So glad Seles was able to win another slam (and make other GS finals) after her 1993 stabbing. Hate that it happened to her. She was on an unstoppable roll:
1990 - Won French Open (beat Graf)
    1991 - Won Aus Open
    1991 - Won French Open
    1991 - (didn't compete Wimbledon)
    1991 - Won US Open
    1992 - Won Aus Open
1992 - Won French Open (beat Graf)
1992 - Wimbledon final (lost to Graf)
    1992 - Won US Open
1993 - Won Aus Open (beat Graf)

Nice upload! Thank you! The most entertaining match imo is the 98 final, Hingis v Martinez.. Martinez will make you play. It's the most involved match point of the decade. Love wrapping up the 90's with a Hingis hattrick..

Interesting to note how the competition at the AO and Wimbledon diverged after the 80's. In the 80's, the same players were winning both tournaments (most of the time). With the change of surface (i.e., rebound ace), that stopped.

    • @fundhund62
      @fundhund62 7 місяців тому

It wasn't even that bad. She was asked about Davenport's earlier comments ("sometimes when I looked at the other side of the net it felt like I was playing a man") and jokingly added that Mauresmo was "half a man" and that "she came here with her girlfriend".
The whole conversation was in Swiss German, which is impossible to understand for non swiss people. Some languages have a way of expressing things in a manner that doesn't translate well to other languages. I don't know if that's the case with Swiss German, but it's possible.
And don't forget, even Swiss German wasn't her native language.
      So I don't actually think it's a big deal.

    • @Tennisisreallyfun

It was rather sad, but I suppose those were the times. But she didn’t let those comments bring her down. She won Wimbledon! And so did Bartoli in the face of fat shaming, and Seles came back and won the AO after the trauma of the stabbing. I think these days we tend to throw around “triumph in the face of adversity” a little too often and with too little care. But these women definitely deserve that phrase in my view (even though a stabbing is on a far greater scale than hateful comments all your career, but still, I think the point still remains).

Plenty of one sided finals, some were really anticlimatic. Only Seles - Novotna and Seles - Graf went to deciders. Trend continued to the first two finals of the next century. Luckily four big ones followed, and we've had some good ones and some duds later on.
