming. Halo 2 came out when I was 7, and it's still one of my favorite games till this day. I didn't have the xbxo love component, I played with my cousins and brothers, and it was awesome. Halo 3 is goated. Played so much forge making maps and custom games. The golden days are gone, but there are a ton of discords to find people playing customs on mcc.
If you don't have mcc, it comes with a game pass, so it's only 15 bucks for a single month you could get through both of them.

It's an interesting mystery proposal, but despite that, as you mention in the video, there are conjectures and details that don't make much sense, I think that the sounds that are heard are indeed a voice, but more than transmitting a message with additional context as happens in both versions, it could be the equivalent of "ghostly voices", small modified phrases that at best, didn't count for more than what is already said in the song, or they could be guttural sounds modified to give a spectral sensation, perhaps being the reason why those sounds are not present in the anniversary version, I mention this because similar to cases like the symbols of Sandtrap or New Mombasa (where in the end they were given a specific meaning in recent media), it could also be the case that there simply isn't really a mystery and it's more about the collective fascination of the fandom to unravel a secret that may not have existed, despite that, the same discovery It's honestly fun.

I've heard about the voice in the early parts of the Mausoleum Suite. There's a message that you can hear if you play it backward, but I don't think I've come across this one. The message at the beginning can probably be found in a video on UA-cam; that's where I got it from. It contains some biblical references and other things, and it sounds exactly like the Prophet of Truth/Regret. It stumped me a bit because it seemed to be discussing the concept of one God, which is confusing since the Covenant worships multiple gods. You could do a video on that!
I have no experience in audio stuff so I'll just take a guess with a reasoning as to who is that voice, and what they may be conveying. A long read, so bare with me a bit.
The voice could actually be the Prophet of Truth. He may actually be relaying a message in his own language to perhaps an acquaintence, a secret message that none of the other Prophets must know about. Perhaps a different species than what there is in The Covenant. Or perhaps a fallen human, to be more specific, a human who went The Covenant way. Perhaps they were sent on a secret mission that only Truth knows, and this mission relies on the findings of the other Mendicant Bias parts. Perhaps Truth found information on Offensive Bias and a way to corrupt it like how The Precursor did to Mendicant Bias. Maybe they wanted to get Offensive Bias on their side to destroy humanity, but due to Arbiter stopping Truth in Halo 3, whoever was sent after Offensive did not manage to hear back from Truth, and would of had to abandon mission because it was already too risky, and contact with Truth being impossible.
It does sound like Truth in places...
For me it is definitely the voice of Truth. I came to the comments to see if anyone else had the same opinion.
To poke holes in your theory a bit, the covenant did not except humans at all. The banished did but they are a seperate organization and a rival to the covenant. And i don't believe we or the sanshiune would be able to concive a way to turn a contender class AI from its purpose. The logic plague was something bordering esoteric.

hype for this game was real. i remember going to see a movie and the theatre staff came in before the previews to sell halo 2 merch. felt like a decade long wait for halo 2 to come out after beating CE.

Putting indecipherable whispers into a track is just the kind of ARG stuff Marathon usually does. I’m also considering the Forerunners similarities to the Jarro and the Floods cut origins in Marathon 2.

@@fernandob2275 nah, 343 (and allegedly Bungie towards the end of Halo 3) made them their own species. The forerunners and ancient humanity were at war with each other in the Forerunner trilogy of books (which is actually a really decent series of books) written by Greg Bear. It is hinted at in different pieces of lore that the two species may share a distant, common ancestry, but never stated outright. As far as the canon goes, the are two distinct species.

The voice sounds, at least to me, like the Prophet of Truth. It’s possible that it’s a clip taken from one of his speeches that plays throughout Gravemind and High Charity. We would probably have a better idea as to what it is if Marty just actually helped us figure it out instead of just responding in his usual cryptic manner. Seriously, it’s gotten to the point of actually being frustrating to me.

Ah yeah, the song when you're holding out in the flood lab. I always wondered if it said something or was chaos language but I could never make anything out.
Only tangentially related, but the fact that Halo 2 still holds up really well today as a genuinely fun, fantastic single player campaign despite the game's troubled development, really speaks to just how damn good of a game it was. I do still wish they had taken another year to finish it, or maybe even made it an XBox 360 launch title, but it still holds up ridiculously well.
EDIT: Complete shot in the dark as I can imagine there's a good chance you've already tried this, but have you considered using AI tools that can isolate separate instruments and vocals to split the song up? I feel like it probably won't work due to how loud and complex the song is, but it's worth trying if you haven't, there's a ton of them and they can do a really good job isolating different sounds.

There might simply not be enough information in the the sound to recreate the actual words, even with the greatest software in the world. The only way to figure it out would be to find the original dev who put it in

I think in one of the Greg Bear books there’s a part that tells the story of the prophets finding out the truth that humanity’s destiny is to reclaim the mantle of responsibility from the forerunners and they instead hide this truth and come up with the great journey as a way to keep the covenant together.
I might be wrong on some of the details but it definitely wasn’t a mis interpretation. Cool vid and great work on the audio dude.

Hearing the part of this video go on about the old lore of the Forerunners/Covenant/HCWar casually makes me wish we had more videos that went into that instead of 343 lore videos. I'm not talking about the videos that are trying to prove obvious things of "It's very clear this was different" I mean just normal lore videos that act as if the 343 games didn't happen. Not to pretend like the 343 games are bad necessarily, but just to acknowledge the fact that the lore of those games, books, etc ARE in fact different, and because that was all back in 2001-2010, youtube/online communities like this were nowhere near as big so we don't have tons of youtube videos or lore pages that helpfully ACTUALLY go into what THAT game or THAT book were giving us or telling us, we only have endless videos that go into 343's version of the framing of those bits of lore, which just factually do not add up together no matter what you try and do. It's good for someone who wants to try and know 343 lore, but anyone who wants to know the Bungie lore? The lore of the best games/books in the series that got the series its name and popularity? They're just out of luck. Your only option is literally to go to wiki pages and go back decades to try and find what were MUCH less detailed (due to less people at the time managing them) pages that briefly gave the information of those actual things.
If you're ever struggling for more Halo content, why not give it a shot? It's something no one else is doing and it gives you something to profit/make videos off of during the large dry spells Halo has with nothing to talk about. Not to be used as a "gotcha" in arguments that talks about "Look how WRONG this version is" or "This version is WAY better" but just so we have that original version at all as it was intended. As respect for the writers and developers at Bungie who made this series we all love. They deserve to have the universe they made be known.

Great discution! Which given my knowledge of audio engineering which isn't "Much" not like other feilds I know anyway... To unwrap those vocals you'll need an great AI or a legdary audio engeer... Netheir I doudt would work on something like this for the price we canaford anyway... However as AIs get better and better and more vcerired in skill sets and more common... I would think that an AI capble of unravling this mstery is very likely to exsit some day soon.

In the video it sounded like you said that you had the dialog partially decoded at different points during your attempts, perhaps the dialog was split into sections before post-processing effects were added in different configurations, perhaps it was even split up and reordered multiple times.
As for my take on who the voice belongs to; considering it plays during a flood infested section of the game perhaps it's actually The Primordial speaking?
i wouldn't be surprised if its a random recording of someone's conversation that they just used.
