Man I love your videos so much , very relaxing .I am 16 and im going to get my first dslr (the d200) because of you. I currently have an old canon point and shoot and hope I improve my photography when i get the d200.Thank You for your videos!
The D200 is an awesome camera ! Might not be the easiest to use because of the lack of live view, but it punches well above its price point for image quality and build quality. That's a keeper !
I got my d1x for $30 came with battery and charger. I experience the same issue of only being able to get 60 or so shots out of it. Not a big deal as it's something I don't shoot too frequently
Thanks for the detailed video. I just bought one for the same exact price as you : 70e. But I'm also faced with the same battery issue. I checked the vhbw Lithium battery you talked about, and it looks like the same exact thing as the Ni-MH version. I have no way of checking that it's truly Lithium. Were you able to make sure it's truly Lithium? Because even though you were able to shoot a lot of photos on this battery, it could still be an Ni-MH that has good capacity since it's new. Thanks for everything you do
I had the same doubts as you for the battery! I think VHBW even makes Ni-MH replacements for the D1H/X (or maybe is it someone else?) Anyway, the Ni-MH units indicate "Ni-MH" on the sticker, and the Lithium ones indicate "Li-ion" instead. That's a pretty neat visual confirmation, and I can confirm that the battery I got is lighter than the Ni-MH unit, and acts just like a Li-ion battery so I'd say the sticker is legit (the D1X sat on a shelf for the last month and a half, took some photos with it ast week end, battery was still topped off, even brand new Ni-MH units wouldn't have this behavior) Here's the link of the battery I bought, I'm 100% sure it's a legit Lithium-ion unit : electropapa.com/fr/batterie-remplace-nikon-en-4-pour-appareil-photo-1800mah-7-2v-li-ion-500268400 (sorry if the link sends for a french website)
It is kinda usable if you make the battery swap, either by getting the replacement I showed, or by doing the DIY mod I linked in the desc. Without these mods, they are indeed very challenging cameras to use for the battery life alone
It's an EN-4 Li-ion battery from VHBW I bought from ElectroPapa. I saw that it was also available on amazon, but I have no idea if those batteries are still available.
Got one of these with two original batteries through work. I had the MH-16 briefly, but it disappeared off my desk pretty quicky... Anyway, one of the batteries worked roughly as well as yours, the other would not take a charge at all, so I figured I had nothing to lose opening that one up. I already had 18650s and similar cells laying around, so I started thinking about a lithium conversion before I even found that guide you linked. Here in the States, getting 3rd party replacement EN-4s seems to be impossible. I did the convertion using mostly parts I had on hand, just ordered some cheap AA battery holders for a spring. I found that 16650's are a much better fit, at least in my body. The 18650's are snug and require a bit of force to slide in and out of the grip. On a side note, I found that a Digipower TC-U450 universal battery charger will charge unmodified EN-4's provided you hold the battery in place with rubber bands or zipties. I'm sure other universal chargers that are capable of outputting 8.4v will work too. That may be a viable alternative to buying the MH-16. As far as AF speed goes, I've been pitting it up against other Nikon bodies at work, including the D6. It's certainly able to drive AF/AF-D series lenses much faster than anything newer! I believe it uses the same focusing motor as the F5, which is legendary for the same reason. I should point out that I've noticed AF performance issues with the OEM battery, even on a full charge. No such issues with the lithium swapped pack
Yes, the focus motor is very much my expecience as well. When I was using this D1X initially, I had two Tokina AF-D lenses, and when driving my old 80-200 f/2.8, the torque of the focus motor was so high that it made the camera roll a little bit in my hands. Absolute insanity how fast that motor is. Much faster than my D700 or D2 cameras for sure.

Great video :) I’ve just found your channel! I’d love one of these to go with my d3

iv been wanting to buy one of the d1's for so long but the fact its not rly usable kind of turns me down lol,

The biggest problem with the VHBW Li-Ion EN-4 is that they can't be shipped to the USA. 😧
ah, well that sucks. I guess that's what the DIY stuff is important to share then
Can you please link the place where you got the battery from

Thank you I was listening to this at work so I didn't catch it
