It was 40 years ago that I finished my degree in English at U.C. Santa Barbara with a seminar on South African literature. I specifically wrote a paper on Coetzee's Michael K., which I just finished rereading for the 1st time after 40 years. Thinking back in reflection, I realize how much Coetzee and his work have helped me become the person that I am and the virtues in life I still pursue. I am so thankful, and will never regret having chosen to study the humanities and social sciences as a young man, as I feel it helps strengthen my understanding of my society today. Coetzee showed me the beauty of life's simplicity, and gave me the ability to be critical of that which complexifies and distorts its beauty.

I love him so much. The most ethical and philosophical novelist to ever exist.
My Hero, to be precise enough.
Mine too. Briefly met him.
