“Funny accent”:) when I moved to Belgium I started learning Dutch, which means I learnt the Flemish pronunciation. When I heard classic Dutch for the first time in my life, I thought that was a funny accent 😅
Now I appreciate both accents, they are both beautiful:)
👍👍👍
After a lengthy discussion with American tourists in Italy who insisted there was no country by the name 'Neverland', I gave in and switched to 'Holland' :) Bedankt voor al je mega interessante video's!
Dank! 👍
The History Hustler !? Damn , I should thought of that. Killer name.
😎
Could you do the linguistic differences between my language and Dutch, and maybe include Flemish?
Great video by the way. 👍
Edit: Thanks for talking about Luxembourg city
Thank you and you are welcome. In the future I might do some more 'explained' videos about language differences.
I could confuse Nevernever Land with The Netherlands, when I am high!
I wonder what we would call a language forming between Netherland immigrants, languages mixing from neighboring countries, and Dutch itself.
Yes, perhaps it's good I made this video haha.
You are an excellent speaker and presenter! And, of course, the subject is fascinating too.
Thank you :)
great video. one addition though, I think other countries refer to our country as 'The Netherlands' because we are a kingdom consisting of 4 different countries, the mainland Netherlands, Aruba, Curacao and St. Maarten.
I see, thanks!
At around 4 min you ask, "Who cares?" I care. And probably everyone who's watching. I am very curious as to the correct names for the countries of this region as it has always confused me.
Thanks!
I know I commented on this video before but Behind the Luxembourg videos this is probably my favourite videos of yours.
Hahah, great memories of this episode. Not that popular, but hey, I had fun making it. Glad you liked it, thanks!
Kingdom of the Netherlands is know in Poland as Holland (Holandia) and the Dutch people are refereed to as Holendrzy. I think that it comes from the times of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth when Dutch merchants came to trade with Poles in the city of Gdansk, and when Poles asked them where are they from, most of the responded with Holland.
Interesting insight you give us there!
Grappig zo ✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻
👍
Lols and if you say you are from Holland they might call you a “Hole”
So true...
Den Haag is my favourite city in The Netherlands.
👍
Ah yes a fellow Niederländer. You got yourself a sub
Thanks, nice to read!
Hi like this one. There is a lot to be said about our little country. As for Dutch, there are a lot of examples where it's being used in an incorrect way. Could it start with the fact that the medieval Low countries spoke a language that's known as "Diets"?
Next to that there is the story of the Pennsylvania Dutch who, as far as I could find are in fact Germans (Deutsch) and there were so many of them that at the vote of the national US Language, german came just a few votes short.
Then there is still the french and spanish names for the Netherlands; les pays bas, Los países bajos
And last but not least, we too export Holland as a trade mark, because wherever dutch fans go, they call "Holland, Holland" ;-) and not Nederland ;-)
But keep up the good work, as a history Buff I love the things you "teach ;-) "
Thanks for your message, Ed! Actually, I know someone who's name is Maes which most likely derives from Maez! Spanish influence.
@@HistoryHustle There is also a river called "Maas" in Nederland (Holland, The Netherlands, Les Pays Bas :-)
its funny when he starts about belgium the undertitles just say 'microsoft'
Serious? Lol.
@@HistoryHustle for me it does for some reason. i guess auto translate had a oops moment there.
Interesting to note Pennsylvania Dutch, is actually German ( west franconian).
Didn't know this. Thanks for sharing.
Do you want to talk about your experience with Spanish travellers Stefan? Or is it still too fresh?😂
no comment haha
Thanks for the sidenote about climate :)
Somehow I always figured Dutch was derived from Diets, was I mistaken?
Can't tell. Diets is the concept of NL/BE/LX together. The Benelux as you will. It's also used by far-rights groups from Flandres for some reason.
Honestly I'll say Holland instead of the Netherlands sometimes just because it's 2 syllables shorter.
Fair enough...
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 ik zat voor je in 1G1
Netherlands in Latin= Belgica
Interesting.
@@HistoryHustle New Netherland in Amerika heette feoderatio Belgica
In my country we have a funny name for Germans instead of calling them Nijemci(eng. Germans) some people call them Švabe(name for people from Swabia in my language)
Interesting, thanks for sharing. Now I am curious, where are you from? Czech Republic, Croatia?
@@HistoryHustle yes,I am from Croatia

A guy on my baseball team is Croatian and told me that his grandfather never moved but changed nationalities four times in 60 years.
In Waloonia and in Brussels ( but if French dominates lots of languages are spoken. Historically Brussels was the capital of Brabant and Dutch-speaking) French is spoken like in France except for some words. Like numbers. In Paris 90 is quatre-vingt dix (80+10), in Belgium 'nonante'. Historically there are dialects in Waloonia, various ones. The most difficult is the one from Liege. As far as Belgium is concerned it is complicated. After 1830, a lot of Orangists (faithful to the King of Holland) were French speakers. For economic reasons. And also because the elite in Belgium, both North and South were French-speaking. Even today some French-speakers support the idea of a confederation of the Low Countries (Benelux). The majority felt as Belgian but now that Flemish people want indépendance, they are a bit orphans with no national feeling...
