@@oddguy12 Commercials are great... but definitely don't watch them yet IMO! The "Portal 2 Comic" though is safe and commonly recommended between Portal and Portal 2, though I think that's more debatable.

I don't think a lot of the people complaining about puzzle solve time realize how often their 'intuition' is just a vocabulary they've built up over many years of puzzling. I've been massively looking forward to your playthrough, take it at your own pace. There's that old quote, "now you're thinking with portals" and it's true, there's a lot of mental reorienting you have to do first
I’ve always said that with this game especially, and obviously the first one, solving the puzzles unconventionally or otherwise accidentally is half the fun
Yeah I was getting somewhat salty then I remembered back to when I first played it (granted I was 11) and I straight up couldn't beat it, I had to wait for my brain to develop more to be able to finish the game
And number 2 throws several new puzzle mechanics at you that were not part of the first. It's pretty easy to just totally forget some thing you did only once, or at least not think to apply it to some new situation.

The boots, called "The Long Fall Boots" are the game's answer to why you don't break your legs or otherwise take fall damage, despite often falling at terminal velocity thanks to portals.
Look up the Aperture ads for them. They’re really fun.
Just to add context to the "60 years left to do it" line from GLaDos, she's estimating your natural lifespan of dying from old age.
"...and when you're dead I will be still alive. Still Alive. Still alive"
give or take, she dosn't have the actuarial tables in front of her (she totally does)
And then she may take up reanimating people, to bring you back and test you even more after you die of old age.

One of my favourite bits early in Portal 2 is around 9:05 in this video.

So of course the room just smashes into the wall, because this is not a docking station (it is 600 ft above one though)

1:26:50 This is the true Portal experience. The thrill of figuring out the solution, followed by the how stupid we all feel for taking so long to figure it out. I hated how long I took to solve this one when I played it.
This comment. Portal makes for an excellent brain workout and one of the few games out there that makes me feel smarter after playing.
That puzzle is great. It's so easy in retrospect, but it took me so long to figure out first time through.
And once you've played the game more than once it becomes hard to remember which puzzle took you how long, because the longer it took you to figure it out the first time, the better you remember it the next time around. Because you literally tried everything that didn't work.

Wheatley said 'him' simply because he didn't know the details, he was unaware that it was you that defeated GLaDOS. There's no other human involved (at least not directly, but check out the Lab Rat comic by Valve if you want to know more about the Aperture Science employee who made the drawings that you find in the game, it bridges the gap between Portal 1 and 2).
Wheatly wasn't familiar with Chel's game, she's a badass. It truly shows people with brain damage are the real heroes.

Portal 2 will never not hold up
Those "leg splints" are jump boots. It's why you can go flinging yourself through portals a million feet in the air, they will always re-align your feet to the ground and land with them absorbing all of the dangerous impact. Part of the science that gets done at Aperture Science. (They're a video game reason why you can fall over and over and not break your bones.)
hilariously, invented solely to protect the portal gun from getting broken over and over. protecting the human holding it is a wholly unintended side effect.
In the Beta testing, people complained about Chell surviving the long falls. They modelled springs on the boots and people stopped mentioning it. Just a hint of plausibility for people to accept the immersion.
In the test chamber with the companion cube, there's a secret, second test. There's no emancipation grill, so if you portal on the walls that are just before the exit, you can take the companion cube with you.

You're puzzling through the puzzles at a perfectly reasonable rate, I can see your thought process in them, you're very clearly working out the logic
People forget that Portal really messes with your brain, I guarantee they were the exact same way when they started and they just forgot, but now they've played through it and they have all the new portal-based brain connections set up and don't understand that it's not innate it's learned

I've never played the Portal games, but I'd probably have gotten stuck for like a week each for some of the harder puzzles. Watching gameplay videos, it still took me several tries to understand some of the puzzle solutions - I could see what they were doing but not why.
Fun fact about Portal that isn’t going to spoil too much. Portal and Half Life take place in the same universe, both of their major companies referencing each other regularly in the lore
God I love GLaDOS, the voice acting is top notch, but whoever wrote her dialogue is just all sorts of brilliant.

I like skimming through Portal playthroughs sometimes because I love how people interact with this amazingly built story mainly. Love that you fully interact with the dialogue!
One of my friends recently said “Portal 1 is really just the intro for Portal 2”, and I couldn’t agree more. I adore them both, don’t get me wrong, I played Portal 1 back when GLaDOS had her old head model before the update. But Portal 1 set up the venue so that Portal 2 could put on the show.
I played portal 2 before portal 1 (still yet to play it) and I love it.
Wheatly is my favourite charater, but GLaDOS is too ruthless not to be liked.
The moment you and Wheatly walked past the turret:
Turret: "Hello?"
Me: "I'm different"
Meg: *Walks Past*
Turret: "I'm different."
Me: *Squeals in excitement*

This game is tops.
Also other games in the Valve catalogue, you should definitely react to the 'Meet the Mercenaries' which are character shorts for Team Fortress 2 (also the community is fun) like the VA's really love playing these characters and are still active and some have recently been recreating them.
Portal 1 is not much of a commitment so it's definitely worth a try
my siblings set me up with portal 2 when i was 6. it was the first real pc game i ever played i went back and played the first one years later and have replayed them so many times since
I will never get tired of how MASTERFULLY condescending GlaDOS is at the beginning of this game.

GLaDOS is a very very complex AI, you will understand her more in the future. She is exeedengly smart and terrifiying at the same time. She does this for fun, she knows how to be sarcastic, she knows how to make you feel bad, she is capable of "feeling" emotions

23:24 I played Portal 2 first. It was given to me as a birthday present when I was in middle school. I had just gotten a Xbox 360 for Christmas and wasn’t sure of what games to play on it. I was definitely confused on what was going on in the story, yet I was really enjoying the game and kept playing.

GLaDOS is great in this game, and the story gets more interesting compared to the first.
The first one was an experiment turned cult phenomenon. They hoped for success, but not THAT MUCH success. With the 2nd one of course they opened the valve completely and went full steam ahead!

I love watching people that are playing the game for the first time because you can see the look on their face when the puzzle finally clicks.
Honestly, that last puzzle stumps so many people. It stumped me for a while when I first played the game and almost everyone else I've seen play the game forget some aspect of how you solve that. I've seen people take longer than you did so you're doing good.
Most of the solutions to puzzles in this game are deceptively simple so that once you know them, it's not hard to do mechancally, it's just a matter of piecing together all the steps that you know which isn't always easy. It's very rare that a puzzle has a super precise or convoluted solution.

There is a Portal short film that you can still watch on UA-cam I think. Interestingly, it was directed by Dan Trachtenberg early in his career, and his most recent film was the Predator sequel, Prey.
You can bring the companion cube with you in that test chamber with no emancipation grill. Portal in the test chamber, portal in the corridor that leads to the lift, grab cube and walk through portal
I love watching you figure out the puzzles and listen to and think about the characters and dialogue! The way they expanded on Portal in this game is honestly fantastic, and it's definitely up there in my favorite games of all time.
There may be a bit of frustration watching the puzzles, but then I remember I've been playing video games since I was around 4 and started with FPS games, so I have a bit more intuition for these sorts of things, hah. And your editing is on point! Enough so we can see the struggle, and then the great moments of realization!

after you finish portal 2 single player I 100% reccommend finding someone to play the coop campaign with. It's extremely cute, and fun to figure out the puzzles with a friend. I ended up playing through most of it with randos from steam and no voice chat, but I still remember it very fondly.
I frequently quote the way Glados says "Therrrrrrrrre it isssssss."
I'm just praying after this you start your Metal Gear Solid journey. It will be a series that I know you'll fall in love with. It has everything, and I mean literally everything. It has all the emotions, some of the most bizarre moments and characters, cringe moments. It is one of - if not THE wildest ride in a gaming franchise you could have.
Oh Raiden, I'm totally with you there. I'm in my hyperfixation with intelligence agencies currently, and I just know I'll love Kojima's style.

I'll be honest, I didn't comment on your portal 1 playthrough, but I found myself feeling both frustrated *AND* supportive at the same time hahaha! Some of the things it was taking you a while to grasp had me almost wanting to tear my hair out, but it was still plenty satisfying when it finally clicked, and I would struggle not to enjoy any playthrough of this series!
It'd be super cool if you could check out the Half Life series next, since without spoiling any details, those games share a universe with Portal!
P.S.: if you want some more answers elaborating on what's going on with that mural near the beginning of this game, there's a short comic set before/during the events of the first game you can check out. It should be freely available on the Valve website for Portal.

@@MegMage I've seen one or two people read it on UA-cam, though it doesn't seem to be a common thing. I'm afraid I have no clue whether they had any copyright issues because of it.
@@MegMage Also, building off of the half life sharing a universe bit, this is what was referred to as the "apocalyptic circumstances" by the pre-recorded voice when you first start testing. Glados also mentions it in the boss fight at the end of portal 1, needing to keep what is on the surface out of aperture.
I had actually never heard about portal until the second one was coming out, it had so much hype around it's release. I actually own a GameStop GameInformer magazine that features portal 2 on the cover. I was able to play it when someone my family knew had pre ordered it. I beat it the same night I started playing it. Just played straight through the whole thing, with no knowledge of portal. jesus it was hard

As I remember, an early version was given to valve testers and they were like "where is GlaDOS"? So she was written back in, thankfully.
I'm really glad that she's doing this one. In the beauty of this is watching people figure things out. I gave my brother both of these games and it was a joy to watch him work his way through it.

Portal are really good on making you think about some crazy way to solve the puzzle and then realize that the puzzle are actualy easy. then you think that you are actually dumb for thinking too much!
Something to remember: this game came out in 2011! It is 13 years old. Keep that in mind when looking at the graphics and detail in everything, it is impressive and was even more impressive when it came out. It still holds up!

The first thing glados did first after reviving is thowing you down the same incinerator as you did her.
Wow, you got to this quick! So glad! This game is a classic; definitely one of my favorites and just an absolute joy to play. The dialog is (as you've noticed, haha) stupidly hilarious and fantastic, and both Wheatley and GLaDOS are wonderful characters who both get some great development! I look forward to seeing you play this and experience this incredible story.
(Also, some of the later chambers are fairly complex. Like you, at times I found myself stumped, finally something clicked and I was ashamed I didn't get it sooner, lol.)
YESSS YOU'RE PLAYING THE SEQUEL. Remember, some people in comments are going to be nitpicky but I would argue a lot of us here struggled ourselves with these games when we very first played them, so please keep that in mind fellow viewers! I STILL have troubles in the later game levels

That last level was very painfull to watch 😂. And it was even heavily cut. How many hours did that take?
