Oh YES !!! You hit the nail on the... I have been looking and asking sellers on the chinese site why these connectors are so expensive and why do they not use these MMCX connectors ! It abslolutely looks the way to go, please !!
The button is a nice redundancy. Imagine being at a race and the previous race just happened to break your smart port wire's connection. Because of this, your tbs unify reverts back to factory settings. Now your next race is coming up and you don't have the ability to change the channel through SA because you don't have time to fix the wire break. It's nice to have the button to go back to for that emergency. It happened to me. That's why I'm glad there is still the button to go to as a backup.
I saw one randomly one day and immediately bought the feeder. Now it's common to see three or four of them dive-bombing each other as they try to eat from it. THEY ARE AMAZING.
TBS UNIFY PRO VTX has only one white wire for audio or smart audio , how would i connect this to a kiss fc in order to have both audio and smart audio with taranis ?. There is not such issue with TRAMP HV VTX AS THIS ONE HAVE 2 WIRES ONE FOR TELEMETRY AND THE OTHER FOR AUDIO
I agree with all your points. But you know what would be awesome? If Runcam built their cameras with a VTX integrated in them. When are we going to see that? Maybe add that on the Runcam Split board?
vTX is too important to integrate because if it's not excellent then you're screwed. I want RunCam to make great cameras for me. I want TBS to make great vTX for me. I even hesitate on something like the Typhoon but Moto has such a good track record with hardware design I think he probably got the vTX right.
I started with a cricket, but it always worried me to stick my fingers between the props to power it on and change channels. Switched to unify and it's awesome. Glad this feature is catching on. Would also love a different connector for the antenna.
After going to smart audio there is absolutely no chance I am going back! Great vid though I have to say that the stackable VTX is a huge thing for me. Maybe I am not building the ultra slim frame setups I see out there but having the VTX in the stack is so much easier that finding a place to land it somewhere protected and secured. I actually (regrettably after BF F3 came out) bought a pair of Diatone SP3's because they were stackable, though now their OSD function is obsolete. I now use Unify Pro's with 3D printed stack holder for them.
Agreed, I love changing the vTx from my Taranis, but thats only KISS and BF right? I dont think I can use RF and change the vTx from my Taranis can I? So its a FC_Firmware+vTX I think
So, if the smart audio is input over the audio line, can we also wire an external mike to that pad? Is the audio input pad on a vtx like the Rush Tank Mini just another breakout of the same audio input? If so that would save many of us upgrading the vtx just to get audio input or a built in mike.. Edit: Answered my own question: team-blacksheep.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/4000100084-tbs-smartaudio-what-it-is-and-how-it-works
Hoping someone can help answer this question. Currently in the middle of a build. Building a 5” ANALOG FPV with ExpressLRS 2.4GHz I’ve got some confusion around choosing a VTX. Should I be choosing a 2.4GHx VTX or a 5.8GHZ VTX Looking at the Rush Tank Solo VTX (1.6W) which is a 5.8GHz Would a 5.8GHz VTX limit my range or should I be using it?
Just a heads up, that cable on the Unify is a JST-GH and is a 5 wire cable. I got mine from Pitchrollyaw and it came super quick. The Lumenier VTX uses the same plug as well. I've had to replace mine once before and had to do the JST hunt :(
Hi, i usually fly freestyle solo with Eachine FT200 but not much range and can't fly with other's might just get the Unify Pro unless i get a better recommendation
Hey were are the affilliated links so i can find these transmitters with out the effort of searching every were this is a time saver for me and helps both of us.
Hey Joshua, I have the Rush VTX v1.1 which apparently has the pit mode, but I cant receive a signal when engaged, and it still get hot in this mode. The mmcx connector is a good idea, but im struggling to get an Ariel with this connector on it. The pigtails that come with these things are way to long to fit on any frame I have owned. So im having to make my own ariel which is a pain in the arse. Also I agree with you that a stackable vtx takes too much room. I thought it would be a good idea until I tried to fit it in my frame. Maybe some day we'll get a new standard in boards where they are longer (36mm x 56mm) perhaps. This would definitely bring our stack heights down. P.S. like the hotel room, definitely an improvement.
Help plz. am a newbie. I have a pixhawk 4 and a T8GS v2. I also have a TS832vtx. But I didn't think about a transmitter for the controller. now I am wondering what to use for video quad. could you tell me what you feel would be a good choice? Price is a main problem.
Hope you have the new matek VTX in a round up but prob not. Hoping it will be end of all for me, solder pads, stackable, easy to read leds, buttons come outta side, bf osd support and its cheap compared to top dogs! :)
Did you test the PandaRC VT5804 Pro? No smart audio but SBUS to switch channels. But at least MMCX and under 20 bucks. EDIT: Mr. Steele made a video some time ago about different transmitters and receivers and the audio channels they are using.
ZeroFPV I've just received the pandarc vtx in the post 10mins ago! It's actually for a wing but no instructions, so no idea how to set up the sbus link. Need to look into that.
where your sma pigtail clips onto the actual VTX.... Mines has a ball of glue on it. and not moved around, I get horrible video as well, I think its garbage from factory man, I am putting capacitors on power cable today and going to see if this helps bad video.
Hey Josh. when you say its remote controlled, does it mean you can change power to the vtx while your flying? or are you saying that while its on the ground changing channels is easier to do with the TBS or tramp?
so, where is the list? I thought for sure I saw a list on this... also, how do you prevent interference with the antenna bulkhead connector coming in contact with the carbon frame?
That is only rarely an issue. I have personally never had a noise issue with a bulkhead mount, but I do know other people who had noise until they isolated the antenna. The way I mount the antenna, coming out from the back of the top plate, solves the issue. You can just tape or heat shrink around the connector. If you actually use a bulkhead mounting hole, I don't know how you could isolate it, since the threads themselves will make contact.
could you possibly do a vtx repair video??? please??? I've got a dozen video transmitters with broken ufl, sma etc connectors... help. if you don't have time I completely understand
Hey josh I have a question: It doesn't belong to this video but, I have got 4s batteries recently and now my quad has an AUW of ~620-630grams. Is it maybe too heavy or is this weight ok?
That's an interesting idea. Would allow plugging direct to your goggles for maintenance. People would object to the weight and size, but it's honestly a very clever idea.
and we have a "remove before flight" situation :) the female jack may be at the end of a cable that is solder on the vtx can be mounted anywhere with zip ties or a new hole on canopies
I fly Tramp HV in all my quads, because you can change channels via telemetrie and it still has audio out. The second reason is only tramp hv and tbs unify are allowed on Race-Events here in germany
Josh can you talk more about the audio signals? I have a RMRC VTX with built in audio that doesn't work with a realacc 5808 diversity module and yet works perfectly fine with a friends LaForge diversity module. Is there a way to switch either the VTX or the the VRX module so they match?
No, there isn't any way to change it without changing the hardware. Basically, the vTX puts the audio signal on a certain subcarrier frequency, and if the vRX isn't listening on that same frequency, it can't hear the audio.
Higher-end vTX will transmit on both subcarriers at the same time, and higher-end vRX may listen on both subcarriers at the same time. But lower-end ones only listen on one subcarrier and if it's the wrong one, there isn't anything you can really do.
What's up Josh I got some tmotor f40pros 2400kv. They are so smooth but it seems like everything got more sensitive for the gyro almost had to turn on a notch filter but when I turned up my idol little bit more I think it worked it all out and I turned them down to 1040 and they don't run at all good like the Emax does just thought I would share emax sucks though lol
Hey Joshua, as always, great videos. I have a doubt that maybe you can help clarify. After watching your videos on Betaflight F3 FC and using in conjunction with TBS Unify for smart audio function, I incorporated them on my Chameleon build. I wanted to able to view settings through my Goggles. For some reason I cannot get the menu to pop up. The OSD seems to works. I get VBAT, Timers, mAh etc. But, when I Yaw left and Pith forward to see the menu, nothing pops up (just get 2 beeps). I later saw your video on LUA scripts and installed. Works great! That is what I will use for PID and VTX tuning. That being said, I am still curious as to why it will not come up on my goggles.
Thanks for replying. I wish it were that simple. I did center throttle + yaw left but I only get a double beep and have yet to see a menu pop up. Oh well, I'm glad the LUA script works.
smart audio sounds awesome but I use my audio channel when I fly, you said "in some cases" smart audio can be used with a mike, which cases are these ?, thanx for the awesome vids, and wait for the rest of the roundup
Yeah the sma connector is heavy but how many 5.8G antennas come with some other connector. So the choise is between a hevy connector against a light connector plus a heavy connector :o dont quite understand how it would be bad to have the sma straight on the vtx as we've used to? :o
And the L band.. Yeah it is illegal in the US. But other countries (example in europe) the 5.8G band is not the band with the highest transmission power limits for hobbyists. For example in finland the L band drops in an area where you could transmit with higher levels than 25mW without any frequency hopping protocols. You have to have some EU certificates for the device though, but my point is that the L band is not inherently bad in nature :)
Joshua Bardwell that is true. If one can not get away mounting the antenna straight to the vtx then it makes sense. But i usually mount the antenna straight out the back and have room for the vtx so im happy there are still straight sma out vtx's out there
The only 3 reasonable options IMO are a $nothing shit-camera-vtx combo with a whip that you can hotglue on anything with a 5V line, a tramp or a unify. And yeah people who don't use smartaudio/tramps don't realize they will never, ever want to go back. MMCX on the PCB makes stacking a nightmare if it's not 35x35. IPEX is a brand, u.fl is the type.
Hey Josh I really appreciate your scientific approach to the hobby. I know people whine and criticize, but i feel you do try to cover as much as possible, especially in your equipment "shootouts" Question for you, do you thinl you can do a 2.4 ghz antenna shootout, similiar to the one you did for vtx antennas? I find it strange that most people are very specific when it comes to vtx antennas, but almost everyone is satisfied with just a simple dipole. Wouldnt it be effective to have a diversity setup running a 2.4 helical or clover alongside a 5dbi dipole? Why or why not? Just playing devils advocate here, and I know you really get down to the nitty gritty on these things and run the numbers as well. Thanks for all of the content, I've learned a bunch from you. (Also, don't feel bad for monetizing your channel. You share a very in depth perspective that is very different from other material that is out there. I noticed that one of your viewers had paid you money for a 1 on 1 troubleshooting session. If you're not doing this already, I would be offering something like that for people out there who could use that sort of help on Skype or something. I know a lot of people are going to say "it pays to learn doing it yourself" and to a certain extent they are right. But there are also people out there who wouldn't have a problem paying a small fee (like any other service out there) to save the time and aggravation, do a build or troubleshoot a problem the right way, right away. Paying $50 or $100 bucks sometimes beats destroying a piece of equipment you waited a few weeks in the mail for, at least I think so.)
Even with a simple dipole, the range of a control link is so much further than that of a video link that there is less incentive to put a specialized antenna on the controller.
Joshua i have a tip; post a link in the description to the other videos you referenced in the video. I wanna see this clip and then I have to scrub through this video and look for the thumbnails.
I put all the linked videos in Cards. You don't have to scrub for the thumbnails. Just click the "I" icon in the upper-right of the video to see all cards attached to the video.
You wouldn't rate an easy plug in and out so that if you break the aerial or knock it off you can just have another transmitter in the bag and just undo the zip tie and plug the new one in.
Of the half dozen different transotters ive bought over the years Ive tried to standardise on a three pin one that is on an Echine TR526 but i have no idea what the exact name of the plug .Its is a stunning tree bit difficult to get that in a ot dry Sydney climate were we are in Mid winter with a daytime temp 0f 24deg C
Most piolets are flying by themselves like for instance I set my VTX channel and never touch it. I have a quad with smart audio and honestly it's not really a big deal to me. In fact a VTX in one of my quads supports it but I didn't even bother setting it up because I never need to change my VTX settings.
I had lots of problems with noise on my video with the Unify HV. Customer support just gave me the run around and was no help. I will never buy a TBS vtx again. Just wanted to share. At their price... very disappointed!!!
I would hope the channel does not change until you tell it to apply or something or it could be annoying. Would be cool if they could transmit smart audio to the receiver module about what channel to change to.
Why is it called "smart audio" when it has nothing to do with audio, why not call it "smart VTX" instead, since it allows VTX changes. Very educational channel.
They do put out some heat, but they're meant to be air cooled. So sitting, powered up, yes, they'll warm up quite a bit. I believe they shut themselves down when they get too hot. But I have several and never even saw that happen.
Hoping someone can help answer this question. Currently in the middle of a build. Building a 5” ANALOG FPV with ExpressLRS 2.4GHz I’ve got some confusion around choosing a VTX. Surprisingly I just broke my VTX and I've been learning as much as possible about them before I buy a new one. This has been very informative. Thanks!
i did the exact same with my Rex HD whoop and can't find anything that tells me what new one to get
Should also be hammer resistant
SeekND FPV haha
SeekND FPV came here just to look for this comment lol

Joshua love the humming birds my fav birds! You lucky man having them in your garden! Wow!😮😮😮😮😳😳😳👍🏻

Wow nice hummingbird shots!
Yeah, nice birds, I like them.
Want to know where Joshua Bardwell is living, state, region?
Tennessee.
Love me some smokies hiking!
Thanks for the answer. Did not even know it has hummingbirds in Tennessee, as you always say, you gonna learn something today.
Can we get an update please? I am looking at a high efficiency one that doesn't waste battery power.
TBS UNIFY PRO VTX has only one white wire for audio or smart audio , how would i connect this to a kiss fc in order to have both audio and smart audio with taranis ?. There is not such issue with TRAMP HV VTX AS THIS ONE HAVE 2 WIRES ONE FOR TELEMETRY AND THE OTHER FOR AUDIO
is a eachine vtx good? and also is soldiering your antenna to the vtx better for a much better reception? Thank you..
I agree with all your points. But you know what would be awesome? If Runcam built their cameras with a VTX integrated in them. When are we going to see that? Maybe add that on the Runcam Split board?

I even hesitate on something like the Typhoon but Moto has such a good track record with hardware design I think he probably got the vTX right.
Matt Chamberlain Vtx die too often for this to work.
One can dream.
just add it to there new dvr board lol
I started with a cricket, but it always worried me to stick my fingers between the props to power it on and change channels. Switched to unify and it's awesome. Glad this feature is catching on. Would also love a different connector for the antenna.
After going to smart audio there is absolutely no chance I am going back! Great vid though I have to say that the stackable VTX is a huge thing for me. Maybe I am not building the ultra slim frame setups I see out there but having the VTX in the stack is so much easier that finding a place to land it somewhere protected and secured. Most modern vTX don't share mic and SmartAudio any more. They'll have separate audio and data input.
The more I think about it the more it makes sense. Gonna have to try the AGC mike on my Tank Ultimate, If It doesn't work i'll get the Mini for it.
Hoping someone can help answer this question. Currently in the middle of a build.

Does anyone know the FatShark Teleporter audio sub carrier? I always get major static or hum when trying to listen in on the runcam mic
Is it still illegal to have a 72 ch vtx, even if you just use the normal 40 channels?
Hi, i usually fly freestyle solo with Eachine FT200 but not much range and can't fly with other's might just get the Unify Pro unless i get a better recommendation
yeah you can't go wrong with the unify. I use the unify HV race version
Hey were are the affilliated links so i can find these transmitters with out the effort of searching every were this is a time saver for me and helps both of us.
In tomorrow's video.
Will be looking foward to it.
Does increasing the mW output increases the power surge or amp pull?
Well look at that. I am in the market for a new vTX. Thanks, this is perfect timing!!
Hey Joshua, I have the Rush VTX v1.1 which apparently has the pit mode, but I cant receive a signal when engaged, and it still get hot in this mode. They are amazing. This hummingbird feeder is the best.
We learned so much from you ... what to buy mostly.
Help plz. am a newbie. I have a pixhawk 4 and a T8GS v2. I also have a TS832vtx. But I didn't think about a transmitter for the controller. now I am wondering what to use for video quad. could you tell me what you feel would be a good choice? Price is a main problem.

benii The Matek is a great vtx with Tramp smart audio and is stackable. I hope it made the list.
Did you test the PandaRC VT5804 Pro? No smart audio but SBUS to switch channels. But at least MMCX and under 20 bucks.
EDIT: Mr. Steele made a video some time ago about different transmitters and receivers and the audio channels they are using.
ZeroFPV Here's a rebrand. 1012007.kancart.com/item_detail/632#!detail
I wish everyone would use that mmcx connector instead of the ufl
ZeroFPV I've just received the pandarc vtx in the post 10mins ago! It's actually for a wing but no instructions, so no idea how to set up the sbus link. Need to look into that.
My bad, it's the VT5801 I've received, still got sbus, but Sma adapter.
Joshua I'm wondering does the vtx in the wizard 220s have problems because after my second flight it stopped working :)
LEÓNS FPV did you check the ipx connector?
Yes nothing loose or burnt it looks ok
where your sma pigtail clips onto the actual VTX.... Mines has a ball of glue on it. and not moved around, I get horrible video as well, I think its garbage from factory man, I am putting capacitors on power cable today and going to see if this helps bad video.
Asik Drone I suggest you guys give the Matek vtxv s go. It's only 30 bucks and a step above the stock wizard vtx and it has smart audio.
No power going in to vtx this stopped as I said after second flight luckily I was landed when happened
Pls link to the second part
Hey Josh. when you say its remote controlled, does it mean you can change power to the vtx while your flying? or are you saying that while its on the ground changing channels is easier to do with the TBS or tramp?
You can't change while you're flying. You can easily change on the ground without ever having to touch the quad.

your newest big fan from the caribbeaN
Love the MMCX! That's the one that was used on the OpenPilot Revolution for their 433mhz TLM, loved it!
Hey josh I have a question: It doesn't belong to this video but, I have got 4s batteries recently and now my quad has an AUW of ~620-630grams. Is it maybe too heavy or is this weight ok?
That's tolerable to me. My freestyle copters typically come in that weight with HD cam. If it's that heavy without HD cam it's a bit of a porker.
Joshua Bardwell OK! No its with a HD cam on it and i think it flies perfect so...thank you!
matek now also has a vtx with smart something FC controll review?
Are there any long range vtx systems that fit a 5 inch or 2 inch quad e.g. on lower frequencies?
Yes you can use a 2.4 GHz or 1.3 GHz video transmitter. The main disadvantage is that the antennas are much larger.
@@JoshuaBardwell Thx! 2.4 will probably have interference from the radio controllers? 1.3 I will check out.
There is no list?
What do you think
2.5 mono jack on all VTX's instead of pit mode, if plugged in no transmission & clean video to pilots
3 seconds delay before starting transmitting when unplugged

Joshua Bardwell : thanks Josh, good to know about the higher end ones using both at least. 👍🏼
Hi Joshua just been catching up on your videos. Like your style and great content well presented like the technical content
Thank you.
Now that u mention CL_Racing F4.. Are you going to be doing a review on one?
How do you remote control vtx if you don't have a Taranis or Betaflight OSD?
+Carl Westman there is a smartphone app that can do it over USB.
Joshua Bardwell Ah nice! 😁
What's up Josh I got some tmotor f40pros 2400kv. so you dont show witch products actually meet you criterias? hmmm i know of no transmitter that tick all the "boxes" do you?
Peter Kornum did you listen to the beginning? He will tell you tomorrow
Sloth FPV so looong i forgot.... Linda click bait
Kinda

wait... don't these vtx..es use 5.5mhz audio carrier? there are 6 and 6.5? I thought OIRT won over CCIR...

If the SMA is directly on the vTX then there is less flexibility where you can mount the vTX.
Joshua Bardwell that is true. If one can not get away mounting the antenna straight to the vtx then it makes sense. But i usually mount the antenna straight out the back and have room for the vtx so im happy there are still straight sma out vtx's out there
loved the dress 👍
The only 3 reasonable options IMO are a $nothing shit-camera-vtx combo with a whip that you can hotglue on anything with a 5V line, a tramp or a unify. And yeah people who don't use smartaudio/tramps don't realize they will never, ever want to go back.
MMCX on the PCB makes stacking a nightmare if it's not 35x35. IPEX is a brand, u.fl is the type.
I dont mind watching the humingbirds haha. Oh and what is your sugar water ratio? cause you seem to have a lot of hummers
You'd have to ask my partner. She makes the syrup.
What an ironic time to release a vtx video
Hey Josh I really appreciate your scientific approach to the hobby. I know people whine and criticize, but i feel you do try to cover as much as possible, especially in your equipment "shootouts"
Question for you, do you thinl you can do a 2.4 ghz antenna shootout, similiar to the one you did for vtx antennas?
Joshua Bardwell I learnt something today!
You wouldn't rate an easy plug in and out so that if you break the aerial or knock it off you can just have another transmitter in the bag and just undo the zip tie and plug the new one in.
Well, that's the MMCX connector isn't it?
LOL "You just invented the TBS PowerCube haven't you?"
Great interesting vid too! :)
I'm sure this question must have been asked in the past, why are you always in a hotel? Just wondering.
I travel a lot for my day job.
Part two please !! Looking forward to blowing up your affiliate account ! Thanks Josh
Am I the only one who thinks the OSD is a bad place to change vTx channels/bands? :D
This is one reason why the Lua script is so great. But you can just autoscan the goggles too.
yeah, never actually used an OSD for that, always did it on my Transmitter (in this case my DX9)
I would hope the channel does not change until you tell it to apply or something or it could be annoying. Would be cool if they could transmit smart audio to the receiver module about what channel to change to.
It doesn't move to the new channel/band until you tell it to so no problem there.
Steel armor plated for multigp
I did lierne something today , So thank you
i love the unify pro, but the pigtail is so annoying -__-
"If you're by yourself in an empty field with no-one else around"
What do you mean "If"? Isn't that the norm? :D
can we get a link? just jabbing. lol
Links will be in tomorrow's roundup video.
I ❤️bardwell
If I were female I would mount you.
it's pretty simple. get tbs unify pro, set it up to 800mw an you'll be a happy camper
Yeah, but nobody else around you will be as you blast them out of the air.
100% direct solder pads, couldn't care less about pit mode, in fact if it makes it cheaper then I'm happy for them to ditch it.
By the way, IPEX connectors aren't even 5~6 Ghz rated. They are rated up to 4Ghz. Talking of losses....
Anything that gives me a good signal :)
if you are gonna be going to race events get a TBS unify or an immersionrc tramp cause a lot of events won't allow you to use anything else
Why is it called "smart audio" when it has nothing to do with audio, why not call it "smart VTX" instead, since it allows VTX changes. Very educational channel.
Because the original Unify used the audio line as the input, since it didn't have any dedicated data line.
Danger Drone V2 With jamming capabilities
Perfect timing #mgpilluminati
Builtin mic, like the fx/ft vtxs have
Yeah, that's a good point that I overlooked because I don't fly with audio. Thanks for pointing it out.
???? must have: variable output power.... nice to have: adjustable output power ?????
you tell me the difference ????
I address this in the video. It's an editing mistake. You did ... watch the video, right?
just buy Unify pro :)
And use Joshua's trick of creating a solder bridge on he IPEX connector for stability.
What's this now?
+2 "What's this now?"
I have a new unify pro, works great upto 200mw but after that it just over heats, junk.
They do put out some heat, but they're meant to be air cooled. So sitting, powered up, yes, they'll warm up quite a bit. I believe they shut themselves down when they get too hot. But I have several and never even saw that happen.
🔨😜
Nothing above 25mW...apparently.
800mW ftw lol
If wanna race often they require tramp hv
Just buy the TBS UNIFY PRO 5.8GHz HV, just 2 clicks away from not fucking up anyone around you :)
Lol 4:15
:)
Hoping someone can help answer this question. Currently in the middle of a build.
Building a 5” ANALOG FPV with
ExpressLRS 2.4GHz
I’ve got some confusion around choosing a VTX.
Should I be choosing a 2.4GHx VTX or a 5.8GHZ VTX
Looking at the Rush Tank Solo VTX (1.6W) which is a 5.8GHz
Would a 5.8GHz VTX limit my range or should I be using it?
I'd be surprised if you could even find a 2.4 GHz vTX. 5.8 GHz will probably be what you should get.
