  • I bought a Zager ZAD80CE Aura guitar. Here are my thoughts and a demo of how it sounds. I'm not promoting this guitar, just sharing my thoughts on it, so if you like how it sounds, go check out Zager Guitars and pick one up.

I’ve owned my Zager 80 OM CE AURA / N since 2019. (The OM has a thinner body and a deeper bought than what is being played here.)
It took 6 months to receive the guitar because there were none in stock. I spoke directly with Denny Jr when I called to order. He seemed very straight forward with me.
Like others here, I’ve never bought a guitar sight unseen. However, it was set up well when I received it and has a flawless and beautiful finish. For the first couple of years it was a bit stiff. Now, after 5 years of playing it daily, it’s super easy to play. I’ve gotten so that I don’t play any of my other guitars.
I’ve been more than happy with this guitar. The sound has continued to improve with each passing year. I’ve used it on two recordings and find it’s easy to get a good sound because of it’s a clear, full tone without too much high end. Each note stands out. It also sounds equally good being played hard with a flat pick and playing softer with fingerpicking.
After hearing about the laminate wood, I took a flashlight and checked the back and side wood. I can now see that the grain doesn’t match. Yes, it’s laminate, but you’d never know it from the tone. I have a vintage Martin that has beautiful tone but it’s too resonant to record well. I end up having to cut out frequencies to get it to ‘sit’ in the mix.
I’ve been played guitar for 55 years and toured for 20. I still play and record albums. My main guitar when I toured was a Augustino Dreadnaught guitar (small East Coast builder, still being made), which I chose over a Martin Dreadnaught because it had a more balanced tone. I’ve never chosen a guitar because of name or resale value.
I will say that a lot of the guitar demos Zager has on their website don’t do the guitar justice. I can’t speak to what changes may have taken place since I bought my guitar.
I enjoyed this video. Great voice!

I bought my Zager guitar about five years ago. Still happy with it. You have a very good voice and the guitar sounds beautiful. Thanks for putting this up.

Thank you for the independent review . I ordered a zad900ce and then realized almost all the reviews for the guitars are on zagers own channel . Had me a little worried 😂

Exactly! I had to scroll a bit to find an independent review of any Zager guitar. Almost all reviews have been from Zager themselves or someone connected to them.

I’ve played the exact same Zager guitar and the sound and feel is fantastic … this review is different than a lot of review videos and it speaks to how that guitar just makes you wanna be playin your music. Well done !

I was unsure about Zager when I first saw all the advertising about it. But, I came to realize that they make one of the best, laminated, Indonesian guitars that money can buy (all be it, at a much inflated price).

I've never heard of this company, and they are absolutely bombarding me with advertisements.

Got my 900 back in 2017 and it just keeps sounding better. I got a beautiful guitar that was well crafted.

Nice review! I just ordered the same guitar with the fishman aura a couple days ago. Thanks for easing my mind! It’s always a gamble buying a guitar you haven’t played, and plugged in first, I told myself never again! Well then I came across this on sale with the 30day try it, or return it for $0.00 shipping, I decided why not? Thanks!

Thank you. I loved listening to you play to get some idea what is possible with this guitar. I have had one for about a week. The guitar is awesome. The case, for me, is really heavy, kind of like a tank. While I am sure it protects the guitar really well, I would have liked to have had the option of a lighter weight case.

I mostly play electric. But when I play acoustic it's this guitar. I love it. It's the only one I have.

I've been playing guitar almost 40 years now. In that time I've owned many different brands, Martin, Gibson, Taylor, Fender, Alvarez, Ibanez, Washburn, Squier, Takamine. My Zager Zad900 is by far the best sounding, playing guitar I've ever owned. The craftsmanship and detail that Mr. Zager puts into his guitars is exquisite. Looks like a piece of art that you can play. I picked mine up at their little shop in Lincoln, Nebraska 12 years ago and Denny was still building each guitar by hand. A great family owned operation, the kind I like to support. ua-cam.com/users/shorts_5a1gIbA62w

Great demo. Although I would have liked to have seen a demo of the pickup.. The Aura pickup is one of the reasons it's priced higher than a similar model with a different more basic pickup.

It appears Zager sent a free guitar to anyone that has a UA-cam channel, trying to overcome their growing reputation of being tight-lipped about where their guitars are actually made, and a general sense that there is a lack of transparency, and a lot of smoke-and-mirrors marketing. Most folks that have received the free guitar say it's great. My question is: Why buy a guitar that everyone seems to be trying to justify, when for the same money you can have an American-made Martin, Gibson or Taylor? I bought a Zager, but had to return it because it came out of the box with high action and a buzzing open B string. Bad first impression that leads me to suspect all the talk of Nebraska and Denny checking every guitar is BS. The guitar, built in China, shipped from "Zager International" in Nevada. As someone noted below "All the Zager reviews are on their own channel." A channel not named Zager Guitars, but mysteriously named "Honest Guitar Reviews". One more thing to make me feel uneasy about this brand which is highly touted, though I never see any real musician playing one.

@@kenfriedland4603 There's no tonal depth to the guitar. Very middy. No boom. It's plastic sounding. The dude's strum and sing is excellent though. He brings the average guitar up.

Well there was nothing about the guitar that made me sit up and take notice, a little bling and little soul. There was no resonance that indicated this guitar is set up correctly. The singing, however, was the highlight.

Made in Indonesia. Final checks and setup in USA. Buddy of mine got one and the action was set way high. The saddle needed sanding. I’ll stick with my $1200 Martin. But these do look very pretty.
