  • All visual stories need characters. The creative world of Character Design is the process of creating characters for animated films, comics, TV, toys, and books.
These are examples of Ashcan Art students interested in Character Design who were accepted into the top programs in the country.
At Ashcan Art, we teach our students how to create the industry's standard Model Sheet for their Art Portfolios. A model sheet, also known as a character board, character sheet, or character study, is a page used to show the appearance, poses, and gestures of the character you’ve designed.
Students that take Ashcan's Character Design program learn the fundamentals of Digital Painting, and then the step-by-step process of creating great characters, ending with a series of character model sheets. This includes learning about character expression and proportion, as well as the fundamentals of gesture drawing, anatomy, character personality, clothing and character angles and perspectives. Based on this learning, you will develop and complete a series of dynamic digital characters for your Art Portfolio.
You’ll be challenged to come up with original ideas and solutions. Remember that originality implies risk-taking as you work toward developing a personal voice.
Frequently, you’ll be presented with the need to observe and research. Each assignment aims to help you gain a practical and theoretical
understanding of Character Design principles, and the making of outstanding Character Design Art Portfolio pieces that Admissions Counselors will be very impressed with.
