It’s a little “cover band-y” but honestly, I expected to hate it. I think it’s a mistake for them to play the song. Maybe on rare occasion? He did a good job. I mean, like, the best possible performance would be really good. But no one. NO ONE, could do a great job on this song. The song and Layne are like peanut butter and jelly. Or, two Hydrogens and an Oxygen. Or, ink and paper. Ya know? They just “are.” No proper comparison exists.
@@loud_laughter yeah but you could also say that about a ton of Alice songs. I'm glad they play all the great songs from the era with Layne. I saw them in Seattle and I was so stoked when they started playing Love Hate Love. So I for one am grateful they still play it. No body can sing like Layne but William is great in his own right and has his own style. I can dig it.
He did about as good of a job as anyone could. Nobody is gonna be able to match Layne's tone, control, power, distortion, etc. and we always have the original recordings to go back to.
We shouldstop this discussion. No singer can be emulated by anyone because there are so many factors to consider. Duvall is to be credited for having the vocal technique and doing Layne's work with great respect. Obviously we can't compare the performance because William doesn't have the same background as Layne. Much of Layne's magic comes from the honesty that he presents in his suffering. Alice in Chains as a band sounds totally different because the mental process of the band is different. They are more mature and have lived other experiences that channel them through their performance. I think it's important that we can understand that and do not take credit away from William, a singer who has allowed us to continue enjoying this magnificent legacy. Each one is unique in its own way. RIP Layne, Thank you Will!
Very well said. I honestly had a hard time ‘getting to know’ AIC with Duvall b/c Layne was so damn unique, and the harmonies he & Jerry produced were on such a different/higher level. However, understanding and appreciating the great talents that Jerry, Sean & Mike are, one has to know choosing & accepting William as their solid frontman was not only extremely hard emotionally but very well thought out. Layne’s ‘shoes’ will never be filled. William just had to wear his own and make his own path. Cantrell wouldn’t set that dude up for failure....he cares way too much about the music.
Massive Alice In Chains fan here, since the early 90s. I never got to see them with the original lineup because I was just a little kid. Say what you want about William, but he's part of the reason I was finally able to see the band many years later. I love, Layne but you have three other talented guys that still deserved to keep playing amazing music together, and shouldn't have to quit just because layne couldn't fight his demons. I remember Sean Kinney saying something along the lines, "I want my band back." (around the time of LS passing). Good for them!
William Duvall is the perfect choice to follow in Laynes foot steps in Alice In Chains....good job Jerry for finding somebody who could do these AIC songs justice!!! Layne is a hard act to follow! Thank you William for putting your heart into Layne & Alice In Chains music ❤️❤️
And he does it with such respect & class. He's never tried to sound like Layne & that alone makes me adore him! These songs are NOT easy songs to sing. Ask any singer. Layne was one of a kind. But, so is William. Just on a different playing field. Layne was the beginning & Will's gonna be the one til the end, God willing.
I saw Jerry on his first solo tour on Dickson Street, Fayetteville, AR…. He played some tunes off of his Boggy Depot, and he sprinkled in some Alice as well. I couldn’t figure out who in the hell was singing Laynes parts, then my buddy pointed out this guy behind the speaker stacks with a mic. It was William, and he fronted the opening band at that time. I was f@cling blown away at how he could carry his parts so similarly to Layne. I’m so glad he has helped carry Alice through to new generations.

Couple big differences...will is amazing but hes not channeling the emotion layne had, will sounds more "singy" also laynes scream and overall voice was much more emotional.
I think Will is a really really great singer, no doubt about it, and his job with AIC is amazing. But there's a difference between Layne and him, and this song explains it: William great vocal technic, but Layne was ALL HEART. So, this one, in my opinion, is a very very good cover.
Well, technically you're exactly right, but also wrong at the same time, hahaha. What I mean is, William IS literally doing a cover (a premium quality one, btw) of Layne's prewriten vocal part, and Mike is also doing a cover of Starr's prewriten bass part, while the rest of the band, well, they're just playing the song like they always have, since they also wrote it themselves. Obviously I do get your point though, haha. ✌🏼✊🏼😌
You explained it perfectly. Watch Layne sing it live and he is pouring every single ounce of his heart and soul into the performance, leaving absolutely nothing in the tank. DuVall is focusing more on hitting the notes than channelling that feeling. To be fair it's an impossible task to replace Layne though, so... it is what it is.
The pain is where Layne channeled his siging. I think thats what touched us all. But I still love alice in chains, Id rather hear them making music than no music at all!
